Yes, a VPN can charge more when the first term ends. Promotional pricing usually applies only to the introductory term; the next charge may use a higher standard rate and can change again after notice. To verify your own account, compare the amount and terms on your original checkout receipt with the upcoming charge shown in the provider’s billing area or latest renewal email. Match the currency, taxes, plan tier, device allowance and term length before calculating the difference. If the renewal is unacceptable, disable auto-renewal through the same channel that billed you—usually the provider’s website, Apple’s App Store or Google Play—and keep the cancellation confirmation.
What is the difference between an introductory VPN price and a renewal price?
The introductory price is the amount offered for the first subscription term. The renewal price is the amount the provider intends to charge for the next term when automatic renewal runs. They may differ because an introductory promotion expires, a provider changes its standard rates, taxes are recalculated, or you move to a different plan.

- Introductory term: the first paid period covered by your original order.
- Renewal term: the subsequent period scheduled to bill automatically unless you cancel.
- Renewal total: the full amount scheduled for the next term, including any tax shown by the provider.
- Effective monthly cost: a comparison measure created by dividing a term total by its number of months; it is not always the amount charged each month.
How do I find the exact introductory price I paid?
Use records created when you subscribed, rather than relying on memory or the current public price. Collect the original offer page if you saved it, the checkout confirmation, the payment receipt and the first order email. Kaspersky says its introductory price appears on the offer page, shopping cart and email receipt; the same records are useful for other providers.
- Locate the order email. Search your inbox for the provider name, “receipt,” “subscription,” “invoice” or “order.” Open the message for the first purchase, not a later renewal notice.
- Open the invoice or receipt details. Record the amount charged, currency, tax or “tax included” wording, date and payment channel. If the message shows both a total and a monthly equivalent, preserve both but treat the total as the amount paid.
- Identify the term. Write down whether the first purchase covered one month, one year, two years or another period. A two-year total cannot be compared directly with a one-year renewal total.
- Record plan attributes. Note the plan name, number of simultaneous devices, feature tier and any add-ons. A renewal on a different tier is not a like-for-like price comparison.
- Check the checkout screen, if available. Some providers retain an order page or subscription ID. Save a PDF or screenshot showing the first-term amount and the disclosure beside the subscribe button.
- Write down the payment channel. A purchase made on the provider’s website is managed there; a purchase made through Apple or Google is managed through that store. The channel determines where you will later cancel or inspect billing.
If the receipt lists only a monthly equivalent, look for the billing frequency and multiply the equivalent by the number of months in the term. Do not silently treat a monthly equivalent as a recurring monthly debit when the provider actually collected the whole term upfront.

Where can I see the VPN renewal price and date?
Sign in to the account that owns the subscription and open a page labeled Subscription, Billing, Manage plan, Renewal or a similar heading. Providers use different labels, but the useful fields are the next charge, renewal date, billing interval and subscription term. Read the most recent renewal email as well; it may announce a price change that has not yet appeared on a public pricing page.

- Enter the billing section. Look for “upcoming payment,” “next payment,” “renews on,” “renews at” or “next invoice.” Expand details if the page initially shows only a monthly equivalent.
- Capture the complete renewal record. Save the amount, currency, tax treatment, renewal date, term length, plan tier and device limit. Record whether the amount is a one-time term total or a monthly charge.
- Read the latest notice. Search for a message about renewal, price changes or an upcoming charge. NordVPN says its renewal price can change and that customers are notified by email before renewal. That notice is more relevant to your account than an old promotion.
- Check auto-renewal status. Confirm whether the switch says on, enabled or active. A displayed renewal amount matters only if the subscription is still scheduled to renew through that billing channel.
ExpressVPN states that its checkout discloses the initial price, renewal price and renewal frequency immediately above the subscribe button, and that upcoming charges can be viewed under the subscription ID in the account. This illustrates why both the original checkout and the current account record should be retained.
How do I compare the two prices fairly?
Put the introductory and renewal records on the same basis before subtracting anything. The comparison should use the same currency, tax basis, duration, device count and plan tier. If one number is a total and the other is a monthly equivalent, convert one so both are either full-term totals or clearly labeled monthly equivalents.

