To determine whether a Palo Alto GlobalProtect gateway is vulnerable, verify four things in order: whether the firewall runs an affected PAN-OS or Prisma Access release, whether a GlobalProtect portal or gateway is configured, whether Authentication Override cookies and their certificate settings meet the vulnerable condition, and whether logs show signs of exploitation. CVE-2026-0257 is an actively exploited authentication-bypass flaw rated 9.1 by the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore. A device can be exposed even when it has not yet shown a suspicious login, so patching and log review should happen together.
Use the exact release thresholds below, apply a fixed supported version, and use the temporary certificate or Authentication Override controls if a change window is not immediately available. Also check older estates for CVE-2024-3400, the separate 2024 GlobalProtect command-injection vulnerability.

What makes a GlobalProtect gateway vulnerable to CVE-2026-0257?
CVE-2026-0257 is an authentication-bypass vulnerability in GlobalProtect portal and gateway deployments. The Singapore Cyber Security Agency rated it CVSS v3.1 9.1 and reported that successful exploitation can let a remote, unauthenticated attacker bypass security restrictions and establish an unauthorized VPN connection.
Version alone does not establish exposure. The vulnerable condition requires all of the following:

- A Palo Alto firewall running an affected PAN-OS release, or a Prisma Access deployment on an affected release.
- At least one GlobalProtect portal or gateway configured.
- Authentication Override cookies enabled.
- The relevant certificate configuration present for generating and accepting those cookies.
Review both sides of the cookie process. A profile may generate a cookie with one certificate while another setting accepts or validates it. Record the certificate used by each function instead of merely noting that Authentication Override is turned on.
The advisory states that Panorama and Cloud NGFW are not impacted by this CVE. That does not remove the need to check the managed firewalls or GlobalProtect services that those products may administer.

How do I identify the deployment and exact software release?
Start by making an inventory entry for every internet-facing GlobalProtect service. Identify whether it is a standalone PAN-OS firewall or Prisma Access, then capture the complete release string, including the hotfix suffix. A major train such as 11.2 is not precise enough because several hotfix levels have different security status.
- Identify the platform. Mark the asset as PAN-OS or Prisma Access. Keep Panorama and Cloud NGFW in a separate list because they are not affected by CVE-2026-0257 according to the Singapore advisory.
- Record the full release. Copy the version and hotfix exactly as displayed in the firewall or service management interface. Include the device or tenant name, serial or service identifier, and the date and time of the check.
- Map each public endpoint. Note which portal and gateway addresses belong to that release. A single firewall can host more than one portal or gateway profile, and a Prisma Access tenant can have multiple service locations.
- Check support status. If the release is outside the vendor’s currently supported trains, plan a move to a supported fixed release rather than treating an old hotfix as a permanent answer.
Keep this inventory with the change record. It prevents a patched perimeter firewall from being mistaken for another unpatched gateway and gives incident responders a reliable scope if exploitation is suspected.
How do I confirm that GlobalProtect and Authentication Override are configured?
Use the firewall web interface to inspect Network > GlobalProtect > Gateways and Network > GlobalProtect > Portals. These are the configuration locations identified by CERT-EU for reviewing GlobalProtect exposure.
Check gateway profiles
Open each gateway profile and record its interface, public address, authentication profile, client settings, and any Authentication Override options. Confirm whether the gateway accepts an override cookie and which certificate it trusts for that operation.

