To estimate your pension’s AI exposure, identify every fund in your pot, obtain its latest holdings disclosure, classify holdings as direct AI or AI-enabling, and weight each estimate by that fund’s share of your pension. Your provider may show company names, but a top-10 list or an equity-only report cannot support a precise whole-pot percentage. Record the holdings date, publication date, scope and missing asset classes, then label the result as an estimate rather than a provider-certified figure.
The method below is designed around UK workplace and personal pensions. The same logic works elsewhere, but disclosure rules, fund names and reporting dates depend on your provider and jurisdiction.

What does “invested in AI companies” actually mean?
There is no single universally reported AI-percentage figure. A pension can own companies that build AI models, firms that supply the computing and data-centre infrastructure, or diversified businesses that use AI without being classified as technology companies.
Direct AI exposure
Count a company as direct exposure when its principal business is developing or selling artificial-intelligence software, models, applications or specialist services. A specialist AI fund should also be shown in this category, with its own disclosed holdings examined where possible.

AI-enabling exposure
Keep a separate total for semiconductors, cloud computing, data-centre infrastructure, networking equipment, power and utilities, real estate and other businesses whose products or assets support AI deployment. The Pensions Regulator (TPR) warns that AI exposure can cross technology, infrastructure, energy, real estate and financial assets, so a technology-sector screen alone can miss material links.
Why the distinction matters
Combining both categories produces a broader estimate, but it is less tightly defined. Reporting the direct and broader figures side by side makes your classification rule visible and prevents an apparently precise number from hiding judgement calls.

How do I identify the exact funds inside my pension?
Start with the funds, not a company search. A label such as “Global Equity” does not identify the underlying securities, and a retirement-date fund may contain several underlying mandates.
- Sign in to the pension account. Use the provider’s website or app and open the investment, funds or holdings area.
- Copy the exact fund names. Record the fund or retirement-date fund name, provider, scheme and, where shown, the fund code, share class or ISIN.
- Record the current pot value and allocation. Write down each fund’s percentage of the pot, not just its pound value. Include any cash or other allocation shown on the account.
- List every pension arrangement. Repeat the process for old workplace pensions, personal pensions and any additional voluntary contribution account. A single workplace login may contain more than one fund.
Save a dated screenshot or statement alongside your notes. Fund allocations can change through contributions, rebalancing or a retirement-date glidepath, so the percentage you use in the calculation must relate to the same period as your holdings estimate as closely as possible.
Where can I get a fund’s latest holdings?
Use the most recent primary disclosure your provider makes available, and move from a summary document to a full holdings file when one exists.
- Check the provider’s holdings portal. Some portals let members search individual companies or download a spreadsheet.
- Download the factsheet and key-information document. A factsheet, KID or KIID can identify the legal fund and investment mandate, but it may show only a small selection of holdings.
- Look for annual and half-year reports. These can include asset classes that a company list omits, such as property, government bonds and other investments.
- Search for the underlying pooled vehicle. If your pension fund invests in an insurer’s or asset manager’s pooled fund, the pension page may not list the securities. Ask for the pooled vehicle’s holdings report and match the vehicle name or identifier.
- Ask for a look-through file if no public file exists. Request the holdings, percentage weight, asset class, domicile or country exposure, identifier and “holdings as at” date.
The Financial Conduct Authority’s portfolio fields provide a useful checklist: asset name, ISIN or another identifier, asset class, domicile, country exposure and percentage of portfolio. You may not receive every field from every provider, but asking for them reduces ambiguity.

Nest’s online tool lists companies, while its quarterly investment reports also cover property, government bonds and other investment types. Nest says its company data is refreshed every three months. That combination is more useful than a document containing only the ten largest shares because it gives both company-level detail and a view of non-equity assets.
How do I check whether the holdings are current and complete?
Every result needs two dates and a scope statement. Write down the date on which the portfolio was measured and the date on which the document was published.

