If DeepSeek is unavailable, choose an alternative by checking five things before you type anything sensitive: whether chats train models, how long they are retained and deleted, whether an account is required, who can review them, and whether consumer and business terms differ. On the providers’ published policies, Brave Leo has the lowest stated exposure because it requires no login and says it does not retain, share, or use chats for training. Claude is the strongest mainstream standalone choice when you want a documented deletion window. ChatGPT offers strong controls if you enable Temporary Chat or disable training, while consumer Copilot keeps conversation activity for 18 months by default. Work or school Copilot adds enterprise protection and administrator audit logs.

What should you compare before choosing a private AI chatbot?

Privacy is not a single feature. A chatbot can promise not to train on prompts yet keep them for support, safety or legal reasons; another can delete visible history while retaining a backend copy for a stated period. Compare the complete data path rather than relying on a “private” label.

  1. Training use: Is your content used to improve models by default, only after you opt in, or not for that plan?
  2. Retention and deletion: How long does the service keep conversations, and what happens after you delete them?
  3. Identity exposure: Is an account required, and does the account connect chats with a larger profile?
  4. Human, safety and administrator access: Can staff, contractors or workplace administrators review content?
  5. Product context: Do consumer, business, API and work-or-school versions have different rules?

The answers below are based on provider-published policies and product pages. They are not an independent security ranking, and settings, retention periods and regional availability can change.

Which chatbot is the most privacy-conscious if DeepSeek is down?

For the narrowest exposure, start with Brave Leo. For a full-featured standalone service with a clearly stated deletion period, choose Claude. Use ChatGPT when its ecosystem matters and you are willing to configure its privacy controls; choose work or school Copilot when your organization needs Microsoft identity, enterprise safeguards and auditable administration.

Service and context Training treatment Retention and deletion Account requirement Who may access content Best fit
Brave Leo Provider says chats are not used for model training. Provider says chats are not retained or shared. No account or login required. Policy does not promise that every possible legal or safety request is impossible; the no-retention statement is the provider’s claim. No-login use and minimal stated retention.
Claude consumer Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude. If you allow model improvement, de-identified data may remain in training pipelines for up to five years. Deleted chats disappear from history immediately and are deleted from backend storage within 30 days, according to Anthropic’s July 1, 2026 article. Account-based service. Anthropic lists legal and safety-related retention exceptions. Mainstream chatbot with a documented deletion target.
ChatGPT consumer Personal-service content may be used to improve models depending on your settings. You can control training and use Temporary Chat. You can export or delete eligible data; the exact retention result depends on the feature and applicable policy. Account-based service. Limited authorized personnel or service providers may access content for abuse, security, support, legal matters or improvement unless you opt out where available. Users who need broad capabilities and are willing to configure controls.
ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or API Inputs and outputs are not used for training by default unless the organization opts in, under OpenAI’s March 13, 2026 policy. Terms and retention depend on the product and organization settings. Organization-managed account or API credentials. Authorized personnel and organization administrators can have access under the applicable service terms. Organizational data that needs a no-training default.
Microsoft Copilot consumer You can opt out of training, personalization and memory, but some conversations may still receive automated or human review for product improvement and digital safety. Conversation activity is retained for 18 months by default, according to Microsoft’s consumer documentation. Microsoft account. Safety-related human review cannot be disabled. Convenience when you already use Microsoft services and accept longer default history.
Copilot for work or school Prompts and responses are not used to train foundation models, according to Microsoft. Organization-controlled records and audit settings apply. Work or school identity. Prompts, Bing queries and responses are logged for administrator audit tools. Enterprise protection and compliance visibility.

How does Brave Leo protect conversations?

Brave’s product page describes Leo as a “privacy-first AI assistant” and says: “Leo doesn’t retain or share chats, or use them for model training. No account or login is required.” That combination makes it the lowest-exposure option in this comparison for a person who wants to avoid creating an identity-linked history.

What you can do with Leo

Leo is built into Brave’s browser and can summarize webpages, documents, PDFs and videos. The no-login design is useful when you need a quick explanation without attaching the prompt to an existing account.

What the privacy claim does not prove

The statement is a provider policy, not an independent security audit. It does not establish how every underlying model supplier, browser diagnostic system or network intermediary handles data. Treat it as a strong product-level promise, not absolute confidentiality.

When Leo is the practical choice

  • You need to ask a question without registering.
  • You want the provider’s stated no-retention and no-training position.
  • You can work inside the Brave browser and do not require a team workspace or administrator controls.

