To find out whether an AI agent changed or merely opened something in Downloads, you need audit data that was collecting activity when the run occurred. File names, modified times and ordinary folder history can show that a file changed, but they rarely identify who opened it, and they cannot reconstruct a past read when no auditing was enabled. Windows can record matching reads and writes with NTFS object-access auditing; Linux can record read, write, execute and attribute access with audit rules; macOS relies on file-change monitoring such as FSEvents and a FIM tool. In every case, correlate the filesystem record with the agent’s run ID, account, process and UTC timestamp. If monitoring was not active beforehand, the honest result is usually inconclusive, followed by a monitoring setup for the next run.

What can you prove about an AI agent’s activity?

The answer depends on the evidence source and whether it was enabled before the suspected activity. A file’s modified time proves only that some operation resulted in a modification; it does not identify the actor. A read-only opening is even harder to establish because many filesystems do not retain a durable, attributable record of reads by default.

Evidence source What it can show What it cannot establish by itself When it works
Windows NTFS object-access auditing (SACL) Matching read, write, modify and delete-related attempts, with account and path information in Security-log records That the AI model itself made the call; the record identifies the audited account/process context Only after object-access auditing and a folder SACL were configured
Linux audit rules Read, write, execute and attribute activity for a watched Downloads path, plus the audit context available for the event A historical read from before the rule existed After rules are loaded and audit logging is running
File-integrity monitoring (FIM) Creation, modification, deletion, checksum and attribute differences; some products add the user and process responsible for a change A read-only opening in the general case According to the tool’s scan or event schedule; change detection may be real-time or periodic
macOS FSEvents alone File-system change notifications that a FIM integration can turn into a change record Reliable read attribution, exact ordering of every event, or proof that an AI process opened a file When the stream is being collected; FSEvents can coalesce changes
File metadata alone Usually names, sizes, modification times and other current attributes Who opened a file, which process changed it, or what happened before the metadata was observed Always available, but weak for attribution

Microsoft’s guidance is explicit: “Before you set up auditing for files and folders, you must enable object access auditing.” Microsoft also notes that file and folder auditing is configured on NTFS drives and that you should plan the Security-log size. Those prerequisites are why inspecting a folder after an agent run often produces no definitive answer.

How should you preserve evidence before checking the folder?

Start by preserving the agent’s own records, then avoid changing the files while you investigate. An application log can supply a run ID, tool invocation, working directory, service account and process ID that a filesystem record alone cannot provide.

  • Record the exact start and end time of the agent run in UTC, including the host’s time-zone setting.
  • Save the agent, orchestration, shell and application logs before rotating or deleting them.
  • Write down the account or service identity used by the agent and the host on which it ran.
  • Capture current file names, sizes, modification times, permissions and checksums for files that matter. A checksum is useful for proving later content differences, not for proving who caused them.
  • Do not open or edit suspect files during collection if you are trying to preserve their original metadata and audit trail.

Use the same clock standard when comparing records. A filesystem event at 14:03:12 UTC should be compared with the agent log and process log at that time, not with an unconverted local timestamp.

How do I audit Downloads on Windows?

On Windows, configure object-access auditing in policy and then add a System Access Control List (SACL) to the Downloads folder. The resulting Security-log entries can record matching read, write and modify attempts, but only for the account and permissions you selected.

1. Enable object-access auditing

  1. Sign in with an account allowed to change local security policy or Group Policy.
  2. Open Local Security Policy with secpol.msc, or edit the applicable Group Policy for managed computers.
  3. Enable the object-access audit policy. On systems using Advanced Audit Policy Configuration, the relevant area is Object Access, including Audit File System.
  4. Choose success auditing for the operations you need. Add failure auditing only when there is a justified investigative or access-control reason, because it can increase log volume.
  5. Apply the policy and confirm that it has reached the computer before the next agent run.

