You can check by observing the app while you trigger one feature at a time: identify its process and child processes, trace network-related system calls, record DNS lookups and socket connections, then capture and inspect packets. Correlating timestamps, process IDs, destinations, and upload sizes can show whether the app contacted a likely AI service. It usually cannot reveal the exact prompt: HTTPS/TLS encrypts the contents of network traffic.
What can you prove about an app’s network activity?
A careful test can establish that a particular process opened a connection, which remote address it reached, when the connection occurred, and how much traffic moved. If the destination hostname or other visible metadata is associated with an AI service, that is evidence the app may be using that service. It is not, by itself, proof that a specific prompt was sent or that the connection carried AI-generated content.

These observations answer different questions, so use them together rather than treating one tool as conclusive:
| Method | What it can show | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Process and socket inspection | Which process currently owns a network socket, subject to permissions and timing. | Very brief connections may end before you inspect them; helper processes may own the socket instead of the main app. |
strace |
Network-related system calls made by a traced process, such as attempts to connect or send data. | It shows the system calls and code paths exercised during the test, not every behavior the app could ever perform. Tracing may slow the app. |
| DNS observation | Names resolved during the test and the answers returned by the resolver. | A cached answer, direct-IP connection, proxy, or other resolver path may mean a relevant name does not appear in the observation. |
| Packet capture | Network endpoints, timing, protocols, and traffic volume; packet analysis can reveal additional unencrypted metadata. | Encryption commonly hides application payloads. A machine-wide capture does not, on its own, identify which app generated a packet. |
| Authorized endpoint decryption | Potentially, application-layer content visible at a test endpoint configured to decrypt traffic. | This changes the test setup, may not work with the app, and requires safe handling of credentials and sensitive data. |
The useful result is a documented chain of evidence: a user action, a process or helper, a connection at the corresponding time, and a destination that can be assessed. Red Hat describes strace as tracing interactions between an application and the Linux kernel, including system calls, signals, and process-state changes. Its guidance also warns that tracing can slow a program and that filtering is important for practical output.

How should you prepare a clean test?
First make the test narrow enough to interpret. Record the app version, account state, feature you plan to exercise, and exact input. Use a clean run and avoid unrelated network activity where practical; otherwise, updates, other apps, and background services can be mistaken for the behavior you are investigating.
Set up a controlled run
- Choose one action. For example, test one AI-related feature rather than clicking through several unrelated parts of the app. Note the exact input you will use and when you submit it.
- Record the baseline. Start the app and observe its startup and idle behavior before using the feature. This helps distinguish a feature-triggered connection from ordinary startup traffic.
- Limit unrelated traffic. Close unrelated network-using apps if that is practical. If you can safely block networking before the test, do so only for the baseline; a blocked app cannot demonstrate the destination it would otherwise contact.
- Keep time consistent. Use timestamps from your trace and capture, and note the wall-clock time of each user action. Time correlation is central to attributing a connection to a particular action.
- Plan the scope. In separate runs, test startup, idle time, ordinary use, the AI feature, sign-in, updates, and relevant error paths. One successful run cannot establish what happens on untested paths.
Do not enter real confidential material merely to make a test more convincing. A short, distinctive test input is usually safer. If you later compare upload volumes for inputs of different lengths, change only the input length while keeping the action and other conditions as similar as possible.

How do you identify the app process and its network connections?
Find the app’s process ID (PID), then check for child processes and sockets. Repeat these checks after you trigger the feature: a helper process may make the connection, and a short-lived socket may disappear quickly.
Find the PID and process tree
On many Linux systems, you can search the running process list by a distinctive part of the app name:
pgrep -af 'app-name'
Replace app-name with a distinctive process-name fragment. Check the command and arguments in the output rather than assuming the first match is the correct process. To inspect parent-child relationships and command lines, use:
ps -eo pid,ppid,comm,args
Record the app’s PID and any relevant children. A graphical launcher, browser-based wrapper, updater, or separate helper can make attribution less obvious. If the process changes after a restart, record the new PID rather than reusing the old one.

