Find your exact iPhone model, then check Apple’s MagSafe Charger support list. Magnetic MagSafe support is not the same as Qi wireless charging: some older Qi-compatible iPhones can charge on the MagSafe puck, but they do not get the same magnetic alignment or performance. For speed, check the charger’s part number and the power adapter’s output as well as the phone model.
Is my iPhone compatible with a MagSafe charger?
Apple’s current support list identifies iPhone 12 and later families for MagSafe charging, including iPhone 17, iPhone 16, iPhone 15, iPhone 14, iPhone 13, and iPhone 12 models. It also includes iPhone 17e and iPhone Air. Check Apple’s MagSafe Charger compatibility and setup guidance against your precise model, since the list can change when new iPhones are released.

Apple also says some iPhones without MagSafe can charge on the puck because they support Qi wireless charging. Its examples include iPhone 16e, iPhone 11 models, iPhone X, iPhone XS models, iPhone XR, and iPhone 8 models. Apple notes that charging power and times differ for these Qi-compatible phones.

- Identify your iPhone model. Use the model name shown in Settings or the phone’s original packaging; do not rely only on its appearance or purchase year.
- Compare it with Apple’s list. If it appears in the MagSafe-supported group, it supports magnetic MagSafe charging. If it appears among Qi-compatible examples, it may charge on the puck without MagSafe magnetic alignment.
- Check the charger revision and adapter if speed matters. Read the MagSafe Charger part number and the USB-C adapter’s wattage and output, then compare them with Apple’s requirements for that phone.
MagSafe versus Qi: what works differently?
| Compatibility | What to expect | Charging-rate guidance |
|---|---|---|
| MagSafe-supported iPhone | Magnetic alignment and MagSafe charging. | Peak power depends on the iPhone model, charger part number, adapter output, and conditions. |
| Qi-compatible iPhone without MagSafe | May charge when placed on the puck, but Qi compatibility alone does not provide magnetic attachment. | Apple says power and charging times differ from its MagSafe-supported models. |
Apple describes peak rates, not guaranteed everyday charging speeds. Actual power delivery varies with the iPhone, adapter wattage, and system conditions.

What wattage adapter do I need for a MagSafe charger?
There is no single adapter rule that guarantees the same rate for every iPhone. Apple’s detailed peak-rate guidance ties specific iPhone models to charger revisions and adapter output. The following are Apple’s stated maximums for those combinations, not promised real-world rates:
| Apple-listed iPhone models | Apple-stated peak | Charger and adapter conditions |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro Max | Up to 25 W | MagSafe Charger A3502, A3503, A2580, or A3250, with a 30 W-or-greater adapter meeting 15 V/2.0 A or higher. |
| iPhone Air | Up to 20 W | Apple lists this separately; check its current support guidance for the applicable charger and adapter requirements. |
| iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro | Up to 22.5 W | Apple lists this separately; check its current support guidance for the applicable charger and adapter requirements. |
| iPhone 17e, iPhone 15 and earlier models in the listed group | Up to 15 W | Apple lists MagSafe Charger A2140 and a 20 W-or-greater USB-C adapter meeting its specified 9 V output. Mini-model exceptions apply; a 12 W adapter can work more slowly. |
Apple also says the charger can connect to an Apple-recommended 30 W-or-greater adapter, a compatible third-party USB-C adapter, or a USB-C port on a Mac or PC. That general connection guidance is not a substitute for the stricter adapter-output requirements attached to particular peak-rate combinations.

Will a case or accessory affect charging?
Apple’s guidance does not establish that every third-party case will work or fail. Keep cards, security badges, passports, and key fobs out of the space between the phone and charger. Remove an attached iPhone Leather Wallet before charging. If the iPhone is connected to MagSafe and also to Lightning or USB-C, Apple says it charges through the connector instead.