For example, if a receipt shows a two-year introductory total and the account shows a one-year renewal total, divide the introductory total by 24 and the renewal total by 12 to compare monthly equivalents. Keep the original totals beside those calculations so another person can audit exactly what was compared.

Use totals for equal terms. If the terms differ, calculate an effective monthly cost first, then label the result as a monthly-equivalent comparison rather than claiming that the provider bills monthly.

Illustrative calculation
Suppose an introductory term cost $48 for 12 months and the comparable renewal term is $72 for 12 months. The difference is $24. The percentage increase is ($24 ÷ $48) × 100, or 50%. This is an arithmetic example, not a quoted price for any provider.
What if the currency or tax changed?
Do not hide a currency conversion or tax change inside the percentage. Record the original currencies and the conversion-rate date, or compare the provider’s own totals in the account currency. If the first receipt was tax-exclusive and the renewal screen is tax-inclusive, show both bases or remove tax from one figure only when the invoice provides enough information to do so accurately.
What if the plan changed too?
Separate a price increase from an entitlement change. A renewal that adds devices or features may cost more for a legitimate reason; a cheaper renewal may remove benefits. Compare the plan name, feature list and device limit before describing the result as a higher renewal price.
Can the renewal price change after I subscribe?
Yes. Providers can revise the amount that applies at renewal, usually subject to advance notice and the terms shown for your account. The Federal Trade Commission warns that an automatic renewal can cost more than the earlier promotional rate. Kaspersky’s renewal language likewise says the renewal price may differ from the introductory price and is subject to change.
NordVPN states that the renewal price is subject to change and that customers will be notified by email before renewal. ExpressVPN says the initial and renewal prices and the renewal frequency are disclosed at checkout. These statements do not create one universal notice period for every provider; the latest account-specific notice and subscription terms control.
McAfee’s legal terms make the distinction explicit: the amount charged upon purchase is the price of the first term. That wording is a reminder to treat the first receipt as a historical charge, not a promise that later terms will cost the same.

How do I stop a VPN from renewing at the higher price?
Cancel auto-renewal before the deadline shown in the account or notice. The correct path depends on where you bought the subscription. Deleting the VPN application does not cancel a store subscription; Mozilla specifically warns that an app-store subscription must be canceled in the store account.

Website purchase
- Sign in to the provider’s website with the subscription account.
- Open Subscription, Billing, Manage plan or the equivalent page.
- Select Cancel auto-renewal, Turn off renewal or the matching control.
- Follow every confirmation screen. Some services ask for a reason or offer a retention discount; do not assume the process is complete until a final confirmation appears.
- Save the confirmation email, reference number or screenshot showing the effective cancellation date.
Apple App Store purchase
- Open the Apple device’s Settings and select your Apple Account name.
- Choose Subscriptions, select the VPN and tap Cancel Subscription or the equivalent option.
- Confirm the cancellation and save the screen showing the expiration date.
Google Play purchase
- Open Google Play while signed in to the Google account that paid.
- Open the profile menu, choose Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- Select the VPN, choose Cancel subscription and complete the prompts.
- Keep the confirmation and verify that the subscription no longer shows an upcoming charge.
Cancellation normally stops the next automatic charge while leaving access available until the paid term ends, but the exact access and refund rules are provider-specific. Check the confirmation for the date service ends and any separate refund instructions.
What should I do if the account and receipt show different amounts?
First determine whether the difference is a display convention rather than a billing error. A receipt may show a pre-tax total while the account includes tax, or one screen may show a monthly equivalent while another shows the full term. Compare the invoice line items and currency before contacting support.
- Different term: verify whether the account changed from annual to monthly or vice versa.
- Different plan: check for an upgrade, add-on, extra device allowance or bundle.
- Different currency: confirm the country or payment profile attached to the subscription.
- Different tax: look for a tax line, changed billing address or a newly applicable rate.
- Different account: match the subscription ID and payment email; households often have more than one login.
- Price-change notice: locate the email explaining when the new amount takes effect.
If the amount still cannot be reconciled, contact the provider before the renewal date with the order number, screenshots and the exact figures. Ask for a written explanation of the renewal total and whether auto-renewal can be disabled. Do not send full card numbers; use only the payment details the provider requests through its secure support channel.
How much warning should I expect before renewal?
There is no single warning interval that applies to every VPN or country. Your provider’s terms and the latest notice determine the timing. TunnelBear’s policy revised December 5, 2025, for example, lists full prices of $10.99 monthly and $69.99 annually and says annual subscribers receive a reminder 30 days before billing. Those figures and that reminder are a dated policy example, not a universal or permanent VPN standard.