Check portal profiles
Open every portal profile, including profiles that are not the default. Record whether the portal issues Authentication Override cookies, which certificate signs them, and which certificate or trust setting is used when a gateway accepts them. A portal that appears unused may still be reachable through a published address or an old DNS record.
Reconcile certificate use
Make a simple mapping of profile, cookie action, certificate name, certificate expiration, and accepting gateway. The 2026 vulnerability condition specifically depends on the cookie feature and the relevant certificate configuration, so a generic statement such as “certificates are configured” is insufficient.
If you cannot determine whether a profile is active, treat it as active until you can verify its interface binding and disable or remove the unused configuration under change control.
Which PAN-OS and Prisma Access versions are fixed?
The following thresholds come from the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore advisory dated 31 May 2026. “Before” means releases earlier than the listed fixed level in that train are potentially vulnerable when the configuration condition is present. Where several fixed levels are listed, they represent supported release lines; compare your exact branch with the corresponding threshold rather than assuming that any later-looking number is interchangeable.
| Deployment and train | Potentially vulnerable before | Fixed release levels listed by the advisory |
|---|---|---|
| PAN-OS 12.1 | Any 12.1 release earlier than a listed fix | 12.1.4-h6 or 12.1.7 |
| PAN-OS 11.2 | Any 11.2 release earlier than a listed fix | 11.2.4-h17, 11.2.7-h14, 11.2.10-h7 or 11.2.12 |
| PAN-OS 11.1 | Any 11.1 release earlier than a listed fix | 11.1.4-h33, 11.1.6-h32, 11.1.7-h6, 11.1.10-h25, 11.1.13-h5 or 11.1.15 |
| PAN-OS 10.2 | Any 10.2 release earlier than a listed fix | 10.2.7-h34, 10.2.10-h36, 10.2.13-h21, 10.2.16-h7 or 10.2.18-h6 |
| Prisma Access 11.2 | Any 11.2 release earlier than the listed fix | 11.2.7-h13 |
| Prisma Access 10.2 | Any 10.2 release earlier than the listed fix | 10.2.10-h36 |
Use the latest supported fixed release available for your platform, not simply the lowest number in the table. A hotfix that is fixed for one branch does not make a different branch safe. If a firewall runs an unsupported PAN-OS version, upgrading to a supported train is part of remediation even if an old release appears close to a threshold.
Should I patch, disable Authentication Override, or change the certificate?
Upgrade to the latest supported fixed release as the durable remedy. Until that change is completed, the two controls named by the Singapore advisory and Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 are to use a dedicated certificate for Authentication Override cookies or disable Authentication Override.

| Option | Coverage | Speed | Service impact | Detection value | Support status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Upgrade to a fixed supported release | Addresses the software vulnerability and preserves normal feature use | Requires a change window, testing and possible reboot or service transition | Usually lower than disabling the feature, but validate HA, client and portal behavior | Does not replace log hunting; investigate before and after the upgrade | Supported when the target train is supported |
| Use a dedicated Authentication Override certificate | Separates the cookie function from certificates used elsewhere and is the recommended interim control | Can be implemented faster than a software upgrade if certificate work is ready | Authentication Override workflows continue, but profiles and trust must be updated consistently | Still requires log review and exposure checks | Temporary mitigation; do not treat it as a substitute for patching |
| Disable Authentication Override | Removes the affected feature condition | Fastest emergency control | Clients or workflows that depend on Authentication Override may stop working or require another authentication path | Pair with gateway-log review because disabling a feature does not erase prior activity | Temporary mitigation; upgrade to a supported fixed release |
Apply the software fix safely
- Export or otherwise preserve the current configuration and record the active and standby software releases.
- Confirm that the target release is supported for the hardware or Prisma Access tenant and that the corresponding GlobalProtect client versions are compatible with your user population.
- Review the release notes and maintenance requirements, then schedule the change during an approved window.
- In a high-availability pair, follow the vendor’s supported upgrade sequence and verify state synchronization before moving to the next peer.
- After the upgrade, verify portal and gateway reachability, certificate bindings, Authentication Override behavior, and successful user authentication.
- Update the asset inventory with the exact post-change release and retain the pre-change logs for incident review.
Use an emergency configuration control
If patching cannot happen immediately, choose between a dedicated certificate and disabling Authentication Override based on business dependency. A dedicated certificate is less disruptive when the feature is required, but it must be unique to the cookie function and correctly referenced wherever cookies are generated or accepted. Disabling the feature is quicker when the organization can temporarily use another authentication method.
Record who approved the temporary control, when it took effect, which profiles changed, and the deadline for replacing it with a fixed software release. Recheck the setting after any configuration import or template push.

Begin with GlobalProtect logs, concentrating on successful gateway-connected events. Unit 42 reported that only a small portion of probed devices actually established VPN sessions, so a successful gateway-connected event is more useful for prioritizing an investigation than a simple scan or failed request.
Search for network indicators
Search historical and retained logs for connections or session activity involving these pre-proof-of-concept indicators, written with brackets to avoid accidental clicks:

These indicators are leads, not proof by themselves. An address may be reused, spoofed in a log field, or appear in unrelated traffic. Correlate any match with the event timestamp, gateway name, source address, assigned VPN address, username or unauthenticated state, authentication result, and subsequent internal access.

