On your PS5, go to Settings > System > System Software > Console Information and write down the value shown beside system software version, including every digit and decimal point. That is the version to compare with the current documentation for any specific third-party project; Sony’s “Up to date” label only indicates that the latest official system software is installed, not that jailbreak software supports your console.
Where do I find my PS5 system software version?
The version appears on the PS5’s Console Information screen. Sony’s support instructions and its safety guide give the same menu path:

- Turn on the PS5 and go to the home screen.
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select System Software.
- Select Console Information.
- Find system software version and copy the value exactly as displayed.
Keep the full version string intact. Do not omit digits, round the number, or substitute a description such as “old firmware.” A project may specify its own version requirements, and a general description is not precise enough to check against them.
What does “Up to date” mean on the screen?
Sony uses “Up to date” to indicate that the PS5 has the latest official system software. It is an update-status message, not a compatibility result for third-party or jailbreak software.

Likewise, seeing a version number on Console Information tells you what is installed; it does not tell you whether a particular exploit or project supports that version. Sony’s support material explains how to check, update, and recover system software, but does not certify jailbreak tools.
How should I check a version against a jailbreak project?
First record the installed version. Then consult the current documentation for the particular project you are evaluating and match its stated requirements to your console. Do not rely on a video title, an undated compatibility claim, or information about a different console model.
If the project documents more than one method, compare its own requirements for each method rather than treating them as interchangeable. Look for the following details in the project’s documentation:
- Supported firmware range: Check whether the exact version string you recorded is included, rather than assuming nearby versions are supported.
- Console model or hardware revision: Confirm whether the project limits support to particular hardware. A result for another model is not proof of support for yours.
- Network or USB requirements: Note whether the documented method needs network access or a USB device.
- Reboot behavior: Check what the project says about whether its effect persists after a reboot.
- Documentation date and version: Make sure you are reading the project’s current instructions; requirements can change.
If a project does not clearly document a requirement, treat compatibility as unconfirmed rather than filling the gap with a guess. The version screen is a way to identify your installed software, not a guarantee that a third-party method will work.

Sony documents an official USB procedure for manual updates and Safe Mode recovery. It requires a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, with a top-level folder named PS5, an UPDATE subfolder, and the update file named PS5UPDATE.PUP.
Those folder and file names are for Sony’s official maintenance process. A USB drive prepared for that process is not, by itself, a jailbreak tool, and Sony’s update instructions do not establish third-party compatibility.

For your own reference, note the exact system software version and the date you checked it. If you are assessing a named project, also keep the project documentation’s version or date and the requirements you matched against. This helps distinguish what your PS5 reported from what the project claimed to support at the time you checked.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Console Information show whether a jailbreak is safe to install?
No safety assessment is established by the version display. It reports the installed system software version; it does not evaluate third-party software or its risks.
Can I use the official PS5 update file for a jailbreak?
Sony’s named PS5UPDATE.PUP file is part of its official update or recovery workflow. The official instructions do not describe it as jailbreak software.
Does Sony publish an official PS5 jailbreak compatibility list?
The Sony support materials referenced here explain version checking and official maintenance, but do not provide or endorse a jailbreak compatibility table.
