Choose a linear encoder by starting with usable axis travel and machine accuracy, then confirm the sensing technology, environmental protection, position format, and controller interface. A sealed optical scale is usually the safer choice on a CNC axis exposed to coolant and chips. A magnetic scale can simplify compact retrofits and tolerate contamination, while an absolute encoder is valuable when the machine must know position immediately after power-up. For a 3D printer, the encoder must also fit the frame, survive filament dust and vibration, and work with firmware and electronics that can process its signal rate. Resolution is only one specification: mounting alignment, thermal growth, guide errors, cable limits and servo tuning often determine the accuracy you achieve in practice.

What does a linear encoder do, and why does it matter?

A linear encoder measures the actual position of an axis directly, rather than inferring position from a motor shaft, screw pitch or belt movement. HEIDENHAIN describes this as measuring linear-axis position “without intervening mechanical elements.” Direct measurement can reveal or compensate for backlash, pitch error, thermal expansion and other drive-train errors that a rotary motor encoder cannot see.

The encoder does not automatically make the machine accurate. A flexible frame, misaligned guide, loose carriage, poorly tuned servo or temperature change can still move the tool or nozzle away from the commanded position. Treat the encoder as one part of a complete motion system: mechanics establish stiffness and straightness, the scale reports position, and the controller closes the loop.

  • CNC milling, routing and turning: the scale can correct screw and thermal errors and improve repeatability, but it must withstand coolant, chips, vibration and high axis speeds.
  • 3D printing: a scale can report gantry or carriage position for closed-loop control, but the printer firmware and motion electronics must support the encoder’s signal type and processing rate.
  • Retrofitting: direct measurement is most useful when the existing screw, belt or gearbox has measurable error that cannot be removed economically.

How do I determine the correct measuring length?

Measure the axis’s usable commanded travel, not the overall frame or extrusion length. The scale’s effective measuring length must cover every position the controller can command, including any homing or reference-marker travel. Add the manufacturer’s end margins and leave room for the readhead, cable bend and mounting hardware.

Measure the real envelope

  1. Move the axis to both software limits and record the distance between those positions.
  2. Inspect the full path for belts, ball screws, linear rails, cable chains, covers, clamps and moving-tool clearance.
  3. Reserve the scale’s specified end margins and any distance needed to pass a reference mark.
  4. Check that the readhead can stay within its permitted gap and yaw, pitch and roll limits throughout travel.
  5. Verify that the scale body and connector can be serviced without removing the machine’s main assemblies.

Fagor Automation identifies physical installation length and available space as primary selection factors. A scale that is accurate but too short, obstructed by a cable chain or forced outside its alignment envelope will not deliver its published performance.

What accuracy and resolution do I need?

Set the machine-level accuracy target before comparing resolution numbers. Separate these four specifications:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Accuracy over length: the maximum position error across the stated measuring length and temperature condition.
  • Repeatability: how closely the system returns to the same position under defined conditions.
  • Resolution or interpolation: the smallest position increment reported by the readhead and electronics.
  • Machine accuracy: the final tool or nozzle position, including structure, guides, thermal growth, backlash, servo tuning and installation.

For example, RLS HiLin data lists resolution from 0.1 micrometre, accuracy of ±5 micrometres per metre at 20 °C, short-range accuracy of ±3 micrometres over 30 mm, repeatability of ±0.4 micrometre and hysteresis of no more than 1 micrometre. Those are encoder-system figures, not a guarantee that a complete CNC or printer will hold 0.1 micrometre at the tool.

Specification Published value Condition or scope
RLS HiLin resolution 0.1 µm and above Selectable system resolution
RLS HiLin accuracy ±5 µm/m At 20 °C
RLS HiLin short-range accuracy ±3 µm Over 30 mm
RLS HiLin repeatability ±0.4 µm Encoder-system specification
RLS HiLin hysteresis ≤1 µm Encoder-system specification

Use the smallest resolution that lets the controller regulate smoothly and detect the error you care about. Extremely fine interpolation can increase data rate and expose vibration or electrical noise without improving the machine’s structural accuracy.

Should I choose an optical or magnetic linear encoder?

Optical scales generally offer the highest precision potential when they are clean and correctly aligned. Magnetic scales are often easier to package in a retrofit and are more tolerant of dust and incidental contamination. The right choice depends on the enclosure, required accuracy and available mounting space rather than on technology labels alone.

Technology Strengths Limitations to plan for Typical fit
Optical Very fine measurement capability; common in precision machine tools Exposed optical paths require cleanliness and careful alignment Enclosed or well-protected CNC axes where maximum accuracy is needed
Magnetic Compact retrofit options; better tolerance of many dusty environments Accuracy, interpolation and magnetic installation tolerances vary by model Compact CNC retrofits and protected 3D-printer axes

Sealed optical housings address the contamination problem. HEIDENHAIN states that its sealed linear encoders protect the measuring system from dust, chips and splash water. Its LF 185 is a sealed incremental encoder for axes up to 3,040 mm, with a 4 µm signal period and 1 VPP output.

