Use two free Google reports together: Search Console’s Generative AI performance report shows when links to your site appeared in Google’s AI Overviews or AI Mode, while Google Analytics 4 (GA4) shows what happened after people arrived through organic search. Search Console reports AI-feature impressions, not a separate AI Overview click total. GA4 places non-ad visits from both Google AI features in the broader Organic Search channel. Matching pages and date ranges can reveal a trend consistent with AI-assisted traffic, but neither product provides a direct impression-to-visit attribution join.
This workflow reflects Google’s reporting available worldwide by August 31, 2026. It also explains what the numbers do not prove, how to handle a missing report, and how to avoid counting the same AI-feature data twice.

What can you actually measure about Google AI Overview traffic?
Search Console and GA4 measure different stages of a visit. The specialized Search Console report measures visibility inside Google’s generative features; GA4 measures sessions and outcomes after a person reaches your site. Search Console’s ordinary Performance report measures overall web clicks, but does not split out clicks from AI Overviews.
| Tool or report | Stage measured | What it shows | Scope and useful breakdowns |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search Console Generative AI performance | Shown | Impressions for links to your property in AI Overviews and AI Mode | Pages, countries, dates and devices; Web text search or Web multimodal search |
| Search Console Performance | Clicked in Google Search | Overall web clicks and impressions | AI-feature activity is included in Web totals, not isolated as an AI Overview click count |
| GA4 Traffic acquisition | Arrived and interacted | Organic Search sessions, engagement and configured key events | Google AI Overview and AI Mode non-ad visits are pooled with other organic-search visits |
Because these are different measurements, an increase in AI-feature impressions alongside an increase in organic sessions is directional evidence, not proof that every additional session came from an AI Overview link.

How do I open the Generative AI performance report in Search Console?
Google says the report has rolled out worldwide. You need access to the Search Console property that represents the site you want to examine.
- Select the correct property. Open Search Console, use the property selector, and confirm the exact domain or URL-prefix property. A different protocol, subdomain or URL-prefix can produce a different data set.
- Open the report. In the Search Console navigation, choose the Generative AI performance report. It covers both AI Overviews and AI Mode; it is not an AI Overview-only report.
- Check the date range. Start with a period long enough to show a trend, then narrow it to a launch, content change or other event you are investigating. Report dates use Pacific Time.
- Read the headline metric correctly. An impression means a link to your site was shown to a user in a generative AI feature. It does not mean the link was clicked, that the page loaded, or that a conversion occurred.
If the report is absent, Google says the property may not yet have received enough impressions in Search generative AI features. A missing report is therefore not evidence that no user saw your pages.

They appear in the Generative AI performance report, where you can change the table dimension to see which pages, countries, dates or devices received visibility. The report’s data describes links shown in AI Overviews and AI Mode together.
Use Pages to find the URLs being cited
Open the Pages table to identify the individual URLs associated with impressions. This is the most useful view when you want to connect AI visibility with a landing page’s organic sessions or conversions in GA4. Record the exact URL format shown so that your later comparison uses the same page.
Use Countries, Dates and Devices for patterns
Country, date and device dimensions help distinguish a broad change from a localized one. A page may gain impressions in one country or on one device group while its property-wide total remains flat. The date labels follow Pacific Time, so preserve that convention when you export or compare periods.
What is the difference between Web text search and Web multimodal search?
The report provides separate search-type filters. Web text search covers text queries; Web multimodal search covers searches that use images, including Google Lens, Circle to Search, uploaded images and Chrome image search.
Rank #2
Choose the filter before interpreting a trend. If you are investigating a product image, visual how-to or Lens discovery, multimodal data may be relevant even when text-search impressions are unchanged. Do not combine the two views and label the result as text-only AI Overview exposure.
How should I export and reconcile Search Console data?
Use the report’s export control when you need a spreadsheet for page-level analysis or a recurring dashboard. Treat the exported values as a copy of the report’s aggregation rules, not as a second independent measurement.
- Set the property, period and search type first. Export only after the filters reflect the question you are answering.
- Export the chart and the relevant table. The chart aggregates at property level, or at URL level when a URL filter is applied. The Pages table aggregates by page; country, device and date tables aggregate by property.
- Expect totals to differ. Different aggregation levels can make a chart total unlike a table total. This is a reporting behavior, not automatically a data error.
- Label preliminary data. Google notes that the newest chart values can be preliminary. Mark the extraction date and avoid treating the most recent partial period as final.
- Account for row limits. Normal Search performance limits apply, including a 1,000-row limit. A table that ends at 1,000 rows is not a complete inventory of every URL.
- Interpret export symbols. Google says values displayed as
~or-in exports are represented as zero in the downloaded data. Keep the original report view if you need to distinguish an explicit zero from a suppressed or approximate display.
Do not add Generative AI report figures to the overall Performance totals. Google describes the specialized report as data within the Web-search scope, so adding it would count the same underlying activity twice.
Can Google Search Console show AI Overview clicks?
No, not as a separate official total. The Generative AI performance report is impression-focused. Google says AI-feature appearances are included in the ordinary Performance report’s Web search type, but that combined total cannot be read as “AI Overview clicks.”
You can still inspect overall Web clicks for the same pages and dates, then compare them with AI-feature impressions. Present that comparison as context: Search Console is showing links displayed and aggregate web clicks, not a click-by-click join identifying which click came from which AI feature.
How do I check arrivals and conversions in GA4?
GA4 is the place to measure what happened after a visitor reached your site. Google’s channel grouping puts non-ad clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode in Organic Search, alongside other unpaid search visits.
- Open the relevant GA4 property. Make sure it tracks the same site and URL set you selected in Search Console.
- Go to Traffic acquisition. Use the report’s session default channel group and select Organic Search. Do not use AI Assistant as a proxy for Google AI Overviews: Google defines that separate channel for recognized external assistant sources and explicitly excludes its own AI Overviews and AI Mode.
- Match the period and pages. Use the same date window and, where your GA4 report allows it, examine the landing pages corresponding to URLs identified in Search Console.
- Review outcomes. Compare sessions with engagement metrics and the key events you have configured, such as a form submission or purchase. GA4 can show that organic visitors engaged or converted; it cannot identify which of those organic sessions came specifically from an AI Overview.
If you use different date boundaries, properties or URL definitions, the two systems will not line up even when both are working correctly. Keep a note of the selected filters and report time basis with every comparison.
How can I compare AI visibility with organic traffic without overstating attribution?
Use a page-and-period comparison as a directional analysis, not an attribution report.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Choose a baseline. Select a prior period comparable to the period you are studying, and keep the page set consistent.
- Record AI-feature impressions. From Search Console’s Generative AI report, capture impressions for the selected pages and period.
- Record organic activity. In Search Console, capture overall Web clicks; in GA4, capture Organic Search sessions and the outcomes that matter to your site.
- Look for aligned movement. A rise in AI-feature impressions accompanied by a rise in organic visits is consistent with traffic arriving during greater AI visibility.
- State the limitation in your report. Say that the pattern is suggestive, not that AI Overviews caused a specific number of visits. The official reports do not provide an AI Overview-specific impression-to-click connection.
Search Console measures what Google displayed, while GA4 measures requests that reached your site and subsequent events. Differences between those stages are expected, so a one-to-one conversion from impressions to sessions would be misleading.
Why might the report be missing or show less data than expected?
Insufficient generative-feature impressions
Google says the report may not appear until a property has enough impressions in Search generative AI features. Keep checking the correct property rather than interpreting the absence as zero exposure.
Search Labs activity is excluded
The report excludes Search Labs experiments. Visibility from an experiment therefore will not appear in this standard report.
The selected property is too narrow or different
A URL-prefix property, a domain property and a subdomain property can represent different scopes. Verify the property selector before comparing a report with site-wide GA4 numbers.

