Choose a foldable phone by weighing three different kinds of evidence: an independent battery test for the way you use a phone, the exact model’s ingress and construction ratings, and a written update promise for your country. On the cited cellular web-browsing test, Motorola’s razr fold lasted longest at 14 hours 44 minutes, while Google’s Pixel 10 Pro Fold led the group on ingress protection with IP68 and offers seven years of updates. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 combines a thin book-style design with seven years of operating-system and security updates, but its 4,400mAh cell and 10-hour-55-minute test result show why capacity alone is not a buying shortcut. The best choice depends on whether endurance, resistance to dust and water, or long-term software coverage matters most to you.
Which foldable phone lasts longest on a controlled battery test?
Among the cited book-style foldables, Motorola’s razr fold produced the longest result in Tom’s Guide’s cellular web-surfing test: 14 hours 44 minutes. Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold reached 12 hours 16 minutes, and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 reached 10 hours 55 minutes. These are results from one repeatable method, not a guarantee for every owner.

| Model | Listed battery capacity | Tom’s Guide cellular web-surfing result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Motorola razr fold | 6,000mAh | 14h 44m | Longest cited result; measured under Tom’s Guide’s cellular browsing procedure. |
| Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold | Not stated in the cited specifications | 12h 16m | Second in this test; Google separately claims up to 30+ hours, a manufacturer figure. |
| Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 | 4,400mAh | 10h 55m | Shorter in this test despite a book-style design; capacity and runtime are not interchangeable. |
| Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7 | 4,300mAh | Not stated in the cited test | Check an independent test that matches your cover-screen and inner-screen use before judging endurance. |
A cellular web test stresses the modem, browser, display and network connection continuously. Video recording, gaming, navigation, a weak signal, high brightness, cold weather and frequent use of the large inner panel can produce very different results. Treat the table as a controlled comparison, then look for a test using the same display, refresh-rate setting and network conditions as your routine.
How should I compare battery capacity, charging and real-world endurance?
Start with independent runtime, use capacity as context, and then check charging behavior. A larger milliamp-hour number can power a larger inner display, a brighter panel or a more demanding processor; it does not automatically mean longer time away from an outlet.

Use test conditions, not just headline hours
- Confirm whether the test used cellular data or Wi-Fi. Cellular testing generally places more demand on the modem.
- Check whether the phone stayed on the cover display, inner display or a scripted mix. A book-style foldable can consume much more power when opened for long sessions.
- Look for brightness, refresh-rate, video-loop and app details. A result without those conditions is difficult to compare fairly.
- Separate screen-on endurance from standby time. A phone that lasts overnight may still run down quickly during navigation or gaming.
Match the battery to your routine
Frequent commuters, travelers and field workers should give the controlled runtime result the greatest weight and carry a charging plan for weak-signal areas. If you mostly read messages on an outer display and open the phone for short work sessions, a lower capacity may be acceptable. If you use the inner screen as a tablet replacement, prioritize tests that keep that panel active rather than a cover-screen loop.
Interpret manufacturer claims carefully
Google advertises up to 30+ hours for Pixel 10 Pro Fold. “Up to” describes a company-defined scenario, not the same measurement as Tom’s Guide’s cellular browsing test. Motorola’s cited UK support page claims more than 43 hours for razr fold; that claim likewise should not be placed in the same ranking as an independent laboratory-style run.

