1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsShort answer: A connected car can make remote access, navigation, entertainment, and emergency features possible, but those services may also involve collecting and sharing location, driving, app, or other personal data. An older car may have fewer built-in connected features, but its age alone does not prove it stores or transmits no personal information. Compare the exact vehicle, model year, market, services, privacy notice, settings, and reset process before buying.
What makes a car connected—and what might you gain?
“Connected” can describe several different capabilities, not one standard package. A vehicle may have an embedded modem and telematics service, a phone app, Wi-Fi, location-based functions, a voice assistant, or an emergency-assistance feature. Some functions depend on an account or subscription; others may be available through the infotainment system or a paired phone.

The convenience is real: the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) cites internet radio and app-based unlocking as examples of connected-car services. Automaker services may also support remote vehicle functions, navigation, location services, or emergency assistance. Which features are present depends on the specific vehicle and service.
Older cars can still store information in an infotainment unit, driver profile, or paired phone connection. A used vehicle may also have an embedded modem or an account left behind by its previous owner. The practical comparison is therefore not simply “new versus old”; it is what each car can access, what its services collect, and what remains on the vehicle or in an account.

What data could be involved?
There is no universal inventory for every connected car. The FTC identifies location and biometric data as examples of potentially sensitive information. Ford’s U.S. privacy notice, as one manufacturer-specific example, describes vehicle and driving data, location, app data, and information associated with infotainment and connected services. These examples do not establish that every car collects every listed category.
Distinguish what a vehicle could technically access from what a particular service says it collects. A vehicle’s notice, the connected app’s permissions, and a separate service provider’s terms may each describe different data and uses. Review them together rather than treating a single privacy menu as a complete picture.

Use the following questions for each candidate car. Ask for information tied to the exact make, model, model year, trim, and market; equipment and controls can differ within the same model line.

|---|---|
| Connectivity | Does it have an embedded modem, telematics service, connected app, Wi-Fi, location services, voice assistant, or emergency feature? Is a service account active, and is enrollment optional? |
| Data collected | What does the applicable notice say may be collected—vehicle, driving, location, app, device, voice, or biometric data? Which data can the car access, and which does the service say it actually collects? |
| Purpose and recipients | Is data used to provide a requested feature, improve products, perform analytics, support marketing, enable insurance-related functions, or shared with service providers or other third parties? Do app or provider terms add separate uses? |
| Choice and control | Can you decline enrollment, turn off precise location or specific analytics, withdraw consent, opt out of sharing, or request access or deletion? Which features stop working when a setting is disabled? |
| Storage and security | What may remain in the head unit, driver profile, app account, or cloud service? How does the manufacturer direct owners to remove it when the car changes hands? |
| Accountability and recourse | Who handles the data and privacy requests? Where do you send a request, and what rights apply where you live? |
The U.S. Government Accountability Office’s 2017 review offers a useful way to organize those questions: transparency, focused data use, security, data accuracy and access, individual control, and accountability. GAO cautioned that its selected review was not a compliance assessment and that its interview results could not be generalized to the whole industry. Treat the framework as a checklist, not a rating of current cars.

Why notice and consent matter: the GM and OnStar case
In January 2026, the FTC finalized an order resolving allegations that General Motors and OnStar collected, used, and sold precise geolocation and driving-behavior data without adequate notice and affirmative consent. The allegations are not a finding about every automaker. The final order restricts specified disclosures to consumer reporting agencies for five years.
The broader order lasts 20 years. As described by the FTC, it requires GM to obtain affirmative express consent for covered collection, use, or sharing, subject to stated exceptions; provide U.S. consumers a way to request copies and seek deletion of data; enable disabling precise geolocation where vehicle technology supports it; and offer opt-outs for geolocation and driving-behavior collection, subject to exceptions. These requirements apply to GM under this order, not to all carmakers.
How to check before buying
- Get the exact vehicle details. Ask for the make, model, model year, trim, market, and VIN. Request the privacy notice that applies to that vehicle and its connected services.
- Inventory the connected features. Check for an embedded modem, connected-service account, app, Wi-Fi, location functions, voice services, and emergency assistance. Confirm whether enrollment is optional and whether any account is already active.
- Read the relevant notices. Identify data categories, purposes, recipients, retention information, consent choices, and privacy-request routes. Check separate terms for apps and service providers.
- Review the actual controls. While the vehicle is parked, inspect settings for data sharing, location, app permissions, driver profiles, voice services, and analytics. Ask which features you would lose by disabling a setting.
- Check the ownership-transfer procedure. Find the model-specific instructions for removing accounts, paired phones, stored profiles, and connectivity data. Confirm whether a factory or connectivity reset is recommended.
Ford’s live U.S. notice illustrates why this needs to be vehicle-specific: it says settings depend on equipment and infotainment version, and points owners to the manual, vehicle settings, or a dealer for details. Its guidance is specific to Ford vehicles and is not a universal description of other manufacturers’ menus.

Buying a used car: clear accounts and stored data
Treat the head unit and connected accounts as potential personal-data storage. Before taking ownership, ask the seller to remove the vehicle from their account, unpair phones, clear profiles and address books, and complete the manufacturer’s model-specific factory or connectivity reset. Verify the steps in the owner’s manual; available controls vary by vehicle.

Ford advises a factory or connectivity reset when no longer using a vehicle and before selling or after buying a used modem-equipped vehicle. That is Ford’s guidance for its vehicles, not proof that every manufacturer uses the same reset procedure. Check settings again after a software update, account transfer, or profile change.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The FTC’s May 2024 overview explains that connected-car data can include sensitive information and that collection, use, and disclosure can affect privacy and financial welfare, while also recognizing the utility of connected services. Ford’s U.S. notice provides a concrete example of one manufacturer’s data practices and vehicle-dependent controls. Neither establishes one data policy or menu for the entire automotive market.
GAO-17-656 dates to 2017 and is useful here for its six-practice framework, not as a current model-by-model assessment. The sources cited do not establish a representative share of cars that collect or share particular data, so a general prevalence claim would go beyond what they show.