Magnetic systems still need protection from mechanical damage and contamination that can interfere with the readhead gap. RLS HiLin is an incremental magnetic system intended for machine-tool applications, with a published operating range of –40 °C to +75 °C and a maximum cable length of 10 m. An enclosed magnetic absolute design is also available: Magnescale’s SR27A AX variant lists effective lengths from 70 to 2,040 mm, selectable resolution from 0.005 to 1 µm and a maximum response speed of 200 m/min.

Do I need an incremental or absolute encoder?

Choose incremental when a reliable homing routine is acceptable and your controller already supports quadrature or 1 VPP feedback. Choose absolute when the machine must know its position immediately after power is restored or when moving to a reference mark at startup is unacceptable. Renishaw explains that an absolute encoder decodes its current position without any motion; an incremental encoder reports movement relative to a known reference.

When incremental is the practical choice

  • The CNC or printer can safely home each axis at startup.
  • A reference switch or index mark is repeatable and accessible.
  • You want simpler wiring and broad support for differential quadrature or 1 VPP inputs.
  • The machine can tolerate a homing cycle after an emergency stop or power interruption.

When absolute is worth the added integration

  • Workholding, tooling or the build surface could be damaged by an automatic homing move.
  • The machine must resume with known coordinates immediately after power loss.
  • The controller already supports the encoder’s serial protocol and configuration.
  • Safety or process requirements demand position confirmation before motion is enabled.

Absolute does not mean universally compatible. Serial formats such as SSI, BiSS, DRIVE-CLiQ or a vendor-specific protocol require matching controller hardware, firmware and parameter settings.

Will the encoder work with my CNC or printer controller?

Confirm the electrical interface before buying the mechanical scale. Fagor notes that signal selection must match communication protocols supported by the CNC and drives. Renishaw’s application checklist also calls out analogue versus digital output, interpolation clock, alarm type, reference and limit signals, protocol and cable extension.

Interface or signal family What must match Typical verification question
1 VPP analogue Input type, interpolation electronics, signal period, shielding and termination Does the drive or controller accept 1 VPP at this signal period?
Differential quadrature A/B phase, optional index, voltage standard, maximum input frequency and alarm wiring Can the input count the encoder’s maximum edge rate at full axis speed?
SSI or BiSS Protocol variant, clock rate, data format, cable length and controller firmware Does the controller support this exact absolute-data format?
DRIVE-CLiQ, FANUC or other vendor-specific link Approved device profile, connector, parameter set and diagnostic support Is the encoder listed as a supported device for this control?

Calculate the worst-case data rate: maximum axis speed divided by the smallest reported increment, with margin for interpolation and controller sampling. A long cable can add attenuation, noise and delay; use the encoder’s stated cable limit and the controller manufacturer’s wiring rules. RLS HiLin, for example, publishes a 10 m maximum cable length, while a different model may require a shorter run or a line driver.

Also check whether the controller closes the loop on the linear scale or merely displays it. Some CNC controls support full servo feedback; many 3D-printer boards expose no native linear-encoder input and require a dedicated motion controller, interface board or firmware modification.

How should I choose a linear encoder for a CNC machine?

For a CNC axis, prioritize protection and integration after establishing travel and accuracy. Coolant, chips and vibration can defeat an exposed scale even when its brochure resolution is excellent.

  1. Define the axis: record usable X, Y or Z travel, maximum speed, homing method and whether the scale will measure the moving table, saddle or tool carriage.
  2. Choose protection: start with a sealed housing or a proven cover and wiper arrangement for coolant and chips. Confirm the protection rating and cleaning procedure.
  3. Match accuracy to the process: relate scale accuracy over length to the tolerance of the parts, then account for thermal growth and machine geometry.
  4. Check mounting: follow the specified readhead gap and allowable yaw, pitch and roll. Provide a rigid datum and avoid mounting the scale across a joint that flexes under cutting load.
  5. Verify speed and feedback: compare maximum axis speed, signal frequency, controller input frequency and alarm behavior.
  6. Plan reference and limits: decide where the reference mark, limit switches and cable exits will sit before drilling or machining brackets.
  7. Validate temperature: identify the machine’s cold-start and warmed-up temperatures. A scale rated at 20 °C accuracy may need compensation when the bed, column or scale expands.

For long CNC axes, the published envelope matters. The LF 185 example supports axis lengths up to 3,040 mm, but that does not make it suitable for every 3,040 mm installation: mounting straightness, cable routing and controller compatibility still have to be checked.

What linear scale should I use on a 3D printer?

On a 3D printer, select the scale around the actual gantry or carriage travel, not the nominal bed size. A compact magnetic strip can fit where a rigid optical housing cannot, but it must be protected from filament dust, accidental contact and magnetic debris. The printer must also have firmware capable of reading the encoder and using it in a control loop; there is no universal 3D-printer controller compatibility standard.