How private is Claude, and what does its 30-day deletion promise mean?

Anthropic’s consumer retention article, published July 1, 2026, says a deleted conversation is removed from chat history immediately and deleted from backend storage within 30 days. That is a clearer deletion target than many consumer services publish, but it is not a promise of instant erasure from every system.

Training and improvement settings

Claude’s Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude. If you allow model improvement, Anthropic may retain data in de-identified form for up to five years in training pipelines. “De-identified” reduces direct identity linkage; it does not mean the content disappears quickly.

Exceptions and residual risk

Anthropic lists legal and safety-related retention exceptions. A request to delete a chat therefore removes it from ordinary history and targets backend deletion, while an exception can require certain records to be held longer. Do not treat the 30-day target as legal privilege or a guarantee against every form of access.

Who should choose Claude

Claude is a good fit when you want a conventional, account-based assistant but also want a published backend deletion window and an explicit way to keep chats out of improvement. Before sending sensitive material, verify that Incognito or the relevant improvement setting is active for the conversation you are about to start.

How can I configure ChatGPT for more private use?

ChatGPT gives you several controls, but privacy depends on selecting the right mode and understanding the consumer-versus-business distinction. OpenAI’s Privacy Center describes controls for training, data export and deletion, and Temporary Chat.

Use Temporary Chat for a one-off sensitive question

  1. Open ChatGPT and start a new conversation.
  2. Choose the Temporary Chat option in the chat interface before entering your prompt.
  3. Confirm that the temporary indicator is active, then ask only for the minimum information needed.
  4. When finished, close the conversation and avoid copying the response into a normal, history-enabled chat.

Temporary Chat is a product control, not a promise that no authorized system can ever process the message. OpenAI’s consumer data FAQ says limited authorized personnel or service providers may access content for abuse, security, support, legal matters or improvement unless you opt out where that option applies.

Turn off model improvement for ordinary chats

Use the privacy or data-controls area in ChatGPT to disable the setting that allows your content to improve models. The exact label and location can change, so check the current Privacy Center guidance in your account. Disabling improvement does not remove the need to consider retention, support access or legal requests.

Use the right plan for organizational data

OpenAI’s March 13, 2026 policy says Business, Enterprise and API inputs and outputs are not used for training by default unless an organization opts in. That default is materially different from consumer terms. An administrator still controls account access, retention configuration and compliance processes, so a business workspace is not a substitute for internal data-handling rules.

What are the privacy trade-offs in Microsoft Copilot?

Consumer Copilot offers useful switches but has a longer stated default history: Microsoft says conversation activity is retained for 18 months. Work or school Copilot uses a different enterprise model, with stronger protection and more visibility for administrators.

Consumer Copilot controls

In the consumer controls area, you can opt out of training, disable personalization and memory, and delete conversation history. These switches reduce reuse and profile-building, but they do not eliminate all review. Microsoft says some conversations may receive automated or human review for product improvement and digital safety, and opting out of safety-related human review is unavailable.

Work or school Copilot

For work or school accounts, Microsoft says Copilot Chat provides enterprise data protection. Prompts and responses are not used to train foundation models, chat is encrypted in transit, and prompts, Bing queries and responses are logged for administrator audit tools. That logging is valuable for governance but means your employer or school may be able to review activity under its policies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing between the two contexts

  • Use consumer Copilot only for information you are comfortable retaining for the stated 18-month default and potentially reviewing for safety.
  • Use work or school Copilot when your organization requires identity-based access, encryption in transit and auditability.
  • Do not assume a personal Microsoft account receives the protections described for an organization-managed account.

How do I choose the right chatbot for a specific privacy situation?

Match the service to the consequence of exposure, not just to answer quality. The following decision paths keep the choice practical.

You cannot create an account

Choose Brave Leo first because its provider says no account or login is required. If Leo is unavailable, postpone the question or use a logged-in service only after removing identifying details; the other options in this guide are account-based.

You need a documented deletion target

Choose Claude and use its normal deletion controls, or use Incognito when you do not want the chat used to improve Claude. Remember the 30-day backend target and the listed legal and safety exceptions.

You already rely on ChatGPT’s tools

Use Temporary Chat for an isolated prompt and disable model improvement for regular conversations. For company or customer information, move to Business, Enterprise or API terms rather than assuming consumer settings carry over.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Your employer needs oversight

Use work or school Copilot when your organization has approved it. Its no-training statement and audit logs support governance, while the same logs mean administrators can inspect activity.

