Choose an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) by adding the real wattage of every network device that must stay on, then selecting a UPS whose output watts and VA ratings both exceed that total. Use the manufacturer’s runtime chart at your calculated load to decide whether it will cover a brief flicker, a longer outage, or the time needed to start another power source. Also verify battery-backed outlets, plug and voltage compatibility, transfer behavior, waveform, surge protection, and battery replacement support. A UPS can keep your modem, router, ONT, access points, and switches powered locally, but it cannot ensure that your internet provider’s street equipment or wider network still has power.

What does a UPS do for a modem and router?

A UPS combines a battery, charger, inverter, and switching circuitry so connected equipment can continue receiving power when household electricity fails. In normal operation it passes utility power through while charging the battery; during an interruption it switches the load to battery power. APC’s UPS buying guidance specifically lists wireless networking equipment, including routers and modems, as a suitable use case.

The practical benefit is continuity inside your home: a powered modem or optical network terminal (ONT), router, mesh node, or Ethernet switch can keep local devices connected and may preserve internet access while the provider’s network remains operational. The UPS only supports equipment physically plugged into its battery-backed outlets. It does not supply electricity to an ISP node, cabinet, street cabinet, or upstream data center, so ask your provider what backup systems protect its access network.

How much power do a modem and router use?

Published figures are useful for an initial check, but your equipment’s label or specification is the value that determines sizing. An Anker SOLIX article reports typical estimates of 10–20 watts for a modem and 10–25 watts for a router. Those are vendor estimates, not measurements of your particular units, and a modem-router gateway, Wi-Fi 6/7 radio, mesh system, or heavily loaded switch can differ.

Device Vendor-published typical estimate How to use it
Modem 10–20 W Use only as a rough planning range; read the adapter or device specification for your model.
Router 10–25 W Use only as a rough planning range; account for a separate Wi-Fi system, USB devices, or attached accessories.

If the modem and router are separate, count both. If your provider supplied a gateway that combines their functions, count the gateway once at its stated input draw. Add every other device that must remain powered: an ONT, mesh satellite, wireless access point, Ethernet switch, security appliance, or network controller. Do not include a computer, television, printer, or other load unless you genuinely need it during the outage; each additional watt reduces runtime.

How do I calculate the UPS size?

Calculate the load in watts first, then check VA independently. UPS manufacturers treat these as separate limits: the watt rating describes the real power the inverter can deliver, while VA (volt-amperes) also reflects the electrical characteristics of the load. A unit can have enough VA on paper but still be unable to supply the required watts, so never choose by VA alone.

1. List only the equipment that needs backup

Write down each device that must stay on during an outage. A typical list might include the ISP modem or ONT, the main router, one mesh node or access point, and an Ethernet switch. If a device can be switched off without affecting the connection you need, leave it out of the UPS load.

2. Read each power label or specification

Look at the device’s power brick, rear label, user manual, or manufacturer specification for input watts. Some adapters show volts and amps rather than watts; use the watt figure supplied by the manufacturer when available. If a specification gives a maximum input value, treat it as the conservative planning number rather than assuming the device always draws less.

3. Add the watt values

Sum the modem or ONT, router, access points, mesh nodes, and switches. For example, if the labels total 14 W, 18 W, 9 W, and 12 W, the connected load is 53 W. This arithmetic is only an example of the method; your labels determine the real result.

4. Leave capacity above the total

Select a UPS whose maximum output in watts is higher than the combined load, with room for startup variation and future equipment. Schneider Electric’s guidance emphasizes choosing output capacity above the load and retaining headroom. Eaton’s buying guide gives a rule of thumb of multiplying total wattage by 1.2 for future expansion. That 1.2 factor is manufacturer guidance, not a universal requirement: use more margin if you expect to add a high-draw switch or another access point.

