A Ryzen AI badge alone does not prove that a laptop is a Copilot+ PC. To check compatibility, identify the exact processor, verify that its neural processing unit (NPU) delivers at least 40 TOPS, confirm 16 GB or more of DDR5 or LPDDR5 memory and at least 256 GB of SSD or UFS storage, then verify Windows 11, current updates, and an explicit Copilot+ PC designation for the complete laptop configuration.
Windows can confirm that it detects an NPU, but only the laptop’s specification sheet can establish its TOPS rating. Use the checks below before buying or assuming that a particular Copilot+ experience will be available.

What does a Ryzen AI laptop need to qualify as a Copilot+ PC?
Microsoft’s current Copilot+ PC guidance centers on the complete system, not just the processor name. The key hardware threshold is an NPU rated at 40+ TOPS, alongside minimum memory and storage requirements. Microsoft specifically lists AMD Ryzen AI 300 and 400 series processors among supported processor families, but a model label by itself is not a certification.

Microsoft’s developer guidance says, “Many of the new Windows AI features require an NPU with the ability to run at 40+ TOPS.” That statement describes the NPU capability needed by many features; it does not mean that every device with a Ryzen AI processor automatically receives every feature. Microsoft also notes that some Copilot+ experiences require software updates and that availability can vary by device, region, and time.

How do I check an existing Ryzen AI laptop in Windows 11?
Start with the information Windows reports, then confirm the parts Windows cannot fully characterize. The following sequence avoids treating a detected NPU or a familiar processor family as proof of eligibility.
1. Record the exact processor, memory, and Windows version
Open Settings > System > About. Record the processor name exactly as shown, including its Ryzen AI series and any model number, along with installed RAM and the Windows edition and version.

Do not shorten the processor name to “Ryzen AI.” Two laptops can use the same broad family while differing in NPU rating, memory configuration, storage, or software designation. Keep the exact text so you can match it to the manufacturer’s specification page later.
The About page’s memory figure is useful for a first check, but it may not show the memory type. The Copilot+ guidance calls for DDR5 or LPDDR5, so use the laptop’s official specification for that detail when Windows does not identify it.
2. Look for the NPU in Task Manager
Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager, select Performance, and look for an NPU panel or graph. Its presence means Windows detects a neural processor in the system.
This is a detection check, not a performance certification. Task Manager’s NPU graph does not, by itself, prove that the unit reaches 40 TOPS. If the graph is present, continue to the exact model specification; if it is absent, install pending Windows updates, restart, and check again before drawing a conclusion. A missing graph should not be “fixed” by assuming the processor’s marketing name is sufficient.

3. Find the exact OEM specification
Search the laptop manufacturer’s support or product page using the full model identifier and processor configuration recorded in step one. Laptop families often ship in several configurations, so match the page to the exact memory and storage option as well as the processor.
Look for an NPU performance figure expressed in TOPS. Record the number and the unit exactly. A page that lists only “Ryzen AI” or “AI acceleration” without an NPU TOPS value does not establish the 40+ TOPS threshold. If the page offers a downloadable specification sheet, use the sheet for the precise configuration rather than a retailer headline that may combine several variants.
4. Check the system drive capacity
Open Settings > System > Storage to see the installed drive and its capacity, or use Task Manager > Performance and select the disk. The system must provide at least 256 GB of SSD or UFS storage under Microsoft’s requirements.
Use the hardware specification to confirm whether the drive is an SSD or UFS device when Windows labels it generically. The requirement is about the installed storage type and capacity, not the amount of free space remaining after your files and applications are installed. A laptop advertised with several storage options must be checked at the capacity you intend to buy.
5. Install Windows updates and restart
Go to Settings > Windows Update, install all available updates, and restart the laptop. Microsoft says that some Copilot+ experiences depend on updates, so an unpatched installation may not show the same capabilities as a fully updated one.
After restarting, revisit Windows Update to make sure no additional restart is required. Update availability and feature rollout can differ by device, region, and time; an update completing successfully does not override a hardware shortfall such as an NPU below 40 TOPS or less than 16 GB of qualifying memory.

