The safest choice is not a single “magic” app. Use a tool that creates a restorable full-system image for a failed drive or unbootable Windows installation, keep a separate file-version backup for everyday mistakes, and store at least one copy away from the PC. Windows Backup and File History are useful, but Microsoft documents them for account-based setup recovery and personal-file versioning rather than a bare-metal image. Current products cover different parts of that job: PCWorld names EaseUS Todo Backup 2026 Home its best overall Windows pick and Acronis True Image its comprehensive backup and malware-protection pick, while Macrium positions Reflect X Home as a full backup-and-recovery package for home computers. Those are attributed evaluations, not personal test results.
What should a PC backup app actually protect?
A backup app should match the failure you are trying to recover from. Copying documents is different from preserving an entire Windows installation, applications, boot partitions, and settings. Microsoft separates backup, restore, and PC-to-PC transfer in its Windows guidance (Microsoft’s backup, restore, and recovery overview).

| Recovery problem | Protection you need | What a restore should deliver |
|---|---|---|
| Accidentally deleted or overwrote a document | File-level copies with version history | An earlier or deleted file, without replacing the whole PC |
| Ransomware or a corrupted project folder | Older, isolated file copies and a retention policy | A clean version from before the damage |
| Failed SSD, malware that prevents Windows from starting, or a badly broken update | A full-system image plus bootable recovery media | Windows, applications, partitions, and data restored together |
| Setting up a replacement or freshly reinstalled PC | Cloud-synced files and exported or image-based recovery, depending on the app | Your files and supported settings, with application reinstall steps where required |
A file backup is not automatically a system image. An image captures the disk structure needed to reconstruct a bootable installation; a file service may preserve your data while leaving Windows and applications to be installed again. Do not buy on the word “backup” alone—check the documented restore target and whether recovery can start when Windows cannot.
Which recovery job do you need?
Recovering a few files
File History is designed for this narrow but common case. Microsoft says it backs up personal files to an external drive or network location and lets you restore earlier versions (Microsoft’s File History guidance). It is a practical safety net for documents, photos, and project folders, but it does not by itself prove that you can rebuild a dead Windows installation.

Recovering an entire PC
For a dead system drive or an installation that will not boot, choose software that explicitly offers disk imaging and disaster recovery. You also need a recovery environment or bootable media and a destination that can hold the image. The sources here do not establish that every named product restores to dissimilar hardware, so verify hardware-restore support if you plan to move an image to a different model of computer.
Moving to a new or reinstalled PC
Windows Backup is aimed at a consumer Microsoft-account workflow. During setup of a new or reinstalled PC, signing in with the same personal account can restore supported settings and app pins; files remain available through OneDrive. Microsoft says work and school accounts are not supported by this consumer app (Windows Backup documentation). That is a convenient setup aid, not a documented bare-metal image.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →How is Windows Backup different from a full-image app?
Windows Backup selects folders for OneDrive synchronization and records supported settings and some app information against a personal Microsoft account. Its value is quick recovery of a user profile on another or reinstalled PC, provided the same account and supported services are available. It does not create the kind of complete disk image used to restore an unbootable Windows installation in one operation (Microsoft’s feature description).
File History fills a different gap: it writes versions of personal files to an external drive or network location. You can browse and restore an earlier copy after an accidental edit. Use both features if they fit your needs, but do not treat either as proof that your applications, boot records, and Windows partitions are recoverable.

Which current PC backup apps are worth considering?
The following options solve different parts of the problem. PCWorld’s Windows software comparison, updated September 29, 2026, names its picks and trade-offs; those judgments belong to PCWorld, not to independent testing here (PCWorld’s comparison).
| Option | Best-documented fit | Destinations or account model | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Backup | Consumer setup recovery, OneDrive files, supported settings and app pins | Personal Microsoft account and OneDrive | Microsoft does not document it as a full-system image workflow; work and school accounts are unsupported |
| File History | Earlier versions of personal files | External drive or network location | File recovery, not a complete Windows image |
| EaseUS Todo Backup 2026 Home | PCWorld’s best overall pick; imaging and disaster-recovery strengths | PCWorld notes a lack of third-party online-storage support | Recommendation and feature assessment are PCWorld’s; current price was not stated in the cited material |
| Acronis True Image | PCWorld’s comprehensive backup and malware-protection pick | Cloud storage and local options are part of its feature set | PCWorld notes active malware protection and a subscription-only model; confirm current plan scope before purchase |
| Macrium Reflect X Home | Comprehensive backup and recovery for personal users | Home-computer use with annual plans listed on Macrium’s current comparison page | Licensing and features can change; use the current comparison rather than old help pages (Macrium comparison) |
| Backblaze Computer Backup | Off-site file backup and cloud-based restore | Cloud service | The cited restore documentation does not establish complete Windows-system-image recovery; service limits and terms can change |

Use a local external drive for fast, direct recovery
An external hard drive is a straightforward destination for File History and for many image-based tools. Microsoft explicitly describes external drives as backup destinations (Microsoft guidance). Choose enough capacity for the source data plus retained versions or images, and use a USB connection supported by your PC. Disconnect the drive when scheduled jobs finish if you want some protection from malware that can reach always-mounted storage.
Add a network destination when several PCs share storage
File History can target a network location. Network storage keeps copies available to multiple computers, but it remains in the same building unless you deliberately place it elsewhere. Check permissions, connectivity, and whether your image software supports the network protocol before relying on it for a system restore.