- “Holdings as at” date: the point in time represented by the portfolio.
- Publication or download date: when the provider released the file or page.
- Scope: equities only, the whole fund, a share class, or an underlying pooled vehicle.
- Coverage: full holdings, top holdings, selected assets or asset-class totals.
A report published today may describe a portfolio from several months earlier. Prices, index membership, mergers and portfolio trades can change the weights after the as-of date. A top-10 list is not a full portfolio, and a list of companies may omit derivatives, private assets, bonds, property and cash. State those omissions beside your estimate.
How should I classify companies connected to AI?
Use a written rule before adding weights. Applying the same rule to every fund makes comparisons meaningful and lets you revise the result without silently changing the definition.
Build a direct-AI list
Identify companies whose disclosed business is primarily AI development or AI software and services. Include a specialist AI fund only after checking whether its own portfolio would otherwise cause double counting. If a fund-of-funds holds another fund, count the underlying exposure once in the consolidated result.
Build an enabling-sector list
Mark semiconductor manufacturers and equipment suppliers, cloud and data-centre operators, networking businesses, power and utilities serving data-centre demand, relevant real-estate assets and other infrastructure providers. Keep these weights outside the direct total.
Handle diversified companies consistently
A conglomerate may earn only part of its revenue from AI-related activities. Unless the disclosure provides a defensible segment percentage, do not invent one. Either exclude it from the direct total and explain why, or place the entire holding in the broader category under a clearly stated rule.
Record uncertain cases
Keep a working note with the company name, identifier, category and reason. If a disclosure gives only a sector label, say that the classification is sector-based. If you cannot establish whether a holding is AI-linked, leave it outside the calculated total and identify it as an unclassified holding rather than guessing.

How do I calculate AI exposure for one fund?
Add the disclosed portfolio weights of the holdings in each category. Use the same denominator for every holding: normally the total fund portfolio represented by the report.
- Copy each disclosed holding weight into a worksheet.
- Assign “direct”, “enabling”, “other” or “unclassified” using your written rule.
- Add all direct weights to obtain the fund’s direct-AI estimate.
- Add enabling weights separately to obtain the broader AI-linked estimate.
- Check whether the weights sum to the report’s stated total. If the report is equities-only, do not present the result as a whole-fund percentage.
- Attach the as-of date, publication date, scope and omissions to both totals.
For example, if a fund disclosure supports an estimated 8% direct-AI weight, report “8% direct exposure, holdings as at [date], based on the disclosed scope,” rather than implying that the provider publishes an official AI percentage. If only the largest holdings are available, the sum is a lower bound: smaller positions and omitted asset classes could add exposure.

How do I combine several funds into one pension percentage?
Weight each fund estimate by that fund’s share of your pot, then add the contributions. This converts fund-level estimates into a personal estimate without pretending that any provider has calculated it for you.
Use this formula:
pension direct-AI exposure = Σ (fund share of pot × fund direct-AI estimate)
Suppose Fund A is 60% of the pot and its estimated direct exposure is 8%. Its contribution is 0.60 × 8% = 4.8 percentage points of the whole pension. Repeat the multiplication for every other fund and add the results. Apply the same process to the enabling estimate to produce a separate broader total.
Do not add the percentages without weighting them. A 10% exposure in a fund that represents 5% of your pot contributes 0.5 percentage points, not 10 percentage points. If a retirement-date fund changes its underlying allocation over time, use the allocation shown on the same account date as your calculation and record the date.
What can I do when the provider does not disclose full holdings?
Ask for the missing information in writing and escalate through the scheme’s governance channels if necessary.
Questions to send the provider
- Which legal fund or pooled vehicle holds my contributions?
- Can you provide the complete holdings, including non-equity assets, and the percentage of the fund represented by each?
- What are the “holdings as at” and publication dates?
- Does the file include derivatives, private assets, bonds, property, cash and other funds?
- Can you provide the underlying holdings when my named pension fund invests through another vehicle?
- How often is the holdings data refreshed?
Escalation routes
If the answer is incomplete, contact the scheme trustees, the independent governance committee for a contract-based workplace pension, or your employer’s pensions contact. Some schemes provide a dedicated transparency dashboard. The London Pension Fund Authority’s Tumelo dashboard, for example, displayed individual equity company names and biographies and was updated quarterly.

