Do not act on an AI-generated money recommendation until you have independently verified it. Treat the response as a research hypothesis: pause any transfer or trade, save the complete conversation, identify the answer’s assumptions and date, open the original regulator or company documents, recalculate the figures, and test the idea against your own goals, debts, taxes, liquidity and risk tolerance. For a large, leveraged, complex or irreversible decision, obtain a second opinion from a registered financial professional.
General-purpose assistants can explain financial terms and help you find questions to investigate, but they can also sound certain while using stale, fabricated or manipulated information. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) says tools such as ChatGPT or Gemini are not regulated as financial advice merely because they produce a recommendation, so the protections attached to regulated advice do not automatically apply.

Freeze the decision until the claim, source, arithmetic, suitability and regulatory status have all been checked. Do not transfer money, place an order, disclose credentials or sign a financial document while the answer remains unverified.
- Save the evidence. Keep the full conversation, your exact prompt, the assistant’s date and time, model or service name if shown, and every cited link or document. A partial screenshot can hide the assumption that changed the recommendation.
- Write the proposed action in one sentence. For example: “Buy this fund today,” “move my emergency savings into this account,” or “use 3x leverage.” This prevents a vague explanation from quietly turning into an instruction.
- Set a pause point. Decide that no money moves until you have completed the checks below. Urgency is a sales tactic, not evidence that the opportunity is sound.
Why can an AI answer be wrong even when it sounds confident?
An assistant predicts plausible text; it does not guarantee that each statement is true, current or appropriate for you. It may hallucinate a filing, misread a chart, merge two products, use an old interest rate, or repeat a false article. FINRA warns that AI output can rely on false or outdated news and even manipulated information. A polished explanation and a precise-looking percentage are not proof.

The FCA’s 2026 research illustrates the risk without eliminating it: among 666 UK respondents aged 18–40 who owned investments or expected to buy within 12 months, 73% knew AI can provide inaccurate information and 86% understood that sources referenced by AI should be checked. Awareness is useful, but each decision still needs its own verification.
Lucy Castledine, the FCA’s Director of Consumer Investments, described an appropriate role: “AI can help you research companies, understand jargon or explore options before you make a decision.” That is different from delegating the decision itself.

How do I separate facts, forecasts and recommendations in an AI response?
Break the answer into claim types before checking it. A historical fact can be verified; a forecast needs a range of scenarios; an opinion exposes a preference; and a recommendation requires personal information and a defensible reason it fits you.
Mark each sentence by function
- Fact: a stated fee, eligibility rule, holding, interest rate, filing date or regulation.
- Calculation: a return, yield, compound-growth estimate, tax amount or break-even point.
- Forecast: an expected price, return, rate change or economic outcome.
- Opinion: a judgment such as “attractive,” “cheap” or “conservative.”
- Recommendation: a proposed buy, sell, hold, transfer, borrowing or allocation decision.
Ask the assistant to list its assumptions, missing data, conflicts of interest, fees, tax treatment, downside cases and the evidence that would disprove its conclusion. If it cannot state what would make the answer wrong, treat the conclusion as untested.
Use a verification prompt, not a persuasion prompt
A useful follow-up asks: “Give the publication date and original issuer for every material claim; distinguish facts from estimates; show the formula and inputs; identify information you do not know; explain the worst plausible outcome; and list the documents I should read.” Do not ask the system to “prove” that a trade is good, because that encourages confirmation rather than examination.

