Do not enter payment details until you can identify the seller, confirm the exact trial and renewal price, see how often you will be billed, and locate the cancellation controls. A legitimate AI subscription offer states its introductory price, offer duration, standard renewal price, billing frequency, automatic-renewal terms, and cancellation method before payment. Check those details on the seller’s genuine website or in the app-store account that will manage billing. Save the checkout page and confirmation, then set a reminder for the next billing date. Treat an unexpected renewal message that asks for card details as a likely scam: do not use its link or phone number. Contact the company through a website or number you already know is genuine.
What makes an AI subscription offer legitimate?
A credible offer lets you determine who is charging you, what you pay now, what you will pay later, when the offer ends, and how to stop renewal. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises consumers to find the terms and conditions and avoid signing up when the trial length or cancellation method is unclear. Google Play policy likewise requires clear disclosure of subscription cost, billing frequency, automatic-renewal terms, and other material information.

- Seller identity: The legal or trading name, genuine domain, privacy notice, terms page, and a support route should be visible.
- Price today: The checkout should show the amount charged immediately, including any stated taxes or fees.
- Offer duration: A free or discounted period needs a defined number of days, a calendar end date, or another unambiguous duration.
- Renewal price: The standard amount after the promotion must be stated, not hidden behind wording such as “regular pricing applies.”
- Billing frequency: Look for monthly, yearly, or another recurring interval and the date on which the first recurring charge occurs.
- Automatic renewal: The page should say plainly that the plan renews unless you cancel, or state that it ends automatically.
- Cancellation and support: You should be able to see the cancellation route before submitting your card details and know where billing questions are handled.
The FTC’s consumer guidance states: “Before businesses get your credit card information, they have to tell you how to cancel. Businesses must make canceling simple for you. It’s the law.” If any of these points is missing or contradictory between the advertisement and checkout, pause instead of guessing.
How do I identify the real seller and checkout page?
Start with the transaction rather than the advertisement. An ad, social-media post, or email may promote an offer, but the company and platform shown at checkout determine who controls your subscription.

Inspect the domain and company identity
Read the domain name character by character. Look for misspellings, extra words, unusual endings, or a page that redirects through several unrelated domains. Confirm that the same company name appears in the terms, privacy notice, support page, and payment screen. A genuine-looking logo is not proof of ownership; the domain and legal details matter more.
Check where billing will be managed
A web purchase normally appears in the service’s account billing settings. An iPhone or iPad purchase is managed by the Apple account’s Subscriptions area, while an Android purchase made through Google Play appears in Google Play’s Subscriptions area. If the checkout does not make the billing platform clear, do not assume that deleting the app or account will stop charges.

Open the service’s website or app yourself instead of following a link in a message. Compare the support address and help pages with the information on the offer. For an existing subscription, the billing platform’s account page is a safer starting point than a renewal email.
Which renewal terms should I record before paying?
Copy the exact wording and numbers into a note or screenshot. A short record prevents a later dispute about what was disclosed.

Take a screenshot of the offer, the expanded terms, and the final confirmation. Keep the receipt and confirmation email even if the price is zero; they establish which account and platform accepted the subscription.

- Start from a known-good destination. Type the service’s address yourself or open its official app. Do not begin with a shortened link in a message.
- Match the seller. Compare the company name, domain, terms, privacy notice, and support information. A missing seller identity or a lookalike domain is a stop sign.
- Expand all pricing and renewal text. Record the introductory amount, promotion duration, recurring amount, billing interval, automatic-renewal statement, and any disclosed taxes.
- Find cancellation before checkout. Navigate to the account or platform settings far enough to see the control and instructions. The FTC says businesses must tell you how to cancel before obtaining your card information.
- Check the account that will be charged. Confirm the email address or Apple/Google account shown at checkout. Using a different account later can make a valid subscription appear missing.
- Save evidence. Capture the checkout terms, receipt, confirmation email, and the next billing date. Store them somewhere you can access if the account is locked.
- Set a reminder. Put the first renewal date on a calendar, with enough lead time to complete cancellation under the stated policy.
- Reconcile the first charge. Compare the card or bank statement with the disclosed amount and date. Investigate any mismatch through a known-good merchant channel.
How do free trials and discounted promotions renew?
A free or discounted period is often an introductory phase of a recurring subscription, not a one-time coupon. Unless the terms say the plan ends automatically, assume that the paid plan begins on the stated renewal date and that the disclosed standard rate will apply.
What happens with ChatGPT promotions?
OpenAI says most ChatGPT Plus promotions automatically renew at the standard monthly rate after the promotional period. If you do not want the paid plan, cancel on the same platform where the promotion started at least 24 hours before the first post-promotion billing date. Keep the promotion confirmation because it identifies the platform and account connected to the offer.
What if the offer does not state a trial end date?
Do not rely on an estimate based on the day you signed up. Ask the seller through its genuine support channel for the exact renewal date, or decline the offer until the checkout page provides one. An unclear duration is specifically the kind of ambiguity the FTC advises consumers to avoid.
Can a promotion have a different renewal price from the advertised plan?
It can only be evaluated from the terms shown at checkout. The recurring amount, frequency, and automatic-renewal condition must be visible before payment; save that wording so you can compare it with the later statement.
How do I cancel a ChatGPT subscription before it renews?
Cancel on the platform that processed the purchase. OpenAI says cancellation stops future renewals but does not automatically refund charges that have already been made. For an ordinary cancellation, access normally continues through the paid period, and OpenAI recommends completing the cancellation at least 24 hours before the next billing date.

