To find out whether an indie game uses AI-generated artwork or other player-facing assets, check its Steam AI Generated Content Disclosure or itch.io AI tags first, then look for specific developer statements and provenance attached to the original files. Visual clues and detector scores can help identify files worth examining, but neither proves that an asset was generated. A missing disclosure, watermark, or credential is not proof that a game is AI-free.
What is the most reliable way to check an indie game for AI assets?
Start with the game’s own storefront disclosure, then check dated credits or developer statements, and only then examine individual files. This order distinguishes what the developer has declared from what you can infer by looking at an image or listening to a voice line.

- Check the storefront. On Steam, use Ctrl-F on the store page to find AI Generated Content Disclosure. On itch.io, inspect the project’s AI tags and any disclosure details.
- Read the exact wording. Look for the asset type, whether AI output appears in the shipped game or only in marketing, and whether people edited or replaced it. “AI was used during development” is less informative than a statement identifying the affected assets and build.
- Look for dated, specific confirmation. Check credits, patch notes, studio posts, interviews, and performer statements. Keep statements about concept exploration separate from claims about assets that shipped.
- Check provenance on the original file, if available. A signed Content Credential can document the history of a particular file. It does not automatically establish that the same file is in the game.
- Compare repeated evidence. Compare the same art or audio across official screenshots, trailers, press materials, and builds. Treat unusual visual or vocal details as leads, not verdicts.
- Use detectors last. A detector score is a probabilistic signal for human review, not a reliable percentage chance that a game uses AI.
Keep three things separate in your notes: what you directly observed, what a source documents about production, and what you infer. That separation makes it easier to say “confirmed for this file,” “strongly supported,” “plausible but unconfirmed,” or “not established” without turning suspicion into an accusation.
Where is the Steam AI disclosure, and what does it cover?
Valve’s Steamworks Content Survey asks developers to disclose generative AI used to create content that ships with a game and is consumed by players. The public store page displays much of that answer in a box headed AI Generated Content Disclosure, introduced with “The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:”.

Valve distinguishes two categories in the survey. Pre-generated content is content created with AI tools during development and included in the game. Live-generated content is created with AI while the game is running. The survey describes player-facing content such as artwork, sound, narrative, and localization; its current focus is not efficiency tools such as coding assistants.
Valve says it reviews AI-generated output as it reviews other content, including whether it is illegal or infringing and whether the game matches its marketing. For live-generated content, developers must describe safeguards against illegal content. Valve also states that its review team compares survey answers with the build and store page. Some answers cannot be changed after approval without contacting Steam Support.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Coverage of Valve’s January 2026 form update says capsule art, trailers, and other marketing materials count, even if they are outside the game build. That makes the disclosure useful for checking store art as well as in-game assets. The scope still matters: concept art that never ships, a placeholder replaced before the reviewed build, and code assistance are not the same claim as generated art in the released game.
A missing Steam disclosure is not a clean bill of health. The form is a developer disclosure, not an independent scan of every game file. As gHacks noted on 29 October 2025, updated 8 February 2026, a game without the section may still contain AI-created art or music. The absence of a box means that you do not have a public disclosure there; it does not establish how the assets were made.
How does itch.io label AI-generated content?
itch.io has a project-edit field called Generative AI disclosure. According to itch.io administrator leafo’s 20 November 2024 announcement, choosing yes adds an AI Generated tag and sub-tags for Graphics, Sound, Text & Dialog, and Code; choosing no adds No AI. The latter reflects an explicit creator answer, not an automatic platform finding.
The field is required for asset creators. itch.io says assets made with generative AI remain subject to disclosure even if they were modified afterward; untagged AI-comprised assets are no longer eligible for indexing on browse pages. Its scope includes shipped code synthesized by a language model, unlike Steam’s current emphasis on player-consumed content. Traditional game AI—such as pathfinding, procedural levels, or dynamic difficulty—is not generative AI under itch.io’s definition.
Read the tag alongside the project description and the creator’s details. A category tag tells you which kind of content the creator says is involved, but it may not explain which files, how much editing took place, or which version contains the content. As with Steam, an absent tag is not proof of absence; the strongest interpretation is the one the creator explicitly stated.
What makes a disclosure useful rather than vague?
A useful disclosure identifies the content, stage, and scope. “Some background textures were generated and hand-edited; character art was not” gives a reader more to evaluate than “AI was used in development.” If the game includes live generation, a useful explanation also describes where it appears and what limits are in place.