Which foldable phone is most durable?
There is no single winner for every kind of damage. Pixel 10 Pro Fold has the strongest cited ingress rating, while Samsung and Motorola provide specific hinge-cycle claims or additional ratings. None of the cited sources supplies a standardized cross-brand drop, hinge-failure or repair-rate study.
| Model | Ingress rating in cited material | Hinge or construction evidence | Practical reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold | IP68 dust and water resistance | Google describes a gearless hinge, says it is twice as durable as the prior generation and can handle more than 10 years of folding. | Best documented protection against dust and water among these models; hinge statement is a manufacturer claim. |
| Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 | IP48 water resistance | Armor Aluminum; Samsung says the hinge was tested and verified for at least 200,000 folds, approximately 10 years based on average consumer folding behavior. | Strong published cycle target and a thin construction, but the rating is not equivalent to IP68. |
| Motorola razr fold | IP48 and IP49 on the cited UK support page | No comparable cross-brand field-failure rate is stated. | Additional protection ratings are useful, but regional documentation and repair terms need checking. |
| Samsung Galaxy Z Flip7 | IP48 water resistance | Samsung’s current care guidance applies to the model; no separate field-failure rate is supplied. | Compact flip format does not remove the need to protect the hinge and flexible display. |
What Pixel’s gearless hinge claim tells you
Google calls Pixel 10 Pro Fold its most durable foldable yet and says the new gearless hinge is twice as durable as the previous generation. The company also says the hinge can withstand more than 10 years of folding. Those statements describe Google’s testing and design target; they do not establish how often hinges fail in ordinary ownership or how much a particular drop will cost to repair.
What Samsung’s 200,000-fold figure means
Samsung’s Fold7 specification sheet says the hinge was tested and verified for at least 200,000 folds, approximately 10 years using average consumer folding behavior. A cycle test isolates repeated opening and closing under controlled conditions. It does not recreate sand, coins between the panels, torsion from one-handed opening, impact damage or a bent frame.

Why the flip form factor still needs care
Galaxy Z Flip7’s smaller folded footprint protects the inner panel from many pocket scratches, but every open-and-close movement still loads the hinge and flexible screen. Do not infer durability from size alone; inspect the model’s ingress rating, hinge warranty exclusions and local repair network.
What do IP ratings actually protect against?
An IP code records performance in controlled dust and water tests. It is not a promise that a phone will survive a pool, surf, dirty rainwater or a drop onto a wet floor.
- IP68 on Pixel 10 Pro Fold: the cited specification identifies dust and water resistance. The exact depth, duration and test conditions remain the limits of that certification, not permission for deliberate underwater use.
- IP48 on Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7: Samsung lists water resistance for these models. The “4” solids rating is not the same dust-tight designation as an “X8” or “6X8” style interpretation, so do not call IP48 dustproof.
- IP48 and IP49 on razr fold: Motorola’s cited UK page lists both ratings. Because regional pages can differ, verify the rating printed for the exact market and model number you plan to buy.
Ingress seals can weaken after impact, repair or ordinary wear. Salt water, chlorinated water, soap, hot water and fine grit can be more damaging than the fresh-water conditions used for certification. Dry the phone, keep ports clear and follow the manufacturer’s recovery guidance rather than testing the rating yourself.
Which manufacturer offers the longest software support?
Google and Samsung each publish seven years of coverage for the cited models. Motorola’s cited UK policy provides up to four years of security updates for razr fold, so the regional commitment is materially shorter unless another market’s policy says otherwise.
| Model | Published support promise | What is included | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pixel 10 Pro Fold | Seven years | Operating-system, security and Pixel Drop updates. | Google’s current product specifications; confirm the support start date for your market. |
| Galaxy Z Fold7 | Seven years | Operating-system and security updates. | Samsung’s current specification sheet; the clock and cadence should be checked for the exact sales region. |
| Galaxy Z Flip7 | Seven years | Operating-system and security updates. | Same Samsung support policy cited for the current generation; verify regional terms. |
| Motorola razr fold | Up to four years of security updates | Security coverage; the cited wording does not establish seven years of OS upgrades. | Motorola UK support page; “up to” and regional policy make the exact end date important. |
Calculate the support end date before paying
Find the manufacturer’s support page for your country, identify the model number, and record the date from which the promise starts. A phone launched later or sold by a different carrier can have a different support window. Ask whether security patches arrive monthly, quarterly or only when a critical issue is found, and whether replacement parts will remain available for the same period.

