Open the game’s Steam store page and find the AI Generated Content Disclosure section. Read the developer’s full statement to see whether generative AI created content that ships with the game, appears on the store page or in marketing, or is generated while you play. A disclosure is the developer’s account, not an independent audit, and a missing label does not prove that no AI was used.
This guide explains exactly what to look for, how to compare two games, and what Steam’s disclosure system can—and cannot—tell you before you purchase.

What does Steam’s AI disclosure tell you?
Steam gathers generative-AI information through its developer Content Survey during the pre-release review process. Valve says the information helps customers understand how a product uses AI, and much of the developer’s disclosure can appear on the game’s public store page.
The current disclosure is aimed at AI-created material that players consume. Valve’s examples include artwork, sound, narrative and localization. It distinguishes between content made ahead of release and content generated during play, because live generation raises different moderation and safety questions.

The disclosure can cover more than files inside the game. A developer may identify AI-generated screenshots, descriptions, artwork or other promotional material shown on the Steam listing or used in marketing. Read the scope carefully instead of assuming that “AI” refers only to gameplay assets.
Valve’s Steamworks documentation also draws a line between player-facing content and production efficiency. Its exact wording is: Efficiency gains through the use of these tools is not the focus of this section.
That means a developer using an AI-assisted coding or editing tool solely to speed up its workflow may not have to describe that use in the player-facing disclosure. A January 2026 clarification likewise reported that workflow-only tools, such as code helpers, are outside the section’s main focus.

How do I find the AI Generated Content Disclosure on a Steam page?
Use the individual store listing for the exact game, not a search snippet, publisher page or community discussion. The wording and placement can vary with the listing, so read the complete developer-authored explanation.
- Open the game’s Steam store page. Go to the listing for the specific edition or product you intend to buy. Different products from the same studio can have different disclosures.
- Search the page for “AI Generated Content Disclosure.” On a desktop browser, use your browser’s find command (usually Ctrl+F on Windows/Linux or Command-F on macOS) and enter “AI Generated Content.” In the Steam client, scroll through the store-page information if the browser find command is unavailable.
- Read every sentence in the disclosure. Do not stop at a short heading or a collapsed preview. The useful details are usually in the developer’s explanation of where and when AI was used.
- Mark the location of the AI use. Note whether the statement refers to content inside the game, material on the store page, marketing assets, or more than one of these.
- Classify the content type. Look for references to art, audio, music, writing or narrative, dialogue, translation or localization, and any other player-consumed material.
- Determine when generation occurs. Establish whether the content was generated during development and shipped in a fixed form, or is produced dynamically while the game runs.
- Check the live-generation safeguards. If the game generates material during play, look for the developer’s explanation of guardrails intended to prevent illegal content. Steam requires developers to describe those safeguards for live generation.
Save or screenshot the statement if it matters to your decision. Store pages can change, and a record of the wording lets you distinguish a later update from what was disclosed when you considered the purchase.
What should I look for in the developer’s wording?
Read the statement as a set of four questions: where is AI used, what does it make, when is it made, and what controls apply? Those questions turn a vague label into information you can compare.

Where is AI used?
A statement may describe AI-generated assets that ship in the game, such as background images, character art, sound effects, music, dialogue or localization. It may separately mention the store page or advertising. Keep those categories separate: promotional artwork generated for a listing does not establish that the playable assets were generated the same way, and a gameplay disclosure does not automatically describe the marketing materials.
What kind of content is involved?
Steam’s examples cover artwork, sound, narrative and localization because those are things players see, hear or read. A developer might identify one category or several. Record the exact scope rather than translating a statement about a few illustrations into a claim that the entire game was made by AI.
When was the content generated?
Pre-generated content is created during development and included in the released build. Everyone receives the same fixed files unless a later patch changes them. Live-generated content is produced while the game is running, potentially in response to player input or changing game state. Live systems can create different text, images, audio or other material for different players, so the developer’s safeguards matter more.
What safeguards are described?
For live generation, look for a concrete explanation of moderation or filtering designed to prevent illegal content. The disclosure may not provide a technical audit, but it should tell you what the developer says it has put in place. An explanation that only says “AI is used” without describing controls leaves an important question unanswered.
How can I compare two Steam games’ AI disclosures?
Use the same checklist for each listing. Comparing like with like prevents a prominent warning about a small marketing asset from being treated as equivalent to a game whose core dialogue or visuals are generated in real time.
| Comparison point | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Location | In-game assets; store-page material; marketing; or multiple locations | Shows whether AI affects what you play, what you see while shopping, or both |
| Content type | Artwork, sound, narrative, localization, or another player-consumed category | Identifies which parts of the experience may contain generated material |
| Generation timing | Pre-generated during development or generated live during play | Separates fixed shipped assets from content that can vary between sessions |
| Live-generation guardrails | The developer’s description of safeguards against illegal content | Provides context for the risks of a system that produces content at runtime |
For each game, copy a short neutral note such as “pre-generated character art and localization” or “live dialogue with described filtering.” Avoid ranking one disclosure as safer or better unless the statements actually provide comparable detail.
Does a missing AI label mean the game uses no AI?
No. A missing, vague or hard-to-find statement supports only the conclusion that you found no clear disclosure on the page. It does not establish that the game contains no AI-generated material.

