To check your portfolio’s exposure to AI stocks, look through every fund to its underlying companies, apply one clearly stated definition of “AI stock,” and add each company’s indirect fund exposure to any shares you own directly. A fund’s name or broad technology label is not enough: two funds marketed around AI can hold very different companies, and several funds can own the same large stock.
The result is an estimate tied to a specific holdings date and classification rule—not a permanent or universal measure of “AI exposure.” The steps below show how to calculate it, identify overlap, and interpret the concentration you find.

What does portfolio exposure to AI stocks mean?
AI exposure is the share of your portfolio’s value attributable to companies you classify as connected to artificial intelligence. It can include shares you own directly and shares held inside ETFs or mutual funds. Those are different routes to owning the same underlying company, so counting only direct shares—or simply adding a fund’s entire value because its name mentions AI—can give a misleading result.
There is no single accepted list of AI stocks. A company might sell chips used to train AI systems, operate cloud infrastructure, develop AI software, or use AI in a wider business without deriving much of its revenue from it. Your answer therefore depends on both the funds’ actual holdings and the rule you choose to classify companies.

Morningstar’s comparison of the largest US and European AI funds found only three holdings in common among their respective top 10 as of March 31, 2025. That difference is a practical reason to inspect holdings rather than assume the label “AI fund” means the same thing everywhere.
What do you need before calculating your exposure?
Gather a complete snapshot of your investments before doing any calculations. The portfolio total and each holding’s value should refer to the same date, or you should clearly record when they differ.
- Account coverage: Include taxable, retirement, and other investment accounts if you want a whole-portfolio figure.
- Position details: Record each security’s ticker, vehicle type, market value, and holdings date. Vehicle type matters because an individual stock can be classified directly, while a fund needs a look-through calculation.
- Fund documents: For every ETF or mutual fund, obtain its latest holdings file, prospectus, and shareholder report. Investor.gov says most ETFs post portfolio holdings on their websites daily and advises investors to inspect actual holdings and fund documents.
- A classification rule: Decide what qualifies as AI exposure before adding up positions. Record the rule so someone reviewing the result can understand what it includes.
- Accounting choices: Decide how cash, derivatives, short positions, and any fund holdings you cannot classify will be treated. State these choices alongside the total.
Holdings can change after the date shown in a file. Label the calculation with both the date you performed it and the date of the holdings data used; do not present a snapshot as a current, unchanging allocation.
How should you define an AI stock?
Choose a rule that matches the question you want to answer. A narrow definition measures companies whose businesses are substantially tied to AI; a broader one captures more of the ecosystem but may include companies with only partial or indirect links.

Use an established index classification
If an AI-related index publishes its methodology, you can use that classification as your rule. Morningstar’s index methodology considers a company’s current companywide revenue, projected revenue over five years, the probability of a material increase in net profit, and its role in the supply chain. Such a framework makes clear that the classification is not based on a company name or a single product announcement alone.
Record the specific index or methodology and the date of the version you use. A classification can change as a company’s business or the index provider’s criteria change.

You can instead define categories yourself—for example, companies materially involved in chips, cloud and data centers, AI software, applications, or automation—and require evidence of meaningful AI-related business activity. Be consistent about what “meaningful” means. A company that supplies general-purpose infrastructure may qualify under a broad value-chain rule but not under a rule limited to businesses with substantial AI revenue.
Do not label a company an AI stock without identifying the rule that puts it on your list. If you want to compare two portfolios, use the same rule for both; otherwise, differences in the results may reflect classification choices rather than investment differences.

How do you calculate direct and fund-based exposure?
First calculate each position’s portfolio weight, then calculate the portion of each fund attributable to companies that meet your AI rule. Add direct and fund-based exposure company by company.
- Set the portfolio denominator. Add the market value of the positions included in your analysis. State whether the total includes cash, and apply that choice consistently.
- Calculate each position weight. Divide the position’s market value by the portfolio’s total market value. For example, a position worth $5,000 in a $100,000 portfolio represents 5% of that portfolio. This is an arithmetic illustration, not a market quote.
- Find each fund’s underlying company weights. Use the fund’s holdings data and note its reporting date. Do not treat the fund’s own market value as if it were all invested in AI companies.
- Multiply through the fund. Multiply the fund’s portfolio weight by the underlying company’s weight inside that fund. If a fund is 10% of your portfolio and one qualifying company is 4% of that fund, that holding contributes 0.4% of your portfolio to that company’s exposure.
- Add any direct position in the same company. Combine the direct portfolio weight with the contribution from each fund that holds the company. Label the result as combined exposure, not as an additional fund allocation.
- Sum qualifying companies. Add the company-level combined exposures that meet your rule to obtain the portfolio’s total AI exposure under that definition.
For example, if you own a qualifying stock directly and also hold it through two funds, the company’s combined exposure is the direct weight plus its look-through contribution from each fund. This avoids both overlooking indirect ownership and counting a fund’s full value as AI exposure when only a portion of it is invested in qualifying companies.
How can you find overlap and concentration?
Build a company-level view across all funds and direct positions. The same company can appear in multiple funds, so a list of fund names or fund-level percentages does not reveal your total exposure to that company.
Investor.gov specifically advises looking through an index fund to its actual holdings because different indexes may include the same securities or assign them unexpected weights. In practice, a fund that tracks a broad index can add exposure to a large AI-related company even if the fund is not marketed as an AI fund.