Enabling a policy without a folder SACL does not make every file readable in the Security log. The policy permits auditing; the SACL selects which objects and access types generate records.

2. Add a SACL to the Downloads folder

  1. In File Explorer, right-click the user’s Downloads folder and choose Properties.
  2. Open Security, select Advanced, and open the Auditing tab.
  3. Add the user or service account that the AI agent actually uses. Auditing a human administrator does not automatically audit a separate agent service identity.
  4. Select the access types relevant to the question: Read for opening or reading, Write and Modify for content or metadata changes, and the applicable delete-related permissions for removals.
  5. Set the rule to apply to the folder, subfolders and files so that items created inside Downloads are covered.
  6. Save the rule and verify that inheritance and the selected account match your intended scope.

Use a narrow path and the specific agent identity where possible. Auditing an entire profile with broad read-success rules can produce a large Security log and make the agent’s events difficult to find.

3. Review and correlate Security-log events

  1. Open Event Viewer and go to Windows Logs → Security.
  2. Filter the relevant time window and inspect records that contain the audited account, object path and requested access.
  3. For each candidate event, record the UTC time, account, path, process name or ID when present, and the access type that succeeded or failed.
  4. Match those fields to the agent’s run ID and application logs. A service account event during the run is evidence that the account/process context accessed the object; it is not automatic proof that the language model itself issued the operation.

Plan Security-log retention before enabling high-volume read auditing. If the log overwrites old records, an event can disappear even though auditing was correctly configured.

What Windows records mean in practice

  • A successful read record supports the statement that the audited security context performed a matching read attempt on the path.
  • A successful write, modify or delete-related record supports a corresponding change attempt; verify the resulting checksum or file state before claiming the content changed.
  • A failed event indicates an attempted access that was denied or otherwise unsuccessful. It is not proof that the file was opened or altered.
  • No event is not proof of no activity. The rule may have been added after the run, the wrong account may have been selected, the drive may not be NTFS, or the Security log may have rolled over.

How do I audit Downloads on Linux?

Linux’s audit subsystem can watch the exact Downloads directory and record read, write, execute and attribute activity. Create rules for the real home directory, reload them before the agent runs, and search by the keys you assign.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Create path-specific audit rules

For a user named alice, rules based on the documented pattern look like this:

-w /home/alice/Downloads -p w -k downloads-w
-w /home/alice/Downloads -p a -k downloads-a
-w /home/alice/Downloads -p r -k downloads-r
-w /home/alice/Downloads -p x -k downloads-x

The permission letters represent write, attribute, read and execute activity. Replace /home/alice/Downloads with the exact path for the account whose files you need to protect. If the agent runs under a service account with a different home directory, watch that account’s Downloads path instead.

2. Load and verify the rules

  1. Place the rules in the system’s audit-rules file, such as /etc/audit/audit.rules, using the permissions appropriate for your distribution.
  2. Reload them with auditctl -R /etc/audit/audit.rules.
  3. Confirm that the rules are present using your distribution’s audit-status or rule-listing command.
  4. Run a controlled test with a non-sensitive test file: read it, change it, adjust an attribute and, if appropriate, execute a test object. Confirm that each expected key appears before relying on the setup.

3. Search records by key and correlate the process

Search the audit records by the key you assigned, such as downloads-r for reads or downloads-w for writes. Tools such as ausearch can filter by key and present decoded records; retain the complete event rather than copying only the path. Compare the event’s UTC time, user identity, process ID, executable and terminal or parent-process context with the AI agent’s logs.

Audit records can be plentiful on an active directory. Limit the watched path, choose retention appropriate for the investigation, and protect the audit logs from modification by the same account being monitored.

How do I monitor Downloads on macOS?

macOS FSEvents is the native change-notification mechanism commonly used by cross-platform file-integrity monitoring integrations. Configure a FIM tool to watch ~/Downloads, preserve event timestamps and hashes, and use process-aware audit data when you need attribution rather than change detection alone.

