Do not treat an AI answer as an authority. Treat it as a set of claims that must earn your trust one by one. Break the response into factual statements, open and inspect the original sources, check dates, geography, definitions and numbers, compare independent evidence, and get qualified human review when an error could affect health, rights, money or safety. A fluent tone, a citation, a provenance badge or an AI-detector score can provide clues, but none proves that the answer is true.
How can I tell whether an AI answer is telling the truth?
Verify the answer claim by claim rather than judging its writing style. Identify every material assertion, find the best available primary or authoritative source, and confirm that the source supports the exact wording in the relevant time and place. If you cannot confirm a consequential claim, label it unverified and do not rely on it.

OpenAI’s Help Center puts the central warning plainly: “ChatGPT can be helpful—but it’s not always right.” The House of Commons Library makes the operational rule even clearer: “AI should be treated as an assistant, not an authority.” A confident paragraph can contain a correct fact, a stale number, a fabricated quotation and an unsupported conclusion side by side.
- Fluency is not evidence. Models are optimized to produce plausible language, not to guarantee factual accuracy.
- Verification is granular. One citation rarely validates every sentence, number or inference in a paragraph.
- Scope controls meaning. A statistic may apply only to one country, population, definition, unit or model version.
- High-impact uses need a higher bar. Medical, legal, financial, employment, safety and rights-related decisions warrant current primary evidence and qualified review.
Why can an AI answer sound certain while being wrong?
Generative systems predict likely text from patterns in their training and context. They can produce a plausible name, date, citation or explanation even when they do not have reliable evidence for it. The result is often called a hallucination, but the practical issue is simpler: a statement that has not been checked is still an unverified statement, however polished it sounds.

Confidence can hide several different failures
- A source may be invented, inaccessible or unrelated to the sentence that cites it.
- A real source may be misread, quoted out of context or applied to a different jurisdiction.
- A once-correct fact may be obsolete after a law, product, policy or scientific finding changed.
- A model may merge two people, studies, agencies or versions into one seemingly coherent claim.
- A recommendation may omit a cost, contraindication, exception or competing explanation.
Do not search for a universal “AI accuracy percentage.” Authoritative guidance does not identify one figure that applies across models, prompts, subjects and dates. Accuracy must be established for the particular claim and the evidence behind it.
What is a reliable workflow for fact-checking an AI answer?
Use the following sequence whenever the answer will be shared, published or used to make a decision. It is deliberately slower than accepting a fluent response, because it exposes exactly where evidence is missing.

Before checking details, write down what the answer will help you decide and what a mistake would cost. A low-stakes brainstorming suggestion can tolerate uncertainty; advice about a prescription, contract, tax filing, investment, workplace action or physical hazard cannot.
- Record the intended action and deadline.
- Set an evidence threshold before you become attached to the answer.
- For high-impact decisions, plan to involve a licensed or otherwise qualified professional.
Government guidance in Canada says not to consider generated content authoritative and to assess the impact of inaccurate outputs. That is a useful default: increase scrutiny as the consequence of error rises.
2. Turn the prose into individual claims
Copy the response into a checklist. Mark every date, number, quotation, named person or organization, causal statement, recommendation and absolute word such as “always,” “never” or “guaranteed.” Separate an observable fact from the model’s interpretation and from speculation about what might happen.
For example, a sentence saying that a policy “banned a practice nationwide in 2024 and reduced incidents by 30%” contains at least three checks: whether the ban exists, whether it covers the whole country and year, and whether the 30% figure uses the right definition and denominator.

3. Investigate the source, not the citation label
Open every reference instead of trusting a footnote, hyperlink title or bracketed citation. Confirm that the document exists, identify its author or publishing organization, note its publication and update dates, and search within it for the exact passage or data table that supports the claim.

