To check whether your software is affected by a newly disclosed flaw, identify the exact product, edition, version and build you run, then compare them with the vendor’s advisory—including any configuration or deployment conditions. A product name or CVE match alone does not prove that your installation is vulnerable. Check whether the flaw is being exploited, apply the vendor’s fix or mitigation if relevant, and verify the running system afterward.

What evidence tells you whether your software is affected?

You need to match the advisory’s conditions to the software that is actually deployed—not simply find the same product name or vulnerability identifier. The vendor advisory is the best starting point for affected versions, prerequisites, fixes and mitigations. NIST’s SP 800-216 says: “The advisory elements should contain sufficient information to enable the target audience to decide if the vulnerabilities are relevant and how to remediate them.”

For each potentially affected system, collect the details that determine whether the advisory applies:

  • Product and edition: Record the exact product name and edition, including whether it is a community, enterprise, cloud, or other variant if the vendor distinguishes them.
  • Version and build: Capture the full version and build number, not just a major release or a version shown in an old deployment record.
  • Deployment: Identify the host or service and how the software is deployed. Note the operating system or architecture if the advisory makes them relevant.
  • Configuration: Check whether a feature must be enabled, a particular configuration used, or another condition met for the flaw to apply.
  • Exposure: Record whether the affected service is reachable from the internet or otherwise exposed. Exposure helps inform urgency even when it does not determine whether the vulnerable code is present.

Keep the evidence tied to the system it describes. An inventory for a server group, for example, is not sufficient to establish the version running on every individual host if those hosts have different builds or configurations.

How do you check a new CVE step by step?

Use the vendor’s advisory to establish applicability, authoritative vulnerability records to add context, and an inventory of deployed software to make the match. Then remediate and verify the actual running system.

  1. Find the vendor advisory. Start with the software maker’s security advisory and note its CVE identifier, affected products and versions, conditions, fixed versions, mitigations, and any verification instructions. NIST guidance says an advisory should identify the product and version information, explain how to verify the version, and provide remediation information.
  2. Record your deployment details. For every potentially affected host or service, capture the exact product, edition, version and build; deployment mode; relevant operating system or architecture; configuration; and exposure. For software you build or distribute, locate the relevant software bill of materials (SBOM) as well.
  3. Compare the advisory’s conditions with the inventory. Check the affected version range and every stated prerequisite. A package name match is not enough: the advisory may apply only when a feature is enabled, a particular operating system or architecture is used, or a specific configuration is present.
  4. Check standardized vulnerability records. Use the CVE and National Vulnerability Database (NVD) records to cross-check identifiers, references, applicability information, and context such as CVSS or CWE when available. Follow the references to the vendor advisory rather than treating the record as a replacement for it.
  5. Check exploitation and response priority. Read the vendor’s exploitation statement and check whether the CVE appears in the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog. Consider exposure, evidence of exploitation, exploit automation, and technical impact when deciding how urgently to act.
  6. Apply the vendor’s fix or mitigation. Follow the applicable vendor instructions for your product and deployment. If the vendor documents a mitigation for systems that cannot yet be upgraded, record what was applied and which systems remain on the affected version.
  7. Verify and rescan. Check the version and configuration on the running system after remediation. Rescan affected hosts using a scanner that explicitly supports detection of that vulnerability, and confirm its coverage for the particular CVE.
  8. Continue monitoring. Follow vendor advisories, CISA and other national cyber-agency alerts, KEV updates, and relevant security feeds. Maintain your own inventory: a national vulnerability catalog may not include niche software you use.

How do you decide whether the advisory applies to your version?

Compare your installed build and configuration with the advisory’s affected range and prerequisites. A version outside the stated range is not identified by that advisory as affected, but do not infer that a system is fixed unless the vendor’s guidance establishes that conclusion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the advisory for distinctions that can change the answer:

  • Range boundaries: Determine whether the advisory names specific releases, a range, or separate affected branches. Match the full installed version and build against the vendor’s wording.
  • Product variants: Confirm that the advisory covers your edition and deployment type. Similar names do not establish that two editions share the same affected code or fix status.
  • Feature and configuration requirements: If the flaw requires a feature to be enabled or a particular configuration, check the actual deployed setting. Do not assume a default configuration when the system may have been changed.
  • Platform conditions: Where the vendor specifies operating system or architecture, verify those details for the affected installation rather than assuming all platforms behave alike.
  • Fix and mitigation language: Distinguish a fixed release from a workaround or mitigation. A mitigation may reduce risk without changing the version number or removing the vulnerable component.

