The reliable way to find out is to test the device with your home network still running but its internet (WAN) connection deliberately cut. First record the exact model, firmware, hub and app. Then read the manual and privacy documentation for local-control, account, remote-access and offline-operation language. During the outage, test the device itself, the app while you are at home, automations, status reporting and setup. Restore internet and test remote access, voice integrations, firmware updates, notifications, diagnostics and vendor-only features separately. A device can keep basic switching local while still depending on the manufacturer’s cloud for away-from-home control or advanced functions.

What does “depends on the manufacturer’s cloud” actually mean?

Cloud dependence is not a single yes-or-no property. It describes where a particular function is processed and where the device sends its data. A light may respond to its physical switch and to a local hub during an internet outage, yet lose remote control, push notifications or a vendor’s energy dashboard. Another product may require a cloud account even for initial setup, while a third can be commissioned and operated entirely on the home network.

Judge each capability separately. The useful questions are:

  • Can a command reach the device when the WAN link is down but the LAN is powered?
  • Do schedules and automations continue to run, and where are they executed?
  • Can your local controller discover the device and read its current state?
  • What happens to away-from-home access, voice-assistant links and notifications?
  • Is an account required for setup, and does the app insist on internet access?
  • Which data leaves the home, and which functions use a vendor server?
  • Can firmware updates, diagnostics and proprietary features work offline?

This feature-by-feature view prevents a common mistake: calling a product “local” because one button works without internet, or calling it “cloud-only” because its remote app stops working.

How should I identify the exact device before testing?

Write down the complete setup before changing the network. Cloud behavior can vary by model, hardware revision, firmware release, regional edition, hub and app version.

Record the hardware and software

  • Model number and hardware revision printed on the device or box.
  • Current firmware version and the date it was last updated.
  • The hub, bridge or controller used, including its firmware.
  • The phone or tablet app name and version, plus the operating system.
  • The wireless path: Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread, Matter or another radio.
  • Whether the device is paired directly to the vendor app, to a local hub, or to more than one ecosystem.

Capture a working baseline

With internet available, operate every function you intend to rely on. Note response time, status accuracy, schedules, scenes, sensors, notifications and voice commands. Take screenshots of setup pages and account requirements. A baseline lets you distinguish an offline limitation from an unrelated pairing or power problem.

Where do manuals and privacy pages reveal cloud requirements?

Search the model’s manual, network-requirements page, setup guide, terms and privacy documentation. Look for explicit wording rather than assuming that a Wi-Fi radio implies cloud operation.

Terms that indicate local operation

  • “Local control,” “LAN control,” “works without internet,” or “offline operation.”
  • A documented local API, local web interface or hub-to-device protocol.
  • Instructions that place automations on a hub or controller in the home.
  • A statement that in-home commands remain on Wi-Fi or Thread.

Terms that indicate a cloud dependency

  • “Internet connection required,” “cloud account required” or “server connection required.”
  • Remote access described as passing through the company’s servers.
  • Setup that cannot proceed until the app signs in or contacts a service.
  • Features described as cloud analytics, cloud recording, remote management or vendor services.

Look for hybrid wording

Manufacturers may state that basic commands are local while firmware delivery, telemetry, diagnostics, voice integration or advanced scenes use cloud services. Treat each sentence as applying only to the named function. Privacy notices can also identify data categories, destinations and retention, but they do not by themselves prove whether a switch command is local; confirm that with the outage test.

How do I run a controlled internet-outage test?

Keep power and the home LAN operating, and interrupt only the WAN connection. Pausing internet access at the router is safer and more informative than unplugging the device or turning off Wi-Fi.

  1. Prepare a test sheet. Create rows for physical controls, local app control, discovery, status, automations, remote access, voice control, notifications, setup, updates, diagnostics and vendor-specific features.
  2. Confirm normal operation. Run each row while internet is available and record the expected result.
  3. Isolate the WAN. Use the router’s internet-pause or WAN-disable control. Do not shut down the LAN, the hub, access points or the device itself. If your router cannot pause WAN access, disconnect its modem or uplink while leaving the local network powered.
  4. Test the device in the home. Press physical buttons, use the device’s own controls and observe whether the expected action occurs.
  5. Test local app control. While your phone is connected to the same home LAN, open the app, refresh status and issue commands. Record whether the app loads, shows stale data or reports that it cannot connect.
  6. Test discovery and state. Check whether the local hub still sees the device, receives sensor changes and reflects them promptly.
  7. Wait through scheduled events. Allow at least one routine or schedule to reach its trigger time. Record whether it runs, runs late, or fails.
  8. Test setup only if needed. Do not factory-reset a working device merely for this experiment. If you have a spare or are commissioning a new unit, observe whether pairing can complete without WAN access.
  9. Restore WAN access. Re-enable the router’s internet connection and wait for the device and hub to reconnect.
  10. Test cloud-backed functions separately. From outside the home, try remote control, voice-assistant links and notifications. Then check firmware-update prompts, diagnostics, history dashboards and other vendor-specific features.