5. Check the VA rating separately

After the watt calculation, confirm that the UPS VA rating also exceeds the connected equipment’s requirement according to the UPS maker’s specification. The two ratings describe different constraints. A higher VA number does not compensate for an insufficient watt rating, and a large watt rating does not remove the need to satisfy the VA limit.

How do I choose the runtime?

Runtime depends on the load, battery capacity, battery age, inverter efficiency, and the UPS operating mode. Use the manufacturer’s runtime chart at a watt load close to your calculated total. A runtime statement such as “up to” is not a guarantee for your devices or for an aging battery.

Match runtime to the outage you are trying to bridge

Goal Selection approach
Brief interruptions and voltage dips Prioritize dependable transfer, surge protection, and enough watt/VA capacity; a small runtime may be sufficient.
Several minutes while you shut down equipment Use the runtime chart at your complete load and choose a model that leaves time for an orderly shutdown.
Longer outages or a bridge until another source starts Compare models with larger batteries or supported external battery capacity, using the chart for the exact load.

Adding connected equipment shortens runtime because the inverter must supply more power. More battery capacity can increase runtime, but Eaton explicitly warns that adding battery packs does not increase the UPS’s maximum power output. If the UPS is already undersized in watts or VA, an extra battery cannot make it safe to connect a larger load.

Read charts at your real load, not at zero or a headline value

Runtime charts usually show several watt-load points. Find the row or curve nearest your calculated total, then account for the fact that a mesh node or switch may be added later. If your load falls between chart points, treat the lower runtime shown by the neighboring entries as the safer planning reference rather than interpolating an exact promise.

Which UPS features matter for networking equipment?

Battery-backed outlets

Many UPS units have a mixture of battery-backed outlets and surge-only outlets. Surge-only sockets can filter or divert a transient, but they do not keep equipment running when mains power disappears. Count how many devices need continuous power and ensure that many battery-backed sockets are available. Leave surge-only outlets for equipment that does not need to operate during an outage.

Transfer behavior

Transfer time is the interval between loss of utility power and battery output. Check the manufacturer’s specification and the tolerance of each connected device. A modem or router that reboots during a transfer defeats the purpose of the backup, so favor a model whose stated behavior is compatible with your equipment rather than assuming every UPS switches identically.

Automatic voltage regulation

Automatic voltage regulation (AVR) can correct certain high- or low-voltage conditions without using the battery. It is useful where the supply regularly sags or rises, but it does not increase battery energy or the UPS watt rating. Treat AVR as a power-quality feature, not a substitute for capacity.

Output waveform

APC explains that pure sine-wave output offers broader compatibility with active-power-factor-correction (active-PFC) supplies. Eaton likewise notes that waveform can matter for sensitive equipment and directs buyers to verify the specification. Do not assume every modem or router requires pure sine wave; check the UPS and device documentation, especially if the same unit will power equipment with an active-PFC power supply.

Surge protection and grounding

Use a UPS with documented surge protection and connect it to a properly grounded wall receptacle. A UPS does not make unsafe household wiring safe, and a protected outlet cannot compensate for a missing ground or an overloaded circuit. Follow the installation and grounding requirements for the exact model and your country’s electrical system.

Battery replacement

Battery support matters because sealed batteries lose capacity over time. Check whether the manufacturer offers a replacement cartridge for the exact model, how replacement is performed, and whether the UPS can signal a failing battery. Schneider Electric notes that replacement cartridges exist depending on the model; compatibility is model-specific, so do not buy a generic pack solely because the voltage appears similar.

Monitoring, alarms, and network management

An audible alarm can warn you that the UPS is on battery or overloaded, while a display or monitoring connection can show load, estimated runtime, and battery status. These features are optional for a basic home installation but valuable when the UPS is in a cabinet or supports equipment that must shut down automatically. Confirm which readings the exact model actually provides rather than assuming every product includes a USB interface or software.

