After you uninstall a third-party antivirus, verify two separate things: that Microsoft Defender Antivirus is the registered provider and that its real-time protection is turned on. Open Windows Security from Start, choose Virus & threat protection, then select Manage providers under Who’s protecting me? For a precise technical check, run Get-MpComputerStatus in PowerShell and read AMRunningMode: Normal means Defender is running in active mode. Finish with a Quick scan and review recent Protection history so you have evidence that scanning and remediation are working.
What should you check immediately after uninstalling another antivirus?
A compatible non-Microsoft antivirus normally registers itself as the primary provider and places Defender in disabled mode while it supplies real-time protection. When that product is uninstalled, expires, or stops supplying real-time protection, Windows can automatically return Defender to service. The hand-off is not something you should assume, however: check the registered provider, the running mode, and the real-time protection switch separately.

Use this order because each check answers a different question:
- Provider check: Which antivirus Windows currently recognizes as responsible?
- Mode check: Is Microsoft Defender active, passive, or disabled?
- Continuous-protection check: Is real-time protection enabled?
- Function check: Can Defender complete an on-demand scan and show a recent event?
How do I see which antivirus Windows has registered?
The Windows Security app gives the clearest graphical answer. It shows whether Microsoft Defender is the current provider or whether another security product still has control.

- Open the Start menu and type Windows Security.
- Open the app, then select Virus & threat protection.
- Find the Who’s protecting me? area and select Manage providers.
- Look under the antivirus section for Microsoft Defender Antivirus. Its presence as the provider indicates that Windows has registered Defender for antivirus protection.
If a different provider is still listed, Windows may still regard that product as installed or responsible even if you removed its main application. Do not treat the desktop shortcut being gone as proof that the provider hand-off is complete; the provider page is the relevant Windows status view.
What the provider page can and cannot prove
- It identifies the antivirus provider registered with Windows.
- It does not, by itself, prove that real-time monitoring is currently switched on.
- It does not replace a scan or a review of recent protection events.
How do I use PowerShell to confirm Defender’s running mode?
PowerShell exposes the status value that is most useful for a precise check or for documenting a support case.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open Start, type PowerShell, and launch Windows PowerShell (or PowerShell).
- At the prompt, enter:
Get-MpComputerStatus
- Press Enter and locate the
AMRunningModeline in the returned status.
Microsoft’s documented interpretation is exact: Normal means Microsoft Defender Antivirus is running in active mode. In active mode, Defender is the primary antivirus: it scans files, remediates detected threats, and reports detections.
Read the important AMRunningMode values
| AMRunningMode value | What it means | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | Defender is running in active mode and is the primary antivirus. | Confirm Real-time protection is On, then run a Quick scan. |
| Passive | Defender is not the primary antivirus. On supported enterprise configurations, it may still scan files, but it is not the primary remediator. | Check whether another provider or organizational configuration is intentional. Do not assume Passive provides the same role as Normal. |
| EDR Block Mode | The status output can report this mode when antivirus protection is enabled in a managed configuration. | Interpret it with the device’s management context and, if necessary, ask the administrator what policy is applied. |
| Disabled or uninstalled | Defender is not being used for antivirus protection; files are not scanned and threats are not remediated by it. | Check the Windows Security settings and whether a different provider is still registered. |
For a shorter result that is easier to paste into a support ticket, run:
Get-MpComputerStatus | Select AMRunningMode
The output should show the mode value without the rest of the status object. Keep the full command available when troubleshooting because the additional fields can help an administrator understand the device’s configuration.
How do I verify that real-time protection is actually on?
Active mode and real-time protection are related but distinct checks. In Windows Security > Virus & threat protection, select Manage settings. The Real-time protection switch should read On.

