Check an AI recommendation as a claim to investigate, not as proof. Before acting on it, identify the decision it supports and who may be affected; verify consequential facts against current authoritative evidence; look for missing constraints and uneven effects across groups; and make sure a qualified person can challenge or override the output. A fluent, confident explanation is not evidence that the recommendation is accurate or fair.

What should I check before trusting an AI recommendation?

Start with the recommendation’s purpose, intended population, and stakes. A system may perform acceptably for the task and group it was designed and evaluated for, yet be unsuitable for a different decision or population. You cannot judge its output fairly until you know what it is meant to do and what errors would matter.

Define the decision and who bears the consequences

Write down the decision the recommendation is supposed to inform, who will use it, and who may benefit or be harmed. Clarify whether AI is offering one input to a human decision or making an automated decision itself. Also state what level of risk is acceptable: a mistaken suggestion for a low-stakes draft is different from an error that could affect someone’s rights, safety, access, or livelihood.

If the goal is vague—for example, “find the best candidate” without defining the job requirements or the evidence that matters—there is no clear standard for assessing whether the result is appropriate. Ask what outcome the system is trying to predict or optimize, and whether that outcome is a sound measure of the real goal.

Check whether the system fits this use

Find out what the model or service was designed and evaluated to do, which population and conditions were covered, and what limitations are known. A benchmark result from one task or group does not establish accuracy for a different setting. Ask whether language, location, time period, accessibility needs, unusual cases, or changing conditions could make the recommendation less reliable.

When a system’s intended use or evaluation details are not available, treat that as an important limit on what you can conclude. A confident answer cannot fill in missing evidence about whether the system works for this decision.

How can I check the facts in an AI answer?

Break the recommendation into specific claims that can be checked, then verify each consequential claim independently. Prefer current primary documents, regulators, standards bodies, official statistics, or qualified domain experts; do not rely on the AI’s wording or citations alone.

Separate claims from advice and prediction

Underline statements that the recommendation depends on: dates, rules, definitions, statistics, descriptions of a person or situation, and claims about what is likely to happen. Check the factual statements first. Predictions and advice also need scrutiny, but they depend on assumptions and judgments as well as facts, so ask what evidence and conditions support them.

For every source the system names, confirm that the source exists, is current enough for the question, and supports the specific claim. Check that the source’s geography, time period, definitions, and population match the recommendation. A real source can still be cited inaccurately or used to support a broader conclusion than it warrants.

Use a claim-check record

A small record prevents an impressive-sounding answer from becoming its own evidence. For each important claim, note the wording, the independent evidence you checked, and any difference between what the evidence establishes and what the recommendation says.

  • Claim: What exactly does the system assert?
  • Evidence: Which authoritative source or expert independently supports or contradicts it?
  • Fit: Do the source’s date, location, definitions, and population match this case?
  • Disposition: Is the claim confirmed, contradicted, uncertain, or not checked—and does that change the recommendation?

Give extra attention to uncited specifics, precise-looking numbers without a clear basis, and confident predictions. The UK government’s guidance on generative AI warns that large language models can produce “plausible but factually incorrect information.” Plausibility is a reason to verify, not a substitute for verification.

How do I know if an AI recommendation is biased?

Look beyond whether the answer sounds neutral. Bias can enter through the data used to train or operate a system, the way outcomes were measured or labeled, proxy variables, evaluation choices, or human use of the output. The practical question is whether the system’s errors or consequences differ unfairly for people in the actual context.

Ask who is represented—and who is missing

Check who appears in the data and evaluation, and whether the relevant population is represented well enough for this decision. Data may be stale, selectively collected, or thin for particular groups or circumstances. A system’s performance on the people it has seen most often does not establish how it will perform for people or situations that were poorly represented.

Ask how the target label was created and whether it measures the outcome that matters. A historical label can reflect earlier human decisions rather than an objective measure of need or ability. If a label is an imperfect stand-in for the real goal, a model may learn to reproduce the imperfections.