How should I compare two pension funds for AI concentration?
Compare the same measures, dates and definitions. A lower direct-AI number does not automatically mean lower overall risk if the fund has large enabling, market or geographic concentrations.

| Comparison measure | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Direct-AI weight | Shows the estimated share in companies or funds primarily associated with AI |
| Broader enabling weight | Captures infrastructure and adjacent sectors that a technology-only screen misses |
| Largest single holding | Reveals dependence on one company even when the category total looks moderate |
| Top-10 concentration | Shows how much of the disclosed portfolio sits in its largest positions |
| Overlap with your other funds | Prevents apparently different funds from hiding the same companies |
| Geographic and currency exposure | Separates AI concentration from country and currency risks |
| Passive or active management | Explains whether weights largely follow an index or reflect manager decisions |
| Charges | Provides a cost comparison alongside exposure and diversification |
| Disclosure completeness | Indicates whether the estimate covers a full portfolio or only selected holdings |
| Update frequency | Shows how quickly the information can reflect portfolio changes |
TPR specifically notes that market-capitalisation-weighted passive strategies can become more concentrated as related companies rise. Compare the actual company overlap and top-position weights rather than assuming that a fund labelled “diversified” has little AI exposure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why can a diversified pension still have hidden AI concentration?
AI-related businesses are embedded across sectors and can occupy a large share of major market indices. A fund can therefore hold many companies and still depend heavily on a smaller group of AI-linked businesses through index weights, suppliers and infrastructure.
TPR’s guidance, AI concentration risk: Action for trustees, published 22 October 2026, says: “Even a diversified portfolio may have hidden concentration risk because AI is increasingly embedded across sectors.” The guidance is written for trustees, but members can use the same idea when asking for aggregate exposure across all of their funds.
TPR’s accompanying 2026 press release reported that global private AI investment rose 127.5% year on year in 2025. That is a market statistic, not a measurement of your pension. It signals why disclosure and concentration analysis matter, but it cannot be substituted for your own fund holdings.
What do UK pension data limitations mean for an individual member?
System-wide pension statistics cannot reveal your personal AI percentage. The Pensions Policy Institute describes pension-asset data as “multiple, partial and inconsistent,” with different coverage for trust-based schemes, contract-based pensions, insurers and public-sector arrangements.
The institute’s 2024 analysis covered about £3 trillion of UK pension assets. That scale helps explain why national totals are useful for policy analysis but unsuitable for identifying the holdings in one member’s pot. Your provider’s fund, share class, allocation and reporting date remain the controlling evidence.
How often should I repeat the calculation?
Repeat it when your fund allocation changes and whenever a newer holdings file is released. A quarterly cadence is practical when the provider updates quarterly; Nest says its company data is refreshed every three months.
Keep a simple record containing the account date, fund allocations, document names, as-of dates, classification rule, direct total, broader total and excluded assets. On the next review, compare changes in the largest holdings and overlap before comparing headline percentages. This makes it clear whether a change came from market movement, a fund rebalance, a new disclosure or a change in your own contributions.

What should the finished result look like?
A useful statement is transparent about both its conclusion and its limits:
- Funds covered: exact fund names and each fund’s share of the pot.
- Direct estimate: the weighted percentage attributed to direct AI holdings.
- Broader estimate: the weighted percentage attributed to AI-enabling holdings.
- Evidence dates: holdings-as-at and publication dates for every fund.
- Scope: whole fund, equities only, top holdings or underlying pooled vehicle.
- Exclusions: derivatives, private assets, bonds, property, cash or unclassified holdings that were not covered.
- Method: the classification rule and the fund-weighting calculation.
If you have only a top-10 list, say that the result is a partial or lower-bound estimate. If the provider supplies a full look-through file, say what it covers and still preserve the dates because holdings change after publication.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an index fund own AI companies without calling itself an AI fund?
Yes. A broad market index can acquire sizeable positions in AI-linked businesses as their market values rise, even when the fund has no AI label. Check the actual holdings and index methodology rather than relying on the fund name.
Should I treat a cash allocation as zero AI exposure?
Only if the disclosure identifies it as cash and gives no underlying investment exposure. If the provider groups cash with a pooled vehicle or does not show the underlying assets, record the allocation as outside your verified estimate instead of assigning it a guessed percentage.
What wording should I use when requesting look-through data?
Ask for the complete portfolio for your exact fund or pooled vehicle, the percentage weight and identifier for each asset, and both the holdings-as-at and publication dates. Also ask whether derivatives, private assets, bonds, property, cash and other funds are included.
Does a high AI estimate mean I should transfer my pension?
Not by itself. A transfer can affect charges, guarantees, investment choice and retirement benefits, so compare the complete arrangement and obtain regulated financial advice before acting on an exposure estimate.
Can my AI percentage change even if I make no contributions?
Yes. Market prices, index weights, fund trades and retirement-date rebalancing can alter the proportion over time. That is why each calculation should retain its measurement date and be revisited when newer holdings data appears.