Keep an off-site copy for local disasters
A second copy in cloud storage or at another location addresses theft, fire, and other hazards that can destroy both the PC and its attached drive. No single method protects against every failure. Compare cloud plans for retention, encryption, account recovery, restore format, download limits, and whether they recover files only or a complete image.
How do I build a layered backup plan?
Set up the plan in this order so each layer has a defined job.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- List irreplaceable data. Include documents, photographs, source code, browser exports, and application data that is not already safely synchronized.
- Turn on file-version protection. Configure File History to an external drive or network location if you need convenient recovery of earlier personal files.
- Select an imaging application. Pick software whose documentation explicitly covers full-disk or system imaging and a recovery environment. PCWorld’s current comparison is a market reference, not a substitute for reading the product’s restore instructions.
- Choose a local destination. Size the external drive for the image plus the number of retained versions you intend to keep. Keep the drive connected only for the backup window when practical.
- Create recovery media before an emergency. Use the imaging product’s documented rescue-media process and test that the PC can boot from it. A backup that exists but cannot be reached when Windows fails is an incomplete plan.
- Add an off-site copy. Use a cloud service or a second physical location for the files or images your risk assessment requires. Confirm what the provider can restore and how much a large recovery will cost.
- Schedule and review. Set a cadence based on how much work you can afford to lose, then check logs, free space, and the date of the newest successful copy.
- Perform a small restore test. Restore a noncritical file to a temporary folder and, separately, verify that your recovery media can see the image destination. Do not wait for a failed drive to discover a cable, password, or boot-mode problem.
How do I recover files after deleting or corrupting them?
Using File History
- Connect the external drive or ensure the configured network location is reachable.
- Open the File History restore interface described in Windows settings and browse the time-stamped versions of the affected folder.
- Select the file or folder, choose the earlier version, and restore it to the original location or another folder for comparison.
- Open the recovered copy before replacing newer work.
The exact Windows settings layout can vary by release, so follow Microsoft’s current File History instructions rather than an old screenshot. File History’s documented scope is personal files and earlier versions, not a complete operating-system rebuild.
Using a cloud restore
Cloud services commonly offer a browser download or a shipped restore drive, but the limits matter. Backblaze’s restore documentation dated March 13, 2024 lists ZIP downloads up to 500 GB per ZIP and up to 20 active ZIP downloads, a restore to Backblaze B2 of up to 10 TB (potentially with additional cost), and USB hard-drive restores up to 8 TB (Backblaze restore instructions). Its Windows client release notes show version 10.0.3.1075 and an update dated September 14, 2026 (Backblaze Windows release notes). Verify current limits before depending on them; these methods do not establish complete Windows-image recovery.

What if Windows will not start?
File-copy services cannot, by themselves, prove that an unbootable PC can be rebuilt. Use the imaging product’s rescue media, boot the affected computer from it, locate the image on the external or network destination, and follow that product’s restore workflow. If the drive has physically failed, replace it with a compatible drive first and confirm that the image contains the required system partitions. Whether an image can boot on different hardware is product-specific and is not established by the cited comparisons, so check that capability before a motherboard or laptop replacement.
How much do backup apps cost and how are they licensed?
Licensing is not uniform. PCWorld describes Acronis True Image as subscription-only. Macrium’s current comparison lists annual plans for Reflect X Home and identifies home-computer use. The cited material does not provide a verified current price for EaseUS Todo Backup 2026 Home, Windows Backup, File History, or Backblaze Computer Backup, so treat any price shown on an older article as stale. Before paying, check whether the license covers one PC or several, whether cloud storage is included, how long restores remain available, and what happens when a subscription ends.
Which choice fits your situation?
- Mostly documents and photos: Start with File History to an external or network drive, then add an off-site copy for irreplaceable files.
- You need to rebuild Windows after a drive failure: Choose an imaging product with rescue media, retain a local image, and test the boot-and-restore path.
- You are setting up several personal PCs: Windows Backup can reduce setup work through a personal Microsoft account and OneDrive, but pair it with independent file or image backups.
- You need cloud-only recovery: Read the provider’s current retention and restore-limit pages, and calculate whether downloading or shipping the required volume is practical.
- You use a work or school account: Do not assume the consumer Windows Backup app supports it; Microsoft explicitly limits that app to personal accounts.
The trustworthy plan is the one whose restore procedure you have rehearsed: a versioned file copy for small mistakes, a tested system image for a dead Windows installation, and an off-site copy for disasters that affect the whole room.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can File History restore Windows after a failed SSD?
No. File History preserves earlier versions of personal files on an external drive or network location. Rebuilding an unbootable installation requires a separately created system image and recovery environment from software that documents those capabilities.

Can I use Windows Backup with a company Microsoft account?
Microsoft documents the consumer Windows Backup app for personal Microsoft accounts and says work or school accounts are not supported. Organizations should follow their administrator’s backup system instead of assuming the consumer setup flow will capture business data.
Are cloud restores suitable for a multi-terabyte PC?
They may be, but check the provider’s current limits, delivery method, retention, and fees first. For example, the cited Backblaze documentation lists different ceilings for ZIP, B2, and USB restores, and those terms can change.
Should I keep my backup drive connected all the time?
A permanently mounted drive is convenient but can be exposed to the same malware or electrical event as the PC. Disconnecting it after scheduled jobs adds a layer of separation; maintain another copy elsewhere if local hazards are a concern.