The period is still changing
Recent chart values may be preliminary. Wait for the period to mature before drawing a final conclusion, especially when a short date range contains only a few days.
Table and chart views use different aggregation
Comparing a property-level chart with a page-level table can produce different totals by design. Use the same dimension and filters when checking whether two exports agree.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does a page need special AI optimization to appear?
Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations for appearing in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible for a normal Search snippet to be eligible as a supporting link, but eligibility does not guarantee that Google will serve it.
That distinction matters when diagnosing low impressions. Technical eligibility means a page can be considered; it does not promise a citation for a particular query, country, device or date.

What should a recurring measurement routine look like?
A lightweight routine makes trends easier to interpret without pretending to produce exact attribution.
- Confirm the Search Console property and GA4 property match.
- Capture the Generative AI report’s total and top Pages for a fixed period.
- Record whether the view is Web text or Web multimodal search.
- Note the report’s Pacific-Time date range and whether the newest values are preliminary.
- Export page, country, date or device data when a segment needs investigation.
- Check GA4 Organic Search sessions, engagement and configured key events for the same pages and period.
- Keep AI Overview and AI Mode together unless Google adds a documented way to separate them.
- Describe aligned changes as evidence consistent with AI visibility, never as an exact AI Overview visit count.
What does Google say about overall organic click trends?
In an August 6, 2025 statement, Liz Reid, Google’s vice president and head of Search, said that “Overall, total organic click volume from Google Search to websites has been relatively stable year-over-year.” She also said average click quality had increased and that Google was sending “slightly more quality clicks to websites than a year ago,” defining quality clicks as visits where users do not quickly click back.
Best Value
Those are Google’s aggregate observations, not an independent study and not an AI Overview-specific result. They should not override the measurements for your own pages in Search Console and GA4.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I separate AI Overviews from AI Mode in the report?
The documented Generative AI performance report combines AI Overviews and AI Mode. Unless the interface provides a documented feature-specific filter, report the result as generative-feature visibility rather than an AI Overview-only number.
Why did an AI-feature impression increase without more sessions?
An impression records that a link was shown, not that it was selected. The page may also have appeared for low-intent queries, competed with other links, or been viewed during a period whose GA4 data is still preliminary or differently scoped.
Should I use the GA4 AI Assistant channel for Google’s AI Overviews?
No. Google places non-ad visits from AI Overviews and AI Mode in Organic Search. AI Assistant is a separate channel for recognized external assistant sources and excludes Google’s own AI features.
How often should a small site review these reports?
A monthly review is usually sufficient for a low-volume site, with an extra check after publishing a major content update or seeing an unusual organic-traffic change. Use the same property, filters and date conventions each time so the comparison remains meaningful.