After adding exposures by company, group holdings by value-chain role—such as chips, cloud and data centers, software, applications, and automation. This shows whether an apparently diversified set of funds is concentrated in one segment or in a few large companies.
That concentration can be substantial in AI-oriented portfolios. Morningstar reported that almost nine out of every 10 AI and big-data funds held Nvidia in 2025. Separately, the European Securities and Markets Authority reported in 2025 that more than 50% of EU fund market value invested in AI companies was concentrated in the largest companies, including six of the Magnificent Seven, as of June 2024. These figures describe the cited fund universes and dates; they are not estimates of any individual investor’s portfolio.

How should you compare two funds or portfolios?
Use the same AI definition, calculation date, and portfolio denominator for each comparison. A side-by-side view is more useful when it separates exposure amount from exposure quality and concentration.
| Comparison | What to examine |
|---|---|
| Direct versus look-through weight | How much comes from individual shares and how much comes indirectly through funds. |
| Largest constituents | How much of the qualifying exposure rests in the largest companies. |
| Overlap | Which companies recur across funds and how much combined portfolio exposure each creates. |
| AI definition and purity | Which classification rule is used and whether it captures substantial AI businesses or a broader technology value chain. |
| Data date and reporting frequency | When the holdings were reported and how frequently the fund publishes them. |
| Fees, liquidity, and geography | What the fund documents establish about costs, trading, and regional exposure. |
A broad technology allocation is not automatically a high-purity AI allocation. The fund’s holdings and your classification rule determine what portion counts. When comparing funds, examine their prospectuses and shareholder reports for details that a holdings list alone may not explain.

How should you handle cash, derivatives, and short positions?
There is no single portfolio-weight convention that fits every analysis, so disclose your choices rather than silently mixing methods. For a simple holdings-based estimate, you might include cash in the total portfolio denominator while assigning cash no AI-company exposure; excluding cash instead will produce a different percentage. Keep the treatment consistent across accounts and comparisons.
Derivatives and short positions can make a market-value-only calculation incomplete. A derivative may create economic exposure that is not represented by the amount of cash or collateral recorded as its market value, while a short position can offset exposure rather than add to it. The fund’s reporting and your chosen calculation method need to support any adjustment. If you cannot confidently translate a position into company-level exposure, list it separately and explain that it is excluded or not quantified instead of assigning it a guessed weight.

- Counting fund names instead of holdings: A product’s label does not tell you how much of its portfolio meets your AI rule.
- Adding fund values without looking through: A fund can contain both qualifying companies and unrelated holdings; counting its full value overstates AI exposure.
- Ignoring repeated holdings: The same company can appear in a direct position and several funds. Add the company’s calculated contributions, not the fund totals.
- Using inconsistent dates: Combining portfolio values and fund holdings from different dates can make the result hard to interpret. Show the dates used.
- Changing the definition mid-calculation: Applying a broad rule to some holdings and a narrow one to others makes the final percentage incoherent.
- Confusing technology with AI: A broad technology holding is not necessarily a high-purity AI holding. Count it only if it qualifies under the rule you stated.
- Hiding exclusions: If you lack sufficient detail for a holding, make that limitation visible instead of implying that the total covers everything.
What should you do with the number?
Treat the result as a risk-mapping tool, not a recommendation to buy or sell. Compare company-level and value-chain concentration with the limits you have set for yourself, then decide whether the measured exposure is consistent with your investment plan. A total percentage can look moderate while a large share of it rests on one company or one segment.
Keep the calculation’s AI rule, account coverage, data dates, denominator, and treatment of cash or other complex holdings with the result. Recalculate when your positions or the funds’ reported holdings change; otherwise, an old percentage can create a false sense of precision.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an ETF’s name tell me how much of it is invested in AI?
No. A name is not a substitute for the holdings and classification rule used in your calculation. A broad fund may contain AI-related companies, while an AI-labeled fund can include a range of businesses with different degrees of connection to AI.
What if a fund shows only its top holdings?
A partial list cannot establish the fund’s complete look-through exposure. Check the fund’s holdings file and shareholder report for fuller detail; if you still cannot obtain enough information, identify the unquantified portion rather than treating it as zero.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I count a company that uses AI but does not sell AI products?
That depends on the question your rule is designed to answer. A supply-chain or broad business-role definition may include it, while a revenue-focused definition may not; document the choice so your result is interpretable.
