No text-only detector can prove who wrote a passage. A score is a statistical signal about the wording in the final file, not a record of who typed it. The defensible way to investigate suspected AI writing is to combine a detector result, if you use one, with dated drafts, version history, research notes, source quality, metadata, and the writer’s ability to explain and reproduce the work. A short supervised writing task or oral explanation can add context, but neither is proof on its own. This approach matters because detectors can disagree, miss AI-written text, and falsely flag human writing—especially when the passage is short, translated, highly formulaic, edited, or paraphrased.
What can an AI-writing detector actually tell you?
An AI detector estimates whether a text resembles patterns found in the examples used to build or tune its model. It does not observe the keyboard, the author, the prompts, or the drafting process. The result therefore describes the text, not authorship. A high score can be consistent with AI assistance, but it can also reflect concise human prose, predictable structure, heavy editing, translation, or a specialized genre. A low score does not establish that a person wrote the passage.

Record the product name, model or version shown in the interface, date, language, genre, word count, and exact file submitted so another reviewer can understand what the number means.
Turnitin explicitly cautions that its AI-writing model “may not always be accurate” and says it should not be the sole basis for adverse action. OpenAI’s educator guidance is even more direct: “Do AI detectors work? In short, not in our experience.” Those statements describe a limitation of the entire category, not a guarantee that every result is useless.

How do you check a text fairly, step by step?
Use the following sequence when a decision could affect a grade, job, publication, or reputation. It preserves evidence before interpretation and keeps a detector result in its proper, limited role.
1. Preserve the original file and record the context
Save an untouched copy of the submitted document. Record when you received it, its file type, language, genre, approximate length, and the software or platform in which it was created. Export or capture the visible metadata without altering the original. If a detector is run later, log its name, model or version, date, settings, and the exact text or file submitted.
Do not silently normalize spelling, remove citations, translate the text, or paste only the most suspicious paragraph before the first analysis. Those changes create a new sample and can change the result. If you must make a derivative copy for testing, keep it separate and describe every change.
2. Inspect the writing process before looking for stylistic stereotypes
Ask what contemporaneous material exists: outlines, brainstorming notes, source lists, annotated readings, calculations, interview notes, earlier drafts, tracked changes, and document version history. Look for a plausible progression from planning to final prose. A series of dated revisions that adds evidence, restructures an argument, and corrects mistakes is stronger process evidence than a single polished file created minutes before submission.
Continuity matters more than whether a draft contains casual language. A writer may legitimately use grammar assistance, translation, accessibility tools, or an editor. The relevant question is what assistance was allowed and whether the person can account for the ideas, sources, and revisions in the final work.
3. Check content and sources, not just surface style
Read the text as an argument. Verify quotations, figures, names, links, and citations. Check whether the sources actually support the claims and whether the claims fit the assignment, the writer’s stated expertise, and the surrounding conversation. Fabricated references, impossible publication dates, abrupt changes in subject knowledge, or explanations that contradict the cited material are useful leads for human review, but none is automatic proof of AI use.
Formulaic writing is not suspicious by itself. Lab reports, legal summaries, news briefs, and carefully edited second-language prose often follow predictable patterns. Conversely, an AI-generated passage can contain original-looking quirks after a person edits it. Evaluate meaning and provenance before making a judgment about style.

4. If needed, run a detector on enough context
Use a detector only after preserving the record and gathering process evidence. Submit the largest coherent document the service supports rather than a single sentence or an isolated “suspicious” paragraph. GPTZero says document-level classification is more accurate than paragraph- or sentence-level classification. Short fragments give the model less information and make a percentage especially unstable.
Save the complete report, including highlighted passages, confidence labels, thresholds, and any warning about language or document length. A percentage is not a calibrated probability that a person or an AI wrote the text. Treat it as one observation to be weighed with the rest of the record.
5. Compare disagreement without forcing a verdict
If a second detector is used, submit the same unaltered sample under comparable settings and record both reports. Disagreement is evidence of uncertainty, not evidence that the higher score is correct. NIST’s GenAI Pilot Study found large performance differences among generators and discriminators: some generators deceived most discriminators, while some discriminators detected almost all generators. Results depend on the particular system, dataset, language, genre, and length.

