Stardew Valley has two related but separate luck systems: daily luck, a day-long modifier reported by the Fortune Teller, and luck buffs, temporary bonuses from items such as food, drinks, and rings. Luck can influence several outcomes, but its effect varies by activity—it is not a universal percentage added to every chance.
What daily luck means
Daily luck is randomly generated at the start of each day, ranging from -0.1 to 0.1, according to the Stardew Valley Wiki. The Fortune Teller program on the television gives an indication of the day’s modifier. Watching the program does not set or change that day’s luck.

Daily luck can influence several game outcomes, including finding ladders after breaking rocks while mining, geode and coal drops from rocks, and the chance of finding Gem Nodes and Mystic Stones in the Mines or Skull Cavern. The size and role of luck differ by outcome. A daily luck value of 0.1 does not mean every activity receives a flat 10% increase; the Wiki notes that luck is handled differently in individual situations.

How temporary luck buffs work
Some food, drinks, and other game sources provide temporary luck bonuses. These buffs are separate from daily luck, even where their effects overlap. For example, the Lucky Ring gives +1 Luck, while Lucky Lunch provides a +3 Luck buff, as listed by the Lucky Ring and Lucky Lunch entries in the Stardew Valley Wiki.
Do not treat the displayed numbers as interchangeable measures of a single universal percentage. Daily luck and temporary buffs are different mechanics, and what matters depends on the activity you plan to do.

Buffs generally replace an existing buff from the same source category: eating buff food replaces the previous food buff, and drinking a new buff drink replaces the prior drink buff. A food buff and a drink buff can generally be active together. Because Luck is available as a buff from both categories, a luck food and a luck drink can coexist.

This category-based rule is more useful than simply choosing the item with the biggest number: check whether your desired buffs come from food or drink and whether you already have a buff in that slot.

Choosing a luck setup for an activity
- Check the day: Use the Fortune Teller for an indication of daily luck; the broadcast is informational and does not alter it.
- Decide what you are doing: Luck affects multiple outcomes, but not in the same way for every activity.
- Check the buff source and duration: Temporary food and drink effects are separate from daily luck.
- Use both buff categories when useful: A food buff and a drink buff can coexist, while a second food or second drink buff generally replaces the one already active in that category.