The question contains a secret

Do not paste the secret into any consumer chatbot. Replace names, account numbers, API keys, access tokens and exact dates with neutral placeholders, and ask for a method or template instead of submitting the original material.

What is the safest way to prepare a prompt?

Privacy settings cannot fix a prompt that contains more information than the task requires. Apply data minimization before choosing a service.

  1. Classify the material: separate public, internal, confidential and regulated information.
  2. Remove direct identifiers: delete names, email addresses, phone numbers, addresses, customer IDs and account references.
  3. Remove secrets: never include passwords, private keys, access tokens, recovery codes or unredacted credentials.
  4. Generalize unique details: change exact dates, rare job titles, small locations and distinctive events when they are not needed for the answer.
  5. Ask for transformation rather than disclosure: request a checklist, pseudocode or review rubric and apply it locally to the original file.
  6. Check the destination: confirm whether you are in a temporary, incognito, consumer, business or work-managed context before pressing Send.
  7. Clean up outputs: do not paste a chatbot’s response, which may quote your input, into another service with weaker controls.

What common mistakes make a “private” chatbot choice unsafe?

  • Confusing no training with no retention: a provider can exclude prompts from model improvement while keeping them for safety, support or legal reasons.
  • Assuming deletion is immediate everywhere: visible history can disappear before backend systems complete their deletion process.
  • Using a personal account for workplace material: consumer controls do not provide the enterprise protections or audit processes of an approved work plan.
  • Ignoring human review: consumer Copilot specifically retains the possibility of safety-related human review, even after other controls are changed.
  • Treating Incognito or Temporary Chat as legal confidentiality: these modes address product handling, not attorney-client privilege, medical confidentiality or a guarantee against lawful access.
  • Forgetting browser and device exposure: copied prompts, screenshots, downloads, browser history and keyboard extensions can preserve information outside the chatbot’s own retention policy.
  • Trusting a policy forever: providers can change settings, retention periods, model suppliers or regional availability. Recheck the exact plan before each high-consequence use.

How should organizations evaluate these services?

An organization should approve a specific product and configuration, not a generic brand name. Record the account type, training default, retention rule, administrator access, geographic or regional constraints and the process for deleting or exporting data.

Consumer tools in a workplace

If staff use personal accounts, the organization may have no reliable deletion, audit or access process. A “do not paste confidential data” rule is easier to enforce when the approved workflow uses redaction and a managed plan rather than relying on every employee to remember a setting.

Business and API controls

OpenAI’s March 13, 2026 policy gives Business, Enterprise and API products a no-training default unless the organization opts in. Confirm the contract, retention configuration and administrator roles for the exact product, because the no-training default does not itself specify every operational control.

Enterprise Copilot controls

Work or school Copilot provides enterprise data protection and logs prompts, Bing queries and responses for administrator audit tools. That supports investigations and compliance, but the organization must define who may inspect logs, how long they are kept and how employees are notified.

What should I verify when policies or settings change?

Before a sensitive session, open the provider’s current privacy or data-controls page and check the plan name shown in your account. Verify five items: training status, history retention, deletion behavior, human or administrator access, and whether the feature you are using—such as file upload, web search or voice—has separate terms. Save the date of your organization’s approval or internal review so a later policy change can be detected.

Provider-published controls are useful evidence, but they are not an independent audit. Availability can also differ by country, account type and product version. If the policy is unclear, treat the service as unsuitable for confidential material rather than inferring a stronger guarantee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Claude’s Incognito chats instead of deleting conversations later?

Incognito chats are described as not being used to improve Claude, so they are useful when model-improvement use is your main concern. They do not replace checking Anthropic’s current retention, safety and legal terms for the feature and region you are using.

Does a chatbot’s privacy setting protect text I copy into another app?

No. Once you copy a prompt or answer into email, notes, a browser extension or another AI service, that destination’s retention and access rules apply. Keep sensitive drafts local and transfer only a redacted result.

What should I ask an employer before using its AI chatbot?

Ask who can read prompts and responses, how long audit logs are kept, whether administrators can export them, which data classes are prohibited, and how an employee can request correction or deletion. Also confirm whether the approved tool is a work-managed product rather than a personal account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a no-login chatbot anonymous on my device?

No-login means the provider does not require an account; it does not erase local browser history, network records, copied text or device telemetry. Use a managed device and network only when your organization’s policy permits it, and remove sensitive content from local history afterward.