Boston University’s guidance summarizes this discipline as “Stop, Investigate the Source, and Find Better Coverage.” A citation that is genuine but does not support the sentence is a failed verification. If the link leads to a different article, a search-result page or no document at all, record the claim as unsupported until better evidence is found.
4. Prefer primary and authoritative evidence
Use secondary reporting to locate evidence, then confirm the material point in the original record. The strongest source depends on the claim:
| Claim type | Preferred evidence | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Statistic or trend | The agency, dataset or study that produced it | Method, sample, denominator, release date and revisions |
| Law, regulation or official requirement | Current legislation, regulator or government policy | Jurisdiction, effective date, definitions, exemptions and enforcement |
| Scientific or medical finding | Original peer-reviewed paper or recognized evidence review | Methods, population, limitations, conflicts and whether later evidence changes it |
| Public-sector practice | Government department or recognized institutional briefing | Issuing body, scope, update status and any implementation conditions |
| Breaking event | On-the-record statements and multiple reputable reports | What is confirmed, what is alleged and when each account was published |
The House of Commons Library lists official statistics, primary legislation, government departments, recognized regulators, peer-reviewed research and its own briefings as examples of reputable evidence. Expertise still matters: a source can be authoritative in one field and irrelevant in another.

Write down the source’s publication or update date and compare it with the date of the AI answer and your decision. Then check:
- Jurisdiction: country, state, province, court or institution.
- Population: who was included or excluded, and whether the result applies to your group.
- Definitions: what counts as an incident, diagnosis, user, “success” or “compliance.”
- Units and denominators: percentages versus percentage points, monthly versus annual totals, rates versus raw counts.
- Version: software release, model edition, policy revision or dataset vintage.
New Zealand Digital Government guidance advises checking that references are legitimate and cross-referencing outputs with credible sources before publication. A source can be reputable and still be the wrong source for your question if its scope does not match.
6. Confirm independently when the stakes or dispute warrant it
For an important or contested claim, seek a second independent source rather than two pages that repeat the same press release. Independence matters: copied wording is not corroboration. If sources disagree, preserve both versions, identify why they differ and ask a subject-matter expert to assess the methods or legal interpretation.
Independent confirmation is especially important for political claims, fast-changing events and anything that could affect someone’s health, rights, money or safety. A professional reviewer can also tell you when a technically accurate statement is misleading in practice.

7. Record uncertainty and stop when evidence is insufficient
You can ask the model to show uncertainty, list assumptions or say “I don’t know,” but its self-reported confidence is not proof. Treat those prompts as ways to expose claims for checking, not as a substitute for checking.
If you cannot find the original source, the source does not support the wording, or credible evidence remains in conflict, mark the claim unverified. Do not publish it as fact or use it for a consequential decision. Canadian guidance says that when content quality cannot be confirmed, it should not be used; the same rule is a safe stopping point for any domain.
How do I verify citations in a ChatGPT or other AI response?
Follow the citation to the underlying document and test the sentence against the document, not against the citation format. The check has four parts:
- Existence: Does the cited page, paper, law or dataset actually exist?
- Identity: Is the author or issuing body credible for this subject, and is the document the cited edition?
- Entailment: Does the source explicitly support the claim, including its number, date, causation and strength of language?
- Applicability: Does the source cover the same population, geography, period and definitions as the answer?
Search the source for the quoted phrase, table or section. Read the surrounding paragraphs, footnotes and methods; a model may select a real sentence while omitting a limitation that reverses its practical meaning. If a citation is inaccessible, do not infer that it is correct. Find an accessible primary record or downgrade the claim.
What should I do when two AI answers disagree?
Do not choose the answer with the more confident tone or longer explanation. Compare the competing claims on evidence quality, currency, completeness and the cost of being wrong.
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Source quality | Does each answer cite a primary or authoritative source, and does that source directly support the statement? |
| Currency and jurisdiction | Which answer uses the current rule or data for the relevant country, population and version? |
| Completeness | What assumptions, exceptions, counterevidence or uncertainty did each answer omit? |
| Consequences | What happens if the answer is wrong, and does that require professional review before acting? |
If both answers rely on the same unverified citation, you have one unsupported claim, not two confirmations. If credible sources conflict, explain the disagreement and the reason for your provisional conclusion instead of forcing a single definitive answer.
Can provenance badges, watermarks or AI detectors prove an answer is true?
No. Origin signals address how a file may have been created or edited; they do not establish whether its claims are accurate, legally owned or presented in context.

