Choose the provider that can explain, in writing, who patches your exact plan, how quickly urgent fixes are mitigated and deployed, how backports are handled for older PHP branches, and how you can verify completion. “Managed” is a service label, not a universal deadline or guarantee. Security fixes within an existing PHP branch are a different operation from moving a site to a newer major branch, and the customer may be responsible for the second step.
Before signing up, obtain the provider’s patch policy for your plan and region, ask for a recent incident example, and confirm the evidence you will receive after a fix. Then match the offered PHP versions to your CMS, plugins, themes and custom code, with a tested upgrade path before the current branch reaches end of life.

What does managed PHP security patching actually include?
Managed PHP patching normally covers software on the host’s platform, but the boundary varies by product. A provider may apply a security fix within the PHP branch you selected, add a temporary mitigation while an official fix is pending, or migrate sites when that branch is no longer supported. Those actions involve different risks and responsibilities.
Branch-level fixes are not major-version upgrades
Applying a security fix or minor improvement to PHP 8.3 is generally intended to leave the application on the PHP 8.3 branch. Moving from PHP 8.2 to PHP 8.3, or from PHP 8.3 to PHP 8.4, changes the runtime and can expose compatibility problems. cPanel’s February 3, 2026 support explanation states, “New major PHP releases do not replace existing versions.” Its version-management model therefore treats installation of a new major release and management of the existing one as separate tasks.

Ask the host to describe both workflows. A useful policy says whether branch-level security fixes are automatic, whether the branch remains selected after the fix, and what event triggers a separate major-version migration.
Managed does not define the responsibility boundary
On a shared or fully managed service, the provider may maintain the operating system, PHP packages and web server. On an unmanaged VPS or dedicated server, you or your administrator may have to install updates. Even on a managed plan, application code, the CMS, plugins, themes and custom extensions can remain your responsibility.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Get the answer for the exact plan you are buying. A statement about a provider’s managed WordPress platform cannot be assumed to cover its VPS, dedicated-server, reseller or regional products.
How can I evaluate a provider’s patch policy before buying?
Request written answers, preferably from support or sales documentation that names the plan. Use the answers to distinguish a documented process from a generic claim that the service is “managed.”
- Who monitors PHP advisories? Identify the team responsible for tracking upstream disclosures and deciding whether a mitigation or official fix is required.
- Who applies the fix on this plan? Confirm whether the provider patches every PHP branch it offers, including older branches, and whether customers must approve or schedule the work.
- What happens after upstream support ends? Ask whether the host supplies backported fixes, who maintains those backports, and what security scope they cover. If no backport is provided, ask when the site must move to a supported branch.
- What is the urgent-vulnerability procedure? The policy should distinguish temporary mitigation, deployment of the official fix, customer notification and confirmation that rollout is complete.
- How can I verify a fix? Ask whether the provider publishes package or build information, a status-page notice, a dated incident update or another artifact. Confirm whether a backport changes the visible PHP version.
- Are branch upgrades tested? Find out whether the host tests its full platform before making a new PHP version the production default, whether you can select a supported version, and how much notice precedes an automatic change.
- What remains my responsibility? Get a list covering CMS, plugin, theme, framework, custom-code and database updates, plus any changes required on a VPS you administer.
Do not accept an answer such as “we patch promptly” without a scope, trigger and verification method. No market-wide study establishes a universal number of hours for managed PHP hosts to patch, so a provider’s documented process and evidence matter more than an industry average that does not exist.
Which characteristics separate a strong patching service from a vague one?
Score each candidate on four dimensions. A simple matrix makes differences visible when several providers use similar marketing language.

| Dimension | What to verify | Warning signs |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage and older branches | Branches covered, backport policy after upstream support, and whether coverage applies to your quoted plan and region | “All versions” with no list, no owner for backports, or an automatic upgrade presented as the only remedy |
| Incident response | Monitoring owner, mitigation steps, official-fix rollout process and escalation path | No distinction between a temporary workaround and a permanent vendor patch |
| Verification and communication | Build/package identifiers, dated notices, status page and customer confirmation | Only a visible version string, with no way to tell whether a backport was applied |
| Upgrade control and testing | Supported-version selection, staging or testing options, notice period and rollback method | Unannounced major-version changes or no tested rollback path |
Assign a score, such as zero to five, for each dimension and record the evidence beside it. A provider with a lower marketing price but no verification or upgrade controls may create more operational risk than a provider with a clearer process.
Can the PHP version shown in a control panel prove that a security fix is installed?
No. A version string identifies the branch and package label, but a provider can backport a fix without changing that label. In an October 2026 update, GoDaddy said a new Web Hosting build retained the previous version number and advised customers to check the build date. The statement covered its Managed Hosting for WordPress, Web Hosting and Windows Hosting platforms; it separately said VPS customers manage their own software.
Ask what signal the host exposes for your platform:
- the package release or build date;
- a provider advisory naming the fixed build;
- a status-page event with deployment completion;
- an account-level notice identifying affected sites; or
- an automated report or API response that your administrator can archive.
If the only available check is php -v, ask whether the output includes distribution-specific release information and whether the host can confirm backports. Do not conclude that a site is unpatched merely because the major and minor numbers did not change.