Plug, voltage, and physical fit

Choose a UPS designed for your country’s wall-plug pattern and nominal voltage. Verify the input and output voltage range, socket spacing, cord length, and clearance for the power bricks used by your modem and router. A unit that fits electrically but cannot accommodate bulky adapters may force you to use an extension lead, which can conflict with the UPS maker’s safety instructions.

How should I compare two UPS models?

Compare models using the same calculated load and the same runtime target. A larger VA number alone does not make one unit better; the meaningful comparison includes watt capacity, charted runtime, outlet layout, transfer behavior, waveform, battery support, and local electrical compatibility.

Comparison point What to verify Why it matters
Maximum output watts Rated watts exceed your combined load with headroom. Prevents inverter overload and nuisance shutdowns.
VA rating VA limit independently exceeds the load requirement. Handles the apparent-power characteristics of connected supplies.
Runtime chart Published runtime at a watt load near your calculation. Provides a model-specific estimate instead of a vague headline claim.
Battery-backed outlets Enough continuously powered sockets for every required device. Surge-only sockets do not operate during an outage.
Transfer behavior Documented transfer characteristics and device compatibility. Reduces the chance of a modem or router rebooting during changeover.
Voltage regulation AVR details and operating range. Can correct some supply variations without consuming battery energy.
Waveform Output type and compatibility guidance. Important for some sensitive or active-PFC power supplies.
Battery replacement Supported cartridge and procedure for the exact model. Allows service after the original battery loses capacity.
Plug and voltage Input/output standards for your location. Determines whether the UPS can be installed safely in your home.
Monitoring and warranty Alarm, display, software, warranty terms, and efficiency claims. Helps match maintenance and visibility needs to your installation.

How do I connect and test a UPS for my network?

Set up the UPS so the devices that form your connection path remain powered together. The following sequence avoids the common mistake of protecting only the router while leaving the modem or ONT unpowered.

  1. Confirm the electrical requirements. Read the UPS input/output voltage and plug specifications, and make sure the wall receptacle is grounded and appropriate for the unit.
  2. Charge the UPS. Follow the model’s charging instructions before relying on it for an outage. Keep ventilation clear and place it where the battery and alarm can be monitored.
  3. Identify the connection path. Mark the modem or ONT, router, mesh nodes or access points, and switches that must stay online.
  4. Connect essential devices to battery-backed outlets. Do not mistake surge-only sockets for battery outlets. Leave nonessential equipment disconnected or on surge-only protection.
  5. Check the load display or software. Compare the reported load with your watt calculation and the UPS’s maximum output. Investigate an unexpectedly high reading before adding equipment.
  6. Verify startup. Turn on the networking devices and confirm that each receives power without an overload alarm. Check that the modem or ONT establishes its normal link before testing the router.
  7. Perform a controlled outage test. With important work saved and a way to restore utility power, disconnect the UPS input or use its documented test function. Confirm that the modem, router, and required access points remain on and that local clients can still reach the network.
  8. Restore utility power and review status. Ensure the UPS returns to line operation, begins recharging, and reports no fault. Record the connected devices and model details so a future battery replacement uses the correct part.

A local Wi-Fi connection during the test does not prove that the ISP is still reachable during a neighborhood outage. Test only the UPS-to-device behavior; provider-side resilience is a separate matter.

What common UPS problems should I troubleshoot?

The UPS shuts down or overloads

Recheck the watt total and VA requirement, then remove nonessential equipment. A battery extension cannot correct an output rating that is too small. Inspect for a device accidentally connected to a battery-backed socket, such as a monitor, printer, or desktop computer that was not included in the calculation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Runtime is shorter than the chart

Confirm that your actual load matches the chart’s watt point and that no additional access point, switch, or USB-powered device was added. Runtime also changes as batteries age and with operating conditions. Use the manufacturer’s battery-status indication and replacement guidance for the exact model instead of treating the chart as a guarantee.