- Version and date: whether the statement refers to the current release, an earlier build, or a specific patch.
One example of a specific negative statement is the Steam disclosure cited for AI2U: “None of the art assets in the game are AI-generated.” It identifies the asset category and what the developer says about it. It remains a developer statement, rather than independent verification.
The AI Transparency Index tracked 26,626 public Steam disclosures in 2026. In that set, it classified 18,639 as content in the game, 3,743 as store or marketing only, 1,537 as development only, and 836 as live AI during play. It reported that 77% involved visual AI—2.7 times the share involving text AI—and 37% named two or more purposes (9,906 of 26,626 products). These figures describe disclosures the index tracked, not all Steam games; they cannot tell you how many undisclosed games use AI.

What visual clues can point to AI-generated game art?
Look for patterns that recur across assets or versions, not one famous-looking flaw. MacMyths’ game-asset guidance from 19 October 2026 emphasizes layered evidence: a repeated inconsistency in several shipped files is more informative than a single odd frame.
Check the object and its surroundings
- Repeated, mirrored, or tiled textures that do not fit the surrounding geometry.
- Perspective that shifts within one object, such as a door frame whose edges converge differently from the room.
- Lighting or shadows that point in different directions across a single prop or character.
- Small details that do not join up: handles, fingers, fasteners, weapons, or architectural connections.
- A sudden style change between adjacent assets that are supposed to share an art direction.
Inspect text and surface treatment
- Inconsistent letters, numbers, logos, or invented writing on signs, clothing, and objects.
- Linework or brushwork that appears uniformly “painted,” with little variation or visual rest.
- An unusually glossy, high-contrast, or plastic-looking finish that differs from neighboring art.
These are possible leads, not a checklist that proves generation. A garbled sign may be a deliberate design choice or an ordinary art mistake. Compression, upscaling, stylization, texture repetition, and a game’s own rendering can create similar effects. Compare at native resolution without sharpening, and verify whether the apparent flaw is present in more than one official source.
Hands and fingers are especially unreliable as a standalone test. A hand can be obscured by animation, perspective, compression, or an intentional style. Conversely, newer image-generation systems can produce plausible hands. IsItAI’s illustration guidance, updated 13 October 2026, also notes that signatures, straps, jewelry, stairs, and other small details can look suspicious, but none of those clues alone establishes how an image was made.
Do not treat pixel art as an exception with a secret visual test. A dedicated primary source on pixel-art-only forensic tells was not established in the material available here. Apply the general checks—coherence, consistency across official files, and production evidence—rather than inventing rules about palettes or pixel grids.

How should you compare screenshots, trailers, and game builds?
Comparison is most useful when the files depict the same asset and come from identifiable official sources. One compressed trailer frame is weak evidence; a repeated logo error across an official press image and multiple shipped scenes is more meaningful.
- Preserve the best original. Save the highest-quality screenshot, trailer still, press-kit image, or extracted file available. Record the title, platform, edition, region, version or patch, capture date, and source URL. Keep an archive copy with the UI, captions, and letterboxing intact.
- Compare like with like. Match the same character, prop, or environment across gameplay, screenshots, trailers, press kits, and later patches. Note whether a detail changes between builds.
- Account for regional and technical differences. Localization, rating variants, compression, filters, and upscaling can change what appears in a screenshot. Record the build and geography rather than treating every difference as an art inconsistency.
- Look for recurrence. Ask whether a flaw repeats in the same asset, across multiple assets, or only in a single re-encoded image.
- Keep the conclusion narrow. State which file or asset the evidence concerns. Do not infer that every art asset in the game has the same origin.
If you can preserve a file reliably, hashing it can help establish that later comparisons refer to the same file. A hash documents file identity; it does not identify the artist or prove whether AI was used.

