Choose a 3D printer by starting with the parts you need to make—not the biggest build volume or fastest speed on the box. For most general-purpose projects, an FDM printer is the practical starting point; choose resin when very fine detail and smooth surfaces matter more than a simpler, lower-mess workflow. Then check that the printer fits your parts, supports your materials, and can produce reliable first layers in the space where you will use it.

How do I choose a 3D printer?

Work backward from the job: list the objects you expect to print, the materials they need, the detail or strength they require, and how often a failed print would disrupt your work. Those answers determine whether you need filament or resin, how much build volume is useful, what hardware and workspace are required, and which quality-of-life features matter.

Use this order to narrow the choice:

  1. Define the parts. Record the largest recurring part’s width, depth, and height. Note whether it can be split into sections and assembled.
  2. Choose the process. Favor FDM for broad everyday use and filament-based parts; favor resin when fine miniature features or a smooth surface are central to the result.
  3. Name the materials. Check that the printer’s nozzle temperature, feed system, enclosure, and other hardware suit the plastics or resin you actually plan to use.
  4. Compare useful speed. Look for print times at your intended material and quality settings, not just the maximum speed figure.
  5. Assess repeatability and ownership. Consider first-layer automation, monitoring, maintenance, support, software, consumables, and the consequences of failed prints.

Accuracy and repeatability depend on more than the printer model: 3D Systems identifies part size, material, geometry, post-processing, and orientation as factors. That is why a specification sheet can narrow the field but cannot promise a particular result for every part.

What build volume do I need?

Choose a build volume that accommodates the largest parts you regularly expect to print, with room for supports and the bed-adhesion approach the part needs. The three dimensions matter separately: a printer that is wide enough may still be too short, too shallow, or too low for your object.

Measure parts, not aspirations

Measure the actual part or a realistic prototype in width, depth, and height, then compare each measurement with the printer’s usable build dimensions. Leave clearance for supports and for the way the part must sit on the build surface. A large object that only appears in a one-off project may not justify a much larger machine if it can be divided into pieces.

Splitting a large prop into sections can make printing, sanding, painting, and assembly easier, according to Prusa’s buying guidance. But that option introduces joining and finishing work; decide whether that trade-off suits the object rather than assuming the printer must fit the entire finished piece in one print.

Consider the machine around the part

Build volume is not the same as the space the printer occupies. Check the machine’s external dimensions and leave room for access, maintenance, and the workflow around it. This is especially important if the printer is enclosed or if the process requires ventilation or post-processing equipment.

Prusa’s current catalog illustrates how much the category can vary: CORE One+ is listed from $1,299; CORE One L+ offers 30 litres of enclosed volume from $1,999; and XL+ supports up to five tools from $2,299. These are catalog examples, not a general price ladder or a claim that a larger model is the right fit for every user. Verify the listing and price for your region before buying.

Is FDM or resin better?

Neither technology is universally better. FDM is the broader default for everyday objects, prototypes, cosplay, and many small-business uses; resin is a detail-first choice for small, intricate objects where surface finish and fine features matter more than a low-mess workflow.

Consideration FDM / filament Resin / SLA or MSLA
How it forms a part Melts solid filament and deposits it in layers. Uses liquid resin in a process suited to small, highly detailed objects.
Good fit Everyday objects, cosplay, prototypes, and a broad range of general-purpose parts. Miniatures, jewelry patterns, or other parts where fine detail and smooth surfaces are priorities.
Common starting point Standard PLA is a forgiving first material, according to Prusa. Choose only if the extra handling and post-processing fit your workspace and routine.
Workflow considerations Material choice, feed system, nozzle, and enclosure affect which plastics are practical. Liquid chemicals require ventilation and safety gear; parts need washing and other post-processing, including curing.

When does FDM make sense?

FDM is a sensible first printer if you want one machine for a variety of objects and do not need the especially fine detail associated with resin. PLA is a common starting material because it is forgiving for beginners. Other commonly used options include PETG and TPU, while more demanding engineering plastics call for greater attention to printer capability and setup.

