To check your PS5 software, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. The installed version is shown there; Up to date means Sony has no newer release available to that console at that moment. For the safest routine update, use Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, choose Update System Software when Update Available appears, and leave the console connected to reliable power until installation finishes. If the download repeatedly fails, use Sony’s official USB file in Safe Mode. Reinstalling the system software is a last resort because it deletes all user data.
What does the PS5 system software version tell you?
The system software version identifies the operating software currently installed on your console. It is separate from a game’s version, a controller firmware version, or the model number printed on the console. Checking it is useful when troubleshooting a feature, confirming whether an update installed, or deciding whether a failed update requires a recovery method.

The Console Information screen also shows the console name, IP address, and MAC address. Those network details can help with router or support diagnostics, but do not share them publicly unless you understand the privacy implications.
“Up to date” is a status result, not a promise that every PS5 in every region has received an identical release at the same instant. Sony can distribute system software by region, hardware model, or staged availability. If the console reports that it is current, there is no newer package being offered to it through the normal update service at that time.

How do I check my PS5 system software version?
Use the Home screen and the Console Information page; no download or USB drive is required.
- From the PS5 Home screen, select Settings in the upper-right area.
- Open System.
- Select System Software.
- Choose Console Information.
- Read the value shown next to the system software version. If the page says Up to date, the console has the latest version currently offered to it.
Write down the complete version string if you are contacting support or comparing the console with another PS5. A partial number can make it difficult to distinguish a current release from an earlier one. This same screen is also where you can confirm the console name and network identifiers before a support session.

What should I do before starting an update?
Most updates are routine, but the installation stage must not be interrupted. A few minutes of preparation reduces the chance of a corrupted installation or an avoidable recovery exercise.
Use dependable power
Connect the PS5 directly to a stable outlet or a properly functioning surge-protected setup. Do not begin an update immediately before or after a known power outage, electrical work, or another situation in which the console could lose power. Sony warns that switching off the console during installation can damage it.
Keep the network stable for an online update
Use a reliable wired or wireless connection. If your connection regularly drops, postpone the update until it is stable or plan to use the official USB method instead. A failed download is inconvenient; a power interruption during installation is the more serious risk.
Do not confuse download time with installation time
The package may download while you continue using the console, but the PS5 will eventually restart or enter an installation phase. Save games, close applications, and tell anyone using the console that it must remain powered on until the process completes.

Sony recommends leaving the PS5 connected to the internet in Rest Mode with automatic downloads and updates enabled. This allows the console to obtain eligible releases without waiting for you to start a manual check. Rest Mode does not remove the need for reliable power; an outage can still interrupt an installation.
Back up before troubleshooting, not just before a reset
A normal update is designed to preserve your games, applications, saves, and settings. Nevertheless, if you are already dealing with repeated failures or are considering Safe Mode options that can erase data, make a current backup first. Reinstallation is explicitly destructive, so never select it casually.
How do I update a PS5 online?
Online updating is the lowest-friction path when the console reaches the Home screen and can download the package normally.

- Open Settings from the Home screen.
- Go to System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- Wait while the PS5 checks Sony’s update service. If a newer release is available, the screen shows Update Available.
- Select Update System Software.
- Read the on-screen information and accept the prompt to begin downloading.
- When the console asks to install or restart, allow it to do so. Do not unplug it, press the power button, or disconnect its network connection during installation.
- After the PS5 returns to the Home screen, repeat the version check at Settings > System > System Software > Console Information.
If the menu says that the console is up to date, there is no action to force through this path. Avoid downloading an update from an unofficial mirror or renaming a file obtained from an unknown source; use only the official Sony package and procedures.