| Tool or signal | What it may indicate | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Provenance manifest or content credentials | Recorded origin or editing history for supported files | Truth, complete authorship, legal ownership or correct context |
| Watermark detection such as SynthID for supported media | That a detectable signal is associated with certain generated media | That the caption, claim or surrounding context is accurate |
| AI-writing detector | A probabilistic style signal | Whether text is human- or AI-written with certainty, or whether it is factually correct |
| Missing provenance signal | Nothing definitive; metadata may be absent | That a file is human-made or trustworthy |
OpenAI states that provenance signals can provide useful information about origin but do not guarantee accuracy, unedited status, legal ownership or correct context. Its supported checks cover signals associated with some generated or exported images and audio; a signal can disappear through unsupported formats, metadata stripping, editing, compression or the age of the content.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGoogle describes SynthID detection for supported AI-generated media and source-context features such as Gemini source lists and About this image. Those features can help investigate origin and context, but a detected watermark is not evidence that an accompanying claim is true. University guidance likewise warns that generic detectors are unreliable: human writing can be flagged and AI writing can evade detection. Evaluate the claims and evidence themselves.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should I get a human expert to review an AI answer?
Get qualified review before acting whenever the answer could materially change a person’s health, legal position, finances, employment, safety or rights, or when you cannot judge the evidence quality yourself. Give the reviewer the original AI response, every cited source, your intended decision and the uncertainties you recorded.
Medical and safety decisions
Use current clinical or official safety guidance and a licensed professional who can account for symptoms, history, environment and contraindications. An AI summary may help you prepare questions, but it cannot examine you, inspect a hazard or assume responsibility for treatment.
Legal, financial and employment decisions
Check the current rule for the relevant jurisdiction and date, then ask an appropriately qualified adviser to interpret how it applies to your facts. A general explanation can omit exceptions, filing deadlines, contractual language or local practice that changes the outcome.

Publishing and public communication
Manually fact-check every material statement before publication. Google Search Central says it is critical to manually fact-check and review AI-generated content for accuracy and trustworthiness before publishing. Preserve links, access dates and notes showing which claims were confirmed and which were removed or qualified.
What is a practical checklist before I rely on an AI answer?
Use this compact checklist after completing the deeper checks above:
Best Value
- What decision will this answer support, and what is the cost of an error?
- Have I separated facts, interpretations, recommendations and speculation?
- Did I verify every important number, quote, date, named entity and absolute claim?
- Did I open each citation and confirm that it supports the exact wording?
- Are the source’s date, jurisdiction, population, definitions, units and version appropriate?
- Did I consult an independent source for a consequential or contested point?
- Have I recorded uncertainty, conflicts and missing evidence?
- If evidence is insufficient, have I stopped rather than filled the gap with the model’s confidence?
- Does a qualified person need to review this before anyone acts?
Passing a detector or finding a provenance record does not replace any item on this list. The decision should rest on evidence that survives direct inspection, not on the appearance or origin of the text.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I ask an AI to fact-check its own answer?
You can ask it to list assumptions, provide sources, identify uncertainty and separate facts from guesses. Use that output as a checklist for your own investigation; a model cannot independently guarantee that its revised answer or citations are correct.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →How many sources are enough to verify an AI claim?
There is no universal number. One authoritative primary source may establish a straightforward rule, while a disputed or high-impact claim may require multiple independent sources and expert review. Source relevance and independence matter more than counting links.
What should I do with a claim that is probably true but has no source?
Treat it as unverified, even if it matches your prior knowledge. Either locate a credible original record, rewrite it as a clearly labeled possibility, or remove it; do not present confidence as evidence.
Does asking the model to browse make the answer reliable?
Browsing can expose current documents, but it does not ensure that the model selected the right source, interpreted it correctly or covered every claim. Open the documents yourself and check scope, date and wording before relying on the result.
How should I preserve my verification work?
Keep the original prompt and answer, a claim-by-claim checklist, copies or stable references to the sources, access dates, and notes about disagreements or edits. This record lets another reviewer reproduce your checks and see what remains uncertain.
