A game disappearing from the Xbox store does not automatically remove it from an account that previously bought or redeemed it. To check, sign in with the Microsoft/Xbox account that acquired the game, open that account’s game library, and look for the title. For a supported digital Xbox 360 or original Xbox game on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, Xbox says the owned title appears in Ready to Install. Then check compatibility with the console you intend to use. Ownership, storefront availability, console compatibility, disc ownership, and online-service availability are separate questions.
What “delisted” means on Xbox
“Delisted” describes a storefront state: a game can no longer be newly purchased from the relevant Xbox store. It does not, by itself, say that every previous buyer lost access. A title can be unavailable to new customers while remaining attached to an account that bought it, or while remaining playable from a disc.

Delisting also does not prove that a game runs on every Xbox console. A digital entitlement can exist on an account even when the title is not supported on the particular console being used. Conversely, a compatible disc may install only when the disc is inserted, and the disc may need to stay in the drive during play.

What you need before checking
- The Microsoft/Xbox account or gamertag that may have purchased or redeemed the game.
- Access to an Xbox console or the account’s Xbox game library.
- The exact game name, and, if known, its edition or bundled version.
- The console on which you want to play it: Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox 360, or another system.
- If your copy is physical, the original compatible game disc.
A library check can only show entitlements associated with the account currently signed in. It cannot reveal a purchase made under another Microsoft account, a different gamertag, or a separate disc purchase.
Step-by-step: check a digital game on your account
1. Sign in with the account that acquired the game
On the Xbox console, sign in with the Microsoft/Xbox account that bought, redeemed, or otherwise acquired the title. If several people use the console, do not assume that the account currently displayed is the purchasing account. Switch to the account that may hold the entitlement and perform the library check there.
This is the decisive first test. Seeing the game on a console used by a family member or friend does not establish that your own account owns it, and not seeing it while signed in to the wrong account does not establish that the purchase is gone.

Use the console’s game-library view and inspect the list of owned or available-to-install titles. Search for the exact title rather than relying only on a broad recently played list. Delisting affects the store listing; it does not necessarily remove an owned item from the account’s library.
If the title is shown as owned or available to install, the account has an entitlement indication. If it is missing, continue with the account, edition, and platform checks below before concluding that access is unavailable.
3. Check Ready to Install for supported backward-compatible titles
Xbox says owned digital Xbox 360 and original Xbox games that are in its backward-compatibility catalogue automatically appear in Ready to Install on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. This is the most useful library location for a compatible digital title that no longer appears for sale.
Search that section while signed in to the suspected purchasing account. A result there supports two conclusions: the account has a digital entitlement, and Xbox has identified that title as available for installation on that console family. It does not guarantee that every feature works exactly as it did on the original system.

4. Confirm the exact edition and title
Compare the library entry with the game you remember buying. A standard edition, deluxe edition, remaster, bundle, add-on, and backward-compatible version can appear as separate entries or have different names. Look for the exact title and any edition wording shown in the library.
If you owned downloadable content rather than the base game, check for the game and the add-on separately. Xbox’s guidance for the Xbox 360 Store closure says previously purchased games and DLC remain playable and re-downloadable, but the library still has to be checked under the account that acquired each item.
5. Start an installation or launch test
If the title appears, select it and begin installation or launch it from the console’s library. This is a practical confirmation that the account can access the item on that console at that moment. Allow the console to finish any compatibility or game update it requires before judging whether the game works.
If the entry is present but installation fails, record the exact message, console model, account, and edition. Those details are more useful to Xbox Support than a general report that a “delisted game is missing.”
How to interpret the result
| What you find | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| The game appears in the signed-in account’s library | The account has an ownership or redemption entitlement indication for that entry. | That the title is currently sold, compatible with every Xbox, or still has working online services. |
| A supported digital Xbox 360 or original Xbox game appears in Ready to Install on Xbox One or Series X|S | Xbox identifies the owned title as available to install through backward compatibility on that console family. | That every game mode, peripheral, regional feature, or publisher server is still available. |
| The title is absent while signed in | Nothing conclusive if the wrong account, edition, or entitlement type was checked. | That the purchase was deleted or that no account owns it. |
| A compatible disc triggers installation | The disc is being used as the entitlement for that supported game. | That a digital licence exists on the account or that the game works without the disc. |
| The game is listed for sale or absent from the store | Only the current storefront availability. | Whether a previous owner can still download or play it. |
| The game launches but online play fails | The local entitlement and installation may be intact. | That the publisher still operates the game’s online servers. |
Ownership and backward compatibility are separate checks
Xbox supports selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S; it does not make every older title playable on every newer console. The catalogue determines whether an owned digital game can be installed through backward compatibility.
For a compatible physical game, insert the disc into the console to trigger installation. The disc acts as proof of possession, and Xbox says it must remain in the drive to play. Installing the game’s files does not convert that disc copy into a separate digital entitlement.
Xbox Series S is digital-only. A compatible Xbox 360 or original Xbox disc therefore cannot be used in a Series S, even if the same title is supported on other Xbox consoles. You need a digital entitlement associated with the account for that console.

Compatibility is also title-specific. A game’s availability on Xbox One does not automatically answer whether a related edition, expansion, or remastered release is supported. Check the exact entry that appears in the account library or the compatibility catalogue for the console you plan to use.

