The most reliable way to check whether a game used AI is to start with the game’s current store-page disclosure, preserve its exact wording and the date you saw it, and then corroborate that statement with developer records, credits, production notes, and supported provenance checks. Treat a disclosure as a first-party account—not an independent audit—and treat visual clues or detector scores as leads rather than proof.

Keep separate questions separate: whether AI was used for pre-generated art, sound, writing, localization, interface elements, marketing, or code; whether content is generated during development or while the game runs; and whether the evidence concerns one file or the whole production. For code, a finished executable normally cannot establish AI assistance by itself. A defensible finding states exactly what was checked, what the evidence supports, and what remains unknown.

What can you actually establish about a game’s AI use?

You can usually establish a documented claim about a particular category of content, but rarely prove the entire production history from the shipped game alone. The strongest evidence is a dated developer statement or production record that identifies the affected asset, tool or workflow, and whether the output reached the released build. Technical provenance can strengthen that conclusion when a supported signed signal is present.

Use precise language. “The developer disclosed pre-generated background art” is materially different from “the game was made by AI.” Likewise, “a supported provenance check found a C2PA manifest” identifies a recorded origin signal; it does not reveal every prompt, edit, contributor, or licensing term.

What does a Steam AI disclosure prove?

A Steam disclosure is a useful starting point and a statement by the developer. It is not a third-party audit of every shipped asset, code change, or update.

Read the statement at the current store page

Open the game’s Steam store page and use the browser’s Find command for AI, generative, and Generated. Copy the complete statement, including headings and qualifiers, and record the page URL and the date checked. Save a screenshot or PDF if the wording may be important to a dispute or article.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Steam’s disclosure framework distinguishes content made before release from content generated while the game is running. Record which one the statement names. Also record the content class: art, sound or voice, writing, localization, interface material, marketing material, or another category. A disclosure about one class does not establish AI use in all the others.

Check whether the wording changed

Compare the disclosure with patch notes, update announcements, and the game’s release history. A statement added after launch may describe a later feature, downloadable content, or a live-generation system rather than the original build. If you are comparing two games, check both pages during the same date range and retain the wording you actually saw.

How should you interpret a silent page?

Silence is not proof that no AI was used. The disclosure may be absent, incomplete, changed, or limited to a particular type of content. Report the narrower finding: “No confirmed public disclosure found on the store page as of [date checked], after searching for AI, generative, and Generated.” Do not convert that result into “the game used no AI.”

How do you separate the different kinds of AI use?

Make an inventory instead of applying a single “AI-made” label. The same game can use a generative tool for concept art during development, human-written dialogue in the shipped build, and a separate runtime system that creates optional player-facing text.

Use category Question to answer Why the distinction matters
Pre-generated visual assets Was an image, texture, model, animation, or other asset generated during development? It may be fixed in the shipped files and never generated for players.
Pre-generated sound or voice Were music, effects, speech, or voice performances generated or transformed before release? Consent, likeness, licensing, and attribution questions can differ by file.
Writing and localization Was text, dialogue, quest content, or translation generated or assisted? AI use in text does not imply AI use in art, code, or gameplay systems.
Interface and marketing Were menus, icons, promotional images, store copy, or trailers made with AI? These materials may be public-facing without being part of the game build.
Code assistance Did a model suggest, transform, test, or document code that reached the released product? Assistance is a workflow claim; coding style alone cannot prove it.
Runtime generation Does the game create content while it runs for a player? This changes what players see and may involve different disclosure and safety concerns.

Record the developer’s own scope. If the statement names only “background images,” do not expand it to characters, animation, voices, or source code without separate evidence.

What evidence should you seek after finding a disclosure?

Corroboration is strongest when it connects a specific claim to a specific shipped file or build. Look for several independent records, while acknowledging that many studios do not publish their complete production history.

Developer and publisher statements

Search official developer blogs, patch notes, interviews, community announcements, production diaries, and support replies. Prefer statements that identify what was generated, what people changed, and whether the material remained in the released version. A general statement that a studio “uses AI internally” does not establish that a particular game asset or code path used it.

Credits and asset records

Inspect in-game credits, the store’s credits section, manuals, and any public asset lists. A missing credit is not proof of AI generation: credits can be incomplete, outsourced work may be grouped under a company name, and a generated draft may have been substantially remade by artists. Conversely, a named human contributor does not by itself prove that every intermediate tool was human-only.