What should I do if the PS5 update download is stuck?
First retry the download from the console’s transfer screen. A stalled download does not automatically mean the system software is damaged.
- Press the PS button on the controller.
- Open Downloads/Uploads.
- Highlight the system-software update.
- Choose View Error Info to read the reported problem.
- Select Try Again.
Keep the PS5 powered and connected while the retry runs. If the same download fails repeatedly, stop cycling through retries and move to the manual PC/Mac procedure. Repeatedly restarting the console during a transfer can make it harder to tell whether the problem is the network, the download package, or the installation itself.
If the PS5 cannot reach the Home screen, the online menu is unavailable. In that situation, use Safe Mode and the official USB update file rather than trying to navigate a normal update menu that the console cannot display.
How do I update a PS5 from a USB drive?
The USB method is a recovery path for repeated online-download failures or a console that cannot complete the normal update. You need a PC or Mac, a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, and a USB cable for the controller in Safe Mode.

- Use a USB drive with a FAT32 or exFAT file system. Sony’s guidance says the update file needs approximately 1.1 GB of free space.
- At the top level of the drive, create a folder named
PS5. - Inside that folder, create a second folder named
UPDATE. - Download the official PS5 system-software update file from Sony’s support page.
- Save the file inside the
UPDATEfolder with the exact filenamePS5UPDATE.PUP.
The folder names and filename are case-sensitive for this procedure. The structure must be exactly USB drive/PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP; placing the file beside the folders, adding another extension, or using a spelling variation can make Safe Mode report that it cannot find the update.
Start the update in Safe Mode
- Turn the PS5 completely off. If it is on, hold the power button for about three seconds until the console shuts down.
- Press and hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep; Sony describes the second beep as occurring about seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable. Wireless pairing is not the expected input method in this screen.
- Press the PS button on the connected controller.
- Insert the prepared USB drive.
- Select Update System Software.
- Choose Update from USB Storage Device, then select OK.
- Leave the console connected to power while it verifies, copies, and installs the file.
When the process finishes, let the PS5 restart normally. Remove the USB drive only after the console has completed the installation and returned to a normal operating state. Then verify the installed version from Console Information.
How do I enter PS5 Safe Mode correctly?
Safe Mode loads a limited menu for recovery when the standard interface or update path is not usable.
- Confirm that the PS5 is off, not merely in Rest Mode.
- Hold the power button for three seconds to turn it off if necessary.
- Press and hold the power button once more.
- Release it after the second beep, approximately seven seconds after the first beep.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button.
The Safe Mode menu includes options to restart the PS5, change video output, repair storage, update system software, restore default settings, clear cache or rebuild the database, reset the console, and reinstall system software. The exact options shown can vary with the console’s condition. Read each description before selecting it: some choices alter settings, while reset and reinstallation choices can erase user data.

Which PS5 update method should I choose?
Choose the least invasive method that matches the console’s condition. The table separates the practical decision points.
| Method | Can the PS5 reach Home? | Internet needed? | Extra equipment | Typical data-loss risk | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Online update | Yes | Yes | None beyond the console and controller | Low when power is stable and installation is not interrupted | Normal updates and the first choice for most consoles |
| Retry from Downloads/Uploads | Usually yes | Yes | None | Low; it retries the transfer rather than resetting the console | A download that is stalled or reports an error once |
| Safe Mode USB update | Not necessarily | No connection on the PS5 is required for the file transfer | FAT32/exFAT USB drive, PC or Mac, official update file, USB controller cable | Lower than a reset if you select only the update option, but follow the prompts carefully | Repeated online failures or an inaccessible normal menu |
| Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) | Not necessarily | No for the local file, although a computer is needed to obtain it | USB drive, computer, controller cable, backup of important data | Highest: all user data is deleted and system software is removed | Last-resort troubleshooting after backup and support guidance |
USB updating is not a shortcut for a healthy console with a working connection; it adds file-system and naming requirements. Conversely, a reset is not a stronger version of an ordinary update. It is a factory-reset operation with a fundamentally different data-loss consequence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the main causes of a failed PS5 update?
Failure messages do not all indicate the same problem. Use the symptom to decide what to try next.
The download stops or repeatedly returns an error
Retry once from Downloads/Uploads > View Error Info > Try Again. If the error returns, check the network connection and move to the official USB procedure instead of repeatedly restarting the transfer.
The console cannot reach the update menu
Use Safe Mode. A console that cannot load the Home screen cannot use the ordinary online menu, so the USB update option is the appropriate recovery route.
Safe Mode says it cannot find the update file
On the computer, confirm the drive is FAT32 or exFAT, that there is approximately 1.1 GB of free space, and that the path is exactly PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP. Check capitalization, spelling, and file extensions. A common mistake is allowing the computer to save a second extension, producing a filename such as PS5UPDATE.PUP.PUP.
The installation stops after it begins
Do not power-cycle the PS5 while it is installing unless Sony’s on-screen instructions specifically direct you to do so. Interrupting installation can damage the console. If it cannot complete after a normal restart and a correctly prepared official USB file, back up what you can and consult Sony’s repair or support guidance before selecting a reset.
The controller will not work in Safe Mode
Connect it with a USB data cable directly to the console and press the PS button after the Safe Mode screen appears. A cable that only supplies power may not carry the input signal required by Safe Mode; try another known-good cable if the first one fails.