Configure a FIM watch

  1. Identify the exact user home directory and expand ~/Downloads to its full path in the monitoring tool.
  2. Enable monitoring for creation, modification, deletion and attribute changes, and choose a scan interval or real-time mode supported by the tool.
  3. Store the initial baseline, including checksums, outside the watched folder so an agent cannot alter both the evidence and the object.
  4. Preserve the event timestamp, path, old and new checksum where available, and the account or process fields supplied by the integration.
  5. Perform a controlled test and verify that a known file change appears in the FIM console or log.

FSEvents can coalesce multiple changes into a single event, and event ordering can differ in rare cases. Therefore, an FSEvents notification is strong evidence that something changed in the path, but it is not a complete, per-read transcript. When attribution matters, correlate it with process-aware audit data and the agent’s own run log.

Can file-integrity monitoring tell me that an AI only opened a file?

Usually not. FIM is designed to detect changes such as creation, modification, deletion, checksum differences and attribute changes. Rapid7 explicitly distinguishes this from file-access monitoring: its FIM does not track reads, while its separate file-access monitoring is intended for Windows network shares.

A file that has an unchanged checksum after an agent run may have been read, or it may not have been touched at all. It may also have been opened and rewritten with identical bytes, depending on the application and the events your platform records. Only a read-capable audit source that was active during the run can support a read claim, and even then you must interpret the recorded account and process context correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I distinguish a change from an attempted access?

Separate the event that was requested from the resulting state of the file. A write or delete-related audit entry is evidence of an operation attempt; a before-and-after checksum, size or content comparison establishes whether the file’s data actually changed.

Observation Safe conclusion Do not claim without more evidence
Read-success event with matching path and account The recorded account/process performed a matching read attempt That the AI model, rather than its host process, decided to read it
Write or modify event plus different checksum The audited context caused or participated in a data change during that interval Which individual instruction or model component produced the bytes
Delete-related event and missing file The audited context attempted deletion and the file is now absent Whether another process completed cleanup unless the event and process data show it
Changed modification time with no audit record The metadata currently reports a different time Who changed it, when the change happened, or whether an AI agent did it
No FIM alert No change was detected by that tool and schedule That the file was never read
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How should I attribute an event to the AI agent?

Attribution is a correlation exercise, not a label that the filesystem supplies automatically. Treat the event as evidence for the account and process recorded by the operating system, then connect that context to the agent run.

  • Run identifier: capture the orchestration or agent run ID and use it as the join key across logs.
  • Account or service identity: verify the exact user, service account, container identity or scheduled-task account.
  • Process identity: record process name and ID, parent process where available, and the executable path.
  • Application context: retain shell history, tool-call logs, API gateway records and the agent’s working-directory setting.
  • UTC time: compare timestamps with a documented clock source and account for clock skew between hosts.
  • Path and operation: match the normalized path and requested access type, including case and symbolic-link behavior where relevant.
  • Resulting state: use hashes, sizes and content comparison to verify an actual change.

If an agent runs inside a wrapper, the audited process may be the wrapper, interpreter or file-sync service rather than the model runtime. Phrase the finding precisely: for example, “the service account and process recorded by the host accessed this path during run 123,” rather than “the model opened the file,” unless the application log provides that additional link.

What if the suspected run already happened?

First check whether auditing, FIM and agent logs were active at that time. If none was enabled, ordinary metadata cannot usually reconstruct a past read, and a changed file may have many possible causes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Preserve the current files and logs, including Security, Linux audit or macOS/FIM records that still exist.
  2. Compare current checksums and timestamps with known-good copies, backups or version history.
  3. Look for agent run records, shell history, scheduled-task history, container logs and endpoint telemetry covering the same UTC interval.
  4. Check whether the relevant audit policy and SACL, Linux rule or FIM watch existed before the run and covered the exact path.
  5. Report the result as confirmed, partially supported or inconclusive, explaining which evidence is present and which is missing.
  6. Enable monitoring before the next run, then perform a controlled test so you know what a real event looks like.