Real-time protection continuously monitors files and programs as they are accessed or executed. A Quick scan can confirm that Defender can perform an on-demand scan, but it cannot substitute for this switch: an on-demand scan and continuous monitoring are different functions.
Settings worth checking alongside the switch
- Cloud-delivered protection: Microsoft recommends enabling it for optimal protection.
- Automatic sample submission: Microsoft also recommends leaving this enabled for optimal protection.
These controls are in the same Manage settings area. If Real-time protection is On but another control is intentionally managed by your organization, record the displayed state rather than repeatedly changing it.
What should I do if Defender is still off after uninstalling the other antivirus?
Start with the settings path rather than reinstalling security software. Go to Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Manage settings and turn Real-time protection on. Then return to the provider page and PowerShell check to see whether the provider and AMRunningMode now agree.
- Open Windows Security from Start.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Manage settings.
- Switch Real-time protection to On.
- Ensure Cloud-delivered protection and Automatic sample submission are enabled if you control the device and want Microsoft’s recommended configuration.
- Open Manage providers and confirm that Microsoft Defender Antivirus is listed.
- Run
Get-MpComputerStatusand verifyAMRunningMode.
If the setting immediately turns itself off, remains unavailable, or does not match the provider page, avoid making random registry or policy changes. A remaining security provider, a work or school policy, or a Defender for Endpoint configuration may be controlling the state.
When a greyed-out control is a management issue
A greyed-out setting is a strong sign that local Windows Security is not the authority for that option. On a work-managed computer, organizational policy can deliberately keep Defender in Passive mode or control real-time protection. Defender for Endpoint can also affect the mode shown.
In that situation, contact the device administrator and provide:

Do not disable enterprise policy locally to force a consumer-style Normal status. The administrator needs to determine whether Passive or another managed state is intentional.
How can I tell whether another antivirus is still taking priority?
The provider page is the authoritative visual check for registration. A compatible non-Microsoft antivirus normally becomes the primary provider and places Defender in disabled mode while it supplies real-time protection. If that product is removed, expires, or stops supplying real-time protection, Defender may be re-enabled automatically.
Use the following sequence to distinguish a normal hand-off from an incomplete removal:
- Check Manage providers and note every antivirus provider Windows lists.
- Run
Get-MpComputerStatus | Select AMRunningMode. - If a third-party provider remains listed and Defender is not Normal, confirm that the third-party product is genuinely uninstalled and that its real-time protection is no longer active.
- If the provider page lists Defender but the mode is Passive, investigate enterprise management or Defender for Endpoint before changing settings.
- After any legitimate change, repeat the provider, mode, and Real-time protection checks.
Do not infer status from a product’s icon, a missing Start-menu entry, or a notification alone. Windows’ provider registration and Defender’s own status output are the relevant evidence.
What is the difference between active, passive, and disabled Defender?
These terms describe different responsibilities, not merely different labels in the interface.
Active mode (Normal)
Defender is the primary antivirus. It scans files, remediates threats, and reports detections. For a typical personal Windows installation after removing another antivirus, this is the state you generally want.

Passive mode
Defender is not the primary antivirus. Microsoft’s compatibility documentation notes that, on supported enterprise configurations, files may still be scanned, but Defender is not the primary remediator. Passive mode can also be associated with Windows 11 Smart App Control; that association is distinct from Defender for Endpoint passive mode.
Disabled or uninstalled
Defender is not being used. Its antivirus engine is not scanning files and is not remediating threats. A different provider may be responsible, or the computer may currently have no active antivirus provider.
Because Passive can still involve scanning in supported enterprise setups, do not use the word “scanning” alone as proof that Defender is the primary protection. Check the mode and provider together.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can Task Manager confirm that Defender is running?
Task Manager offers a useful corroborating check, but it is not a complete protection-state test. Open Task Manager, select Details, and look for MsMpEng.exe. Microsoft’s compatibility guidance identifies that process as an indicator that Defender is enabled.

Task Manager does not tell you whether Real-time protection is On, which provider Windows registered, or whether recent scans produced detections. Those questions require Windows Security and Defender’s status command.