Production notes and build documentation

Useful records include development postmortems, repository history, build notes, tool disclosures, and explanations of which generated outputs entered the product. For media, ask four concrete questions: which shipped file was involved, which tool or service produced the initial output, who selected or modified it, and what licensing or consent records apply?

Independent records

Archived store-page captures, dated developer posts, public repository commits, and contemporaneous build documentation can corroborate a later statement. Preserve the date and scope of each record. Several copies of the same press statement are not independent confirmation; they are repetitions of one source.

How do provenance checks such as C2PA work?

Provenance systems can attach signed metadata describing an asset’s origin or edits. When a supported manifest or watermark is present and verifies correctly, it can provide useful evidence about the recorded chain. It is still a bounded check, not a universal AI detector.

Use the original file

Run any supported check on the original image, audio file, video, or document whenever possible. Screenshots, social-media downloads, compression, cropping, re-encoding, and metadata removal can weaken or erase provenance signals. Keep a hash or an untouched copy so another person can examine the same file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand what a positive signal identifies

Microsoft describes checks for supported provenance, including C2PA manifests and Microsoft watermark signals. OpenAI documents checks for supported C2PA and SynthID signals. A positive result should be reported with the issuer and signal type: for example, “the checker verified a C2PA manifest issued by [issuer]” or “the supported watermark check returned a match.” Do not turn that result into a claim about the complete edit history, the individual creator, the prompt, or legal ownership.

Understand what a negative signal means

A negative result means only that the checker did not identify a signal it supports. Microsoft says its service does not identify all AI-generated content or guarantee attribution. OpenAI’s documented checker is limited to supported signals and does not detect output from every other provider. Therefore, “no provenance found” is not equivalent to “human-created.”

Can visual clues or an AI detector prove an asset was generated?

No. They can justify further checking, but they do not establish authorship on their own.

Visual and audio clues

Unusual lettering, distorted anatomy, inconsistent shadows, repeated textures, implausible reflections, or an unnatural voice can be useful leads. The same symptoms can result from human mistakes, procedural generation, stock assets, compression, aggressive post-processing, localization, or deliberate art direction. Capture the exact file and explain the observable clue without calling it proof.

Detector scores

Detector output depends on the file type, resolution, language, compression, model coverage, and the detector’s supported signals. A score is not a chain of custody. If you report one, name the file, service, date, result, and limitations, then identify the independent evidence that supports or contradicts it. Running several detectors does not automatically create independent confirmation when they rely on similar signals or training data.

What a responsible conclusion looks like

Use “unconfirmed” when the case consists only of visual clues or a detector result. Use “plausible” when several clues fit a documented workflow but no direct record identifies the shipped asset. Reserve “confirmed” for a direct disclosure or production record that clearly covers the claim, and explain any remaining uncertainty about scope.

How can you investigate AI assistance in a game’s code?

Look for records that connect assistance to code in the released build. A finished executable usually cannot reveal whether a human typed every line, accepted a model suggestion, adapted a snippet, or wrote the system without assistance.

Seek a developer account tied to the build

Useful evidence includes a postmortem, repository history, build documentation, engineering blog, or a direct statement identifying assisted modules or workflows. The statement should distinguish brainstorming, documentation, test generation, autocomplete, refactoring, and code that actually shipped. “We permit AI tools” is a policy statement, not proof that this game’s released code used them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check repository history when it is public

Look for dated commits, pull requests, generated-file notes, and review discussions. Repository history can show when a change appeared and who reviewed it, but it may not preserve the tool that suggested the change. A public repository can also differ from the retail build, so verify tags, branches, release dates, and build identifiers.

Do not infer from coding style or gameplay

Verbose comments, repetitive functions, unusual naming, bugs, or a particular gameplay feel are not reliable indicators of model assistance. Human teams use templates, middleware, code generators, and copied examples. Conversely, polished code does not prove that no model was involved.

Separate runtime generation from development assistance

A game may use a model to help developers while shipping entirely fixed content, or it may generate dialogue, quests, images, or other material during play. Ask which situation the evidence describes and whether the player can encounter the generated result. Do not treat a code-assistance disclosure as evidence that player-facing content is generated at runtime.

How should you document a finding?