If the advisory is unclear about a version boundary or deployment condition, treat applicability as unresolved and seek clarification from the vendor or your support channel. Do not convert uncertainty into a confirmed “not affected” finding.

What do CVE, NVD, CVSS, and CWE tell you?

A CVE identifies a vulnerability, while NVD adds standardized records and context. Neither a CVE identifier nor an NVD entry, by itself, proves that a particular deployment is affected.

NVD can provide information such as Common Platform Enumeration (CPE) applicability, a Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) score, a Common Weakness Enumeration (CWE) classification, and references. Use these as aids for identification and triage, then confirm applicability against the vendor advisory and your own inventory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NVD notes that its score can differ from a vendor’s score because the two assessments may use different information available to each assessor. A score is therefore context, not a final patch-order decision. Account for exposure, exploitation information, and technical impact as well. CISA’s prioritization guidance identifies factors including asset exposure, KEV status, exploit automation, and technical impact.

When a catalog entry and vendor advisory appear to disagree, check the advisory’s publication or update details and the referenced material. The vendor’s product-specific guidance is the starting point for affected versions and remediation; NVD is useful for standardized context and cross-checking.

How do you check whether a vulnerable dependency is inside your application?

For a flaw in a library or other dependency, determine whether the affected package and version are present in the software you build or deploy. An SBOM can help identify components; VEX or equivalent vendor evidence can help establish whether the vulnerability affects the assembled product.

CISA describes an SBOM as a formal record of software components that helps people understand software supply-chain makeup and risk. Search the SBOM for the affected package and version, including the components included in the relevant build. An SBOM shows component presence; it does not, on its own, establish that the vulnerable code is reachable or that the assembled product is affected.

Vulnerability Exploitability eXchange (VEX) provides additional status information about a product’s relationship to a vulnerability. CISA describes a VEX document as “a machine-readable security advisory that clarifies and prioritizes vulnerability risk.” A VEX statement may indicate that a product is affected, not affected, fixed, or under investigation. Check that the statement applies to the product and version you actually use.

If you do not have an SBOM or VEX statement, search the relevant repositories and build artifacts for the affected package and version, then seek product-specific evidence from the vendor. A dependency alert is a reason to investigate, not automatically proof that every application containing the package is exploitable.

Evidence What it can establish What it does not establish by itself
Vendor advisory Affected products and versions, stated conditions, fixes, mitigations, and verification guidance. Whether a particular host currently runs the affected build or configuration.
Asset and software inventory What product, edition, version, build, deployment, and configuration your records show for a system. Whether an advisory’s technical conditions apply unless compared against them.
SBOM Components recorded as part of a software product or build. Whether a vulnerability in a listed component affects the assembled product.
VEX statement A product-specific vulnerability status such as affected, not affected, fixed, or under investigation. Applicability to a different product or version than the one the statement covers.
NVD or CVE record Standardized identification, references, and additional vulnerability context. Whether your deployment meets the vendor’s affected conditions.
Vulnerability scan Findings within the scanner’s supported detection coverage for the systems scanned. Absence of a flaw if the scanner does not detect that specific vulnerability or the relevant system was not covered.

How urgent is a newly disclosed vulnerability?

Prioritize according to the vulnerability’s exploitation status and the conditions of your deployment—not CVSS alone. A flaw listed in CISA KEV has evidence of active exploitation and clear remediation under the catalog’s inclusion criteria, making that status an important signal for response planning.

Check the KEV catalog and the vendor’s exploitation statement, then consider:

  • Exposure: Is the affected service reachable from the internet or otherwise accessible to an attacker?
  • Exploitation evidence: Does the vendor report exploitation, or is the CVE included in KEV?
  • Exploit automation: Does the available context indicate that exploitation can be automated?
  • Technical impact: What impact does the advisory describe if the flaw is exploited?
  • Remediation options: Is a fixed version available, or does the vendor document a mitigation that can be applied while a fix is unavailable?