Look for proxy variables and measurement problems

A system can use a variable that appears unrelated to a sensitive characteristic but still carries similar information. Consider whether inputs or labels could act as proxies, and whether measurements were gathered consistently across groups. The relevant concern is not only whether a sensitive attribute was explicitly included; it is also whether the signals used by the system encode unequal histories or access to measurement.

Compare the kinds of errors that matter

Where evaluation information is available, ask for subgroup results in the population relevant to the decision. Compare false positives and false negatives as well as precision and recall: these measure different failure modes, and improving one can involve a trade-off with another. Which error is more harmful depends on the decision, the people affected, and what happens after an error.

A single overall score can conceal differences between groups or between common and unusual cases. If the system’s maker cannot provide relevant subgroup evaluation, that does not prove the system is biased, but it leaves a key question unanswered. Do not infer fairness from a favorable aggregate result or a benchmark conducted in a different setting.

As NIST authors Apostol Vassilev, Harold Booth, and Murugiah Souppaya put it in Mitigating AI/ML Bias in Context (2022), “Managing bias in an AI system is critical to establishing and maintaining trust in its operation.” The context matters: fairness and acceptable error cannot be assessed in isolation from the decision and its consequences.

What context might the AI have left out?

Test what the recommendation assumes and what facts could change it. Missing context can make an otherwise plausible answer unsafe or unsuitable, especially when it overlooks affected stakeholders, local requirements, time-sensitive facts, or uncommon circumstances.

Ask focused questions

Use questions that expose the boundaries of the recommendation rather than asking for a more confident restatement:

  • What assumptions does this recommendation depend on?
  • What facts, if different, would change it?
  • Which stakeholders or constraints were not considered?
  • Does it account for the relevant location, time period, language, accessibility needs, and unusual cases?
  • What alternatives were considered, and what are their trade-offs?
  • What downstream effects could follow if this recommendation is wrong?

You can ask the system to list “what would change this recommendation?” Use that list to find gaps, not as proof that the system has identified every important factor. Verify the suggested conditions independently and ask people with relevant knowledge about constraints the prompt did not include.

Check the scope of the answer

Compare the recommendation with the actual question and the information available to the system. Did it silently assume a particular jurisdiction, definition, time frame, goal, or set of priorities? Did it treat missing information as if it had been supplied? If an essential fact is unknown, mark it as unknown and obtain it before treating the output as actionable.

How should I assess uncertainty and explanations?

Ask what evidence supports the output, how the system was validated for this use, and what limitations or failure modes are known. Seek an uncertainty estimate or validation result when one is available, but do not mistake a number or a persuasive explanation for proof of reliability.

Do not treat confidence as correctness

Some systems do not provide a calibrated confidence measure, and conversational phrasing such as “I’m sure” is not a dependable substitute. Ask what uncertainty information the system actually reports and how it was validated. Where appropriate, look for error bars or confidence intervals and clarify what population and conditions they describe.

The UK Information Commissioner’s Office says it is good practice to communicate the inherent uncertainty of AI-driven decisions and predictions. If uncertainty is substantial, evidence is incomplete, or consequences are serious, get more human input or independent evidence before proceeding.

Judge explanations by their evidence

A useful explanation should make it possible to examine relevant inputs, transformations, decision criteria, and limitations. A coherent narrative may still be incomplete or factually wrong, so check each factual assertion and ask whether the explanation addresses the actual basis of the recommendation. Do not conclude that a model is unbiased because it gives reasons or cites a source.

How do I compare two AI recommendations?

Compare the quality and fit of their evidence, not their length or confidence. Two systems can disagree because they use different assumptions, sources, objectives, or error trade-offs; neither answer wins simply by being more detailed.

