To determine whether a VeloCloud Orchestrator (VCO) is vulnerable, first establish whether it is an on-premises deployment, record its complete release and build, and compare that value with every affected-version list in Arista’s applicable security advisories. The latest located notice, Security Advisory 0199 (22 October 2026), addresses a critical SQL-injection flaw, but two earlier actively exploited issues can still affect older release trains. A version match means you should treat the system as affected until it is upgraded, restrict access to trusted administration networks, investigate for compromise, and complete credential and device checks where evidence warrants.
What does “exposed” mean for a VCO?
Exposure has two separate parts: whether the installed software falls within an advisory’s affected range, and whether an attacker can reach the vulnerable function. A VCO can be vulnerable even when it is not reachable from the public internet; an attacker who can access its web interface from another untrusted network may still have a path. Conversely, a deployment can have a vulnerable version but a smaller practical attack surface after strict network controls are applied. Network controls reduce opportunity, but they do not replace upgrading.

These checks concern VCO on-premises releases. Hosted and Dedicated services can have different patching responsibilities and are identified separately in the advisories. Do not infer safety from a hardware model, an Edge version, or a major-version label such as “6.x.” The complete VCO release and build are required.
Which VCO versions are listed in the current advisories?
The following table consolidates the three Arista advisories that matter when checking current exposure. “Before” means every build lower than the stated fixed build; “and below” includes the stated build itself.

For CVE-2026-114625, Arista states that Hosted and Dedicated versions were already patched; the affected-platform list identifies VCO on-premises. For CVE-2026-93952, Advisory 0183 likewise says Hosted and Dedicated versions had already been patched. Confirm your service type before applying an on-premises version comparison.
How do I identify the exact VCO deployment and build?
Start by documenting the deployment type, then obtain the full release string from the VCO administrative interface or your organization’s approved maintenance procedure. Arista’s advisories do not publish one universal menu path or CLI command that works for every VCO build, so use the procedure supported by your edition and change-control process.

- Classify the service. Record “on-premises,” “Hosted,” or “Dedicated,” along with the site or tenant identifier. Do not treat a managed service as an on-premises appliance merely because your team administers its settings.
- Capture the complete version. Record every component of the release and build, including all patch digits. A value such as
6.4cannot be compared reliably with a threshold that includes6.4.2.12. - Preserve evidence. Save a read-only screenshot or export, the date and time, and the administrator who collected it. Also record whether the value came from the active node, a standby node, or a management view that aggregates nodes.
- Check consistency. If the platform is clustered or has multiple VCO instances, collect the value from each instance. A single unpatched node can leave the management environment exposed.
If you cannot obtain a complete build, handle the system conservatively: restrict access, open a support case through your normal Arista channel, and do not declare it safe from a partial version label.
How do I compare my build with each advisory?
Perform the comparison independently for each CVE. A release that is newer than one advisory’s threshold can still be inside another advisory’s affected range.

- Begin with Advisory 0199. Compare the major and maintenance train first, then compare every patch component with that train’s fixed build. “Before” is a strict less-than comparison, so the fixed build itself is not in the affected range for that advisory.
- Check Advisory 0183 next. Its wording uses “and below,” which includes the listed lower boundary. Apply the comparison to the 5.2, 6.1, 6.4, and 7.0 trains named in the table.
- Check Advisory 0144. This notice uses “before” fixed releases. Compare each train separately; do not assume that a patch level in one train maps numerically to another.
- Mark the result per CVE. Use “affected,” “not listed,” or “cannot determine.” Arista states in Advisory 0183 that if a software release is not listed, the deployment is not vulnerable to that advisory regardless of the hardware platform. That statement applies to the listed issue, not to every future or unrelated vulnerability.
- Escalate ambiguity. If your build string has an unexpected suffix, a vendor customization, or a train not shown in an advisory, obtain an authoritative interpretation before closing the review.
Keep the advisory date and the comparison result in your change or vulnerability record. Advisories can be updated, and a later notice may introduce a different affected range.
Is my on-premises VCO reachable from an untrusted network?
Map the actual path to the VCO web interface rather than relying on an assumption such as “it is behind the firewall.” Determine which source networks can resolve, route to, and complete a connection to the interface, including remote-access gateways and management VPNs.
Questions to answer
- Does a public address, port-forward, reverse proxy, load balancer, or cloud security rule expose the interface?
- Can user, partner, monitoring, or remote-support networks reach it, and are those networks considered trusted for VCO administration?
- Are firewall rules limited to required management addresses, or do they allow broad internet ranges?
- Does the interface listen on more than one address or node, including a standby or maintenance interface?
- Are access-control lists enforced before the request reaches VCO, and are denied requests logged?
For CVE-2026-93952 specifically, successful exploitation requires network access to the VCO web interface and certificate-based Edge-to-VCO authentication. The advisory says VCO tenant or operator credentials are not required. Therefore, verify both the network path and whether that certificate-based configuration is enabled; do not use the absence of password credentials as a reason to dismiss the risk.
What interim protections should I apply before upgrading?
Use layered controls while arranging the fixed release. These measures lower exposure but are temporary because they do not remove vulnerable code.