When should I reinstall the PS5 system software?
Reinstallation should be the final troubleshooting step, not the next step after one failed download. Sony states that reinstalling the system software deletes all data on the PS5 and describes the operation as a factory reset.
Before considering it, complete the non-destructive sequence: check the installed version, attempt the online update, retry a stalled download, prepare the official USB update, and seek Sony support or repair guidance if the manual update also fails. Make a backup of console data before entering the reinstall workflow. Confirm that you understand the difference between an update option and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) in Safe Mode; selecting the latter begins the destructive process.
After reinstallation, the console starts as if it has been returned to factory condition. You will need to complete initial setup again, sign in, reinstall games and applications, and restore backed-up data where available. Because the operation removes the existing system software as well as user data, it is not an appropriate way to gain a minor version change on a functioning console.
How can I verify that the update succeeded?
Wait until the PS5 has finished restarting and displays the normal Home screen. Then open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information and read the installed version.
- If the expected version is displayed and the console operates normally, the update completed.
- If the screen still reports an older version, return to System Software Update and Settings and check again.
- If the console repeatedly returns to Safe Mode, cannot complete the same official file, or shows a new error after installation, stop experimenting with destructive options and contact Sony support or repair services.
Verification matters because a downloaded file is not the same as an installed release. The version shown in Console Information is the reliable confirmation that the operating software on the console changed.
What is the safest decision path for a PS5 update problem?
Follow this order so each step preserves as much data and functionality as possible.
- Check the current version in Console Information.
- If Update Available appears, use the online update menu with stable power and internet access.
- If the transfer stalls, open Downloads/Uploads, view the error, and choose Try Again.
- If online updating fails repeatedly, prepare the official
PS5UPDATE.PUPfile on a FAT32 or exFAT USB drive and run Update from USB Storage Device in Safe Mode. - If the manual update also fails, back up data and consult Sony’s support or repair guidance.
- Use Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) only when support guidance and your backup make the data loss acceptable.
This sequence starts with the path that requires no accessories and carries the least disruption, then escalates only when the console’s symptoms justify it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a normal PS5 system-software update delete my games or save files?
A standard online or USB update is intended to update the operating software rather than erase your library or saves. Data loss is associated with reset and reinstallation choices, so read the Safe Mode option name carefully and keep a backup before advanced troubleshooting.
Can I leave my PS5 in Rest Mode while an update downloads?
Yes. Sony recommends keeping the console connected to the internet in Rest Mode with automatic downloads and updates enabled for unattended updating. Rest Mode does not protect against a power cut, so use dependable power and avoid updating during known electrical instability.
Why does my PS5 say it is up to date when another console has a different version?
Availability can vary by region, hardware model, or rollout timing. The status on your own Console Information screen is the relevant result for that console; do not install an unverified package simply to match another system.
Do I need a USB drive for every PS5 update?
No. A USB drive is unnecessary for a normal online update when the console reaches Home and can download the release. FAT32 or exFAT media is mainly a recovery option for repeated download failures or an inaccessible standard update menu.