For a new owner, the practical advantage is not that FDM requires no learning; it is that the process can cover many everyday jobs without requiring the resin washing and curing workflow. The result still depends on material choice, geometry, orientation, and settings.

When is resin worth the extra handling?

Resin is worth considering when small details or surface finish are essential to the object. Prusa describes resin printing as suited to tiny, highly detailed objects, but the liquid chemicals make it a more involved workflow: plan for ventilation and safety gear, plus washing and post-processing. If the printer will run in a space where those requirements are impractical, a detail advantage may not outweigh the operating constraints.

One current resin example is Formlabs’ Form 4. Its technical specifications list a 20.0 × 12.5 × 21.0 cm build volume, a 50 µm pixel size, and 23 materials. Those are Form 4-specific specifications, not universal resin-printer capabilities.

Which materials should the printer support?

Choose materials from the parts you intend to make, then check the printer’s hardware against those materials. A machine advertised as supporting a material may still need the right temperature capability, enclosure, or feed system to use it effectively.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start with the actual material list

For general-purpose FDM, PLA is a reasonable first choice; PETG and TPU broaden the options for different kinds of parts. Tom’s Hardware gives approximate extrusion temperatures of 220–230 °C for PETG and TPU, and 240–250 °C for ABS and nylon. These figures are useful screening guidance, not a substitute for the specific filament maker’s requirements or the printer’s documented limits.

TPU also benefits from a direct-drive feed system, according to Tom’s Hardware. If flexible material is part of your plan, check the feed path rather than assuming every filament printer will handle it equally well.

What changes with engineering plastics?

ASA, nylon, polycarbonate, and carbon-fiber blends are more demanding than a beginner material. Prusa recommends a fully enclosed printer and hardened nozzle for engineering materials; the enclosure helps stabilize temperature for warp-prone plastics such as ASA and nylon. Confirm the machine’s temperature capability and material compatibility rather than relying on the word “enclosed” alone.

Material affects the result as well as machine requirements: Prusa’s guidance emphasizes that the plastic used dictates print quality. A printer that meets the dimensional requirement but cannot reliably handle the intended material is not a good match for the job.

How fast should a 3D printer be?

Judge speed by the time required to make your parts at the material and quality you need. A maximum figure is not a promise that every print will run at that rate: material, layer height, geometry, and quality settings all affect print time.

For one clearly specified example, Formlabs lists the Form 4 at a maximum speed of 100 mm/hour and an average speed of 40 mm/hour across all materials in its current technical specifications. These are manufacturer figures for that model and process; they should not be treated as a direct speed ranking against FDM machines or as a guaranteed time for a particular object.

Ask a seller or consult the model’s own documentation for realistic times using your intended material and quality settings. If you have a representative part, compare estimates for that part rather than comparing unlike headline figures. A quick print that misses the finish or fit you need can cost more time if it must be repeated.

Which 3D printer is most reliable?

There is no universal “most reliable” printer established by the available figures here. For your decision, reliability means consistently getting acceptable parts without avoidable reprints, with a first layer and machine that remain dependable over repeated jobs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prusa’s practical point is that a reliable machine producing a good part on the first try can save more time than a faster machine that forces a reprint. First-layer performance is central: a perfect first layer is a key to printing success, so treat the quality and dependability of the first-layer system as a core buying criterion, not a minor convenience.

Features that can reduce avoidable failures

  • Automatic bed leveling and a dependable first-layer system: these address a common source of failed starts.
  • Filament runout and jam detection: these can alert you to feed interruptions during a job.
  • Power-loss recovery: useful to consider if an interrupted print would be costly.
  • Rigid motion system and calibration: evaluate the machine’s design and available calibration process, rather than assuming a speed claim implies consistent output.
  • Maintained slicer profiles and stable software: the software workflow is part of getting predictable results, not an afterthought.
  • Accessible replacement parts and support: check how you would resolve a fault and obtain parts before a breakdown occurs.

Formlabs lists 98.7% reliability for the Form 4, measured by an independent third-party lab, in its current technical specifications. This is a model-specific figure reported by the manufacturer; it does not establish a universal ranking or guarantee that an individual user will achieve the same result across different parts, materials, and workflows.

