Look at Maximum Capacity, Peak Performance Capability, and any service or replacement message. Apple does not set one capacity percentage that automatically means every iPhone battery must be replaced; consider the alert alongside runtime, shutdowns, and performance.
How to check iPhone battery health
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Choose the health screen for your model: Battery Health on iPhone 15 models and later with iOS 17.4 or later, or Battery Health & Charging on iPhone 11, 12, 13, or 14.
- Review Maximum Capacity, Peak Performance Capability, and any message about service or replacement.
Labels and the details shown vary by model and iOS version. On iPhone 15 models and later with iOS 17.4 or later, the screen can also show cycle count, manufacture date, and first-use date. Apple’s iPhone battery guidance describes the available information.

What the battery health readings mean
Maximum Capacity
Maximum Capacity compares the battery’s capacity now with its capacity when new. As the battery chemically ages, it holds less charge, so the iPhone may run for fewer hours between charges. A figure slightly below 100% can be normal, including when time has passed between manufacture and activation.

Peak Performance Capability
This describes whether the battery can provide the instantaneous power the iPhone needs. Capacity and peak performance are related, but they are not the same: a battery may hold less charge and still support normal peak performance. As a battery ages, higher internal impedance can make it less able to deliver peak power. In some cases, after an unexpected shutdown, iOS applies performance management to help prevent another shutdown.

Apple may show the message “Your battery is currently supporting normal peak performance.” If the battery cannot provide the required peak power, the performance information may instead describe performance management or recommend service.
Battery life versus battery lifespan
Battery life means how long an iPhone runs before it needs recharging. Battery lifespan means how long its battery lasts before it needs replacement. Chemical aging is affected by charge cycles and care as well as calendar time; the two terms describe different things.

When to replace an iPhone battery
Arrange service when iOS displays a replacement recommendation or a significantly degraded battery message. Apple’s alert wording, “Your battery’s health is significantly degraded,” means battery and performance problems may be more noticeable. Apple says the message does not indicate a safety issue, and that an Apple Authorized Service Provider can replace the battery to restore full performance and capacity. Even without an alert, consider service if the phone no longer lasts as long as you need between charges, shuts down unexpectedly, or has performance problems you associate with its battery. The right timing depends on how dependable the phone needs to be for your daily use.

How to interpret Apple’s cycle-count figures
Apple says batteries in iPhone 14 models and earlier are designed to retain 80% of their original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles, and batteries in iPhone 15 models are designed to retain 80% at 1,000 complete charge cycles. These are design targets under ideal conditions, not mandatory replacement deadlines or guarantees for an individual phone. Actual capacity depends on usage and charging habits. Apple’s guidance and its model-specific battery instructions provide details.
What to do if the reading may be unreliable
iPhone 11 battery-health recalibration
For iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max, iOS 14.5 introduced recalibration to address inaccurate battery-health estimates affecting some users. During recalibration, which may take a few weeks of regular charge cycles, the maximum-capacity percentage does not change. If your phone indicates that recalibration is underway, wait for its result before treating the displayed percentage as a final service signal. Apple explains the recalibration process.

Battery cannot be verified
If an iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, or later says it cannot verify the battery as genuine, Apple warns that the battery-health details may not be accurate. Have the battery checked by a service provider. Apple’s battery verification guidance explains this warning.
How to arrange battery service
Apple’s guidance recommends an Apple Authorized Service Provider when a degraded battery needs replacement. Before booking, check service eligibility for your exact iPhone model and location. Apple says its one-year warranty includes coverage for a defective battery, in addition to any rights under local consumer law; out-of-warranty service is available for a charge. Costs and eligibility depend on model, warranty status, and region, so check the current terms for your location rather than relying on a price for another model or country.
