No single serial-number lookup or diagnostic result proves that a Mac is problem-free.
1. Verify the exact Mac and advertised configuration
On the Mac, open the Apple menu > About This Mac. For more detail, hold Option while opening the Apple menu and choose System Information. Check the model name and identifier, chip or processor, memory, storage, and serial number where available. Compare those details with the listing and Apple’s Mac model identification information.

Use the information from the running Mac rather than relying only on a case label or packaging. Apple notes that a logic-board replacement can cause the serial number shown on the Mac to differ from the number printed on the case or box. If the numbers do not match, ask the seller for repair documentation and an explanation before buying.
2. Check battery condition and cycle count
In System Information, select Hardware > Power. Review the cycle count and battery condition. Apple’s battery cycle-count guidance explains that cycle limits vary by Mac model; there is no single cycle-count cutoff that applies to every MacBook. Look up the limit for the specific model rather than treating a general number as a pass-or-fail rule.

Apple says a Mac battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original charge capacity at its maximum cycle count. That is a design benchmark, not a prediction of this Mac’s runtime. Consider the cycle count alongside the reported condition, the age and model of the Mac, and how the battery performs during practical use. A cycle count alone cannot tell you how long the machine will run on a charge.
3. Run Apple Diagnostics if the seller allows
Apple Diagnostics can help identify the potential source of a hardware issue, but a pass is not proof that every component works perfectly or that an intermittent fault cannot occur. Apple provides separate startup instructions for each processor type in its Apple Diagnostics guide.

Apple silicon
- Shut down the Mac.
- Press and hold the power button until startup options appear.
- Hold Command-D to start Apple Diagnostics.
Intel
- Start the Mac and immediately hold the D key.
- If that does not work, try Option-D as an alternate startup method.
Ask the seller to show you the result. If Diagnostics reports an issue, note the result and decide whether to walk away or obtain a qualified repair assessment before agreeing to a price.
4. Check coverage, but do not treat it as a condition report
Enter the Mac’s serial number in Apple’s Check Coverage service to view coverage and benefits associated with that serial number. Results are tied to the serial and the time of lookup. They do not establish who owns the Mac, provide a complete repair history, confirm the absence of management controls or Activation Lock, or verify physical condition.

5. Make sure the Mac is ready to transfer
Activation Lock can prevent a new owner from erasing or reactivating a Mac without the associated Apple Account credentials. Apple’s Activation Lock information explains why the seller must remove the Mac from their account before transfer.
- Ask the seller to turn off Find My and remove the Mac from their Apple Account.
- Have the seller erase the Mac.
- Where possible, proceed through setup far enough to check that it does not ask for the previous owner’s Apple Account.
If the seller cannot clear Activation Lock, do not treat the Mac as ready for transfer or pay on the assumption that you can resolve it later.

6. Inspect parts software cannot verify
Test the Mac in person, rather than relying only on screenshots or the seller’s description. Check:

- Screen for damage, marks, or visible display problems.
- Keyboard and trackpad, including the keys and gestures you use regularly.
- Speakers and camera.
- Ports and charging.
- Hinges and visible case condition.
Note any damage or missing accessories and compare them with the listing. Apple does not define a standardized cosmetic grading procedure in the guidance cited here, so assess the specific machine and make sure any promised return or warranty terms are clear before purchase.

7. Compare listings on the same evidence
For each Mac you are considering, record the exact model and configuration, battery condition and cycle count in the context of that model, diagnostic results, physical and functional condition, Activation Lock and setup status, remaining coverage, included charger or accessories, seller reputation, and return or warranty terms. Comparing those details is more useful than comparing listings by model family or asking price alone.

Availability and terms should be checked for your region; it is an alternative buying route, not proof that any particular listing is the best value.