The router reboots when power fails

Check that both the modem or ONT and router are on battery-backed outlets and that the UPS transfer behavior is compatible with their power supplies. A router cannot maintain an internet session if its upstream modem or ONT loses power. If the devices remain powered but still restart, review the UPS waveform and transfer specifications against the device documentation.

An alarm sounds immediately

An immediate overload or fault alarm warrants checking the connected watt/VA load, outlet assignment, and UPS status indicators. Disconnect equipment one item at a time until the alarm condition clears, then compare the remaining load with the ratings. Do not silence a persistent fault without identifying its cause.

The UPS is on battery even when the lights are on

Voltage outside the unit’s acceptable range, a loose plug, or a tripped circuit can make the UPS support the load from its battery. Check the wall connection and the UPS input status, then review the operating range and AVR behavior in the manual. Repeated transfers may consume battery capacity even when the outage is not obvious.

Does efficiency matter when choosing a network UPS?

Efficiency matters for a UPS that remains plugged in year-round because conversion losses become continuous energy use. ENERGY STAR says certified UPS products can reduce energy waste by up to 52 percent compared with conventional UPS battery backups. That is a comparison of product energy performance, not a promise that your household electricity bill will fall by 52 percent; actual savings depend on load, operating mode, and usage.

Use efficiency as a tie-breaker after confirming watt and VA capacity, runtime, outlets, and compatibility. A highly efficient unit that cannot support your equipment or does not provide the required runtime is the wrong choice.

What should I check before buying?

  • Write down the modem or ONT, router, mesh nodes, access points, and switches that must remain on.
  • Record each device’s specified input watts and add them.
  • Choose output watts above the total, using additional headroom for expansion; Eaton’s 1.2-times rule is a manufacturer example.
  • Confirm the VA rating separately.
  • Read the runtime chart at a load close to your total.
  • Count battery-backed outlets, not just total outlets.
  • Check transfer behavior, AVR, waveform, and surge-protection specifications against your equipment.
  • Verify the plug pattern, voltage, placement, ventilation, and cord reach for your location.
  • Confirm that a replacement battery is available for the exact model.
  • Decide whether alarms, a display, USB monitoring, warranty coverage, and efficiency certification justify a higher price.
  • Ask your ISP how its access network is powered during local outages; a home UPS cannot answer that question.

How do I know whether a larger battery or a larger UPS is needed?

Choose a larger UPS when the equipment exceeds the current unit’s watt or VA limit. Choose additional battery capacity when the output rating is already sufficient but the runtime chart does not meet your outage goal. These are different upgrades: extra batteries can extend operating time, while the UPS inverter still has the same maximum output.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should a modem-and-router UPS battery be replaced?

There is no single replacement interval that applies to every UPS. Follow the exact model’s maintenance guidance and replace the battery when its status indication or runtime test shows significant loss of capacity. Confirm the manufacturer’s cartridge part number before ordering, because replacement support and compatibility vary by model.

Can I use a UPS with a fiber ONT instead of a cable modem?

Yes, treat the ONT as one of the network loads that must remain powered. Include its label wattage in the same calculation as the router and any access points, and make sure its power adapter fits a battery-backed outlet. Keeping the ONT powered still does not guarantee that the provider’s fiber access equipment has backup power.

Why does my UPS show a high percentage load when the router uses only a few watts?

The displayed percentage may reflect the UPS’s minimum operating range, the combined draw of several adapters, or apparent power rather than the single router’s label value. Check every connected device and compare the display with the model’s stated watt and VA readings. If the indication remains unexpectedly high, remove nonessential loads and contact the manufacturer before expanding the setup.

Does a UPS protect Ethernet or coax lines as well as power?

Power backup and line protection are separate functions. Some UPS models include network or coaxial surge ports, but you must verify that feature and its connector standards on the exact unit. The basic battery-backed outlets alone keep the connected power supplies running; they do not establish protection for every incoming communications cable.