Published incident statements show why you must examine the exact platform and responsibility boundary. They are examples of policy evidence, not a controlled ranking or proof of an ongoing patch-time guarantee.
| Provider statement | Action described | Responsibility boundary |
|---|---|---|
| GoDaddy, October 2026 | Reported patched builds on Managed Hosting for WordPress, Web Hosting and Windows Hosting; its Web Hosting fix could keep the prior version number while using a new build. | VPS customers were described as responsible for managing their own software. |
| one.com | Reported temporary protective measures before official fixes were available, followed by official patches on Web hosting and Managed VPS. | Existing websites were not automatically moved between PHP versions. |
| IONOS | Reported applying the official update on operated platforms and distinguishing temporary security measures from the permanent fix. | Self-managed VPS and dedicated-server customers were told to install updates themselves. |
| Hosting UK | Described updates for shared and managed services and mitigations when a patch could not yet be applied. | Unmanaged-server updates were assigned to customers or administrators. |
Use such notices as a template for the evidence you want: affected products, mitigation date, official-fix date, deployment status and customer action. Do not generalize one incident response to every service sold by the same company.

What PHP version should a hosting provider support in 2026?
Choose a version that satisfies both your application’s compatibility matrix and a credible security-support plan. WordPress.org’s requirements page, accessed in 2026, recommends PHP 8.3 or greater and notes that PHP 7.4 and MySQL 5.5.5 legacy support levels have reached end of life.
The WordPress Hosting Handbook gives a stricter, host-oriented recommendation: PHP 8.4 or later for production. It records that PHP 8.3 moved to security-only support on December 31, 2025, and that PHP 8.2 reaches end of life on December 31, 2026. The handbook also tells hosts to test their full stack before making a new PHP version the production default.
These are not contradictory thresholds. The requirements page states a baseline for WordPress installations; the handbook advises hosts on a production default. Check the current support matrix for your CMS, plugins, themes and framework, then ask the provider:
- Which supported PHP branches are selectable today?
- How long will each branch remain available on this plan?
- What security coverage is offered after upstream support ends?
- Can you run a staging copy on the target branch before production?
- What notice is given before the provider changes a default or forces a migration?
Pressable’s policy, last modified September 11, 2025, describes two years of PHP community support followed by a security-fixes period through year three and then end of life. Treat that as Pressable’s policy description, not a substitute for checking the current upstream lifecycle or the policy of another host. Its published position is that EOL PHP is not supported and sites are automatically updated to the next version.
How should I test a PHP upgrade before a host makes it automatic?
A disciplined test reduces the chance that a security-driven migration becomes an outage. Use the provider’s staging, version selector and backup features where available, and document each result.
- Inventory dependencies. Record the CMS version, PHP extensions, plugins, themes, frameworks, queue workers, cron jobs and external integrations. Mark anything abandoned or lacking a compatibility statement.
- Clone production safely. Create a staging copy with current files and a sanitized database. Prevent email sending, payment callbacks and other production side effects while testing.
- Select the target branch. Change only the staging runtime first. Note the exact PHP branch, package build and enabled extensions so a failure can be reproduced.
- Exercise critical paths. Test login, publishing, search, media uploads, forms, checkout, scheduled jobs, API calls and administrative screens. Review PHP error logs and web-server logs for deprecations and fatal errors.
- Update incompatible code. Apply vendor-supported CMS, plugin and theme updates, or replace components that do not support the target branch. Do not suppress a warning without understanding its cause.
- Verify backups and rollback. Confirm that a recent database and file backup can be restored and that the host can switch the site back to the previous supported branch if the plan permits it.
- Schedule production change. Choose a low-risk window, notify stakeholders, pause deployments and record the before-and-after runtime details.
- Monitor after cutover. Watch error rates, response times, cron completion, queues, transactions and user reports. Keep the rollback decision and contact path visible to the on-call person.
Testing the full stack is especially important when the provider plans to make a new version the default. WordPress.org’s Hosting Team explicitly advises hosts to test the full stack before that production change; you should expect a comparable test opportunity for a managed service.

