Open the game’s own Steam store page and look for the AI Generated Content Disclosure. Read the developer’s complete statement, then record whether it describes content made with AI during development, content generated while the game runs, promotional material, or another named use. Save the exact wording and the date you checked it.
A missing disclosure does not prove that no AI was used. It means no AI use was disclosed in that section, and Valve’s January 2026 clarification separates content-generation disclosures from some AI-powered workflow tools. Treat the store statement as the developer’s declared scope, not as an independent audit of every asset or production step.

The fastest reliable check is the game’s individual Steam store page, not a search result, review, screenshot, or third-party list. Steam places the relevant statement under the heading AI Generated Content Disclosure when the developer has supplied one.
- Open the game’s own store page. Use the Steam desktop app or a browser and verify that the page is for the exact edition, demo, or release you are investigating.
- Find the disclosure section. On a long page, use your browser’s find command and search for
AIorGenerated. Look specifically for the heading AI Generated Content Disclosure, rather than assuming that a general description of the game answers the question. - Read the complete statement. Do not rely on a truncated preview, a user comment, or a sentence copied into a forum. The qualification may explain whether AI was used for artwork, audio, text, other assets, promotional material, or generation during play.
- Classify what it says. Note what was generated, where it appears, and when generation occurs. “AI-assisted promotional art” is a narrower claim than “AI-generated game assets,” while a live dialogue system is different from an image made once during development.
- Save the wording and the date. Copy the statement into your notes or save a screenshot or PDF, and write down the date and region or edition you checked. Store pages can be edited, so a dated record prevents a later wording change from being mistaken for the original disclosure.
- Check first-party corroboration when the claim matters. For a purchase decision, moderation concern, journalism, or a dispute, compare the store statement with an attributable developer or publisher announcement, FAQ, update note, or other first-party material. Describe only what those sources establish.
A careful conclusion might read: “On 25 October 2026, the Steam store page disclosed AI-assisted promotional artwork; it did not describe AI-generated in-game assets or runtime generation.” That wording reports the evidence without expanding a narrow statement into a claim about the entire game.

What does Steam’s AI disclosure actually cover?
Valve’s January 2024 Steamworks announcement divided AI use into two broad categories. Pre-generated content is made with AI tools during development and then included in the shipped game or its presentation. Live-generated content is produced with AI tools while the game is running. Valve said much of this information would appear on the Steam store page so customers could understand how a title uses AI, and it described a player-reporting system for illegal content encountered in games with live-generated AI.
| Category | When generation occurs | What it can include | How to read the statement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-generated content | During development, before the player runs the game | In-game artwork, audio, text, other shipped assets, or promotional material if the developer names it | The disclosure concerns material created with AI and then included or published; it does not automatically cover every asset in the project. |
| Live-generated content | While the game is running | Text, dialogue, images, audio, or other content generated in response to play, if the developer describes those surfaces | Look for an explanation of the runtime feature and where players encounter its output. |
| AI-powered workflow tools | During production as assistance for people making the game | Examples include code helpers and other productivity tools | The January 2026 clarification reported by Game Developer distinguishes these tools from the content-generation categories in the disclosure form. Do not treat the disclosure as a complete inventory of every software tool a studio used. |
The category alone is not enough. The named content type and location matter just as much. A statement about a store banner or trailer does not establish that AI-generated art appears in the game itself. Conversely, a runtime disclosure may describe a small optional feature rather than the game’s principal content.
How do I tell whether AI was used for game assets, marketing, or gameplay?
Read the nouns and locations in the developer’s wording. A useful note separates what was generated from where it appears and when the generation happens.
In-game artwork and other shipped assets
If the statement names character illustrations, textures, icons, backgrounds, item descriptions, voice lines, music, or another asset used in the playable build, record that specific asset type. Do not silently broaden “some concept art” into “the game was made with AI.” The disclosure may cover one class of asset while leaving other parts of the production unaddressed.
Promotional and store-page material
Some statements refer to key art, screenshots, trailers, advertisements, or other marketing material. That is still a meaningful disclosure, but it answers a different question from whether generated material ships in the game. Keep promotional use and in-game use as separate entries in your notes.
Runtime generation
Look for language indicating that the system creates content after launch, during a session, or in response to a player’s input. Note the feature’s surface—such as dialogue, images, music, or quests—and whether the statement describes safeguards or reporting. Runtime generation can change what an individual player sees, so a fixed screenshot cannot represent every possible output.

Unspecified “AI-assisted” wording
“AI-assisted” is not a complete classification by itself. If the page does not say what was assisted, where the result appears, or whether generation continues during play, report the wording as given and mark the scope as unclear instead of guessing which assets or tools were involved.
Does a game with no AI disclosure mean no AI was used?
No. An empty or missing disclosure means that you did not find a relevant statement in that Steam section; it is not proof that no AI tools were used anywhere in development.
There are two important reasons. First, the disclosure is a developer-provided statement, not an independent inspection of every file, contractor, production step, or marketing asset. Second, Valve’s January 2026 clarification distinguishes AI used to generate content for a game or during gameplay from AI-powered workflow tools such as code helpers. A studio may use a workflow tool without that use being the subject of the content-generation disclosure.
Use precise language when the section is absent or vague: “No AI-generated content was disclosed on the Steam page checked on [date].” Do not write “The game uses no AI” unless you have a separate, attributable basis for that stronger conclusion.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat evidence is strong enough to confirm AI-generated content?
Prefer a direct store-page disclosure or an attributable statement from the developer or publisher. Those sources can identify the content, location, and timing of the use. A first-party update note or FAQ can add context, especially if the store wording is brief.