OpenAI’s warning is explicit: “Uninstalling the ChatGPT app does not cancel your subscription.” Deleting an app removes local software; it does not instruct the web, Apple, or Google billing system to stop a recurring contract.

How do I avoid duplicate subscriptions?
OpenAI documents that separate subscriptions can exist simultaneously on chatgpt.com, Apple, and Google Play. Check all three locations when a charge does not match your expectation, especially after switching from an app-store purchase to the website. Identify the active billing platform, cancel the old subscription there, and keep the confirmation for each cancellation.
How can I tell whether a renewal email is a scam?
A legitimate renewal notice should refer to a subscription you recognize and should not require you to re-enter card details merely to keep an already authorized auto-renewing plan. The FTC warns that scammers send fake renewal notices to obtain payment information.

- Unexpected timing: You have no matching subscription, receipt, or account entry.
- Urgent payment demand: The message threatens immediate service loss unless you act through its link or phone number.
- Request for full card data: It asks for card number, security code, or password even though you previously agreed to automatic renewal.
- Lookalike sender or domain: The address differs subtly from the company’s known domain.
- Inconsistent amount: The price or date does not match your saved checkout terms or statement history.
Do not click the message link, open an attachment, or call its number. Sign in through a known-good website or app and inspect the subscription there. If the charge appears on your statement, contact the merchant using contact information you already trust, then contact your card issuer promptly if the charge is unauthorized.
What should I do if a charge is wrong or unauthorized?
First determine whether the amount is a disclosed renewal, a duplicate subscription, or a transaction you never authorized. Compare the statement descriptor, date, amount, receipt, and platform account.
- Check every billing platform. For services available on the web, Apple, and Google Play, look in each account before concluding that a charge is fraudulent.
- Compare against your saved terms. Verify the introductory period, recurring rate, billing interval, and expected date.
- Contact the merchant through a known-good channel. Use the service’s account support route or the platform that processed the payment, not a link in a suspicious notice.
- Request cancellation and retain proof. Save the request, confirmation, case number, and any response.
- Notify the card issuer promptly about an unauthorized charge. Follow its dispute process and provide the receipt, screenshots, statement entry, and your communication record.
Canceling stops future renewals; it does not automatically reverse a previous charge. Refund eligibility and handling depend on the seller or billing platform, so ask through the verified route and keep the response.

App deletion changes the device, not the subscription contract. Reopen the account or app-store Subscriptions page and cancel on the platform that processed the payment.

“The promotion was free, so there cannot be a future charge.”
A free period can be the first stage of an automatically renewing plan. Locate the post-promotion price and first billing date, then cancel before that date if you do not want the paid plan.
“The email has the company’s logo, so it must be genuine.”
Branding can be copied. Verify the subscription by signing in through a known-good route; never provide payment details through an unsolicited renewal message.
“I canceled on the website, but the app still shows a subscription.”
You may have separate web and app-store subscriptions. Check ChatGPT billing, Apple Subscriptions, and Google Play Subscriptions independently and match each entry to a receipt or statement charge.
“The checkout button was clear, but the renewal sentence was not.”
A prominent price does not cure missing material terms. If duration, recurring amount, billing frequency, or cancellation instructions are unclear, stop and request clarification before paying.

Apple states that auto-renewable subscriptions continue until the user cancels. Apple also explains that a price increase can trigger advance notice or a consent request; where consent is required and not provided, the subscription can expire at the old price. Read the notice in the Apple account rather than assuming that every increase is accepted silently.
Google Play policy requires developers to disclose subscription price, billing frequency, and automatic-renewal terms clearly and prohibits deceptive or manipulative purchase experiences. If the purchase screen does not present those facts in a way you can understand, do not complete it; save a screenshot and ask the developer or Google Play support for clarification.
What evidence should I keep for the life of the subscription?
Maintain one folder or note containing the checkout screenshot, expanded terms, receipt, confirmation email, account used, billing platform, next renewal date, cancellation confirmation, and any support case number. When a charge posts, add the statement date, amount, and merchant descriptor. This record lets you distinguish a disclosed renewal from a duplicate or unauthorized transaction without relying on memory.
Review statements around each expected billing date. A mismatch in amount, currency, or timing deserves investigation even when the service name looks familiar. Use the merchant’s verified support route first and escalate an unauthorized transaction to the card issuer promptly.

Can I cancel a subscription and still keep access immediately afterward?
For an ordinary ChatGPT cancellation, access normally continues through the paid period rather than ending at the instant you select Cancel. Check the account for the stated end date and keep the cancellation confirmation so continued access is not mistaken for a failed cancellation.
What should I do if the cancellation button is missing?
Do not submit payment details or rely on an email promise. Capture the page showing the missing control, contact support through the service or app-store account you opened independently, and ask for written instructions tied to your account and billing platform.