6. Invite an explanation or a small supervised demonstration
Give the writer a meaningful chance to explain the thesis, sources, calculations, and major revisions. Ask open questions tied to the submitted work: Why did you choose this source? What changed between these two drafts? How did you derive this figure? The person should be allowed to consult permitted notes and correct a misunderstanding.
A short, supervised writing or problem-solving task can reveal whether the writer can reproduce the relevant reasoning under known conditions. It is contextual evidence, not a pass/fail authorship test. Performance can vary because of anxiety, disability, language proficiency, unfamiliar topics, or lack of access to normal tools.
7. Apply the governing policy and document the decision
Education, employment, publishing, and contract settings have different rules about permitted assistance, privacy, appeals, and record retention. Follow the applicable policy and identify who is authorized to decide. Before an adverse action, provide the person with the material being considered, a chance to respond, and a route for human review.

Write down which evidence was considered, what remains uncertain, and why the conclusion follows from the policy. A detector flag alone should not trigger a penalty, dismissal, rejection, or accusation.
Why do AI detectors produce false positives and false negatives?
They classify wording instead of observing authorship
Detection systems infer from features such as predictability, word choice, sentence variation, and structure. Human writers and language models can produce overlapping distributions of those features. The system cannot see whether a sentence came from a person, a model, a translator, a grammar tool, or a human who heavily revised model output. This is why a detector can identify a human passage as AI-like or miss AI-assisted writing.
Short passages contain too little signal
A paragraph may not contain enough variation for a stable estimate. Turnitin reports a higher incidence of false positives in the 0% through 19% score range and marks that range as less reliable. GPTZero likewise says accuracy improves with text length and that document-level analysis is preferable to sentence-level analysis. A low score on a short sample should not be read as exoneration, and a high score on a short sample should not be read as proof.
Language, translation, and genre change the error rate
OpenAI reported that its former classifier performed worse outside English and on code, and that predictable text is difficult to classify. GPTZero says its training data is mostly English prose by adults and warns about machine-generated or highly procedural text. A translated passage, a non-English submission, source code, a formulaic lab method, or a standardized form may therefore fall outside the conditions in which a product performs best.

Ask the vendor what languages and genres it evaluated, what minimum length it recommends, and whether its published figures apply to your document. If those conditions do not match, lower your confidence rather than treating the score as a universal measurement.
Editing and paraphrasing can erase or distort signals
Human revision can make generated text look less machine-like, while a person’s own polished writing can become more predictable after grammar correction or translation. The peer-reviewed 2023 evaluation by Weber-Wulff and colleagues found that 12 public tools, plus Turnitin and PlagiarismCheck, were neither accurate nor reliable overall; paraphrasing and other obfuscation made performance worse. A detector that misses rewritten output is not necessarily malfunctioning—it may simply be seeing a new text distribution.
Models and generators keep changing
Patterns learned from one generation of language models can become obsolete when newer models, prompting methods, or editing workflows appear. NIST’s 2024 GenAI Pilot Study, published in 2025, therefore reports system-specific AUC and Brier-score results rather than one universal accuracy figure. A benchmark result is tied to its generator, discriminator, dataset, and test conditions; it cannot be transferred wholesale to every current document.

How should published accuracy figures be interpreted?
Published numbers describe a particular experiment, not the probability that an individual writer used AI. Keep the population, date, task, and metric attached to every figure.