- Permit the VCO web interface only from trusted administrative networks, using explicit allowlists at the firewall, reverse proxy, or equivalent control point.
- Remove unnecessary public routes, port forwards, and broad remote-access rules. Confirm that emergency access paths are not silently restoring internet reachability.
- Limit unnecessary outbound ports from the VCO host or segment. Unexpected outbound HTTP or HTTPS is particularly important to investigate.
- Increase monitoring for authentication anomalies, unusual request paths, encoded parameters, privileged changes, command execution, and newly created files or archives.
- Notify the teams responsible for Edge certificates, identity, firewalls, and incident response so that configuration changes are coordinated and recorded.
Do not make an untested production firewall change that could strand all administrators. Use a documented change, retain a break-glass path restricted to trusted personnel, and verify the rule from an allowed and a denied source.
How should I look for signs of compromise?
Prioritize evidence that an attacker reached the web layer, obtained elevated control, executed commands, or moved data out of the environment. The absence of an obvious error message is not evidence that exploitation did not occur.

- Web and reverse-proxy logs: Look for unusual paths, encoded or oversized parameters, repeated failures followed by success, unfamiliar source addresses, and access at times that do not fit administrative activity.
- Backend application logs: Check for unexpected tenant or operator changes, administrative actions without a matching change ticket, errors around database queries, and requests from unfamiliar service identities.
- System logs: Search for new processes, command execution, privilege changes, service restarts, altered scheduled tasks, and files or archives created in temporary or application directories.
- Network telemetry: Identify new outbound destinations, unexpected HTTP or HTTPS sessions, unusual data volume, and connections that began soon after suspicious inbound requests.
- Data and secrets access: Check for database exports and reads of credentials, certificates, private keys, configuration backups, or other key material.
Preserve original logs with their timestamps and time-zone information before rotating or cleaning systems. Correlate VCO events with firewall, identity, Edge-management, and endpoint telemetry. If your logging is incomplete, record that limitation and treat the uncertainty as part of the incident decision.
What is the correct upgrade and response sequence?
Upgrade to the fixed release named by the relevant advisory, then validate the result and complete incident-response actions when indicated. The sequence below avoids erasing evidence or leaving another node unpatched.

- Open a change and incident record. Link the exact VCO build, affected CVE or CVEs, exposure findings, approvers, and rollback plan.
- Contain access. Apply the trusted-network restriction and outbound controls described above. Keep evidence collection running.
- Back up and verify recovery material. Use your approved VCO backup procedure, confirm where backups are stored, and ensure they are protected from unauthorized access.
- Stage the upgrade. Confirm release compatibility, maintenance requirements, cluster order, and the fixed build for every affected train. Obtain the package and integrity information through your authorized Arista support or software-delivery channel.
- Patch every relevant instance. Include active, standby, disaster-recovery, and maintenance nodes. Record the resulting complete build on each one.
- Validate operation. Confirm administrator access, Edge connectivity, certificate-based functions, alarms, configuration synchronization, and normal monitoring. Recheck that the web interface is not publicly reachable.
- Investigate before deleting. Preserve suspicious logs, processes, files, and network indicators. Do not rebuild or rotate away evidence until your incident process permits it.
- Perform post-remediation actions. When compromise is suspected, rotate credentials, review administrator activity, validate managed Edge state, and consider restoration or replacement from trusted sources. Contact Arista TAC for assistance.
What should I do if the version is affected but there is no evidence of attack?
Patch promptly and retain the exposure assessment. “No evidence found” means that your review did not identify evidence in the available telemetry; it does not prove that no exploitation occurred, especially when logs were not enabled or have already rotated.
Document the version comparison, reachable networks, authentication configuration, log sources reviewed, review period, and the person who approved closure. Continue heightened monitoring after the upgrade for indicators whose activity may have started before remediation.