These factors inform urgency; they do not change the vendor’s affected-version criteria. A lower score does not make an exposed, actively exploited flaw irrelevant, and a high score does not prove that your particular system is affected.

How can you verify that a patch fixed the vulnerability?

Verify both the software state and the detection evidence. A successful update command or a scanner’s clean result is not enough unless it corresponds to the affected host, the vendor’s fixed version or mitigation, and scanner coverage for that CVE.

  1. Confirm the change on the running system. Check the installed version and build after the update. Compare them with the vendor’s fixed-version guidance rather than relying only on a deployment job’s success message.
  2. Check configuration-dependent remediation. If the vendor’s fix or mitigation depends on a setting, verify that the setting is present on the running service. Record the evidence and scope of the change.
  3. Confirm the affected hosts were included. Ensure that the systems or services covered by the advisory were actually updated or mitigated. Resolve inventory gaps before treating the entire deployment as remediated.
  4. Rescan with relevant coverage. Use a scanner that explicitly detects the CVE and confirm that it supports the particular vulnerability and applies to the systems scanned. The UK National Cyber Security Centre recommends checking scanner coverage for the vulnerability and rescanning affected hosts.
  5. Resolve conflicting results. If a scan still reports the flaw, compare the detected version and host with the current inventory and vendor guidance. If the scan is clear but the version remains in an affected range, check the scanner’s CVE coverage and the vendor’s mitigation conditions before closing the finding.

Keep a record of the advisory, systems assessed, version and configuration evidence, remediation applied, scan coverage, and remaining exceptions. This makes it possible to explain why a finding was closed—or why a system still needs attention.

What should you do if the evidence is incomplete?

Keep the finding open as unresolved until you can establish whether the advisory applies. A missing version, incomplete dependency inventory, or unclear vendor condition is not evidence that the software is safe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • You cannot identify the installed build: Obtain version and build information from the running host or service and update the asset inventory. Follow the vendor’s stated method for verifying a version where one is provided.
  • The advisory does not clearly cover your edition: Check the vendor’s references and seek product-specific clarification. Do not assume a similarly named edition shares the same status.
  • You have a dependency alert but no product-level status: Check the SBOM and build artifacts, then look for VEX or equivalent vendor evidence that addresses the affected product and version.
  • Your scanner reports no finding: Confirm that the scanner detects this specific CVE and that the relevant hosts were scanned. A tool’s general vulnerability scanning capability does not establish coverage for every new disclosure.
  • Your software is niche or absent from a catalog: Continue checking the vendor’s advisories and maintain your own software inventory. National catalogs may omit niche products.

How do you keep the check current?

A one-time check answers only what was known and deployed at that time. Track the vendor advisory and relevant security alerts for updates, because affected-version details, fixes, and exploitation context may change as information develops.

Maintain a usable inventory of products, editions, builds, deployment modes, and relevant configurations, and keep SBOMs available for software you build or distribute. When an advisory changes, compare the updated conditions with that inventory again. Monitor vendor advisories, CISA and other national cyber-agency alerts, KEV updates, and feeds relevant to your products; do not rely on a single catalog as a complete list of software risks.

The practical standard is evidence: a vendor-defined applicability match against the actual deployment, followed by documented remediation and verification. If either part is missing, the status is not yet confirmed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a CVE number mean my software has been hacked?

No. A CVE identifies a reported vulnerability; it does not establish that your particular installation is affected or that anyone exploited it. Use the vendor’s advisory to determine applicability, and check exploitation information separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I prioritize a CVE by its CVSS score alone?

No. A CVSS score is one piece of context, and NVD and vendor scores can differ because assessors may have different information. Include exposure, exploitation evidence, automation, technical impact, and the remediation available to your deployment.

Can a clean scan prove that a system is not vulnerable?

Not by itself. A clean result is meaningful only if the scanner covers the specific vulnerability and scanned the relevant hosts; compare it with the installed build and the vendor’s applicability conditions.

What does it mean if a VEX status says “under investigation”?

It means the product’s vulnerability status has not been resolved in that statement. It is not equivalent to “not affected”; check that the VEX statement matches your product and version, and follow the vendor’s subsequent updates.