- Strongest for the store-page question: the exact text under AI Generated Content Disclosure, saved with the date checked.
- Useful corroboration: a named developer or publisher announcement, FAQ, or update note that describes the same use.
- Leads that require confirmation: visual oddities, a synthetic-sounding voice, unusual typography, metadata, community discussion, or an automated detector result.
- Not proof on their own: a third-party index, a screenshot of one asset, or a conclusion drawn from the absence of a disclosure.
Visual impressions can justify a closer look, but they cannot establish which tool was used, whether a human substantially edited the result, or whether the material shipped in the game. Automated detectors can also produce false positives and false negatives. If you cannot corroborate the suspicion, label it unconfirmed and state exactly what you checked.
How should I compare the AI disclosures for two Steam games?
A yes-or-no label hides important differences. Compare the statements along the same five axes so that a narrow marketing disclosure is not treated as equivalent to a live gameplay system.
| Comparison axis | Question to ask | Why it changes the meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Generation timing | Was the material made during development, or generated while the game runs? | Pre-generated assets are fixed for the release; live-generated output can vary by session and player input. |
| Content type | Does the statement name artwork, audio, text, video, code, or another form of content? | Different content types affect what a player will encounter and what can be independently checked. |
| Surface or location | Is the material in the game, on the store page, in a trailer, or in another promotional channel? | A marketing asset does not establish that generated content appears in the playable build. |
| Specificity | Does the developer explain the feature and its limits, or use only a broad label? | Specific wording supports a narrower, more defensible conclusion. |
| Date and corroboration | When did you check the page, and is there a matching first-party explanation? | A dated record accounts for later edits and makes the comparison reproducible. |
For example, “Game A discloses AI-generated key art for its store page” and “Game B discloses live-generated dialogue during play” are both AI disclosures, but they describe materially different player experiences. Keep the two descriptions separate rather than ranking them under one broad “uses AI” label.
What should I do if the disclosure is unclear or changes?
Preserve the exact wording you saw and identify the page and date. If the statement uses a general term such as “AI-assisted content” without naming the asset or surface, quote that wording and say that the scope is unclear.
For a consequential claim, look for a dated developer or publisher explanation that clarifies the ambiguity. If the first-party sources conflict, present the conflict rather than selecting the version that fits a preferred conclusion. A later store-page edit does not prove that an earlier statement was false; it shows that the publicly available wording changed.

When reporting your result, separate confirmed facts from open questions. A useful format is:
- Confirmed: the exact disclosure and the content or feature it names.
- Not established: asset types, locations, or runtime behavior the statement does not mention.
- Checked on: the date, edition, and store page used.
- Corroboration: any attributable first-party announcement that supports or limits the statement.
Can a third-party index tell me which Steam games use AI?
It can help you locate examples or find store pages worth checking, but it is not a census of AI use across Steam. The index methodology described in the available material says its tracked disclosures do not measure all Steam AI use, and that missing or unclear statements cannot establish whether a game uses AI.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Use an index as a discovery aid, then open the individual game’s Steam page and verify the wording yourself. If the index’s label is broader than the developer’s statement, rely on the narrower, directly attributable description.
What mistakes should I avoid when checking a game?
- Searching only the game’s community hub: the disclosure belongs on the individual store page, so forum discussion is secondary evidence.
- Reading only a snippet: a shortened preview can omit whether the use is pre-generated, live-generated, promotional, or in-game.
- Equating any AI use with generated content: workflow assistance and shipped or runtime content are distinct under the January 2026 clarification.
- Assuming one named asset represents the whole game: a disclosure about a trailer, icon set, or concept image does not automatically cover every other asset.
- Turning suspicion into a fact: visual artifacts and detector scores are prompts for verification, not proof of a production history.
- Ignoring the date: store text can change, so an undated claim is difficult to audit later.
- Using a population claim from an index: tracked entries are not an estimate of all AI use on Steam.
How should I phrase the final result?
Match the strength of your wording to the evidence. If the page gives a precise statement, identify the named content and its location. If it gives only a broad statement, preserve that limitation. If nothing appears, report the absence of a disclosure rather than declaring that no AI was used.
Examples:
- “The store page discloses pre-generated AI artwork used in the game’s item icons.”
- “The page discloses AI-assisted promotional images, but does not say that generated assets appear in gameplay.”
- “The page describes a live-generated dialogue feature that operates during play.”
- “No AI-generated content was disclosed in the section checked on 25 October 2026; that does not establish that no AI workflow tools were used.”
- “A third-party listing flags the title, but the individual store-page wording was absent or unclear, so the use remains unconfirmed.”
This approach gives readers the information they need without converting a limited disclosure into a sweeping claim about the game or its developers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Steam disclosure name the exact AI model or service used?
Only if the developer chooses to include that detail in its statement. If the page names the output but not the model, record the output and scope without guessing which service produced it.
Is an AI disclosure a judgment about a game’s quality or originality?
No. It is a description of declared AI use, not a rating of quality, authorship, legality, or artistic merit. Those questions require separate evidence and criteria.
What if live-generated AI produces illegal content in a game?
Valve’s January 2024 Steamworks announcement described a player-reporting system for illegal content encountered in games with live-generated AI. The store disclosure tells you that the runtime category was declared; it does not by itself document how a particular incident was handled.
Why should I keep a screenshot or copy of the wording?
A dated copy preserves the version you actually saw if the store page is later edited. It also lets another person distinguish the developer’s original scope from a paraphrase or a later summary.