| OpenAI classifier evaluation, 2023 | 26% true-positive rate for AI-written text; 9% false-positive rate for human-written text in OpenAI’s challenge-set evaluation. | This was a historical result for one classifier. OpenAI discontinued that classifier on July 20, 2023 because of low accuracy. It is not a current benchmark for every detector. |
| Weber-Wulff et al., peer-reviewed study, 2023 | Human passages were often identified above 80%; AI-text identification in many studies was around 50% or slightly higher, with substantial variation by tool and manipulation. | The study’s discussion shows uneven performance across systems and conditions, not a single expected accuracy for a real-world submission. |
| NIST GenAI Pilot Study, evaluated 2024 and published 2025 | Large differences in AUC and Brier-score performance among generators and discriminators; some generators deceived most discriminators, while some discriminators detected almost all generators. | Benchmark by system and dataset. The result does not establish a universal best detector or a universal threshold. |
Also distinguish accuracy from calibration. A system can rank samples reasonably well while its displayed percentage fails to represent a real-world probability. Unless a vendor validates its score on text matching your language, genre, length, and editing conditions, do not translate “80% AI” into “there is an 80% chance this person used AI.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you compare AI-detector tools?
Choose a tool by the decision you need to make and the risks of being wrong, not by the highest marketing percentage. Test competing products on the same controlled samples and record the date and model version.
- Document support: Check minimum and maximum length, file types, and whether the service analyzes a complete document or only pasted text.
- Language and genre coverage: Confirm that the product has evidence for the language, code, discipline, and writing style you are evaluating.
- Paraphrase and bypass behavior: Ask whether the vendor has tested edited, translated, or paraphrased text and how it reports uncertainty.
- Thresholds and calibration: Look for confidence intervals, reliability information, and definitions for labels such as “likely AI.” Do not compare unlabeled percentages as if they were identical.
- Reproducibility: Run the same sample more than once when permitted and note whether the result changes after a model update.
- Privacy and retention: Read whether submitted documents are stored, used for training, shared with reviewers, or available for deletion. Sensitive student, employee, or unpublished material needs particular care.
- Auditability: Prefer reports that preserve the input, date, model version, highlighted passages, and exportable evidence so another reviewer can reproduce the analysis.
- Consequences: The more serious the possible penalty, the more corroboration and human review you need. A classroom feedback tool and an employment investigation should not use the same evidentiary standard.
Vendor case studies and headline percentages are not directly comparable unless the test sets, definitions, and error costs are comparable. A product that performs well on long English essays may be a poor choice for short multilingual answers.
What evidence is stronger than a detector score?
Process evidence is usually more informative because it connects the final text to the person and the time in which it was created. Useful records include dated outlines, incremental drafts, revision history, research notes, local file timestamps, citation managers, interview recordings where lawful, and comments that explain editorial choices. No single item is conclusive: timestamps can be changed, and a writer may draft offline. Their value comes from consistency across independent records.

Check that cited sources exist, quotations match, calculations can be reproduced, and the writer understands the central claims. A confident explanation of a complex argument supports authorship, but a nervous or incomplete explanation is not proof of misconduct. Give the person a fair opportunity, account for language and accessibility needs, and avoid treating fluency as evidence either way.
What should schools, employers, and editors do when a result could harm someone?
Adopt a written procedure before a case arises. State what forms of AI assistance are allowed, what records people should keep, who reviews allegations, how privacy is protected, and how appeals work. Require more than one independent indicator before escalating a case, and prohibit automatic penalties based solely on a detector percentage.
Best Value
Share the relevant report and the specific concerns, not just an unexplained accusation. Let the person respond with drafts, notes, source explanations, or a supervised demonstration. Have a trained human reviewer consider the complete record, document uncertainty, and separate a policy violation from ordinary use of permitted editing or accessibility tools.
If the evidence remains ambiguous, the proportionate response may be a revision, oral defense, additional documentation, or instruction about citation and permitted tools rather than a punitive finding. The standard should reflect the decision’s consequences and the reliability of the available evidence.
What is the practical bottom line?
Use an AI detector, if at all, as a screening signal that prompts questions. Preserve the original, examine the process and sources, analyze a sufficiently long document under documented conditions, treat disagreements as uncertainty, and give the writer a meaningful chance to explain the work. Because current systems have context-dependent errors and no universal accuracy rate, a responsible authorship judgment rests on corroborated evidence and human review—not on a single percentage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a watermark prove that a text came from an AI model?
Not reliably. Watermarking schemes depend on the generated tokens remaining intact, and the UK government’s international scientific report notes that watermarks can be removed. Editing, translation, paraphrasing, or copying only part of a response can also break the signal.
Should I test an entire document or only the suspicious paragraph?
Use the largest coherent document the tool supports, while preserving the original. Paragraph- and sentence-level tests provide less context and are more vulnerable to unstable or misleading results; if you test a fragment for triage, label it as a limited check rather than a document verdict.
How long should I keep drafts and detector reports?
Keep them for the period required by your institution, contract, or applicable privacy rules, and limit access to people who need it. Retain the original file, the submitted version, report date, model version, and the evidence used for the decision so an appeal can be reviewed without rerunning an obsolete model.
What if the writer used an AI tool only for grammar or translation?
Separate the permitted assistance from the authorship question. Ask what tool was used, what settings or passages it changed, and whether the governing policy requires disclosure; then assess the person’s original ideas, sources, and reasoning rather than treating any automated edit as proof of prohibited generation.
