Check the RPG’s Nintendo eShop listing before you buy it, or open its software menu after installation. On the eShop, the decisive entry is Save Data Cloud under Software Details. Nintendo’s product-information pages list the same feature among Nintendo Switch Online features. For an installed game, highlight it on HOME, press + or −, choose Save Data Cloud, and select a user. Backup controls confirm support; Nintendo instead shows an incompatibility message when the title cannot use cloud backup.
This is a game-by-game check. Nintendo says the vast majority of Switch 2 and Switch titles support Save Data Cloud, but that general statement does not prove that a particular RPG does. You also need an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, and the backup is tied to the Nintendo Account that owns the save.

How can I check an RPG before buying it?
The eShop listing is the quickest way to verify support without installing the game. Use the title’s own listing rather than assuming that every RPG, or every game from the same publisher, has the feature.
Check Software Details in the eShop
- Open the RPG’s Nintendo eShop page on a Switch 2, Switch, or Nintendo’s eShop website.
- Scroll to Software Details.
- Look for an entry labeled Save Data Cloud.
- Record whether the entry is listed before comparing editions, bundles, or versions of the game.
If the entry is present, Nintendo identifies that software as supporting its cloud-backup service. If it is absent, do not treat the game as confirmed support; use the installed-software check or Nintendo’s product-information page to verify the exact edition.

Use Nintendo’s product-information page
Nintendo’s product page for a game also lists Save Data Cloud among the Nintendo Switch Online features when the title supports it. This route is useful when you are researching on a phone or computer, or when you want to check several RPGs before deciding which one to purchase.
Check the specific product page for the edition you intend to play. A standard Switch release and a Switch 2 Edition can have different features, so the title and edition should match your purchase.

How do I check an RPG that is already installed?
The HOME menu provides a definitive test for software on your console. If the cloud controls appear after you choose a user, the game supports the service; if Nintendo displays its incompatibility message, it does not.
HOME-menu procedure
- From HOME, highlight the RPG.
- Press − or + to open the software menu.
- Select Save Data Cloud.
- Select the user whose save you want to protect.
- Choose Back Up Save Data when that option is available.
Nintendo’s documented message for unsupported software is: “This software doesn’t support Save Data Cloud backup.” Seeing that message means the title cannot create a Save Data Cloud backup through the normal system feature.
Alternative route through System Settings
- Open System Settings from HOME.
- Choose Data Management.
- Select Save Data Cloud.
- Choose the relevant user.
- Select the RPG and then choose Back Up Save Data.
The settings route is useful when you want to review several games for one user, while the HOME route starts from a single title. Both routes use the same title-specific compatibility check.
What does Save Data Cloud support actually provide?
Save Data Cloud stores a backup associated with the player’s Nintendo Account. A compatible backup can be downloaded on another Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch console where the software is playable, which is the practical reason to check support before replacing a console or moving between systems.

Nintendo’s current guidance says the vast majority of Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch titles support cloud backup. Nintendo does not publish a numeric percentage in that guidance, and “vast majority” is not a guarantee for any individual RPG. The eShop entry, product page, or software-menu test is therefore the evidence that matters for your game.
An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required
Nintendo states: “A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to utilize the Save Data Cloud service.” Without that membership, the service cannot be used to back up or download saves. The requirement applies even when the game itself is listed as compatible.
The user account matters
Backups belong to the Nintendo Account associated with the player’s save. When the console asks you to select a user, choose the account that actually plays the RPG; selecting another user will not identify that player’s cloud backup.
Can I move an RPG save from Switch to Switch 2?
Yes, when the game is compatible with Switch 2 and supports Save Data Cloud. Nintendo allows a compatible Switch game’s save to be backed up and downloaded on either a Switch 2 or an original Switch, provided the software is playable on the destination console and the player uses the associated Nintendo Account.