Check sockets while the app is active
Use the socket listing to look for connections owned by the process:
ss -tpn
Process details may require elevated privileges. If the output does not show ownership, repeat with appropriate administrative privileges on your own system, for example sudo ss -tpn. Match the PID or process name, remote address, and connection state to the time of your test. A socket listing is a snapshot, not a history: run it during the feature action or alongside the packet capture.
Do not infer that the app made no connection just because the listing is empty. The connection could have ended before inspection, the process details could be hidden by permissions, or a separate child or background service could be responsible. That is why process inspection works best with a trace and capture.
How do you trace network system calls with strace?
Trace the app’s network-related system calls while performing the test action. This can reveal which process attempted to connect or send and receive data, but it does not decode an HTTPS request into its prompt or response.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

After identifying the PID, attach with a filtered trace:
sudo strace -f -tt -e trace=connect,sendto,sendmsg,recvfrom,recvmsg -p PID
Replace PID with the numeric process ID. The -f option follows child processes created by the traced process; it does not guarantee that an already-running, separate helper will be traced. -tt adds timestamps, and the selected system calls focus output on common network activity rather than every interaction with the kernel. Stop the trace after the action you are testing, and save the output if you need an auditable record.

You can also start the app under a trace if that better captures startup behavior. In that case, use the same filtering and follow-child-process approach, with the app’s normal launch command in place of the PID attachment. The exact launch command depends on how the app is installed and started, so do not assume that a desktop launcher’s command is identical to a terminal command.
Interpret the trace conservatively
Look for the time of a connection attempt and the address or socket information shown by the trace. A system call records what the process asked the kernel to do; it is not the same as proof that a remote service received or processed a particular payload. Correlate the event with socket and packet observations before drawing a conclusion.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Tracing can affect performance and generate large output. Keep the filter focused, stop once the planned action is complete, and note that a slow or altered run may not behave exactly like an untraced session. The Linux kernel’s workload-tracing documentation makes the broader limitation explicit: “The completeness of the system usage information depends on the completeness of coverage of a workload.” A trace only covers the paths exercised in that run.
How do you capture and inspect packets?
Capture traffic during the same controlled action, then inspect the saved file in Wireshark or analyze it with TShark. The capture helps establish when connections occurred, which remote endpoints were involved, and how much traffic moved; it does not automatically attribute every packet to the app.
Write a capture to a file
Choose the network interface used by the app and capture to a file. The Wireshark User’s Guide documents the following tcpdump pattern when full-sized packet capture is needed:
sudo tcpdump -i INTERFACE -s 65535 -w test.pcap
Replace INTERFACE with the interface name for your system. If you do not know the name, inspect available interfaces first with your system’s network tools. On systems where the capture tool supports an all-interface option, capturing across interfaces can help avoid missing a route change, but it can also collect unrelated traffic. Stop the capture as soon as the test ends, and note its start and stop times.

A packet capture can contain sensitive information. Even when the app uses TLS, it may expose hostnames, addresses, timing, and traffic volume; other unencrypted traffic may reveal more. Store the capture securely and do not publish it casually.
Inspect the saved traffic
Open the capture in Wireshark to examine packet details and timelines, or use TShark to read a saved capture from the command line. Wireshark’s manual describes it as a graphical network protocol analyzer, and its documentation covers both live and saved packet analysis. TShark supports command-line capture, reading saved captures, and display filters.
Start by locating DNS activity and the connections around the timestamp of your feature action. Then compare the remote address and visible hostname or TLS metadata with the process and trace observations. Server Name Indication (SNI) or a hostname may be visible in some TLS handshakes, but visibility depends on the connection and configuration; do not treat missing SNI as proof that no hostname was used. Similarly, an IP address alone may not identify the service behind it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can you decide whether a connection is to an AI service?
Treat the destination as a lead and build corroboration around it. A hostname associated with an AI service is stronger evidence when it appears immediately after a specific AI feature action and the same event is linked to the app or one of its helpers, but endpoint identity alone does not establish what the connection carried.
Build an evidence chain
- Mark the action time. Record when you submitted the test input or invoked the feature.
- Find the process event. Check the trace and process tree for a connection attempt by the app or a child process at that time.
- Match the network event. Find the corresponding socket or captured connection and record the destination address, port, visible hostname, and timing.
- Record traffic volume. Compare bytes sent before and after the action where your capture tools provide that information. A repeatable increase after submission supports the inference that the action generated outbound traffic, but does not identify the payload.
- Assess the destination independently. Consider visible DNS answers, TLS metadata, address ownership, and the app’s own configuration, logs, or documentation. Distinguish what you observed from what you infer about the service.
- Repeat the test. Re-run the same action and compare results. Then vary only one factor, such as input length, if you are testing whether outbound volume changes with the input.
Keep a table that links user actions to observations. For example:
| Time | Action | Process or PID | Observed connection | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Record from your test | Record the exact feature action | Record the app or helper process | Record hostname or IP, port, and bytes if available | Label as observation or inference |
Do not write “the app sent my prompt” when the evidence establishes only that the process connected to a particular host and transferred data. A stronger claim needs evidence about content, such as authorized endpoint-side visibility or other reliable application-level evidence. Even then, describe the test conditions and scope precisely.