What to compare Questions to ask
Use-case fit Was each system designed and evaluated for this task, population, and set of conditions?
Evidence and recency Are important claims traceable to current, relevant sources, and do those sources support the wording?
Coverage Does either answer account for the facts, constraints, affected people, and edge cases that matter?
Subgroup performance Is there relevant evaluation for different groups, including comparisons of error patterns?
Error trade-offs What are the costs of false positives and false negatives for this specific decision?
Uncertainty Does either answer explain uncertainty and the limits of its validation?
Accountability Can an informed reviewer inspect the basis, challenge the result, and override it?

When the systems disagree, trace the disagreement back to claims, assumptions, and missing facts. Verify the claims independently, then decide whether the difference matters to the outcome. If neither recommendation has adequate evidence for a consequential decision, the disagreement is a reason to escalate or seek qualified advice—not to choose the more polished answer.

What should a human reviewer do before acting?

Human review is meaningful only when the reviewer can question the recommendation, has enough information and training to assess it, and has authority to change or reject it. A person who must accept the output without scrutiny is not providing an effective safeguard.

Use a documented decision record

  1. Capture the basis: Record the system or service, the prompt or inputs needed to interpret the output, the recommendation, the date, and any cited evidence.
  2. Record the review: Note which consequential claims were verified, which uncertainties or missing facts remain, and any relevant concerns about fit, representation, or error patterns.
  3. Explain the decision: State why the output was accepted, modified, or rejected. Record the human reasoning rather than copying the system’s explanation.
  4. Escalate when needed: Route high-impact, ambiguous, or poorly supported cases to an independent reviewer or appropriate subject-matter expert.
  5. Review outcomes: Where the system is used repeatedly, track overrides and outcomes for signs that the system or its human reviewers produce systematically different results for particular groups.

Reviewers need permission to override without penalty; otherwise, automation bias can lead people to defer to a system even when they have reasons to doubt it. For high-impact decisions, independent review and a clear escalation path help ensure that uncertainty is not quietly converted into an unexamined decision. The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner describes AI outputs as “statistically informed guesses”—a useful reminder that an output still needs accountable judgment.

What quick checklist can I use?

Before relying on a consequential recommendation, check each item that applies. A missing answer is a prompt to investigate, not a detail to fill in by assumption.

  • Is the decision and its intended use clearly defined?
  • Do I know who is affected and what the risks of error are?
  • Was the system designed and evaluated for this task and population?
  • Have I checked important claims against current, relevant evidence?
  • Do the cited sources support the exact claims, including their dates and scope?
  • Could the data, labels, measurements, or inputs be stale, selective, or proxy sensitive characteristics?
  • Are subgroup results and the relevant error trade-offs available?
  • What assumptions, stakeholders, constraints, or edge cases may be missing?
  • Is uncertainty visible, and do I understand the limits of any explanation?
  • Can a trained, accountable person reject or override the output and escalate difficult cases?

There is no universal accuracy percentage that establishes whether an AI recommendation is trustworthy for every task. Evaluation needs to match the use, population, error costs, uncertainty, and ongoing monitoring required in context.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use another AI tool to fact-check an AI recommendation?

It can help you identify claims to verify or suggest questions to ask, but its answer is another AI output, not independent confirmation. For consequential claims, check authoritative evidence or consult a qualified person.

What if the AI provider will not share its training data?

You may still be able to ask for intended-use information, validation results, known limitations, and relevant subgroup performance. If those details are unavailable, be explicit that you cannot establish how well the system applies to your case, and scale back reliance accordingly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I paste a person’s information into an AI tool to check a recommendation?

Do not share personal or confidential information unless you are authorized to do so and the tool’s privacy and data-handling terms permit that use. Where possible, remove identifying details and seek review through an approved process.

Does a recommendation become fair if a human approves it?

No. Human approval only adds meaningful oversight if the reviewer can examine the evidence, question the output, and change the decision. A rubber-stamp review can preserve rather than correct a system’s errors.