How do I use a Quick scan as a practical follow-up?
Once the provider and settings checks look correct, run an on-demand Quick scan. In Windows Security > Virus & threat protection, select Quick scan and let it complete.
A completed scan demonstrates that the Defender engine can perform an on-demand check. If it reports a threat, follow the action Windows Security presents and then review the event in Protection history. If it reports no threats, that is useful evidence about the scanned areas at that moment, but it is not a guarantee that every file on the computer is clean.
Review Protection history after the scan
Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history. This page shows actions Defender took, such as detected items and the remediation state. Microsoft says Protection history retains events for two weeks, so use it as short-term confirmation and capture any details you need for a support record before they age out.
Protection history is most useful when paired with the time of your Quick scan and the AMRunningMode result. Together, they show which provider was registered, which mode Defender reported, and whether the engine performed a scan or took an action.
What troubleshooting path should I follow when the checks disagree?
| What you see | Likely interpretation | Next check |
|---|---|---|
Defender listed as provider; AMRunningMode is Normal; Real-time protection On |
Defender is registered, active, and set for continuous monitoring. | Run a Quick scan and review Protection history. |
| Another provider listed; Defender is Disabled | The other antivirus is still the primary provider, or Windows has not completed the hand-off. | Confirm the other product’s removal or expiry, then recheck provider registration. |
Defender listed; AMRunningMode is Passive |
Defender is not the primary antivirus. Enterprise configuration, Defender for Endpoint, or Smart App Control may be involved. | Check whether the PC is managed and consult the administrator before changing policy. |
| Real-time protection Off while mode is Normal | Defender is active but continuous monitoring is not currently enabled. | Use Manage settings to turn it On, unless the control is managed or unavailable. |
| Real-time protection control is greyed out | A policy or managed security configuration controls the setting. | Contact the device administrator and provide the provider and PowerShell results. |
| Quick scan completes but no provider is listed | An on-demand scan result alone does not establish provider registration. | Resolve the provider and mode discrepancy before treating protection as fully restored. |
What should a final post-uninstall checklist look like?
- Windows Security opens without an error.
- Virus & threat protection > Manage providers lists Microsoft Defender Antivirus when Defender is intended to be primary.
Get-MpComputerStatusreturnsAMRunningMode : Normalfor active mode.- Manage settings > Real-time protection shows On.
- Cloud-delivered protection and Automatic sample submission are enabled when you control the settings and want Microsoft’s recommended configuration.
- A Quick scan completes.
- Protection history shows the resulting scan or any action Defender took.
- If any item is unavailable or contradictory, you have recorded the exact state and escalated it to the device administrator where appropriate.
The key distinction is that “Defender appears on the PC” is not the same as “Defender is the active antivirus.” Provider registration, AMRunningMode, Real-time protection, and a completed scan establish those facts in sequence.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Quick scan prove that real-time protection is enabled?
No. A Quick scan is an on-demand operation; it shows that Defender can scan when asked. Real-time protection must be checked separately in Virus & threat protection > Manage settings because continuous monitoring is controlled by its own switch.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What should I send support if Defender shows Passive on my work PC?
Send the provider listing, the complete output from Get-MpComputerStatus, and the state of the Real-time protection control. Include whether the computer is managed by your employer or school, since policy and Defender for Endpoint can determine the displayed mode.
Why is MsMpEng.exe visible even though Defender is not the primary antivirus?
The process indicates that Defender is enabled, not necessarily that it is the primary provider. Supported enterprise configurations can allow scanning in Passive mode, so verify AMRunningMode and the registered provider instead of relying on Task Manager alone.
How should I interpret an empty Protection history after the scan?
Protection history records actions and detections, not a permanent audit of every clean scan. A blank page can coexist with a clean Quick scan; use the scan result, provider page, and PowerShell mode together, and remember that events are retained for only two weeks.