How do I check the source behind an AI claim?
Require a named source and publication or update date for every material statement. Then leave the assistant’s link and find the document through the regulator, exchange, company or fund’s own site. A headline, repost or search snippet is a lead, not the evidence.
Use a primary-source hierarchy
| Claim you are checking | Best first source | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Registration, warning or conduct rule | The relevant financial regulator’s register, notice or rulebook | Jurisdiction, firm name, licence status and date checked |
| Company results, debt or ownership | The issuer’s filing and exchange announcement | Reporting period, filing date and exact figure |
| Fund strategy, holdings or charges | The current prospectus, factsheet and fee schedule | Share class, ongoing charges, transaction costs and document date |
| Account rate or eligibility | The provider’s current terms and tariff | Region, account type, introductory period and withdrawal conditions |
| Market price or trading rule | The relevant exchange or official market data | Timestamp, currency and whether the figure is delayed |
Compare at least two independent authoritative sources when a claim affects price, eligibility, regulation, performance or safety. “Independent” means they do not simply copy the same press release. Record disagreements instead of silently choosing the number that supports the trade.
Check geography and date
Financial rules, taxes, compensation schemes and product availability depend on jurisdiction. A UK warning may not answer a US registration question, and a rate displayed in one country may not be offered in another. Volatile information needs a timestamp; a source that was accurate last year may be useless for today’s price or promotion.
How can I recalculate an AI-generated return or fee?
Obtain the inputs independently and redo the arithmetic in a spreadsheet or calculator. Never accept a result merely because the formula looks sophisticated.
Audit the common calculations
- Total return: include price change, distributions, commissions, spreads and platform charges. Confirm whether the percentage is before or after tax.
- Yield: identify whether the denominator is current price, purchase price, average balance or a promotional amount. Check whether the payment is fixed, variable or conditional.
- Compounding: confirm the compounding frequency and whether deposits occur at the beginning or end of each period. A quoted annual rate and an annual percentage yield are not interchangeable.
- Downside: model a loss, not only the central estimate. For leveraged positions, include interest, margin calls, liquidation rules and the possibility of losing more than the initial cash.
- Tax: apply the rules for your residence, account wrapper, income type and holding period. An apparently higher return can leave less after tax.
For an illustrative check, if an assistant says a hypothetical £10,000 grows by 8% annually for five years, calculate 10000 × (1.08)^5 yourself, then test different fees and tax outcomes. Label the result as an illustration; it is not a forecast of any investment.

Challenge unsupported precision
Outputs such as “92% probability” or “guaranteed 14% return” require a defined dataset, method, time period and uncertainty range. Without those details, precision is cosmetic. A forecast should show several scenarios and explain which assumptions drive the difference.
Does the recommendation fit my financial situation?
A sound product can still be unsuitable for a particular person. Use the investor-profile factors identified by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as a structured suitability check before considering any action.
| Area | Questions to answer | Why it can change the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Financial situation and needs | What income, assets, regular expenses and emergency reserves do I have? | A loss may threaten rent, bills or essential care. |
| Investments, assets and debts | What do I already own, and what are the interest rates and repayment terms on my debts? | Repaying expensive debt can dominate a speculative return. |
| Age and time horizon | When will I need the money, and how much time is available to recover from a fall? | A long horizon does not protect money needed next month. |
| Liquidity | Can I withdraw or sell promptly, and what penalties, gates or spreads apply? | An asset can be valuable yet unusable when cash is needed. |
| Risk tolerance and capacity | How would I react to a 20%, 40% or total loss, and could I financially absorb it? | Emotional comfort and ability to bear loss are different tests. |
| Experience and sophistication | Do I understand the product, leverage, derivatives, custody and tax treatment? | Complexity increases the chance of an avoidable error. |
| Objectives and strategy | Is the goal growth, income, preservation, a purchase or debt reduction? | The same asset may suit one objective and undermine another. |
| Monitoring need | How often must the position be reviewed, and who will act if conditions change? | A strategy requiring constant oversight may be unsuitable if you cannot monitor it. |
Include marital status and tax status where they affect ownership, filing or liability. Also ask what information the assistant never received. If it did not know your debts, emergency fund, tax residence or time horizon, it could not have made a genuinely personal assessment.
Is an AI assistant’s financial advice regulated?
Usually, a general-purpose chatbot is not transformed into a regulated adviser simply by answering a finance question. The FCA says such tools can hallucinate or use outdated information and should guide deeper research rather than provide the final answer. Regulatory protection depends on the provider, service, product and jurisdiction.