6. Look for an explicit Copilot+ PC designation
Finally, check the manufacturer’s listing and Microsoft’s listing, if one exists, for the exact laptop configuration. An explicit Copilot+ PC label is useful confirmation that the vendor and Microsoft identify that complete system as part of the platform.
Treat the designation as configuration-specific. The same chassis may be sold with a different processor, 8 GB of memory, or a smaller drive, and that variant should not inherit the label from a better-equipped version.
Which Ryzen AI processors should I investigate first?
AMD Ryzen AI 300 and 400 series processors are the most direct AMD search path because Microsoft includes those families in its Copilot+ PC requirements guidance. That is a starting point for research, not an automatic pass.
Write down the complete processor string from Windows or the product sheet. Then match that string to the NPU TOPS figure for the laptop, not merely to a general AMD family page. The laptop maker can configure the same processor family with different memory, storage, firmware, or Windows editions, and those differences affect whether the finished product meets the complete requirements.
If a listing says only “Ryzen AI laptop” and omits the exact processor or NPU figure, regard compatibility as unconfirmed. Ask the seller or consult the manufacturer’s documentation before relying on Copilot+ features. Do not infer the NPU rating from the number of CPU cores, the laptop’s price, or the presence of an “AI” logo; none of those details establishes TOPS.
How can I compare two Ryzen AI laptops for Copilot+ support?
First eliminate any configuration that fails the processor, NPU, memory, storage, or Windows checks. Only then compare display, battery, ports, weight, and other buying factors. A polished screen or longer battery life cannot compensate for an unqualified NPU or insufficient memory.

Keep a record of where each figure came from. For example, use Windows About for the installed processor and RAM, the OEM sheet for NPU TOPS and memory type, and Windows Storage for the installed drive. This prevents a retailer listing for one variant from being combined accidentally with a specification sheet for another.
What does the NPU graph in Task Manager actually prove?
The NPU graph proves that Windows is detecting an NPU; it does not prove the unit’s throughput. The graph is therefore a useful second check for an existing laptop, while the OEM specification remains the evidence for the 40+ TOPS requirement.
There are two different questions:
- Is an NPU present and recognized? An NPU panel in Task Manager > Performance answers this question.
- Is the NPU powerful enough for the requirement? The exact laptop specification must provide a rating of at least 40 TOPS.
Do not substitute one answer for the other. A visible graph with no published TOPS number leaves the Copilot+ check incomplete, while a marketing specification without an NPU graph may require Windows updates and a restart before you investigate further.

The processor family is only one part of the requirements. Check the NPU rating, qualifying memory, storage, Windows 11 status, and the explicit platform designation for the exact configuration.

Using the NPU graph as a TOPS measurement
Task Manager reports detection and activity. It does not establish the 40+ TOPS figure, so obtain that value from the manufacturer’s specification.
Ignoring memory type or capacity
A laptop can have a Ryzen AI processor and still fall short with less than 16 GB of RAM or with a memory type outside the stated DDR5 or LPDDR5 requirement. Verify both capacity and type instead of checking capacity alone.

Checking the wrong configuration
Product pages often cover several processors, drive sizes, or memory options. Match the exact model code and installed configuration from Windows to the manufacturer’s page before accepting any claim.
Forgetting the software state
Windows 11 must be fully updated, and Microsoft says feature availability can vary by device, region, and time. An older installation can therefore hide an experience that the hardware and current software support.
Treating a missing feature as proof of failed hardware
First complete Windows Update and restart, then verify the NPU panel and the OEM figures. A feature’s absence at one moment may reflect rollout timing or regional availability rather than the processor’s capability, but it does not remove the need to meet the hardware thresholds.
Can I use a simple pass-or-fail checklist?
Yes. Save the following checklist with the laptop’s model number and fill it from the exact sources rather than from a family-level advertisement.
- Exact Ryzen AI processor recorded from Settings > System > About.
- OEM specification gives the NPU’s TOPS rating, and it is at least 40 TOPS.
- Installed memory is at least 16 GB and is identified as DDR5 or LPDDR5.
- Installed storage is at least 256 GB and is identified as SSD or UFS.
- Windows 11 edition and version recorded, with no pending updates after a restart.
- Task Manager > Performance shows an NPU panel or graph on the existing machine.
- The OEM or Microsoft listing explicitly identifies the exact configuration as a Copilot+ PC.
If any hardware figure is missing, mark the result “unconfirmed” rather than “compatible.” You can make a buying decision after the seller or manufacturer supplies the missing specification; a processor badge alone is not enough evidence.
