If you cannot inspect it in person, use the same checks during the seller’s return window. A clean result is useful evidence, not a guarantee that every fault has been ruled out.
1. Confirm the exact model
Ask for the MacBook’s model name and year or generation, then confirm that the information matches the machine you are inspecting. Battery cycle limits differ by model, so the exact identification matters before you interpret the cycle count. Also check that the configuration suits your needs: for example, the listed memory and storage should match what the Mac reports. Treat those as facts to verify on the device rather than relying only on the listing.
2. Check battery health and cycle count
Read Battery Health
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Battery.
- Read the Battery Health status. Apple describes Normal as the battery functioning normally. Service recommended means it holds less charge than when new; the Mac may still be usable, but factor possible service into your decision and budget.

Find the cycle count
- Hold the Option key while opening the Apple menu, then choose System Information.
- In the sidebar, select Hardware > Power.
- Look under Battery Information for the cycle count and compare it with the maximum listed for that exact model on Apple’s cycle-count page.
Do not treat 1,000 cycles as a universal limit: Apple lists that maximum for many, but not necessarily all, MacBook models. Apple says a battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original charge capacity at its maximum cycle count. That is a design statement, not a prediction of a particular used Mac’s runtime.
3. Make sure Activation Lock is cleared
Before money changes hands, have the seller turn off Find My and remove the Mac from their Apple Account. Apple says an Apple Account password or device passcode may be required to turn off Find My, erase, reactivate, and use a Mac protected by Activation Lock. A reset alone is not a substitute for the previous owner removing the device. If the seller cannot or will not clear the lock, do not proceed on the assumption that you can make the Mac usable later.

Apple Diagnostics can help identify which hardware component might be at fault and may provide reference codes. It is a useful screening check, not proof that the Mac has no hardware problems. Follow Apple’s Apple Diagnostics instructions; the startup method depends on the processor:

- Apple silicon: Shut down the Mac, press and hold the power button until startup options appear, then press Command-D.
- Intel: Start the Mac and immediately hold D. If that does not work, try Option-D.
If Diagnostics reports a reference code, note it and ask the seller what it means and whether the issue was repaired. Do not dismiss an unexplained result simply because the computer starts up.
5. Check repair history on supported Macs
On an Apple silicon Mac running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, open System Settings > General > About and look for Parts & Service. Apple says the section appears only when the Mac detects a repair. Availability and the components covered depend on the model; if a part was serviced more than once, only the most recent service appears. If Parts & Service is absent, that does not establish that the Mac has never been repaired: the feature has hardware and software requirements and appears only under the conditions Apple describes.
6. Inspect the rest of the device and the deal
Use the inspection to check the screen, keyboard, trackpad, ports, case, and charger in person. These are practical hands-on checks, not a substitute for the software checks above. Ask the seller to demonstrate that the Mac powers on and that the features you need work.

Before paying, read the seller’s written return and warranty terms, and compare the asking price with any likely service costs. Apple’s technical guidance can help assess the Mac; it does not certify a seller, listing, warranty, or unit.
7. Treat remote-management status as a separate unresolved check
The checks above do not establish that a Mac is free of organizational device management or remote-management enrollment. If the seller cannot clearly resolve that concern, do not treat a battery check, diagnostic run, or successful reset as proof that the Mac is clear. Ask the seller or organization to clarify its status before purchase.
