Check an AI-generated proof as a draft, not as a result established by confident wording. First write down the exact claim and its assumptions; then inspect every inference, independently re-derive the steps that carry the argument, and try examples designed to expose edge cases. If the result matters, seek qualified human review or formalize it in a proof assistant—and be precise about what that checking did and did not establish.

What should I check before reading the proof line by line?

Freeze the statement the proof is supposed to establish. An answer can contain valid mathematics and still fail the task if it proves a different, weaker, or more narrowly scoped claim.

Write out the proposition and its conditions

Copy the original problem, then identify the conclusion, hypotheses, definitions, domain, and quantifiers. For example, distinguish “for every real number” from “for every positive real number,” and distinguish “there exists one” from “for every.” Record any conditions such as nonzero denominators, continuity, differentiability, independence, or finiteness that the argument may need.

Compare the AI’s opening and final statements with the original question. Look for a changed variable domain, an assumption introduced without permission, a hypothesis silently dropped, or a conclusion that does not answer what was asked. Do not let a proof’s notation obscure a shift in meaning.

Check that definitions stay fixed

Make sure each term means the same thing throughout. A proof may switch between a definition and a related but non-equivalent property—for example, treating “bounded” as if it meant “attains a maximum.” If the problem defines a term in a special way, use that definition rather than relying on an unstated convention.

Watch for scope changes hidden in notation

Rewrite nested statements in plain language when they are easy to confuse. “For every x, there exists a y” does not generally mean that one fixed y works for every x. Likewise, proving an implication under an extra assumption does not prove the original implication unless that assumption was part of the question. Check whether an object introduced as arbitrary later becomes a specially chosen object, or whether a variable that was meant to range over one set quietly moves to another.

How do I tell whether an AI proof skipped a step?

Read each sentence as a claim that needs a reason. Expand compressed algebra, make theorem assumptions explicit, and check that an implication really follows from the preceding line.

Audit each transition

For every equality, implication, inequality, or theorem invocation, ask: what makes this step valid here? If the answer is “by algebra,” write out the algebra. If it is “by a theorem,” identify the theorem’s conditions and verify that they hold for the objects in this problem.

  • Algebra: Recalculate signs, exponents, substitutions, and simplifications. Check whether a transformation is reversible; squaring both sides, for instance, can introduce possibilities that the original equation does not allow.
  • Division or cancellation: Confirm that the quantity being divided out is nonzero under the stated assumptions. If it could be zero, consider that case separately rather than discarding it.
  • Inequalities: Check the direction after each operation. Multiplying or dividing by a negative quantity reverses an inequality, and an operation involving an unknown sign may require cases.
  • Limits and functions: Verify the conditions needed for the invoked result, such as continuity, differentiability, convergence, or the relevant domain restrictions.
  • Quantifiers and cases: Ensure every case is covered and that the conclusion has the same scope as the claim. A proof for a selected value or one branch does not establish a universal statement.

Pay special attention to words that hide work: “clearly,” “obviously,” “similarly,” and “it follows.” They may be harmless shorthand, but each should expand into a step you can justify. If you cannot supply the missing reason, mark the transition as unchecked rather than treating fluency as evidence.

Trace dependencies back to the assumptions

For a long argument, make a short dependency map: which earlier result supports each important claim, and which original assumption licenses it? This helps uncover circular reasoning, a lemma that assumes the desired conclusion, or a theorem applied outside its hypotheses. It also gives a human reviewer a focused place to begin.

Look for recurring hidden-error patterns

  • Domain drift: A formula valid for positive numbers is later used for all real numbers, or a function is evaluated at points outside its stated domain.
  • Lost side conditions: A denominator, square root, logarithm, inverse, or limit requires a condition that is never carried forward.
  • Incomplete cases: The proof handles a generic nonzero case but never returns to the zero case, an endpoint, or a repeated-root case.
  • Non-equivalent transformations: An implication is treated as an equivalence, or an operation introduces extraneous solutions without a final check in the original statement.
  • Circular support: A “lemma” quietly presumes the result, or a later conclusion is used to justify an earlier step.
  • Notation collision: The same symbol changes meaning, or a quantity that was fixed is treated as variable. Renaming symbols on paper can expose this.

These patterns are useful prompts, not substitutes for reading the actual argument. A proof can avoid all of them and still contain a different error, so stop at every transition you cannot justify.

Which parts should I re-derive independently?

Spend the most effort on the load-bearing transitions: the lemma, construction, estimate, or case split without which the conclusion would not follow. Rework those parts from the definitions or from a theorem you can independently verify, rather than merely asking another AI to endorse the same prose.