What protections should you verify?
- Whether the firm and individual appear on the applicable regulator’s register.
- Whether the service owes suitability, disclosure, best-execution or complaint-handling duties.
- Whether an investor-compensation or deposit-protection scheme applies, and to which products and limits.
- Where client money and assets are held, and what happens if the provider fails.
- Whether the service has a conflict, referral payment, spread, subscription or incentive linked to your action.
Do not assume that a chatbot’s disclaimer, a familiar logo or a link supplied in a message creates regulatory coverage. Verify the firm through a known regulator or provider channel rather than the contact details in the pitch.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I spot an AI-assisted investment scam?
Fraudsters can use generated voices, polished websites and automated “trading bots” to make an offer appear institutional. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) recommends independent background research, domain-age checks, a second opinion and a review of risks and costs.
Red flags that should stop the process
- “Guaranteed,” “risk-free,” “secret” or “get rich quick” claims.
- Pressure to act immediately, keep the opportunity private or move the conversation to an untraceable channel.
- Requests for passwords, one-time codes, remote access or an upfront payment before withdrawals.
- Returns that are unusually smooth, screenshots instead of audited records, or testimonials replacing documents.
- Unclear ownership, a newly created domain, mismatched company names or registration details that cannot be independently confirmed.
- Fees, spreads, lockups, withdrawal rules or the underlying asset are not explained in writing.
Search for the firm and promoter independently, inspect the domain’s history, verify an unexpected message through a known telephone number, and check the regulator’s warning list. A registered firm can still offer a poor investment, but an unverified identity is a reason to stop before discussing returns.
When should I get a human second opinion?
Escalate when the amount is material to your finances, the product is leveraged or complex, the decision cannot easily be reversed, or the answer conflicts with an authoritative document. Also pause if the assistant cannot provide primary sources, leaves key assumptions blank or creates emotional pressure.
Choose a professional whose registration and permissions you can verify in your jurisdiction. Give that person the original AI conversation, your assumptions and the documents you found; do not present only the conclusion you hope to hear. For a tax-sensitive or legal issue, the appropriate specialist may be a tax professional or lawyer rather than an investment adviser.
Best Value
How should I compare an AI suggestion with a human adviser or another source?
Use the same decision axes for every option instead of comparing confidence or writing style.
| Axis | General-purpose AI | Regulated human adviser | Primary document |
|---|---|---|---|
| Authority and recency | May combine current and stale material; verify every claim. | Depends on the adviser’s research and duties; ask for dates and sources. | States the issuer or regulator’s position for a defined date and scope. |
| Calculations | Can explain formulas but may invent inputs or arithmetic. | Can model your data; request assumptions and check the work. | Usually reports official figures, not a personal projection. |
| Personal fit | Only as good as the profile you provide; often incomplete. | Can gather facts and assess suitability where required. | Does not know your objectives or constraints. |
| Costs and downside | May omit spreads, taxes, financing or opportunity cost. | Should disclose relevant charges and risks; verify incentives. | Lists product terms, not the total cost for your situation. |
| Oversight and protection | No automatic compensation or suitability framework. | May carry licensing, conduct and complaint obligations. | Authoritative for its subject, but not a personal service. |
| Conflicts and privacy | Service incentives and data use require checking. | Ask how the adviser is paid and how your data is handled. | Check issuer incentives and read the document’s conflict disclosures. |
Two AI systems repeating the same headline are not necessarily independent confirmation: they may draw on the same underlying article or data error. Independence comes from different authoritative records, methods or accountable professionals.
What is a practical pre-action checklist?
Before placing an order or sending money, confirm each item in writing:
- I saved the complete AI answer, prompt, date and cited material.
- I can label every important statement as fact, calculation, forecast, opinion or recommendation.
- Each material fact has a named, dated primary source that I opened myself.
- I checked the relevant country, currency, product version and time period.
- I independently recalculated return, yield, fees, tax and downside scenarios.
- I considered income, assets, debts, emergency cash, liquidity, age, horizon, risk tolerance, experience, objectives and monitoring needs.
- I know the provider’s legal status, registration, custody arrangement, complaint route and applicable protection scheme.
- I found no guarantee, urgency, secrecy, identity mismatch or unexplained withdrawal restriction.
- I obtained a second opinion where the decision is large, leveraged, complex, irreversible or emotionally pressured.
Keep the checklist, documents and final reasoning together. If the answer later proves wrong, the record shows which assumption failed and helps you correct the decision rather than relying on memory.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can two AI assistants count as independent confirmation?
Not by themselves. Different assistants may repeat the same stale article, database error or manipulated claim, so confirmation should come from an original filing, regulator record, exchange notice or accountable professional using independently obtained information.
How old can a financial source be before I reject it?
There is no universal safe age. Use the newest available document for prices, rates, eligibility, tax rules and promotions; for slower-changing concepts, confirm that the document still applies to your jurisdiction and product version.

Stop the transaction and identify their scope and dates. A later corrected filing, legally controlling term or regulator notice may resolve the conflict; otherwise contact the issuer or regulator through a verified channel and keep both documents with your decision record.
Is a stock screener or chatbot summary automatically financial advice?
A factual screen or explanation is different from a communication objectively likely to influence a buy-or-sell decision. The legal classification depends on what was said, how personalised it was, who provided it and the rules in your jurisdiction, so do not infer protection from the format alone.
