To check whether Minecraft is up to date, first identify its edition and where it was installed. In Java Edition, inspect the selected release in Minecraft Launcher and choose Latest Release if needed. Bedrock Edition updates through the store or console that installed it; automatic updates are controlled by that platform, not by one universal Minecraft setting.
The steps below reflect Minecraft and Microsoft’s documented instructions as of October 25, 2026. Menu names and availability can vary by device or software version, so use the device’s current update controls if a label has changed.

How can I tell which Minecraft edition and installation I have?
Start by identifying the edition and the place that manages its updates. That determines both where to look for an update and which automatic-update control applies. Successfully opening the game is not, by itself, proof that you launched the latest release: Java Launcher can have an older installation selected.
- Java Edition on PC or Mac: Check Minecraft Launcher. The selected installation or release appears near the Play control.
- Bedrock on Windows: Check Microsoft Store, particularly if that is where the game was installed. Its Library can check installed apps and games for updates.
- Mobile: Find Minecraft in the App Store or Google Play, depending on the device and the source of the installation.
- Console or Fire TV: Use the update or store controls for that device. The routes differ between platforms.
If you are unsure, open the same place you normally use to install or launch Minecraft and look for the game there. Do not apply Microsoft Store instructions just because you are on a Windows computer: first confirm that the Windows installation is managed through that store. Some publishers manage updates in their own apps.

There is no single version number that can be safely presented here as the latest for every player. Java and Bedrock have distinct update paths, and release availability can vary by edition or platform. Compare the version or update status shown by your own launcher, store, or console with Minecraft’s current release information rather than relying on an old number in a guide.
How do I check and update Java Edition on PC or Mac?
Open Minecraft Launcher and check which release is selected by the Play control. Minecraft says the launcher should show the latest release automatically; if it does not, select Latest Release from the arrow beside Play.
- Open Minecraft Launcher.
- Inspect the selected installation or release near Play.
- If the selection is not Latest Release, open the arrow beside Play.
- Select Latest Release, then use that selection to launch the game.
The selection matters. A launcher can be set to an older installation, so launching Minecraft without checking the selected release only confirms that the selected installation opens; it does not confirm that the selection is the latest one. If you intentionally use a different installation, check it before changing anything: the documented route for selecting the newest release is to choose Latest Release.
The launcher route above is Minecraft’s currently documented instruction, not a guarantee that every launcher layout looks identical. If the arrow or label is in a different place, look for the installation or version selector associated with Play. Minecraft Help also lists a separate manual-update article for Java Edition. Exact release numbers change, so use the launcher’s current latest-release entry rather than treating a number from an older article as current.
How do I update Bedrock on Windows?
For a Windows installation managed by Microsoft Store, open the Store’s Library and choose Get updates. That checks installed apps and games, including Minecraft when it is managed through the Store.

- Choose Library.
- Select Get updates.
- If Minecraft has an update available, use the Store’s displayed update control and wait for it to finish before launching the game again.
To turn on automatic app updates in Microsoft Store, open Profile > Store Settings and enable App updates. Microsoft’s instructions describe this as a Store-level control for app updates; it is not a Minecraft-only switch. Some publishers manage updates through their own apps, so this setting may not govern every installation source.
If the Store does not show an update, do not assume the game is broken or that a newer version is available for your installation. Check that you are viewing the right Library and that Store updates are not paused. Microsoft notes that Store updates can be paused; use the Store’s current controls to check their status. If Minecraft was installed or is managed elsewhere, follow that source’s update route instead.
How do I update Minecraft on a phone or tablet?
Search for Minecraft in the app store that manages the installed copy: the App Store or Google Play. Minecraft’s instructions say an owner should see an update prompt when the installed copy is not current; if the store shows Open, Minecraft says the latest version is installed.
- Open the relevant app store on the device.
- Search for Minecraft and open its store listing.
- If an update is offered, use the store’s update control. If the listing shows Open, Minecraft’s guidance treats the installed version as current.
For automatic updates, check the device’s app-store settings. Minecraft’s cited instructions point players to the stores but do not document the current settings screens for every iOS or Android version. The exact location and wording can therefore depend on the device and operating-system version; use the store’s own current settings rather than expecting a Minecraft setting to control updates.
If you use more than one device, check the store account and installation on the device you intend to play on. A store listing on one device does not establish the update status of an installation managed by another store or platform.

How do I update Minecraft on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, or Fire TV?
Use the update controls for the specific device. Minecraft’s official instructions document different routes for Xbox, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Fire TV; they should not be treated as interchangeable menus or generalized to every generation of a console.
Xbox
Minecraft documents this route: My Apps & Games > Minecraft > more options > Manage game & add-ons > Updates. If the game’s Updates screen lists no update, Minecraft says the game is fully updated.
- Open My Apps & Games and select Minecraft.
- Open the game’s more-options menu.
- Choose Manage game & add-ons, then Updates.
- Install an update if one is listed. If none is listed, Minecraft’s guidance is that the game is fully updated.
PlayStation 4
Minecraft says the game should update automatically when console auto-updates are configured. To check manually, select Minecraft, open Options, and choose Check for Update.

This documented automatic-update statement is for the PS4 instructions. Do not assume the same menu labels or behavior apply to another PlayStation generation; use that console’s own current software controls if you are on a different model.

Minecraft’s guide includes a legacy Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition migration flow and an eShop route. Because that guidance depends on edition context and may not match every current Switch menu, use the console’s own software-update controls when the labels differ. In particular, do not assume that instructions referring to the legacy edition describe the update path for every current Nintendo Switch installation. Check the game’s displayed edition and follow the current controls on the console if the documented route does not match what you see.
Fire TV
Minecraft documents a store-based route: open the Store, find Minecraft, and download the update. Then use the highlighted game’s More Info page and its Update control. If the Fire TV menus have changed, follow the current store controls shown on the device.

For Java, the documented guidance is that Launcher should show the latest release automatically; if it does not, select that release. For mobile, the Minecraft instructions direct players to the app store and say it will prompt an owner if an update is needed. These are not proof of a universal schedule or a promise that every platform installs an update immediately without any user action.
Automatic-update settings can be broader than Minecraft. Microsoft Store’s App updates setting applies at the Store level, not solely to this game. Console and mobile controls likewise belong to their platform. Check which source owns the installation before enabling a setting or troubleshooting an update.

- Mobile store shows Open: Minecraft says the latest version is installed according to that listing.
- Console labels do not match the guide: The documented paths are platform- and version-specific. Use the current controls on the device, especially on a PlayStation generation other than PS4 or a Switch installation that does not match the legacy edition flow.
Also distinguish “no update is listed” from “the update failed.” The official instructions establish how to check for an available update, but do not provide one universal diagnosis for download errors. If the platform does show an update but cannot complete it, use that platform’s own current error message and update controls to determine the next step; the steps differ by store and device.
How can I verify that I am using the latest available release?