Why updates matter more on foldables
Foldables combine a conventional outer display with a large inner panel and specialized hinge sensors. Continued operating-system updates can add compatibility fixes for multitasking, camera behavior and accessories; security updates reduce exposure as the phone ages. A shorter support term can turn an otherwise durable hinge into a poor long-term value if you intend to keep the phone for many years.
Should I buy a book-style foldable or a flip phone?
Choose a book-style model when you need a large workspace for documents, split-screen apps or editing. Choose a flip model when pocketability and one-handed outer-screen tasks matter more than tablet-like multitasking.
Book-style strengths and trade-offs
- The inner display can replace a small tablet for email, spreadsheets, reading and two-app layouts.
- The larger open panel usually demands more power during intensive sessions and costs more to repair.
- Weight, folded thickness and the narrow cover display can affect typing and pocket comfort.
- Stylus support, camera layout and desktop-style software vary by model; confirm each feature rather than assuming it is included.
Flip-style strengths and trade-offs
- A compact folded shape fits smaller pockets and can reduce accidental inner-screen contact with keys or coins.
- The outer display can handle quick replies, timers and music controls without opening the phone.
- The smaller battery and display do not prove poor endurance; demand an independent test using the cover-screen habits you expect.
- The central crease, flexible panel and hinge remain service considerations even when the phone is closed.
How can I extend a foldable phone’s useful life?
Care practices address the everyday hazards that laboratory ratings cannot. Samsung’s guidance is especially explicit about debris and folding force, and its current Z Fold7 and Z Flip7 guidance says to avoid beach and pool use.
- Inspect before closing: remove cards, coins, keys and grit from both panels. Samsung specifically warns that objects between the screens can damage the display.
- Use gentle motion: open and close along the hinge without forcing the panels flat or snapping them shut. Samsung says not to use excessive force when unfolding or folding.
- Keep liquids realistic: avoid beaches, pools, hot tubs, showers and salty or soapy water even when an IP rating is present.
- Protect the hinge in transit: use a case designed for the exact model, keep the phone away from loose metal objects and do not press on the crease.
- Follow screen-film rules: leave the factory inner protector in place unless the manufacturer or an authorized repair center instructs otherwise. An ordinary rigid protector can interfere with folding.
- Document damage early: photograph a hinge gap, bubbling film, dead pixels or liquid indicator before attempting a repair, then contact authorized support while the device is within its warranty terms.
How do I choose between the four models?
Use a weighted decision instead of a single “best foldable” label. Give each factor a score from one to five, multiply by its importance to you, and compare the totals.

Choose endurance first when charging access is scarce
The cited test makes razr fold the endurance leader among the listed book-style devices. Accept the trade-off that its cited UK support commitment is shorter and that battery claims from Motorola and Google use different methods than Tom’s Guide.

Choose ingress protection and support first when longevity is the priority
Pixel 10 Pro Fold is the clearest fit when you value the strongest cited IP rating and a seven-year update commitment. Galaxy Z Fold7 is a strong alternative when a thin book-style body, Samsung’s software ecosystem and a published hinge-cycle test matter more than matching Pixel’s ingress rating.
Choose pocketability first for a flip
Galaxy Z Flip7 targets buyers who want a compact folded phone and the same seven-year OS and security promise Samsung lists for the current generation. Because the cited material does not provide a comparable runtime result, make battery testing for your own cover-screen pattern a purchase condition.
What should I verify before ordering?
- Exact regional model: compare the model number, IP wording, battery specification and update policy on the support page for your country.
- Warranty scope: check whether hinge wear, inner-screen film, liquid exposure and accidental drops are excluded or covered through an optional plan.
- Repair access: find an authorized service location and ask for the price and turnaround for an inner display, hinge or battery replacement.
- Accessories: confirm that a case does not block the hinge, wireless charging coil, cover display or stylus storage.
- Return period: use it to test cellular endurance, crease visibility, typing comfort and one-handed handling under your normal routine.
Prices and availability change quickly, and support language can differ by market. Save a copy of the policy shown at purchase so you can establish what was promised if the wording changes later.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I safely use a foldable phone in the rain?
Light rain is within the kind of controlled exposure an ingress rating is intended to address, but it is not a guarantee against every liquid. Keep the phone away from salt, chlorine, soap and hot water, dry it before folding, and never charge it while wet.
Should I remove the factory screen protector from a foldable?
Usually no. The inner film is part of the display system and an incompatible replacement can lift at the crease or interfere with closing. If it bubbles or peels, have an authorized service center replace it rather than applying a rigid protector yourself.
Does a hinge-cycle rating cover accidental drops?
No. Cycle figures measure repeated opening and closing in controlled conditions. A single impact, twisted frame or debris trapped between panels can cause damage long before the stated cycle count.
How can I tell whether a support promise applies to my imported phone?
Match the device’s model number and sales region with the manufacturer’s local support page. Imported variants may follow the policy of the country where they were sold, and carrier firmware can have a different update schedule.