Can Content Credentials prove an asset was made with AI?
A valid, signed Content Credential can document a particular file’s recorded history, including a supported tool’s generation or editing action. C2PA describes provenance as facts about the history of digital content. It is a history record, not a truth meter or a verdict about the entire game.
Inspect the full chain where possible: who issued the credential, signing time, software, parent asset, and listed transformations. A credential attached to a concept sketch does not by itself show that the final in-game texture came from that sketch. Likewise, a credential on a promotional PNG applies to that file, not necessarily to a similar-looking asset in the build.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCredentials are often missing from game files. A screenshot or an engine-extracted texture usually will not retain the original signal, and social platforms commonly remove metadata. Manual screenshotting and resaving can strip a manifest too. Some cooperating generators and cameras embed signed manifests; many open-source generation workflows do not. Therefore, a file with a credential gives you something specific to inspect, while a file without one remains unresolved—not human-made by default.
Public ways to inspect credentials include the Content Authenticity Verifier, Adobe Content Authenticity web app and browser extension, OpenAI Verify for OpenAI tools, Google SynthID Detector for Google models, the official c2patool command-line tool, and Tellmark checker. Their scope differs: a negative result from a tool designed for one provider does not rule out other sources. For sensitive files, prefer an in-browser or offline method that does not require uploading the file.
Are AI-art detectors accurate enough to settle the question?
No. Detectors are best used to flag a file for closer human review, not to establish that an indie game contains AI art. Results depend on the model, threshold, compression, style, and training data; no universal accuracy rate for detecting AI artwork inside shipped indie games is established.
Max Intel’s 2026 detector roundup reports false-positive rates of about 5–15% on human-made work. That means a human-created image can be flagged, and the risk is especially relevant for compressed game art, pixel-art filters, and painterly indie styles. The Content Authenticity Initiative likewise warns that detector results can be unreliable and that detection tools must keep adapting.
Human judgment has limits too. A 2025 study by Cunningham, “An eye for AI,” tested 406 U.S. adults identifying ten unlabeled artworks—five generated with DALL·E 3 and five made by humans—and reported 53.51% correct creator identification, described by the author as only slightly above chance. Participants identified the AI images 66.27% of the time, while human digital art was often misclassified as machine-made. The figure is from the study as cited by IsItAI; the underlying journal PDF was not reviewed for this account.
Other experiments point in the same direction without establishing a universal game-art score. Scott Alexander’s 2024 Astral Codex Ten quiz, with about 11,000 participants and 50 pictures, produced a 60.6% average score; 84% of quiz-takers thought Mitchell Stuart’s human-made “Victorian Megaship” was AI-generated. In a 2026 study of game levels, players were correct in 53% of 812 trials; after balancing, AI-level detection was 47.2%, consistent with chance. These studies test different materials and tasks, so their percentages should not be treated as a detector rating for a specific game.

If you do try a detector, record its name and the file submitted, and describe the output as that tool’s result. Public options include Hive Detect for images, video, and audio; Optic AI or Not, whose vendor claims 98.9% accuracy; Illuminarty; SightEngine; Maybe’s AI Art Detector; and ImageWhisperer, which combines reverse-image search with a credential check and offers two free checks a day. Vendor claims are not independent verification. Classical forensic tools such as FotoForensics ELA, Forensically, ExifTool, and JPEGsnoop can help inspect file properties or edits, but they are not AI classifiers. A 2024 study by Ha and colleagues, “Organic or Diffused,” found that an automated detector and expert artists made different kinds of mistakes.
How can you check AI-generated voices or other audio?
For voice acting, gather several clean lines from the same character, language, and build before drawing conclusions. A single social-media clip may have been re-encoded, time-stretched, dubbed, or processed after recording.

- Check for abrupt shifts in timbre, accent, or microphone distance within a sentence.
- Listen for robotic transitions between sounds, or an identical inflection reused in different contexts.
- Compare room tone with surrounding dialogue, and compare the audio with lip movement, subtitles, and localization timing.
Every item can also have an ordinary explanation. ADR, gating, time-stretching, dubbing, localization, a restrained performance, or a mismatch between subtitles and audio can produce similar impressions. MacMyths’ 2026 guidance finds no authoritative universal accuracy percentage for identifying AI game voice acting; the FTC’s voice-cloning work, as summarized there, also concludes that no single detection solution covers every case.
Keep the question specific: is there evidence that a particular line or performance was generated, and is there a dated statement or production record that confirms it? Do not identify a performer as synthetic from an unusual syllable or an audio detector score alone. SAG-AFTRA’s 2025 Interactive Media Agreement distinguishes visual and vocal digital replicas and requires a “reasonably specific description of intended use” for a digital replica. The agreement was ratified by 95.04% of voting members; that is a membership vote, not a measure of detection accuracy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you conclude when the evidence is mixed?
Use a confidence label that matches the evidence and identifies its scope. “Not established” is a valid answer when a storefront is silent and the visual clues are ambiguous.
- Confirmed provenance: a relevant signed history record or direct, specific production documentation identifies the file or asset.
- Strongly supported: multiple independent, specific sources point to the same asset and build, though a definitive record is absent.
- Plausible but unconfirmed: visual or audio patterns raise a question, but there is no direct confirmation.
- Not established: the evidence is missing, contradictory, or too weak to support a claim.
Keep the wording proportional. “The store disclosure says the game uses AI-generated background art” reports a source. “This sign has inconsistent lettering in two official screenshots” reports an observation. “The whole game is AI-generated” is a much broader conclusion and needs evidence that covers the whole game. Avoid accusing an individual artist based on one frame or a detector result; human digital art is often misclassified.