When the same save works on both consoles
A Switch game that is compatible with Switch 2 can carry its save between the two console generations through cloud backup. The save remains tied to the game and user account, so check both the game’s compatibility and the account selected during the backup or download process.
What happens to Switch 2-only additions?
If the game includes features or content added specifically for Switch 2, those additions are unavailable when the same save is used on the original Switch. The underlying save can be used across compatible consoles, but the older hardware cannot provide Switch 2-only enhancements.
This distinction matters when comparing an original Switch release with a Switch 2 Edition. Cloud-save support answers whether progress can be backed up; it does not make newer hardware features appear on the original console.
How should I compare two Switch RPGs?
Use the same four checks for each title. A short comparison table prevents a broad claim about one game from being mistaken for proof about another.
| Comparison point | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Save Data Cloud listing | Whether the eShop’s Software Details or Nintendo product page lists Save Data Cloud | Establishes title-specific support before purchase |
| Switch 2 edition or enhanced content | Whether the RPG has a Switch 2 Edition or other additions made for the newer console | Identifies content that may not be available when the save returns to an original Switch |
| Cross-console playability | Whether the same software and save are playable on both consoles | Determines whether a backup can be downloaded on the destination system |
| Nintendo Switch Online dependence | Whether the player has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership | The service cannot be used without the membership, even for a compatible title |
Fill in these points from the exact product listings and your own console menu. Do not infer support from the RPG’s genre, release year, publisher, or the fact that another game in the series has cloud backup.
Why is Save Data Cloud missing from my game menu?
A missing or unusable cloud option usually means you need to distinguish between an unsupported title, an account-selection issue, and a service requirement. Work through these checks in order rather than deleting the game or save data.
The RPG may not support the feature
Open the game’s software menu again and select Save Data Cloud. If Nintendo displays “This software doesn’t support Save Data Cloud backup,” the title is incompatible with the service. Confirm the result against the eShop’s Software Details and Nintendo’s product page for the same edition.
The wrong user may be selected
Cloud backups are associated with individual Nintendo Accounts. Return to the user-selection step and choose the profile that created the RPG save. A different profile can make the expected backup appear to be missing because it is not the account connected to that progress.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe membership requirement may not be met
Save Data Cloud requires Nintendo Switch Online. If the game is listed as compatible but backup or download cannot be used, verify that the account selected for the operation has an active membership before troubleshooting the game itself.
The destination console may not support the software
Nintendo says a backup can be downloaded on another Switch 2 or Switch where the software is playable. A cloud backup does not make an incompatible game run on a console, so confirm that the destination system supports the RPG and the relevant edition.

What are the service’s important limits?
There is no local save-data backup fallback
Nintendo currently does not support local save-data backups on Switch 2 or Switch. If an RPG does not support Save Data Cloud, the system’s standard cloud service cannot be substituted with a local copy made through the console menus.
Membership expiry restricts access
If Nintendo Switch Online expires, cloud backups cannot be accessed. Nintendo says access to prior backups returns when the user renews within 180 days. That window is Nintendo’s stated renewal condition; keep the membership status in mind before relying on a cloud copy during a long break from the service.
Cloud backup is not the same as feature parity
Cloud support protects compatible save data, but it does not transfer Switch 2-only content to the original Switch. When planning to alternate consoles, check both the save-data listing and the hardware-specific features of the RPG.
What should I check before buying or changing consoles?
Use this sequence whenever you are evaluating a new RPG, buying a Switch 2 Edition, or preparing to move progress between systems.
- Open the exact game or edition’s Nintendo eShop listing.
- Confirm that Save Data Cloud appears under Software Details.
- Cross-check Nintendo’s product-information page for the same edition.
- Check whether the game has Switch 2-only features that will not be available on an original Switch.
- After installation, run the HOME-menu test and select the user who owns the save.
- Use Back Up Save Data when it is offered.
- Before downloading on another console, confirm that the software is playable there and that the associated Nintendo Account is being used.
These checks separate three different questions: whether Nintendo lists the title as cloud-compatible, whether your account can use the service, and whether the destination console can run the game. Treating them as separate checks avoids assuming that a successful purchase or a Switch 2 upgrade automatically guarantees every kind of cross-console continuity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do all Switch 2 RPGs automatically include cloud saves?
No. Nintendo describes support as covering the vast majority of Switch 2 and Switch titles, but it identifies the feature per software title. The game’s own eShop details, product page, or software-menu result is the reliable answer.
Can two players share one RPG cloud backup?
Backups are associated with the Nintendo Account that owns the save. Each player should select their own user when checking or backing up progress, rather than expecting one profile’s cloud copy to represent another player’s save.
Does a Switch 2 Edition make its save unusable on the original Switch?
Not necessarily. A compatible game’s save can work on both consoles, but Switch 2-only features or content are unavailable when that save is used on the original Switch.
What does Nintendo mean by the 180-day renewal window?
Nintendo says access to prior cloud backups returns when Nintendo Switch Online is renewed within 180 days after expiry. The statement concerns restoring access to existing backups, not creating a local backup on the console.
