Start with the platform where you saw the content: look for an AI or synthetic-content label, a creator disclosure, or a details menu that explains how the item was made. For a downloaded image, video, or audio file, check its Content Credentials with a compatible viewer; if you suspect it came from OpenAI tools, OpenAI Verify can check supported signals. A label or credential can provide useful provenance, but no label—or a checker that finds nothing—does not prove content was made by a person.
How can I tell if an image, video, or audio clip was made by AI?
There is no single check that works for every service and file. Use the platform’s own disclosure first, then inspect the original file for provenance information if you can obtain it. Treat the results as evidence about disclosure or file history, not as a verdict about whether the content is true.

Check the place where you saw it
Look around the post, video, or media details for wording such as “AI-generated,” “synthetic,” or a notice that the creator used AI. Some platforms show disclosures near the content; others put relevant information behind an icon or details menu. A creator’s disclosure is a claim by that creator, while a platform-applied label is the platform’s own signal. Neither guarantees that every AI-made item will be identified.
On YouTube, creators are asked to select “Yes” when content is realistic and AI-generated or meaningfully altered. YouTube may show a label based on that disclosure; it may also label content automatically when it detects C2PA metadata or other signals of its own. The presence of a label is useful to notice, but the absence of one is not proof that the video is unaltered or human-made.

On LinkedIn, a C2PA icon can be opened to inspect an assertion about AI use and information such as the app or device, creator, issuer, and issue date. Those details can help you understand what a credential says and who issued it. They do not, by themselves, establish that the post’s account is the ultimate author or that the depicted event happened.
Get the original file if possible
If you want to inspect an image or clip, try to obtain the original file rather than relying on a screenshot or a copy downloaded from a social post. A screenshot, resize, re-save, conversion, or platform upload can remove or change provenance metadata. Google notes that screenshots, resizing, re-saving, some third-party tools, and downloads can break the chain of custody. That means a missing credential may say more about the file’s journey than its original creator.

Check what the evidence actually establishes
A visible label tells you that a platform or creator disclosed something. A signed Content Credential can report origin and edits recorded by its issuer. A provider checker can report whether it detected particular supported signals. None of these checks proves that an image is authentic, that an audio recording captures a real event, or that an entire file is untouched.
Where is the AI label on YouTube or LinkedIn?
On YouTube, look for the disclosure label attached to a video, which may follow a creator’s disclosure or automatic detection. On LinkedIn, open the C2PA icon shown with qualifying content to inspect the available credential details; the icon is not a general-purpose AI detector for every post.
YouTube: creator disclosure and platform detection
YouTube asks creators to select “Yes” for realistic AI-generated or meaningfully altered content. A label can therefore reflect the creator’s disclosure. YouTube may also label content automatically when it detects C2PA metadata or its own signals, so a label is not necessarily evidence that the creator selected the disclosure option.
Use the label as a prompt to consider how the content was made, not as a complete explanation. The label does not establish that the underlying event is real, that the video has not been edited, or that all other AI-made videos would receive the same notice. Platform interfaces and detection coverage can change.

LinkedIn: open the C2PA icon
Where LinkedIn displays a C2PA icon, open it to see the credential’s AI-use assertion and any available details about the app or device, creator, issuer, and issue date. The credential is most useful when it gives you information you can evaluate—for example, who issued the signed record and what edits it reports.
A C2PA icon is not equivalent to a simple “this post is true” badge. It represents information in a credential, and its meaning depends on the signed claims and the source that made them. Not every post will necessarily have one.
Can I check metadata to see whether a file is AI-generated?
Yes, when the file contains compatible provenance data. A C2PA Content Credentials viewer can display signed information about origin, creator, and edit history, but metadata is not guaranteed to be present or preserved, and a credential is not a truth detector.
Inspect Content Credentials
The HHS Office of Research Integrity points readers to a free C2PA Viewer that displays origin, creator, and edit history. Use a compatible viewer with the file itself, preferably the original. If a valid signed credential is present, it is evidence for the claims made by the signer. It does not independently verify those claims or certify that the content depicts reality.

A credential may indicate that an AI tool created or processed the file, but that is different from proving who ultimately authored the work. It also does not show that the depicted event happened, or guarantee that the file has not been edited in a way the credential does not record.
Understand why metadata may be missing
Content Credentials depend on provenance information remaining attached to the file. Screenshots, resizing, re-saving, conversion, third-party processing, and platform handling may disrupt that information. Google specifically warns that screenshots, resizing, re-saving, some third-party tools, and downloads can break the chain of custody.

So a viewer that finds no credential has a narrow result: it did not find usable credential evidence in that copy. It cannot determine whether the original had credentials, whether the file was generated by AI, or whether the file is human-made. If provenance matters, ask for an original or a source that can explain how the copy was produced.
When should I use OpenAI Verify?
Use OpenAI Verify when the file is suspected to come from OpenAI tools and it is one of the supported image or audio types. The tool checks for C2PA and SynthID signals; it does not establish authorship for every file or detect every AI system’s output.