Record the exact symptom, not just “failed.” “Physical button worked; local app showed stale status; remote command timed out” identifies a hybrid design and points to different remedies than “device disappeared from the LAN.”

What should I record for each capability?

A consistent matrix makes devices and firmware versions comparable without reducing the result to one label.

Capability Internet available WAN disconnected, LAN powered What the result tells you
On-device or physical control Record normal response Test switches, buttons and sensors Shows whether the device can perform its basic function independently of an app.
In-home app command Record command and status time Use the app from the same LAN Success suggests a local path; a failure may indicate cloud-only app routing or an app that cannot operate offline.
Local discovery and status Check hub and sensor state Refresh state and trigger a sensor Shows whether the hub can communicate locally and receive events.
Automation and schedules Run a routine Let a trigger occur during the outage Identifies whether logic runs on the device, a local hub or a remote service.
Remote access Test from a separate network Repeat while the home WAN is down Remote access normally needs a path through an internet service; failure during WAN loss is expected for cloud-mediated access.
Account and setup Observe sign-in and pairing Attempt only with a new or spare unit Shows whether activation depends on a vendor account or server.
Privacy and data path Review documented transfers Observe which functions stop Separates local command traffic from telemetry, history and other uploads.
Firmware updates Check for and schedule an update Check whether update discovery is available Updates are commonly delivered through cloud services even when control is local.
Diagnostics and vendor features Open logs, dashboards and proprietary tools Repeat locally where possible Identifies functions that are not part of the local control path.

How do I interpret the most common results?

Everything important keeps working

If physical controls, local app commands, status and automations continue on the isolated LAN, the core path is local. That does not prove that setup, updates, remote access, notifications or diagnostics are independent; classify those separately.

Physical controls work but the app fails

The device itself may be autonomous while the app routes every command through the manufacturer’s servers. Look for a local hub, local API or alternate controller before concluding that the hardware is cloud-only.

The app works at home but schedules stop

In-home control is local, but the schedule may be stored in the vendor cloud. Recheck whether the routine is attached to a local hub or to an online account, and test a routine that is explicitly hosted by your local controller.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Automations continue but status is stale

A device or hub can execute an action locally while a cloud service supplies history, timestamps or state synchronization. Compare the device’s physical result with the app’s displayed state and record the distinction.

The device vanishes from a local hub

Verify that the hub and device remain on the same LAN or radio network and that only WAN access was interrupted. If local discovery truly depends on a vendor server, the product is not locally reachable through that path during an outage.

Which architectures can keep working without internet?

The communication path matters more than the marketing label. A device can use several paths at once, so identify the one serving each function.

Vendor-cloud-only devices

These devices send commands to a manufacturer service and receive them back over the internet. When WAN access is unavailable, the vendor app, remote control and usually cloud-hosted routines cannot reach the device. Physical controls may still work because they do not require network communication.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Local-LAN devices

A local-LAN design accepts commands from devices on the home network. An app or controller can continue operating during an internet outage if it supports offline behavior and the LAN remains powered. Remote access still requires an external connection unless you provide another secure path into the home.

Local hubs using Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread or ESPHome

Home Assistant states that it runs on hardware in your home and that devices using Zigbee, Z-Wave, Matter, Thread and ESPHome can continue working without internet. It also notes that a device that talks only to a vendor cloud cannot be reached when internet access is down. A local hub therefore changes the test: test the hub’s local automations and radio links, not just the vendor app. Home Assistant describes Home Assistant Green as a plug-and-play hub and Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 as an accessory for Zigbee, Thread and Matter; compatibility still depends on the exact device and integration.

Hybrid products

Hybrid devices combine local commands with cloud services for remote access, voice assistants, updates, telemetry, diagnostics, history or proprietary features. This is a normal architecture, not a testing failure. Document which side of the split each feature occupies.

Is Matter actually cloud-free?

No. Matter is a local connectivity technology, not a promise that a manufacturer uses no cloud. Google’s Matter guidance says in-home commands are carried out locally over Wi-Fi or Thread, while commands issued away from home connect through the cloud. The Connectivity Standards Alliance likewise describes Matter as local connectivity while allowing manufacturers to retain cloud connectivity for remote access and advanced capabilities. AWS documents that Matter does not require endpoint internet access, while cloud services are commonly added for over-the-air updates, telemetry, diagnostics, remote management and proprietary vendor features.

  • Wide Device Compatibility: Connect compatible smart devices from Aeotec and many other brands to build a unified system for lighting, voice control, energy management, and climate settings

Test a Matter product in two layers. First, disconnect WAN access and use the Matter controller on the home network; this checks local commissioning, commands, discovery and automations supported by that controller. Second, restore internet and test remote control, account-linked features, updates and vendor services. A Matter logo answers how devices can communicate locally; it does not answer which optional services the manufacturer requires.

How can I tell whether automations are local?