  1. Identify the exact product. Record the game title, platform, edition, region if relevant, version or build number, and the date checked.
  2. Preserve first-party wording. Copy the complete store-page disclosure and save a screenshot or archived capture when permitted.
  3. Define the claim. Specify the asset or code category, whether generation was pre-release or runtime, and whether the claim concerns the game build, marketing, or community material.
  4. List corroboration. Add developer statements, credits, production records, repository evidence, and provenance results with their dates.
  5. Record technical details. For a file check, note the original filename, file type, hash if available, tool or service used, signal returned, and whether the file was recompressed or edited.
  6. Label confidence. State what is confirmed, what is independently corroborated, what is merely plausible, and what remains unknown.
Label Use it when Example wording
Confirmed A direct disclosure or production record clearly covers the specific asset, workflow, or code in question. “The developer disclosed that pre-generated menu illustrations in version 1.2 used a generative tool.”
Corroborated A direct statement aligns with independent records such as a dated build note, repository history, or verified provenance. “The disclosure is corroborated by the identified asset record and a supported provenance manifest.”
Plausible Multiple clues fit, but no record identifies the shipped item with enough precision. “AI involvement is plausible, but the available evidence does not identify the production file.”
Unconfirmed The case rests on appearance, a detector score, rumor, or an unverified post. “The claim remains unconfirmed; no direct statement or supported record was found.”

What are the most common investigation mistakes?

  • Calling the whole game AI-made. Replace the blanket label with the named content class and generation stage.
  • Treating a store-page disclosure as an audit. Quote its scope and identify what it does not address.
  • Interpreting silence as exoneration. Report that no confirmed disclosure was found, with the date and search terms.
  • Testing a screenshot instead of the source file. Obtain the original whenever possible and explain any transformations.
  • Presenting a detector score as a verdict. Describe the supported signal and pair it with independent records.
  • Assuming a provenance manifest proves legal status. Provenance records origin signals; licensing, consent, copyright, and contractual rights require separate documentation.
  • Inferring code assistance from style. Ask for repository history, a postmortem, or build documentation tied to the released product.
  • Comparing games checked on different dates. Store text and content can change through patches, so use the same date range and record updates.

How can you compare two games fairly?

Apply the same questions and evidence standard to both games. A title with disclosed background art is not equivalent to one that generates dialogue during play, and code assistance does not establish that the art or writing was generated.

Comparison axis What to record
Where AI appears Named art, sound or voice, writing, localization, interface, code workflow, marketing, or runtime generation.
When generation happens During development, at runtime, or both.
Player exposure Content shipped in the game, shown only in store or marketing material, or generated interactively for players.
Transparency Exact disclosure wording, date checked, named tools or assets, and changes to the statement.
Provenance and rights Named human contributors, available source records, licenses, and voice or likeness consent where relevant.
Confidence What is directly stated, independently corroborated, merely plausible, or unconfirmed.

When should you repeat the check?

Repeat the store-page and supported-provenance checks after a material update, downloadable-content release, engine migration, or change to the game’s generation features. Keep the earlier capture rather than overwriting it: a later disclosure can describe a newly added system, while the original build may have had a different asset set. Use the version and date in every note so readers know which release your conclusion covers.

What is a practical checklist before publishing a claim?

  • Have you copied the exact current store-page wording and recorded the date?
  • Did you distinguish pre-generated content from runtime generation?
  • Did you name the affected category instead of describing the entire game as AI-made?
  • Did you check developer statements, credits, production notes, and build or repository records?
  • Did you use an original file for any provenance check and identify the supported signal?
  • Did you explain that a negative detector result does not prove human authorship?
  • Did you avoid inferring AI use from visual style, voice quality, gameplay feel, or coding style alone?
  • Did you label the result as confirmed, corroborated, plausible, or unconfirmed?
  • Did you state the edition, build, date, and unresolved scope?

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a game’s publisher change its AI disclosure after release?

Yes. Store text can be revised when content, policies, or disclosures change. Keep dated captures and tie every conclusion to a specific version or date instead of treating the current wording as a permanent record.

What should I save if I think an asset’s provenance result will be disputed?

Preserve the original file, a cryptographic hash, the exact checker result, and a screenshot showing the issuer or signal. Also record any conversion, crop, compression, or metadata removal that occurred before testing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does an AI provenance signal settle copyright or voice-consent questions?

No. A provenance signal describes a supported origin or edit record; it does not decide copyright ownership, license scope, performer consent, likeness rights, or contractual obligations. Those questions require the relevant agreements and jurisdiction-specific analysis.

Can a private development tool be verified from a public game build?

Usually not. If the studio does not publish workflow records, the final files may show no reliable trace of which assistant, model, or prompt was used. Report the workflow as unknown rather than inferring it from the result’s style.