A result of “not detected” means the checker found no supported evidence in the submitted file; it is not proof that a person created the content. As with other provenance checks, an altered or re-exported copy may not retain the relevant signal.
Check the product and file type that the checker supports before relying on a result. Provider-specific tools cover particular signals, products, and formats, and their capabilities can change. A positive result is a provenance signal to investigate, not a judgment about the content’s truth or quality.
What does each kind of AI disclosure check tell me?
The methods differ in visibility, scope, issuer, durability, coverage, and meaning. Use the comparison below to decide what a result can—and cannot—answer.
| Method | Visibility | Scope and issuer | Durability and coverage | What a result means |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Platform label | Usually visible to an ordinary viewer on the service | A platform label may reflect a creator disclosure or the platform’s own detection; behavior differs by service | Applies within that platform’s presentation; it may not travel with a downloaded copy | A disclosure signal, not a guarantee that every AI item was found or that the content is true |
| Creator disclosure | Visible when the platform displays it | The creator asserts that AI was used or that content was altered | May remain with the post on the platform, but it is not necessarily embedded in a downloaded file | Evidence of what the creator disclosed, not independent verification |
| C2PA Content Credentials | Usually requires a compatible viewer or a platform interface that exposes the credential | Signed origin and edit-history claims; inspect the issuer and the actual assertions | Can be lost or disrupted by screenshots, resizing, re-saving, conversions, and some processing; depends on compatible credentials and viewers | Evidence for the signer’s claims about provenance, not proof of truth or ultimate authorship |
| OpenAI Verify | Requires submitting a supported file to the checker | Checks supported images and audio for C2PA and SynthID signals associated with relevant OpenAI outputs | Limited to supported signals, products, and formats; altered copies may not retain evidence | A positive result is a provenance signal; “not detected” is not proof of human authorship |
These methods answer different questions. A platform label can make disclosure easy to see, while a credential may provide more detailed signed provenance. A provider checker can be useful for a suspected source, but its coverage is narrower than a general claim about whether anything was made with AI.

Does no label mean the content is real or human-made?
No. A missing label only means you did not see a disclosure in that place or that a particular check did not find evidence. It does not prove human authorship, authenticity, or that the file has not been manipulated.
Labels can be absent because a creator did not disclose AI use, a platform did not detect it, a file’s provenance data was stripped, or the service does not show that kind of label. A checker may also lack support for the format or signal involved. These are different possibilities, and the absence of a label does not tell you which one applies.
Likewise, a credential or label should not replace verification of the underlying claim. If a clip is being used as evidence of an event, check its context and seek independent corroboration. Provenance can help explain how a file was created or handled; it cannot by itself confirm that the scene occurred as presented.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does the EU AI Act require for AI-generated content?
Article 50 transparency obligations apply from 2 August 2026. The duties differ for providers of generative AI systems and deployers who use AI content, and the rule is specific to the European Union rather than a worldwide labeling standard.

Providers: machine-readable marking
Providers of systems that generate synthetic audio, image, video, or text must make outputs machine-readable and detectable as artificially generated or manipulated. This is a technical marking duty; it is distinct from a visible notice presented to an ordinary viewer.
Deployers: disclose deepfakes and certain public-interest text
Deployers must clearly disclose deepfakes. They must also label AI-generated or manipulated text published to inform the public about matters of public interest unless the text has undergone human review or editorial control and a person holds editorial responsibility.
Best Value
For deepfakes, a visible or audible disclosure is required for the deployer’s disclosure duty. The European Commission’s FAQ says deployers cannot simply rely on a machine-readable marking embedded by the provider. The notice must be clear, distinguishable, accessible, and provided no later than the content’s first exposure.
What the Code of Practice changes—and does not change
The Commission’s Code of Practice is voluntary, but the underlying Article 50 transparency duties are legal obligations. The distinction matters: voluntary guidance about how to meet a duty is not the same as the legal duty itself. Article 50’s requirements apply in the EU from 2 August 2026; do not assume the same requirements apply to a post viewed elsewhere.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow should I interpret a positive or negative check?
A positive result tells you that a specific disclosure, credential, or supported signal was found. A negative result tells you only that the particular check did not find that evidence in the material it examined.
If a check finds a label or credential
- Identify who made the assertion: the creator, platform, credential issuer, or provider checker.
- Read the actual claim and its date rather than treating an icon as a complete explanation.
- Separate provenance from truth: a file can have a recorded AI origin and still depict a real event, or have a credential without proving the event happened.
- Consider whether the visible post and the file you inspected are the same version.
If a check finds nothing
- Confirm that the tool supports the file type and signal you are checking.
- Try to obtain the original rather than a screenshot, converted file, or social-platform copy.
- Check the platform’s disclosure separately; a metadata viewer and a platform label do not inspect the same things.
- Do not describe the content as human-made solely because a label or credential is missing.
What is the most reliable way to assess a suspicious post?
Combine disclosure checks with context checks instead of treating any one signal as decisive. A credential can help explain a file’s provenance, but the claim it accompanies still needs ordinary verification.
- Inspect the post itself. Look for an AI or synthetic-content notice, and open available details or provenance controls.
- Compare the post with the file. If you can access the original media, inspect that copy rather than a screenshot or a re-export.
- Use a compatible provenance tool. Check C2PA credentials for signed origin and edit information, or use a provider-specific checker only when its supported source and format are relevant.
- Read the issuer and claim. Note who made the assertion, what it covers, and whether it describes creation, editing, or both.
- Verify the event separately. Seek independent context or corroboration when the content is presented as evidence of something that happened.
This workflow helps distinguish a disclosure from a verification. It also prevents a common mistake: treating “no detected evidence” as the same as “evidence of no AI use.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot show whether an image was AI-generated?
Usually it cannot establish that on its own. A screenshot may omit the post’s label and can remove or alter the original file’s provenance information, so check the original post and file when possible.
Recommended Free Tools
Can C2PA prove who made an image?
A C2PA credential records signed claims from an issuer, which may include creator or tool information. It is evidence for those claims, not independent proof of the ultimate author.
Does an AI disclosure mean a video is fake?
No. A disclosure indicates AI generation or meaningful alteration under the platform’s labeling approach; it does not determine whether the depicted event occurred or whether the claim accompanying the video is accurate.
Are AI-content labels required on every website?
No universal rule for every website or country is established here. The EU’s Article 50 duties apply in the EU from 2 August 2026 and distinguish provider marking from deployer disclosures.