What should the contract or service description promise?
Ask for policy language you can save with the order confirmation. The document should state the covered platform, regions, PHP branches, exclusions and customer duties.
- Scope: operating system, PHP packages, extensions, web server and control panel components included in management.
- Patch classes: security fixes, minor updates, temporary mitigations and major-version migrations, each with its approval or scheduling rule.
- Older-branch treatment: upstream end-of-life date, any third-party backport program, maintainer and coverage limits.
- Notification: normal and urgent channels, incident-page location, maintenance notices and completion confirmation.
- Verification: build identifiers, package dates or other records that let you confirm the installed fix.
- Testing and rollback: staging access, supported-version choices, notice before automatic changes and restoration procedure.
- Customer obligations: application, CMS, plugin, theme, custom-code and self-managed-server updates.
Also verify that the policy applies to the quoted plan and geography. A provider can operate several platforms with different patch tools and support boundaries.
What happens when my PHP branch reaches end of life?
There are three common outcomes: the host continues with documented backports, the host requires you to migrate, or the host stops supporting the branch and leaves the change to you. The safest option depends on the provider’s evidence, your application’s compatibility and the time available to test.
Pressable’s published policy says it does not support EOL PHP and automatically updates sites to the next version. cPanel’s documentation, by contrast, explains that a new major release does not replace an existing one automatically. These statements illustrate why a control panel’s capabilities and a host’s operating policy must be read together: one describes version management, the other describes a provider’s service decision.
Set an internal migration date before the provider’s deadline. If you need an older branch temporarily, ask what compensating controls exist, how long they last and who is responsible for monitoring them. Treat a backport as a defined service with a maintainer and scope, not as an implied promise created by the word “managed.”
What are the most common buying mistakes?
- Equating managed with immediate. “Managed” does not state a patch deadline. Obtain the process and evidence.
- Confusing a branch upgrade with a security patch. A fix can remain on the current branch; a major-version migration needs compatibility testing.
- Trusting the visible version number alone. Backported fixes may arrive in a new build with the same displayed version.
- Ignoring older branches. Ask specifically about the branch your site uses and what happens after upstream support ends.
- Assuming every product shares one policy. Shared hosting, managed WordPress, managed VPS and self-managed servers can have different responsibilities.
- Skipping application updates. A host may patch PHP while your vulnerable plugin or theme remains unchanged.
- Accepting an untested forced upgrade. Require staging, notice and rollback details before relying on automatic migration.
- Using an incident notice as a guarantee. A dated provider statement shows what it reported for that event and platform, not a perpetual service-level objective.
How do I make the final choice?
Shortlist providers only after they answer the written-policy questions. Select the candidate that offers the clearest coverage for your PHP branch, a verifiable incident process, tested upgrade controls and an explicit division of labor.
Best Value
| Decision question | Acceptable evidence | Reject or escalate when |
|---|---|---|
| Will my branch receive fixes? | Named branches, backport owner and end-of-life treatment | The answer relies on “latest version” without branch details |
| How will I know a fix landed? | Build/package data or a dated provider notice | Only a version-number screenshot is offered |
| What happens during an urgent incident? | Mitigation, official patch, notification and completion steps | No distinction between temporary and permanent protection |
| Can I test a migration? | Staging or selectable runtime, notice period and rollback plan | Automatic change with no testing or recovery path |
| Who updates the application? | Explicit customer/provider responsibility list | The sales answer implies PHP patching covers plugins and custom code |
Keep the policy, support replies and incident notices in your operations records. Recheck them when your CMS changes, when a PHP branch approaches end of life, or when the provider moves your site to a different platform.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I review my host’s PHP patch policy?
Review it at least when your CMS or PHP branch changes and before the branch’s published end-of-life date. Also review it after a platform migration, because the responsibility boundary can differ between products.
Does managed PHP hosting update my plugins and themes too?
Usually not unless the service explicitly includes application maintenance. Ask for separate wording covering the CMS core, plugins, themes, custom code and database migrations; PHP package maintenance alone does not establish coverage for those components.
What if a host refuses to disclose build or patch information?
Ask for an alternative verifiable record, such as a dated advisory or status-page event naming the fixed release. If the provider offers neither a technical signal nor a documented notice, treat patch verification as an unresolved operational risk.
Can I remain on an old PHP branch for compatibility?
Only if the provider documents security coverage for that branch and you have a funded migration plan. Confirm the backport maintainer, coverage limits and end date, then test application changes before support expires.