What else should I check before buying?

A printer is part of a workspace and a production workflow. Confirm that the machine’s software, noise, ventilation needs, maintenance demands, and support arrangements suit the people and room where it will be used.

Workspace, noise, and safety

Consider noise and the printer’s enclosure when choosing where it will run. Prusa notes that an enclosed chamber helps with ASA and nylon, and can also reduce noise and access to hot components. Resin printing has different workspace requirements: plan for ventilation, safety gear, and the washing and curing steps before bringing liquid resin into your workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Software and monitoring

Check the slicer and its maintained profiles for the printer and materials you intend to use. Also review what the printer can monitor or detect, including runout or jams, and how it handles a power interruption. An easy-to-use interface is useful, but it does not replace appropriate profiles, calibration, and a dependable first layer.

Maintenance and support

Look for accessible replacement parts, clear maintenance requirements, and support that you can use in your location. Consumable or wear items vary by process: an FDM workflow may need nozzles and build surfaces, while resin printing involves resin tanks and washing or curing equipment. Compare the upkeep of the full workflow, not only the printer itself.

How much does a 3D printer cost to own?

The purchase price is only one part of ownership. Budget for the printer, its materials, consumables, tools, any process-specific equipment, and failed prints. Prusa’s buying guide gives indicative machine-price bands of $200–$500 for entry-level, $500–$1,990 for mid-range, and $2,000-plus for professional systems. Treat those as guide figures rather than guaranteed current prices.

The same guide estimates that regular users may spend about $20–$50 per month on filament. That is an indicative estimate, not a universal monthly bill: use depends on what and how often you print. Resin owners should also account for resin and the equipment and supplies needed for washing and post-processing; the supplied price bands do not establish a comparable resin-specific monthly cost.

Before choosing a model, add up the items that apply to your workflow:

  • Filament or resin, plus the cost of material consumed by failed prints.
  • FDM build sheets and replacement nozzles, or resin tanks and washing or curing equipment.
  • Ventilation provisions and safety gear where the process requires them.
  • Basic tools and any replacement parts or maintenance supplies.

  1. Write down the largest recurring part’s width, depth, and height; decide whether it can be split and assembled.
  2. Choose FDM or resin according to the required detail, strength, surface finish, and workspace.
  3. List the materials you genuinely need. Verify the required nozzle temperature, enclosure, and feed system against the printer.
  4. Compare plausible print times at your target layer height, material, and quality—not only maximum speed.
  5. Check first-layer automation, monitoring, software and profiles, spare parts, warranty, and support for your location.
  6. Budget for materials, process-specific consumables and equipment, tools, and the cost of failed prints.

For an FDM setup, Prusa names quality 1.75 mm PLA filament, flush cutters, pliers, hex keys, and compatible print sheets as useful essentials. These are practical starting items, not a universal kit requirement for every printer; check the model’s compatibility before buying a sheet or other part.

How should I make the final decision?

Pick the smallest and simplest printer that meets your recurring part-size, material, quality, and workflow requirements. Move to a larger or more capable machine only when a real job requires it—such as a part that will not fit even when split, a material that needs a specific enclosure or feed system, or a level of detail that points to resin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Then compare the shortlist on dependable first layers, realistic print times, software, serviceability, and total ownership cost. A fast machine is useful only if it makes the part you need at acceptable quality, and a large build volume is valuable only when your work uses it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a printer’s advertised reliability percentage predict my success rate?

Not by itself. For example, the Form 4’s 98.7% figure is a manufacturer-reported result measured by an independent third-party lab; it is not a guarantee for every user, material, or part.

Can I use a carbon-fiber filament in any FDM printer?

No. Prusa recommends a hardened nozzle and a fully enclosed printer for engineering materials such as carbon-fiber blends. Confirm the exact filament and machine compatibility before using one.

Why can two prints with the same height take different amounts of time?

Print time also depends on material, layer height, geometry, and quality settings. A speed number alone therefore does not predict the time for a particular object.