Steam describes a developer survey and review process, not a public independent audit of every asset or tool used to build a game. The system’s stated focus is player-consumed generated content, while workflow-efficiency uses are not its focus. A developer could therefore have used AI in ways that do not appear in the section, or the page could provide too little detail for you to know the scope.
If the distinction matters to your purchase, look for a direct statement from the developer on its official site, store announcement or support channel. Ask a specific question—such as whether shipped artwork, dialogue or localization was generated—and keep the answer separate from Steam’s own label. Describe your finding accurately as “no disclosure found” or “the disclosure does not explain this point,” never as proof that the game uses no AI.
What should I do when the disclosure is unclear?
Use a short escalation process instead of guessing.
- Recheck the exact listing. Confirm that you are viewing the correct game, not a soundtrack, demo, sequel or bundle page.
- Read the entire section and nearby store-page text. The store page may include the developer’s explanation beyond the heading itself.
- Separate the unresolved issue. Write down whether you cannot tell the location, content type, timing or safeguards. A precise question is more likely to get a useful answer than “Does this use AI?”
- Check an official developer statement. Use the developer’s own announcement or support contact when available. Treat an informal community comment as a lead, not confirmation.
- Decide using the uncertainty you can see. If disclosure detail is essential to you and the developer does not clarify it, postpone the purchase or choose a product whose statement answers your question.
This approach does not turn an unanswered question into a negative verdict. It gives you a documented basis for deciding how much uncertainty you are willing to accept.

Does Steam require developers to disclose AI-generated assets?
Steam collects AI information through its Content Survey and places the customer-facing disclosure within its review and store-page process. The documentation specifically addresses generated content that ships with a game or is consumed by players, including artwork, sound, narrative and localization, and it asks developers to distinguish pre-generated from live-generated material.
For live generation, Steam requires a description of guardrails intended to prevent illegal content. The survey remains part of Steam’s broader content process; completing it does not exempt a game from other rules.
Valve announced the store-page approach on January 10, 2024, writing: We will also include much of your disclosure on the Steam store page for your game, so customers can also understand how the game uses AI.
You can read the announcement, “AI Content on Steam,” from Valve / Steamworks Development.

The practical result for buyers is that the store page is the first place to check, but the page should be treated as a developer-provided explanation rather than an independently verified inventory of every AI-assisted action.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Are AI coding tools covered by the Steam disclosure?
Not necessarily. Valve says efficiency gains from AI-powered tools are not the focus of the disclosure section. The January 2026 clarification reported by Game Developer says tools used only for workflow purposes, including code helpers, generally do not require disclosure under this section.
That distinction is about what Steam asks developers to disclose to customers; it is not a guarantee that a project used no AI during production. If your concern is specifically about shipped art, writing, audio or localization, ask about those outputs rather than inferring from the absence of a statement about development tools.
Can a Steam AI disclosure change after release?
Steam says that after a build and its store page have been approved for release, some survey answers cannot be edited directly. A developer may need to contact Steam Support to change them. This means the wording you see can reflect a particular release state, and a later update may require a revised explanation or support intervention.
If a major content update introduces live generation or adds generated assets, check the store page again instead of relying on an old screenshot. Record the date of any statement you use when making a purchase decision.

What are the limits of using the disclosure as a buying signal?
The disclosure answers a narrow transparency question: what the developer says about generative AI in player-facing or store-facing content. It does not measure artistic quality, performance, originality, accessibility or value for money.
- It is not an independent audit. Steam’s public materials describe a survey and review process, not a third-party examination of every file or production step.
- It is not a promise of zero AI. Missing information cannot prove that no AI was used, especially for workflow tools outside the section’s focus.
- It is not a legal certification. Steam says survey completion does not exempt a product from its content rules.
- It can be incomplete for your particular concern. A statement might identify generated marketing art but say nothing about localization, or mention live dialogue without explaining the safeguards in detail.
- It can change with updates. Revisit the page when a game adds substantial content or changes its generation system.
Use the label as one documented input alongside the developer’s own explanations and your tolerance for uncertainty. The most defensible conclusion is always limited to what the wording actually establishes.

What is the quickest pre-purchase checklist?
Before clicking the purchase button, run this five-point check:
- Open the exact Steam store page.
- Find and read the full AI Generated Content Disclosure.
- Record the location and type of generated content.
- Mark it as pre-generated or live-generated, and note any live-generation safeguards.
- If the section is absent or unclear, seek a direct developer statement and record the result as “no disclosure found” rather than “no AI.”
That process takes only a few minutes and gives you a more precise answer than relying on a badge, a user review or a marketing phrase.

Can I check a game’s AI disclosure before it releases?
Steam uses the developer Content Survey during pre-release review, but the customer-facing wording is encountered on the store listing. If the public page has not yet published a disclosure, you may need to wait for the listing to be updated or ask the developer directly.
Does Steam’s disclosure identify which specific files were made by AI?
Usually, the statement describes categories such as art, sound, narrative or localization rather than naming every asset. Treat category-level wording as a scope description, not an itemized asset list.
Should I trust a developer’s claim that no AI was used?
It is a statement of the developer’s position, not an independent audit. You can record it as the developer’s answer, while recognizing that Steam’s public materials do not establish a complete third-party verification process.
Where can I read Steam’s official rules for the disclosure?
Valve’s Steamworks Content Survey documentation is at partner.steamgames.com/doc/gettingstarted/contentsurvey. Valve’s January 10, 2024 announcement is at steamcommunity.com/groups/steamworks/announcements/detail/3862463747997849619.