AI use is not equally visible in every part of a game. Store art and in-game visuals are public, easy to share, and often the first assets a player encounters. A 2026 analysis by GameDevAIHub of 352,296 English-language Steam reviews counted 4,019 mentions of disclosure labels, 2,938 of hands and fingers, and 1,092 of a glossy “AI look.” These are mentions in that review set, not a measure of all player opinion.
In the same analysis, 78.9% of reviews that mentioned AI in games identified as caught using it were negative—3.4 times those games’ overall negative-review rate. Among negative reviews that named a use, visual art accounted for 49.1%, writing and text 26.8%, voice 21.6%, and code 2.4%. When reviewers named store or marketing images, 92% of those reviews were thumbs-down; the corresponding figures were 78% for cutscenes and 66% for in-game art. The figures describe reviews that mention AI, not the chance that any player will dislike a game.

Public-disclosure counts and player reaction are different questions. GameDevAIHub reported that AI-flagged launches accounted for 10.9% of Steam releases in 2024, 19.9% in 2025, and 30.8% so far in 2026. A separate census of 53,597 Steam games from July 2023 through July 2026, attributed to Sulka Haro and reported by Game Growth Advisor on 6 October 2026, described roughly one in three new games as carrying a genuine AI disclosure by mid-2026. Both figures concern declared games; neither measures undisclosed use.
Evidence about audience response also has limits. A December 2025 Game Oracle analysis of paid Steam games released January–October 2025 estimated 52.6% fewer first-month reviews for games with an AI disclosure than for comparable games without one, using reviews as a sales stand-in; its author warned that bias could remain. A GameDiscoverCo survey of about 3,800 Steam fans in July 2026 found 8% said they would not buy a game with AI, 43% said they had no major issue with it, and only 17% believed developers fully disclose. These are survey and review analyses, not a guarantee of how a particular game will perform.
Steam’s Valve business team has said it will not ban AI, and that AI-assisted games can still be approved. At Steam Indie Connect, as reported by heise on 29 October 2026, the team also said the first two days of Steam Next Fest serve demos practically at random, making low-quality demos especially visible then. A disclosure is not a quality rating; the relevant question for a player is what was used, where it appears, and whether the store description is clear.
What common mistakes should you avoid?
- “There’s no watermark, so it’s human-made.” Screenshots, engine import, and social platforms can strip metadata and credentials.
- “The detector says 90%, so it’s settled.” A score depends on the tool and its input; false positives are documented.
- “That hand or syllable proves it.” Rendering, compression, animation, dubbing, and ordinary artistic choices can create similar anomalies.
- “AI-assisted means untouched generated output.” Ask which stage, file, and build the statement concerns.
- “There is no Steam box, so the game is clean.” The disclosure is self-reported; a missing box does not establish absence.
- “A polished or even finish is proof.” Human digital artists can use consistent techniques and are often misidentified as AI.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a missing Steam AI disclosure mean the game is AI-free?
No. The store box records what the developer disclosed; it is not a platform-wide scan of the game’s assets. Treat the page as one source and distinguish an absent statement from an explicit answer.
Can a game use AI for coding without listing AI-generated art?
Yes. Steam’s current survey focuses on player-consumed content and does not make coding assistants its focus. itch.io’s generative AI field has a Code sub-tag and includes shipped code synthesized by a language model.
Is procedural generation the same thing as generative AI?
Not necessarily. itch.io explicitly distinguishes traditional systems such as pathfinding, procedural levels, and dynamic difficulty from generative AI. Check the platform’s definition and the developer’s description rather than treating the word “procedural” as proof.
Does AI-generated artwork automatically have no copyright protection?
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit said in Thaler v. Perlmutter on 18 March 2025 that eligible work must be authored by a human, while also stating that human authorship does not rule out copyright for work made with AI assistance. The U.S. Copyright Office’s January 2025 report says prompts alone do not provide sufficient human control to make users authors of the output; ownership of a particular game asset remains a case-specific question.