What information should I save for an auditable price check?
A small record prevents disputes and makes future renewals easy to review. Save the following in one note or folder:
- Original checkout date and receipt.
- Introductory total, currency and tax treatment.
- First-term length, plan tier and device allowance.
- Renewal total, currency, tax treatment and scheduled date.
- Renewal term, plan tier and device allowance.
- Latest renewal or price-change email.
- Auto-renewal status and the date you checked it.
- Cancellation confirmation, if you turned renewal off.
Use a worksheet like this, replacing the example labels with your account data:

Is a higher renewal price always a reason to cancel?
Not necessarily. Decide after comparing the normalized cost with the features and term you actually need. A higher total may still be acceptable if the renewal keeps a larger device allowance or a plan feature you use; conversely, a modest increase may not be worthwhile if you rarely use the service.
Keep the renewal when
- The plan still fits your device and feature requirements.
- The effective cost is acceptable compared with alternatives you have evaluated independently.
- You value uninterrupted access and the renewal date is close.
- The account clearly shows the amount, term and cancellation conditions.
Turn off renewal when
- The amount is materially above your budget or the original promotion.
- You no longer need the service or have changed plans.
- The renewal record is unclear and support cannot explain it before billing.
- The plan’s devices, features or term no longer match your use.
You can usually make this decision without deleting the app. Turning off auto-renewal preserves the remaining paid period in many services, while deleting an app alone does not stop billing.
What is the safest final check before the charge?
Within a few days of the scheduled date, reopen the account and read the latest notice rather than relying on an earlier screenshot. Confirm the amount, currency, tax, term, plan and auto-renewal switch. If you canceled, verify that the account shows an expiration date instead of a next-charge date, then watch the next card statement as the Federal Trade Commission advises.
The controlling evidence is your own checkout record, receipt, account renewal screen and latest notice. Public promotional pages can change; those account records show what your subscription is actually set to do.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a VPN charge a different amount if my card expires or is replaced?
A failed or replaced payment method does not by itself establish a new price. The provider may retry the same scheduled amount or ask you to update billing details; check the subscription screen and any payment email before updating the card.
What happens if I notice the higher renewal charge only after it posts?
Save the receipt, renewal notice and account details immediately, then contact the provider through its billing support channel and ask about its cancellation or refund terms. Also check whether the charge came from the provider, Apple or Google, because the seller that processed the payment controls the applicable request path.
Does canceling auto-renewal remove my VPN account immediately?
Usually, cancellation changes the next-billing status rather than deleting the account, and access may continue through the paid term. The confirmation screen or email should state the service end date; follow that record instead of uninstalling the app.
Can I switch from a yearly renewal to monthly billing before the charge?
Only if the provider offers that change for your account. Look for a plan-change option and read the effective date, because switching tiers or intervals can create a new term and may not preserve the original promotional conditions.
Why is the amount on my bank statement different from the VPN invoice?
Your bank may display a converted currency, a pending authorization or a separate tax line. Compare the finalized invoice and settled transaction, and ask the payment processor or provider for clarification if the discrepancy remains after settlement.