A second AI response can be useful as a source of objections or alternative derivations, but agreement between two generated explanations is not independent mathematical certification. Ask for a specific check—for example, “derive this identity from the definitions” or “which hypothesis permits this theorem?”—and then verify the answer yourself.

When re-deriving, use a different route if possible. If the original proof makes a substitution, check the resulting expression directly; if it invokes a lemma, see whether the lemma’s conclusion follows under the problem’s actual assumptions. Different routes can expose a shared hidden assumption that a line-by-line rereading misses.

Can examples reveal a hidden error?

Yes. Carefully chosen examples can refute a universal claim by producing a counterexample, but successful tests on a finite set do not prove a theorem that covers infinitely many cases.

Choose cases that stress the assumptions

Test small values and boundary cases appropriate to the statement. Useful probes include zero, one, negative values, equal inputs, endpoints, degenerate objects, and values that make a denominator vanish—provided those cases are within the stated domain. Also test cases where a strict inequality might become equality or where a stated condition is just barely satisfied.

For a claim about all integers, try small positive and negative integers and zero if allowed. For a claim about a function on an interval, inspect endpoints and points where the expression changes behavior. For a claim that divides by an expression, test whether that expression can be zero. The relevant examples depend on the proposition; a random sample is less useful than a case chosen to challenge a specific step.

Interpret a passing test correctly

If an allowed example contradicts the conclusion, the universal claim is false as stated, even if the proof looks plausible. If several examples work, all you have established is that those cases survived those tests. A proof still needs an argument covering the full stated domain.

How much checking is enough?

Match the review to the assurance you need. For a routine exercise, freezing the claim, auditing each inference, and re-deriving the key transition may be proportionate. A result that informs a publication, safety decision, financial model, or other consequential action warrants a knowledgeable independent reviewer and, where feasible, a formal check.

There is no single “verified” switch. Decide in advance what evidence you need: a plausible draft, a human-reviewed proof, a proof assistant acceptance, or both human and formal review. The cost of formalization includes translating definitions, choosing libraries, checking dependencies, and learning the system. The cost of human review includes finding someone with the relevant expertise and giving that person a precise record of the argument. Compare those costs with the consequences of an undetected error rather than treating the cheapest check as automatically sufficient.

Do not count a polished explanation, a high confidence score, or repeated agreement from the same AI system as extra independent evidence. They may help prioritize where to look, but they do not replace a check of the proposition and its inferences.

When should I use a proof assistant?

Formal checking is useful when the assurance needed justifies the work of translating the intended mathematics into a formal system. Tools such as Lean, Rocq, and Isabelle can check a formal proof against a formal statement, but the translation and the dependencies still need scrutiny.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What formal acceptance establishes

A proof assistant’s acceptance is evidence that the encoded proposition follows in the system’s logic and environment from the definitions, assumptions, and dependencies used. It does not by itself establish that the encoded proposition is the proposition from the original problem. A mistranslated definition, omitted hypothesis, or weaker theorem can be formally proved while missing the intended question.

Inspect the formal statement before relying on the result: check its quantifiers, domains, assumptions, definitions, and conclusion against the original. Then examine relevant dependencies and the formalization environment. The Leiden Declaration on Artificial Intelligence and Mathematics, dated 2 June 2026 and endorsed by the International Mathematical Union, identifies the translation between computer-encoded and human presentations as a challenge.

Choose formalization proportionately

Formalization can require substantial translation, especially when the original argument uses informal definitions or background assumptions that are not written down. It is most helpful when the result is important enough to warrant that effort and the statement can be represented faithfully. For a routine exercise, careful human checking may be more proportionate; for consequential work, formal checking and expert review can complement each other.

How do human review and formal checking differ?

Human review can assess whether the argument addresses the intended problem and explain how its assumptions support the conclusion. Formal checking tests a formal object against an encoded statement. Neither method removes the need to establish that the statement being checked is the one the problem asks about.

Review method What it can establish What still needs checking
Independent human review A knowledgeable reviewer can examine the reasoning, explain where assumptions enter, and assess whether the conclusion answers the original question. The reviewer must understand the relevant mathematics and inspect the actual argument; a bare endorsement does not show which steps were checked.
Proof assistant Acceptance provides evidence that the encoded proof establishes the encoded proposition within the system’s logic and environment. Confirm that the formal statement matches the intended claim, and inspect assumptions, definitions, and dependencies.
Examples or computational probes A counterexample can disprove a universal claim; passing cases can help locate mistakes. Finite successful tests do not establish a universal theorem.
Another AI response It may suggest a different derivation, objection, or place to investigate. Generated agreement is not independent mathematical certification; verify the reasoning and claims separately.