Do not infer execution location from where a routine is configured. An app can edit a routine locally while saving it to a cloud account, or it can configure a rule that a local hub executes.

Use a trigger that cannot be mistaken

Create a simple routine with one clear trigger and one visible action, such as a contact sensor changing a light. Run it once online, then repeat it during the WAN outage. Check the physical result and the app’s history independently.

Test delayed and conditional logic

Cloud dependencies often appear in delays, schedules, geofencing, scenes involving several brands and conditions that use online data. Test a delayed action and a multi-device rule separately. A basic local trigger may pass while a more complex routine fails.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check where the rule is stored

Look for wording such as “runs on hub,” “local execution,” “cloud routine” or “server-side automation.” If documentation is silent, the outage result is your evidence; label the result by firmware and controller version because it can change after an update.

What happens to privacy when a device uses the cloud?

Cloud dependence can affect the data path even when control feels local. A local command may stay on the LAN while usage history, diagnostic logs, voice transcripts, camera events or device metadata are uploaded. Read the privacy documentation for collection, destinations, retention and account sharing, then compare it with the functions that stopped during the outage.

Do not treat an internet outage as a privacy audit. A service may queue data and upload it after reconnection, so inspect the policy and any available network or account controls. If minimizing external data is a priority, choose a controller and integration that document local processing, and disable optional cloud features where the product permits it.

Which features usually need the internet even on a local device?

  • Away-from-home control: Your phone outside the home needs an internet path to reach the home or a relay service.
  • Voice-assistant links: Voice platforms commonly use cloud services to authenticate, interpret and route commands.
  • Firmware updates: Update files and release checks are commonly delivered by vendor servers.
  • Push notifications: A notification service may be required even if the sensor and automation run locally.
  • Diagnostics and support tools: Remote logs, health checks and support sessions generally contact a vendor service.
  • Vendor-specific features: Cloud history, analytics, proprietary scenes and remote management may stop while basic control continues.

Test these after restoring WAN access so that a failed cloud feature is not confused with a local-control failure. Record whether the feature resumes automatically or requires signing in, restarting the app or rebooting the device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if the device fails the offline test?

Confirm that only the WAN is down

Check that the router, access points, hub and device still have power and valid local addresses. A whole-LAN outage produces the same symptoms as a cloud dependency but tells you nothing about the product’s architecture.

Try the vendor’s documented local mode

Some products require a setting such as local control, LAN mode or a locally hosted integration. Enable only options documented for your exact model and firmware; do not assume that a similarly named product supports them.

Separate app failure from device failure

If the physical control works, the hardware is not necessarily offline. Check whether a local hub, web interface or alternate controller can operate it. If no local path exists, plan for the vendor service to be unavailable during WAN outages.

Recover safely

Restore internet, wait for the device to reconnect, and verify one function at a time. Avoid factory-resetting a device while the WAN is disabled: cloud activation or credentials may be required to complete setup. If a firmware update was interrupted, follow the manufacturer’s recovery procedure rather than repeatedly power-cycling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should I document the result for future changes?

Save the model, firmware, hub, app version, date and router test method with your notes. Keep a copy of the completed capability matrix and the relevant manual or privacy-page wording. Re-test after a firmware, hub or app update, because a vendor can move a function between local and cloud execution without changing the product name.

For a household continuity plan, mark each device with three labels: “works locally,” “works locally with hub,” or “cloud required for this function.” Add the exact functions that fail and the recovery action. This is more useful than a single “offline capable” badge when someone needs lights, locks, heating or alarms to operate during an outage.

What is the practical decision rule?

Keep a device if its failure mode matches your needs. If you only need physical operation and occasional local control, a hybrid product may be acceptable. If you need routines to continue through an internet outage, require a controller and integrations that execute locally, then verify them with the WAN-disconnect test. If you need remote access, accept that an external connection and usually a cloud or secure remote gateway are part of that feature.

The strongest evidence is a repeatable test on your exact hardware and software: LAN powered, WAN disabled, each capability checked, then cloud functions checked again after reconnection. That procedure turns vague “works offline” claims into a precise map of what will and will not work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I test cloud dependence without disrupting the whole household?

Use a spare device or schedule a short maintenance window, then pause WAN access at the router rather than shutting down Wi-Fi. Test one device and one automation at a time, and warn anyone who relies on remote alarms or cameras before starting.

Will a device remember commands made while the internet is down?

There is no universal rule. Some local controllers queue events, while cloud-mediated apps may discard commands or show stale state; check the device’s history and physical result after reconnection instead of assuming synchronization.

Does a local hub remove the need for a manufacturer account?

Not necessarily. A hub can provide a local operating path after setup, but the device may still require an account for activation, firmware delivery or proprietary services. Verify account requirements for the exact model before buying or resetting it.

How often should I repeat an offline test?

Repeat it after firmware, hub or app changes and whenever the manufacturer adds a major feature. Cloud routing and automation execution can change without a new product name, so keep the original test notes for comparison.