Xbox stopped new purchases from the Xbox 360 Store and Marketplace on July 29, 2024. That retirement ended new storefront transactions for the affected marketplace; it did not erase the games and downloadable content that customers had already purchased.
Xbox’s closure guidance says previously purchased Xbox 360 games and DLC remain playable and re-downloadable. In its announcement addressing deleted purchases, Xbox stated: “If you’ve deleted a game that you have purchased, but you want to play again, you’ll still be able to re-download it.” Xbox’s current Xbox 360 information likewise says: “You will no longer be able to purchase XBOX 360 games, but you will still be able to play the catalogue of games you own.”
Those statements apply to prior Xbox 360 purchases; they are not a blanket guarantee for every game delisted for licensing, publisher, regional, or technical reasons. A separate delisting can have its own restrictions. Always check the account and the specific title rather than treating the 2024 store closure as an explanation for every missing game.
If the game is missing from the library
Check the account again
Sign out mentally from the assumption that the currently active gamertag is the buyer. Identify every Microsoft/Xbox account that could have made the purchase or redemption and check the library while signed in to each relevant account. A purchase attached to one account will not ordinarily appear as an entitlement for an unrelated account simply because both accounts use the same console.
Check the title and edition
Search for the full title, alternate punctuation, and the edition you actually acquired. A bundle may be listed under a parent product, while downloadable content may appear separately. If you remember a code redemption, verify that the code was redeemed on the account you are checking, not merely that it was intended for that person.
Check whether your copy is physical
A disc purchase will not necessarily appear as a digital owned item in the account library. For a supported disc game, insert the disc and allow the console to identify and install it. Keep the disc in the drive whenever you play. If you own only a disc and are using Xbox Series S, the digital-only hardware cannot read that copy.

Check the target console
A title can be owned but unsupported on the console in front of you. Confirm that the exact game is in the backward-compatibility catalogue for Xbox One or Series X|S when you are checking an older Xbox 360 or original Xbox release. If it is not supported, a library entitlement alone will not make it installable on that newer console.
Escalate with precise details
If the likely purchasing account, exact edition, entitlement type, and target console have all been checked and the title still does not appear, contact Xbox Support. Provide the Microsoft/Xbox account details requested by support, the game’s exact name and edition, the console model, whether the copy was digital or disc-based, and any purchase or redemption information you still have.
There is no single, universally applicable current menu path or order-history procedure established here for every Xbox generation and region. Support can investigate account-specific records that a public webpage cannot inspect.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Online multiplayer may be a separate problem
Finding and installing a delisted game does not guarantee that its online modes still function. Xbox’s closure announcement says online play continues only while the publisher supports the game’s servers. A title can therefore be owned, backward compatible, and launch successfully while matchmaking or other network features no longer operate.
Test the mode you care about after installation and check the game’s current service status before promising that multiplayer will work. Treat offline campaigns and publisher-hosted services as separate parts of the ownership decision.
A compact decision path
- Identify the buyer: use the Microsoft/Xbox account that purchased or redeemed the game.
- Inspect the library: search the exact title and edition.
- Use Ready to Install: for owned digital Xbox 360 and original Xbox games supported on Xbox One or Series X|S.
- Determine the entitlement type: digital account ownership and disc ownership are not interchangeable.
- Check console compatibility: confirm support for the exact game on the console you plan to use.
- Apply the hardware rule: compatible discs require the disc in the drive; Xbox Series S accepts digital games only.
- Check services: verify publisher-server status if online play matters.
- Contact support: give account, title, edition, console, and purchase details if the entitlement remains unaccounted for.
What this check can and cannot prove
A successful library result is the strongest practical indication available to the account holder that the game is owned digitally. It does not turn a delisted title into a new purchase, expand backward compatibility, restore a publisher’s servers, or prove that a different account owns the same item.
Recommended Free Tools
An absent result is likewise not a final verdict until the account, edition, physical-versus-digital status, and target console have been checked. Public information cannot inspect a reader’s private purchase history, redemption records, region, or account entitlements. Those details must be confirmed from the account itself or through Xbox Support.

FAQ
Can I re-download a delisted Xbox 360 game I bought before the store closed?
Xbox says previously purchased Xbox 360 games and DLC remain playable and re-downloadable after the July 29, 2024 Xbox 360 Store and Marketplace closure. Sign in to the purchasing account and look in its library; a separate delisting may have different circumstances.
Does a game being absent from the store mean Microsoft removed it from my account?
No. Storefront availability and an existing account entitlement are different records. Check the purchasing account’s library and, for an eligible older digital title, Ready to Install.
Why can I see a game on one Xbox account but not another?
The entitlement is associated with the account that bought or redeemed the game. A different gamertag or Microsoft account may not display that purchase in its own library.
Can I play a compatible disc game after installing it without the disc?
No. Xbox says a compatible disc must remain in the drive to play. Installation copies the game data to the console but does not create a separate digital licence.
Will a compatible Xbox 360 disc work on Xbox Series S?
No. Xbox Series S is digital-only. A disc-based entitlement requires hardware with a disc drive; on Series S you need a supported digital entitlement.
Does backward compatibility guarantee online multiplayer?
No. Compatibility concerns whether the title can run on the console. Online play also depends on the publisher continuing to operate the game’s servers.