The House of Commons Library briefing published 19 May 2026 advises that AI should be treated as an assistant, not an authority, and recommends human oversight and careful checking. The Leiden Declaration likewise emphasizes transparency and independent verification. These principles support using AI as a source of candidate reasoning, not as the final arbiter of correctness.

How should I report what was checked?

Describe the verification actually performed, not the level of assurance the answer’s tone might suggest. Keep the claim narrow enough that another reader can tell what remains open.

  • AI suggested: The proof or a portion of it came from an AI system and has not been independently validated.
  • Examples tested: Name the cases examined if they matter, and do not present them as proof of a universal claim.
  • Human-reviewed: Identify the scope of review where relevant; do not imply that every step was checked if only a key lemma was examined.
  • Formally checked: Give the proof assistant and version, and state that the encoded proposition was accepted. Explain separately whether the formal statement was checked against the original claim.

Include relevant tools and dependencies when they affect what another person would need to reproduce or assess the check. A precise account lets readers distinguish a plausible draft, a reviewed argument, and a formally verified encoding.

Keep a reproducible review record

Save the original problem beside the version you reviewed. Preserve definitions, diagrams, prompts that materially shaped the generated proof, intermediate calculations, counterexamples, and reviewer comments. For a formal check, record the system and version, imported libraries, scripts, assumptions, and the exact theorem statement. This record prevents a later reader from confusing a revised proof with the text that was actually checked.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if I find a suspicious step?

Do not discard an entire argument immediately, but do not let a nearby correct calculation conceal a gap. Isolate the first unsupported transition, test whether it can be repaired under the original assumptions, and then reassess the later steps that depended on it.

  1. Quote or rewrite the disputed transition in exact mathematical terms.
  2. List the assumptions and earlier results it relies on.
  3. Try to prove that transition independently, or find an allowed example where it fails.
  4. If it fails, check whether the argument can be split into cases or whether the original claim needs an additional hypothesis.
  5. Ask a knowledgeable reviewer to assess the unresolved point when the result has meaningful consequences.

A gap is not automatically a false theorem: it may be an omitted justification that can be supplied. But until that justification is established, the proof is incomplete. OpenAI’s 20 February 2026 account of First Proof describes a research-level evaluation that included expert feedback and human selection in its process; it is a provider’s account of its own work, and it reinforces why attempted solutions should not be treated as established results without suitable checking.

What is the safest standard for trusting an AI-generated proof?

Trust the argument only to the extent that its claim, assumptions, and reasoning have been checked. The Leiden Declaration warns that automated techniques can produce plausible but unreliable or incorrect arguments that are difficult to distinguish from correct proofs. Treat confidence and polish as presentation, not validation; the decisive question is whether every step follows for the exact proposition under review.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I save when documenting a checked proof?

Keep the original problem statement alongside the version you reviewed, plus any formal statement, scripts, or notes needed to reproduce a formal check. Record the proof assistant and version, imported dependencies, examples tested, and the scope of human review so another reader can compare the intended claim with the object that was actually examined.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I trust a proof if Lean accepts it?

Lean’s acceptance is evidence that the encoded proposition follows in Lean’s logic and environment from the stated definitions, assumptions, and dependencies. It does not prove that the encoding matches the original question. Check the formal statement, quantifiers, domains, definitions, and omitted side conditions separately.

How can I tell whether an AI proof skipped a step?

Stop at every equality, implication, theorem invocation, or phrase such as “clearly” and ask what justifies it. Expand the algebra, state the theorem’s hypotheses, check signs and domains, and mark the transition unresolved if you cannot supply a reason.

Can an AI proof be correct even if its explanation is confusing?

Yes. Poor exposition does not by itself refute a claim, just as polished exposition does not prove it. Separate the question of whether the theorem is true from whether the supplied argument establishes it.

What if I cannot decide whether a theorem’s conditions apply?

Pause at that invocation and identify the exact condition you cannot verify. Consult a trusted mathematics text or a knowledgeable reviewer rather than silently assuming the theorem applies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a correct final answer mean the proof is correct?

No. A result can be right for a reason different from the one given, and a flawed derivation may happen to reach the right conclusion. Assess the inference chain, not only the endpoint.

How many examples do I need to test?

There is no number that proves a universal theorem by testing alone. Choose examples that challenge the assumptions—such as zero, endpoints, negative values, degenerate cases, or possible zero denominators. One valid counterexample refutes a universal claim; passing examples only show that those cases survived.

The Bottom Line

Freeze the exact proposition, audit every transition, independently re-derive the load-bearing steps, and use examples to search for counterexamples. Human review and proof assistants can add assurance, but each checks only what it actually examines—and formal acceptance still depends on a faithful statement of the original mathematics.
