Check the game’s official service status before restarting your router or changing network settings. In about three minutes, identify the exact game, launcher or platform, device, region, and symptom; read the publisher’s status page at that same scope; note the incident time and state; then test your own connection only if the service appears healthy. This prevents you from “fixing” a home network during scheduled maintenance and helps explain cases where friends can play while your region, platform, or account cannot.
What should I check first when a game will not connect?
Start by defining the service boundary. Write down the game, launcher or platform, device, region, and exact failure. “The game is down” can mean a title-wide outage, a console-network incident, a regional shard problem, a single component such as authentication, or a fault on your own connection.

- Symptom: distinguish login failure, matchmaking error, repeated disconnects, store failure, voice chat failure, or an error after joining a match.
- Timing: record when it began and whether it started after a patch, maintenance notice, or network change.
With those details written down, open the game publisher’s first-party status page. Steam Support specifically directs players to its Steam Server Status page to rule out system-wide downtime. Activision’s Online Services page lets you check the selected game and linked Xbox, PlayStation, Battle.net, Nintendo, Steam, Epic Games, and Ubisoft+ services. Use the publisher page for the game and the platform page for the device; either one can be the failing boundary.
How do I read an official game-server status page?
Do not stop at a green headline. Match the incident’s scope to your setup and read its timestamp, affected component, and current state.

Check title, platform, region, and component
Riot’s service-status page identifies the game, region, platform, current messages, recently closed incidents, and scheduled maintenance. That layout matters because one regional shard or platform can fail while another remains available. EA separates individual game status from platform servers. Ubisoft pages can show PC, PS4, and Xbox One independently. Rockstar reports title, platform, and components such as authentication, launcher, store, and online services.

Understand common status labels

A resolved label does not guarantee that every cached login token or route has recovered at the same moment. It means the provider has closed the incident; your next test should establish whether your own session has caught up.

Use this sequence before rebooting equipment repeatedly. It preserves useful evidence and prevents a local change from obscuring a provider outage.
- Define the failure. Record title, launcher or platform, device, region, symptom, error text, and start time.
- Open the first-party page. Use the publisher’s service-status page, then the console or PC platform’s status page where applicable.
- Match the scope. Select the exact game, platform, region, and component. A general green banner is not enough if matchmaking or authentication is listed separately.
- Read the timeline. Note incident start, last update, maintenance end time, and whether the operator says investigating, identified, monitoring, or resolved.
- Compare an independent session. Ask a friend on the same game and platform, or test another title that uses the same platform account. Different results can reveal a platform, region, or account boundary.
- Wait through a posted window. Recheck after the stated maintenance end instead of repeatedly changing DNS, firewall, or router settings.
- Begin local testing only when the relevant services are operational. Keep the incident time and your test time in your notes.
Why can my friends play while I cannot?
Different availability is usually explained by scope rather than a contradiction. Your friends may use another platform, region, network route, game component, or account state.

Platform-specific incidents
EA lists game servers separately from platform servers, and Activision links status checks for major console and PC services. If a console network has an account or authentication incident, players on PC may continue normally. Conversely, a PC launcher problem can leave console players unaffected.
Regional or shard outages
Riot’s regional listings illustrate how one shard can be impaired while other regions remain operational. Check the region selected in your game and the region named in the incident, especially after travel, a server migration, or an automatic region change.

Component failures
Rockstar’s component-level reporting distinguishes authentication, launcher, store, and online services. You may launch a title successfully but fail when signing in, entering matchmaking, opening the store, or using voice features.
Account or session problems
If the status page is healthy and other players on your exact platform and region are online, your account session may be stale or blocked. Sign out and back in only after recording the original error; preserve any code that support may need.