How do I handle a Hosted or Dedicated VCO?
Do not apply on-premises patch instructions or infer a customer-managed upgrade obligation without confirming the service model. The advisories identify Hosted and Dedicated versions as already patched for the issues noted above. Verify your service designation with the provider or contract owner, retain the provider’s confirmation, and still review your own network integrations, credentials, and administrative activity.
A managed service’s patch status does not automatically secure an exposed management path, compromised administrator account, or stolen certificate in your environment. Those surrounding controls remain your responsibility to assess.
Best Value
What mistakes cause teams to miss VCO exposure?
- Checking only the major version: Patch thresholds are release-specific, so “5.2” or “6.4” is insufficient.
- Checking only the newest advisory: Earlier actively exploited vulnerabilities can have different fixed builds and conditions.
- Confusing Edge and VCO versions: The affected software lists concern VCO releases; an up-to-date Edge does not prove that VCO is patched.
- Assuming a firewall equals remediation: Restriction reduces reachability but leaves the vulnerable software installed.
- Inspecting only one cluster node: A standby or recovery node can remain exploitable.
- Rotating credentials without investigation: Rotation can be necessary, but performed too early it may destroy useful evidence or overlook certificate and device changes.
- Declaring safety from a clean scan: A vulnerability scanner may not authenticate to the VCO interface or understand advisory-specific prerequisites.
What evidence should a completed exposure check contain?
A defensible record lets another administrator reproduce the conclusion without guessing. Include:
- Deployment type and every VCO instance or node reviewed.
- Complete version and build strings, collection method, timestamp, and screenshots or exports.
- Per-advisory comparison results for CVE-2026-114625, CVE-2026-93952, and CVE-2026-16812.
- Source networks that can reach the web interface, firewall or proxy rules, and whether certificate-based Edge-to-VCO authentication is configured.
- Interim controls, change approvals, upgrade results, and post-upgrade validation.
- Log sources and time range reviewed, findings, preserved indicators, and any unresolved evidence gaps.
- Credential, certificate, Edge-state, restoration, or Arista TAC actions taken after the upgrade.
Arista’s practical instruction is to check the software version against the “Affected Software” list first. Make that comparison the central decision point, then use reachability and configuration checks to determine urgency and incident scope.

Treat a deployment as affected whenever its exact on-premises build falls within any applicable advisory range, or whenever the build cannot be established. Restrict access immediately, investigate the relevant telemetry, and upgrade to the advisory’s fixed release. A deployment can be cleared for a specific CVE only after its release is outside that advisory’s affected list and the review has addressed reachable interfaces and available evidence.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a VCO be vulnerable if it has no public IP address?
Yes. Public exposure is not required if an untrusted partner, user, remote-access segment, or compromised internal host can reach the VCO web interface. Assess every routed and proxied path, not just internet-facing addresses.
Should I scan the VCO with a standard vulnerability scanner?
A scanner can provide useful network evidence, but it may not identify the exact VCO build or test advisory-specific prerequisites. Use the administrative build record and Arista affected-version lists as the authoritative version check, then use scanning as supporting evidence.
What if my VCO build string contains a suffix that is not in the advisory?
Do not assume the suffix makes the release safe or unsafe. Preserve the full string and obtain a written interpretation through your approved Arista support process, while keeping access restricted until the status is clear.
How long should heightened monitoring continue after patching?
Keep the period long enough to cover your normal log-retention and incident-review window, and extend it when telemetry was missing during the suspected exposure. Your incident-response lead should set the duration based on preserved indicators and local policy rather than a universal number.