Also search for the proof-of-concept-associated values endpoint_os_version: Microsoft Windows 10 Pro 64-bit and an empty source_user_info.domain. Empty fields can be represented differently by different log collectors, so search for a blank value, a missing key, and a null value.
Preserve and escalate evidence
Export matching raw events before retention policies or normalization alter them. Preserve the original timestamps and timezone, then build a timeline covering the first probe, any successful gateway connection, assigned addresses, authentication changes, and access to internal applications. A match should trigger your incident-response process, not an immediate assumption that the entire network was compromised.
Review administrator audit logs and configuration changes around the same period. Compare the running configuration with a known-good backup, especially portal and gateway profiles, certificates, authentication settings and interface bindings. If the gateway established an unauthorized session, isolate affected accounts or sessions according to your response plan and investigate traffic from the assigned VPN addresses.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I check whether the management interface is exposed?
Unit 42 describes recurring accidental exposure when GlobalProtect profiles are mapped to HTTP or HTTPS services on a firewall management interface. This is a separate exposure check from the CVE-2026-0257 version test.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Identify the management IP address from an approved asset record.
- From a network segment that is authorized to test the device, perform an out-of-band TCP reachability check against ports 4443 and 3879. Do not probe addresses you do not own or administer.
- Compare any response with the intended management access design. An internet-reachable response where none is expected is a finding requiring immediate review.
- Restrict access with interface-management profiles so that only approved administrative networks can reach management services.
- Repeat the test after the policy change and document the source location, timestamp and observed result.
External-attack-surface monitoring can supplement this check. Unit 42 describes Cortex Xpanse as a capability that identifies publicly exposed PAN-OS gateways and GlobalProtect portals. Treat an external finding as a prompt to validate the asset and configuration internally, not as a replacement for authenticated configuration review.
For broader enterprise vulnerability management, MS-ISAC recommends combining authenticated and unauthenticated SCAP-compliant scanning. Scanning should be coordinated with the firewall owner so that rate limits, maintenance windows and emergency controls are respected.

How do I check an older firewall for CVE-2024-3400?
CVE-2024-3400 is a separate critical PAN-OS GlobalProtect command-injection vulnerability with a CVSS score of 10.0. CERT-EU reported that it affected PAN-OS 10.2 before 10.2.9-h1, 11.0 before 11.0.4-h1, and 11.1 before 11.1.2-h3 when a GlobalProtect portal or gateway was configured.
Use the same configuration locations—Network > GlobalProtect > Gateways and Network > GlobalProtect > Portals—to determine whether the affected feature was enabled during the relevant period. Compare the exact historical and current releases with the CVE-2024-3400 fixed hotfixes, then confirm whether the device was upgraded or temporarily mitigated.
The UK National Cyber Security Centre advised following the vendor’s best-practice mitigation guidance, applying the update or temporary mitigation, and conducting continuous monitoring and threat hunting. A firewall that is now fixed can still require retrospective investigation if it was exposed while running an affected release.
What should the completed vulnerability check record?
A useful record lets another administrator reproduce the decision without guessing which profile or release was examined. Capture:
- Platform: PAN-OS or Prisma Access, with device, tenant and service identifiers.
- Exact software release and hotfix, including the check date and timezone.
- Every GlobalProtect portal and gateway profile reviewed, including inactive-looking profiles.
- Whether Authentication Override cookie generation and acceptance are enabled.
- The certificate used for each cookie action and whether a dedicated certificate is in place.
- The fixed target release or temporary control selected, its approval and expiration date.
- GlobalProtect log-retention sources searched, time range, indicators used and results.
- Management-interface exposure results for ports 4443 and 3879, including the testing network.
- Any CVE-2024-3400 review performed on legacy releases.
Close the record only after the software or configuration change is verified and the required monitoring has been assigned. Keep a follow-up date for removing temporary mitigations and for checking that certificate renewals do not silently revert the dedicated-certificate design.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a failed login or blocked scan prove that my gateway is safe?
No. Failed probes show only that those attempts did not create a session. An attacker may have used a different source, an earlier time period, or a request that is not retained by the current logging policy, so use release and configuration checks together with historical evidence.

Treat the missing fields as a telemetry gap and preserve the logs that are available, including timestamps, source addresses, gateway names and session identifiers. Increase logging or forwarding detail through your normal change process, then correlate firewall events with identity, DNS, proxy and endpoint records.
Do I need to rotate certificates after changing the Authentication Override setting?
Review certificate use whenever the feature is changed, but rotation is an incident-response decision rather than an automatic consequence of every configuration change. If a certificate may have been exposed or misused, involve your certificate authority and response team before revoking it so dependent portals and gateways are not unexpectedly broken.
How should a managed-service customer verify Prisma Access remediation?
Ask the service owner for the tenant’s exact software train, fixed level, portal and gateway configuration status, and the date the provider applied the update. Obtain confirmation of log availability and the temporary-control status rather than relying on a generic statement that the service is patched.