Do not convert an absence of records into a clean bill of health when the monitoring system was not collecting the required event type.

Which monitoring approach should I choose?

Choose based on whether you need read visibility, change detection, process attribution or low log volume. No single method covers every question equally well.

Need Most suitable starting point Important trade-off
Prove reads on a Windows local NTFS folder Object-access auditing plus a narrow SACL Read-success auditing can create substantial Security-log volume
Capture reads and writes on a Linux path Linux audit rules for the exact Downloads directory Broad watches and long retention require storage and log-management planning
Detect changed content across platforms FIM with checksums and a protected baseline Periodic scans can detect a change after it happened, and ordinary FIM may not record reads
Watch macOS changes FSEvents-backed FIM with preserved timestamps and hashes Coalescing and occasional ordering differences limit event-by-event reconstruction
Explain which agent run caused a change Filesystem monitoring combined with agent and process logs Requires synchronized clocks, retained logs and a stable run identifier

A practical design often combines a low-noise FIM baseline for all changes with narrowly scoped read auditing during sensitive agent runs. Test the combination on a disposable file, document the expected records, and set retention long enough to cover your incident-response window.

What are the common failure modes?

  • Auditing was enabled after the run: no later configuration can recreate the missing historical read. Mark the incident inconclusive and instrument the next run.
  • The wrong identity was audited: add the service account, scheduled-task account or container identity that actually touched the folder.
  • The path was too broad or too narrow: normalize the real Downloads path and include subfolders and newly created files where required.
  • The drive or filesystem is unsupported: Windows object auditing requires an NTFS volume; verify the volume before relying on a SACL.
  • Logs rolled over: increase retention and forward records to protected storage before enabling high-volume read rules.
  • FIM showed no change: that says nothing conclusive about a read and may also reflect a scan interval, excluded path or coalesced event.
  • Timestamps do not line up: convert every source to UTC and account for clock drift before rejecting a correlation.
  • A process was mistaken for the model: report the operating-system account and process evidence separately from the agent’s semantic decision.

What should a defensible finding look like?

A useful finding states the evidence type, its coverage window and its limits. For example: “A Windows Security-log record shows a successful read request for C:UsersAliceDownloadsreport.pdf by service account X at 14:03:12 UTC; the event falls within agent run 123 and the process ID matches the agent wrapper.” If a checksum also changed, describe that as a separate result. If no read-capable audit was active, say that the historical read question cannot be resolved from the available metadata.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That level of precision prevents an unchanged timestamp or a missing FIM alert from being overstated as proof of what an AI agent did or did not do.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Windows file access times show that an AI opened a file?

Usually not reliably. Access-time updates may be disabled, delayed, suppressed by filesystem behavior or changed by another program, and they do not identify the account or process. Use object-access auditing that was enabled before the run when a read must be demonstrated.

Should I monitor the whole home directory instead of Downloads?

Only if your threat model requires it. Watching the smallest path that contains the agent’s working files reduces event volume and makes correlation easier; expand the scope when the agent can stage files elsewhere and document those additional paths.

How long should audit and FIM logs be retained?

Retain them for at least the longest period in which you might investigate an agent run, plus time for log-collection delays and backups. The exact duration depends on your incident-response policy and storage capacity; the key is preventing rollover before an investigation begins.

Can a sandbox or container hide file activity from the host audit?

It can change which identity and path appear in host records, especially when files are mounted into a container or copied through a synchronization layer. Trace the mount, shared directory and wrapper process, and keep the agent’s internal logs so the host event can be tied to the isolated run.

What is the safest way to test my monitoring setup?

Create a disposable file in Downloads, run a controlled read and modification under the same account used by the agent, and confirm the expected audit or FIM records. Remove the test object afterward and record the observed fields, timestamps and retention behavior.