What should I do when official services are operational?
Escalate from the least disruptive test to the most informative one. Change one variable at a time so you know which action affected the result.
- Restart the game and launcher. Exit fully rather than leaving the process suspended. Reopen the launcher, allow it to refresh authentication, and test once.
- Restart the PC or console. This clears a suspended network session, pending system process, or failed background update.
- Install pending updates. Check the game, launcher, operating system, console firmware, and network or graphics drivers. A client on an older build may be rejected even while servers are online.
- Test a direct wired connection. Connect the device directly to the router with Ethernet and repeat the same login or matchmaking test. Steam recommends this to isolate wireless or powerline interference; it is an isolation test, not proof that the servers are healthy.
- Review firewall and security rules. Confirm that the game and launcher are allowed on the correct private or public network profile. Avoid disabling protection globally; create a narrow exception only when you understand the rule and can undo it.
- Close interfering background applications. Overlays, traffic shapers, VPNs, capture tools, and aggressive security software can interrupt authentication or real-time traffic. Disable one suspected application, test, and restore it if it made no difference.
- Scan for unwanted software. Steam lists spyware, adware, and viruses among possible causes of connectivity trouble. Run your installed security tool, quarantine anything it finds, reboot, and test again.
- Check router configuration. Confirm that the router has an internet connection, is not reporting a firmware or WAN error, and has not recently changed parental-control, port, or quality-of-service settings. SEGA also advises checking modem/router configuration and synchronized device time.
When should I check my ISP?
Contact or check your internet provider after the game and platform status pages show no relevant outage and the basic device tests fail. Epic Games advises checking the ISP for outages or performance problems, rebooting the router, and contacting the device manufacturer if the issue remains.
Use the provider’s outage map or support channel for your service address. Ask whether there is packet loss, regional maintenance, authentication trouble, or congestion rather than reporting only that one game fails. If possible, compare the game over a phone hotspot. A hotspot that works while home broadband fails points toward your router, ISP route, or local Wi-Fi, but it does not prove that the game service is healthy; the official status page remains the authority for that question.

No single test is conclusive. A mobile hotspot can use a different route, and a friend may be on a different shard. The strongest diagnosis comes from combining the provider’s scope with a repeatable test on your own setup.
What should I record before contacting support?
Support can act faster when you provide a compact timeline instead of a general statement that the game is broken.

- UTC or local start time, last successful login, and each retry time.

- Whether another title, device, friend, Ethernet connection, or hotspot worked.
- Updates installed, router restart time, firewall change, and any security scan result.
- Screenshot or short video showing the failure without exposing passwords, recovery codes, or payment details.
Keep the provider’s incident timestamp beside your own test timestamps. This avoids mistaking a recovered outage with a new local failure and gives support a sequence they can correlate with logs.

What mistakes make connection troubleshooting take longer?
- Restarting everything before checking status: repeated reboots waste time during maintenance and erase useful timing clues.
- Reading only a global banner: a green overall page can hide a regional, platform, or component incident.
- Changing several settings at once: you lose the ability to identify the fix and may create a second problem.
- Treating Ethernet as proof: wired testing isolates Wi-Fi or powerline issues; it cannot certify that remote servers are online.
- Ignoring updates and clock settings: outdated clients or unsynchronized time can break authentication even when servers operate normally.

How often should I recheck a reported outage?
Follow the incident’s update cadence and maintenance end time rather than refreshing continuously. During “monitoring,” retry periodically because a fix is being observed. After “resolved,” restart the affected client once to clear cached authentication, then run the same test you used before. If the official page stays healthy while your failure continues, return to the local escalation order and contact your ISP or device manufacturer with the recorded timeline.

Can I check game server status from inside the game?
Some launchers display maintenance banners or login errors, but an in-game message may be stale or limited to one component. Use the publisher and platform status pages for the authoritative scope and timeline, especially when the game will not launch.
Does changing DNS fix a game-server outage?
DNS changes cannot repair a provider-side maintenance event or disabled matchmaking component. Consider DNS only after status is operational and ordinary router, update, firewall, and ISP checks point to name-resolution trouble.
Why does voice chat fail while matches still work?
Voice can rely on a separate platform or component from matchmaking. Check the platform and publisher pages for component-specific incidents, then test another voice channel before changing game network settings.
Should I reinstall the game when servers are down?
No. Reinstallation does not shorten scheduled maintenance and can introduce update or account-session problems. Preserve your error details, wait for the stated window, and reinstall only when local files are specifically implicated after services recover.