Printer-specific checks

  • Axis mechanics: mount the scale parallel to the motion being measured, not to a decorative frame member that can twist relative to the nozzle.
  • Moving mass: keep the readhead, cable and brackets light enough that they do not introduce ringing or step-loss problems.
  • Heat: check temperatures near heated beds, enclosures and hot ends; protect the scale from radiant heat and rapid thermal cycling.
  • Dust and contact: cover magnetic tape and keep the readhead gap stable when the printhead or bed is serviced.
  • Firmware: verify input drivers, sampling rate, homing logic, fault handling and whether the firmware can stop or correct motion when feedback disagrees with commanded position.
  • Calibration: establish the scale’s zero and direction, then test travel at several speeds and temperatures before relying on closed-loop correction during a print.

For a hobby printer, an encoder can diagnose missed steps or improve repeatability, but it cannot compensate for a loose V-wheel, bent extrusion, slipping belt or flexible gantry. Fix those mechanical faults first.

Which installation and environmental specifications can ruin accuracy?

Installation often dominates the difference between a published specification and a working machine. Confirm every item below in the encoder’s installation drawing and controller manual.

  • Readhead gap: keep the gap within tolerance over the entire stroke; a bracket that flexes at one end can create position error.
  • Yaw, pitch and roll: align the readhead to the scale datum and measure angular error at both travel extremes.
  • Reference datum: understand whether the reference mark is fixed, selectable or supplied by a separate switch.
  • Thermal behavior: distinguish scale expansion from machine-structure expansion. A scale accurate at 20 °C may report a changing coordinate as the machine warms.
  • Speed: ensure the readhead response and controller input frequency cover the fastest commanded move with margin.
  • Shock and vibration: rigidly support the scale and prevent cable movement from tugging the readhead.
  • Protection and cleanliness: use sealed housings, wipers, covers or purge arrangements where coolant, chips or filament dust can reach the measuring track.
  • Cable and connector: follow bend radius, shielding, grounding and maximum-length rules; route feedback cables away from spindle, heater and stepper power wiring.

What are the most common selection and installation failures?

The scale is too short

Symptom: the axis reaches a limit before the readhead covers the commanded range, or the reference mark is outside the usable stroke. Fix: recalculate travel from software limits, add end margins and select the next measuring length rather than mounting the scale at its mechanical extreme.

The controller cannot read the signal

Symptom: no position, implausible counts or immediate feedback alarms. Fix: compare the exact signal type, voltage, protocol, clock or input frequency with the controller manual. An adapter is not automatically sufficient; it must preserve timing, diagnostics and reference information.

Position changes with speed or direction

Symptom: repeatability is good at low speed but poor during fast moves, or errors appear when reversing. Fix: inspect readhead gap, cable strain, vibration, interpolation rate and servo tuning. Check for mechanical backlash and guide binding rather than blaming encoder resolution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Accuracy drifts as the machine warms

Symptom: dimensions shift after spindle, bed or enclosure temperature changes. Fix: warm the machine consistently, measure scale and structure temperatures, and use the controller’s thermal compensation only after the mechanical installation is stable.

Noise creates false counts

Symptom: position jumps while motors, spindle or heaters switch. Fix: use differential signaling where available, shield and ground according to the manufacturer, separate feedback and power cables, terminate lines correctly and shorten the cable if the interface allows it.

The encoder reports position but does not improve motion

Symptom: software displays a coordinate while missed steps or cutting errors remain. Fix: verify that the controller actually closes the servo loop on the linear feedback and that its gains, limits and fault responses are configured. Display-only feedback cannot correct motion.

What should be on my final purchase checklist?

  • Usable axis travel plus end margins and reference-marker clearance
  • Available mounting length, profile height and service access
  • Required machine accuracy, repeatability and thermal range
  • Optical or magnetic technology suited to contamination and alignment conditions
  • Incremental or absolute behavior matched to homing and power-loss requirements
  • Exact controller protocol, signal type, voltage, input frequency and alarm wiring
  • Maximum axis speed and interpolation or serial clock requirements
  • Readhead gap, yaw, pitch and roll tolerances
  • Protection rating, cleaning method, shock and vibration limits
  • Cable length, bend radius, connector, shielding and grounding requirements
  • Firmware or CNC parameters needed to close the loop, home and handle faults
  • Total installed cost, including brackets, covers, interface electronics and commissioning

Ask the supplier for the installation drawing, electrical pinout, protocol documentation and a compatibility confirmation for your exact controller model. That documentation is more valuable than a headline resolution number.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a linear encoder eliminate CNC backlash completely?

It can measure the resulting axis position and let a capable control compensate for some backlash-related error, but it cannot remove mechanical looseness. Persistent play, flex or a shifting bearing still limits contour accuracy and may destabilize the feedback loop.

Where should the scale be mounted on a moving 3D-printer gantry?

Mount it as close as practical to the line of action you need to control, with the readhead and nozzle or tool sharing the same rigid structure. A scale attached to a frame member that twists independently can report a reassuring number while the nozzle is still displaced.

Does an absolute encoder remove the need for limit switches?

Not necessarily. Absolute position can remove a reference move, but limit switches may still be required for over-travel protection, safety circuits or machine-specific homing validation.

How can I test a newly installed scale before cutting or printing?

First check direction, zero and reference repeatability at low speed. Then make repeated moves across the full stroke at several speeds, log commanded versus reported position, and repeat after the machine reaches operating temperature; investigate any speed- or temperature-dependent error before enabling automatic compensation.