What does HTTPS hide, and what can still be seen?
HTTPS/TLS generally encrypts application data in transit, so passive packet capture normally cannot show the exact prompt or response. It can still show that a connection occurred, when it occurred, the remote endpoint where visible, and the amount and pattern of traffic.
For content inspection, an authorized endpoint-decryption setup would have to be available and appropriate for the app and test. Decryption can change TLS behavior, may fail when the app does not accept the test setup, and can expose sensitive credentials or user data. Do not install interception certificates or capture other people’s traffic without authorization. If you cannot safely inspect content, report the evidence you do have—connection timing, endpoint, process attribution, and bytes—without claiming to know the encrypted payload.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat can make the results incomplete or misleading?
Network observation has blind spots. Record the ones that affect your test so a reader can distinguish “not observed” from “did not happen.”
- Unattributed machine-wide traffic: A capture from an interface may include all applications. Use process and socket evidence to associate connections with the app, and account for child processes.
- Short-lived sockets: A connection can close before a socket listing identifies it. Capture and trace during the action; Wireshark’s process-information support also notes that very short-lived sockets can be missed.
- Privilege limits: Insufficient permissions can hide process details or prevent packet capture. Wireshark’s process information depends on which processes the user is allowed to identify.
- Separate helpers or services: A launcher, updater, or background service may communicate on the app’s behalf. Record the process tree and do not assume the main window’s PID owns every connection.
- Proxies and name-resolution paths: A proxy can make the observed destination the proxy rather than the ultimate service. Cached DNS, direct-IP connections, or another resolver path can also leave no obvious DNS query in your capture.
- Incomplete feature coverage: Startup, idle, normal operation, sign-in, update, AI-feature, and error behavior may take different code paths. Testing one path cannot rule out activity on another.
- Tracing overhead: System-call tracing can slow a program and affect timing. Note that the run was traced, and compare with a capture-only run if timing itself is important.
- Encrypted payloads: A large upload to a likely AI endpoint is suggestive, not a readable prompt. Volume and destination are not substitutes for payload evidence.
How should you report the result?
Write down the test conditions and separate direct observations from conclusions. A concise record should let another person understand what you tested and repeat it without implying that one run proves all app behavior.
- App name and version; account state; Linux environment details relevant to the test.
- Feature exercised, exact test input or a safe description of it, and timestamps for each action.
- Tool names and versions, commands used, permissions, interface captured, and any proxy or decryption setup.
- Process tree and PIDs; DNS answers observed; destination hostnames or IP addresses and ports; connection timing and byte counts where available.
- Capture filename and a cryptographic hash if you need to show the file was not changed after collection.
- Separate statements such as “PID 1234 connected to address X at 14:02” from interpretations such as “the address appears associated with an AI service.”
- State which paths you did not test and whether short-lived sockets, permissions, helpers, or encryption limited what you could observe.
This approach supports a defensible finding about observed network behavior. It does not turn an endpoint match or encrypted upload into proof of the exact content transmitted.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an app send data without making a DNS query I can see?
Yes. The app may use a cached DNS answer, connect directly to an IP address, or send traffic through a proxy or another resolver path. An absent DNS record in one capture does not establish that the app made no network connection.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does a large upload prove that my prompt was sent?
No. Upload volume can support a timing-based inference, especially across controlled repeat runs, but it cannot identify the contents of encrypted traffic. Report the measured bytes and the inference separately.
Is it safe to share a packet capture when HTTPS is enabled?
Not automatically. A capture can still reveal network metadata and may include unrelated or unencrypted traffic, so review and protect it before sharing; avoid distributing data collected from other users or apps.
