You can stream to YouTube from an Ubuntu EC2 instance by running an encoder on the virtual server, then sending its output to the RTMPS address and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Choose an India AWS region based on current availability, latency and price; secure SSH access, match encoder settings to your workload, test the stream, and stop billable resources when finished. There is no universally correct EC2 instance size for every resolution, codec and encoding workload.
What you need before setting up EC2
- An AWS account and an available EC2 instance in your chosen India region.
- An official Ubuntu Server AMI published by Canonical, with the architecture and Ubuntu release you intend to use. Canonical documents its AWS images at Canonical’s Ubuntu on AWS page.
- An SSH key pair and a security group that permits SSH only from your own public IP range where practical.
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days; see YouTube’s live streaming eligibility guidance.
- Encoder software configured for a protocol and codec YouTube supports, plus enough compute and network capacity for the chosen output.
EC2 hosts the encoder; it does not supply the video program. You still need a recording or other source for the encoder to send. This guide describes the configuration path, not a verified end-to-end deployment or a specific tested FFmpeg command.

Choose an India region and EC2 capacity
In the AWS console, select the India region you want to use before launching the instance. Region choice affects network path and latency, available instance types and pricing. Check current regional availability and pricing for your intended runtime rather than assuming a particular type or rupee cost is available. AWS network bandwidth varies by instance type, and CPU encoding load varies with codec, resolution, frame rate and encoder settings.

How to decide what EC2 instance you need for 1080p
There is no single instance size established as right for all 1080p streams. A software encoder running on a general-purpose CPU may need more compute as frame rate, codec complexity or encoding quality requirements rise. A GPU-capable instance or external encoder may suit a different workload, but compare its current availability and cost rather than assuming it is automatically better.

Estimate the required output bitrate from YouTube’s guidance, then verify that the selected instance can encode the actual source and sustain the bitrate with headroom. If the stream is important, test the actual resolution, frame rate, codec, audio and representative motion before the event.
Launch Ubuntu securely
- In the EC2 console, set the intended India region and choose a current official Ubuntu Server AMI from Canonical’s AWS account. Confirm the image architecture matches the instance type.
- Create or select a key pair. Save the private key securely; the SSH client must use the matching private key for this instance.
- Create or select a security group. Allow inbound SSH (TCP port 22) only from the operator’s known IP range where practical. YouTube contribution is outbound from the encoder, so a public inbound RTMP rule is not required for sending a stream to YouTube.
- Ensure the instance has a route and outbound connectivity for Ubuntu package repositories and YouTube’s ingest service.
- Launch the instance, then connect with SSH using the Ubuntu account name,
ubuntu, and the matching key. Follow the connection details shown for your instance and client. - Update Ubuntu and install and configure the encoder you chose. Consult that encoder’s own instructions for its current installation steps and command syntax.
AWS security groups govern inbound and outbound traffic. AWS warns that allowing every IP address to reach SSH is unsafe for production; the exception it describes is a brief test instance that will be stopped or terminated. See AWS security group rule guidance.

Get the correct YouTube ingest address and key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room, confirm the channel can stream, and create or select the live event.
- Copy the RTMPS URL and stream key displayed for that stream. Do not copy an address or key from a generic tutorial: use the values shown for the actual event.
- Enter those details in the encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Treat the stream key like a password; do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, logs or shared configuration. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube and update the encoder.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, describing it as “a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Its instructions are at Encrypt your stream using RTMPS. If the encoder reports an SSL certificate issue, verify the exact RTMPS address from Live Control Room and, if needed, try specifying port 443 as YouTube advises.

| H.264 output | YouTube recommended bitrate | Key settings |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | CBR; two-second keyframe interval |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | CBR; two-second keyframe interval |
The bitrate figures are YouTube’s published recommendations accessed in 2026, not a promise that a particular EC2 instance will encode or deliver them reliably. Select resolution and frame rate to fit both your source and instance. YouTube recommends roughly 20% network bandwidth headroom; its streaming tips also recommend setting up in advance and testing with realistic audio and video motion. For example, a 10 Mbps video bitrate needs more than 10 Mbps of stable outbound capacity once audio and headroom are considered.
Test before going live to viewers
- Where appropriate, create a private or unlisted test event and start the encoder well before the scheduled broadcast.
- Check that YouTube Live Control Room receives the signal and inspect its preview and stream health indicators.
- Play representative footage with the real audio configuration and motion. Watch for dropped frames, buffering, audio problems or encoder overload.
- If the test is unstable, lower the output demand or choose an instance with more suitable compute or network capacity, then repeat the test. Do not rely on a paper bandwidth estimate alone.
Estimate AWS costs and shut down cleanly
EC2 cost depends on instance type, region and time running. Other possible charges include storage, public IPv4 and data transfer. AWS states that customers receive 100 GB of internet data transfer out free each month, aggregated across AWS services and Regions except China and GovCloud; it is not a stream-specific estimate or a complete free-use allowance. Review current EC2 pricing and the applicable regional rates for the expected runtime and data volume before launching.

When a temporary stream is over, stop the encoder and terminate the instance if you no longer need it. Check for storage volumes and other billable resources that may remain after termination. A stopped instance is not the same as removing every resource or charge.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| SSH connection times out | Inbound SSH is blocked, the source IP changed, the instance lacks a reachable network route, or the wrong address is used. | Check the instance state and address, route, security-group SSH rule and key. Permit only the current operator IP rather than opening SSH to everyone. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Wrong event URL or key, unsupported encoder configuration, or no outbound route. | Copy the RTMPS URL and key again from the actual Live Control Room event; check outbound connectivity and the encoder’s protocol and codec selection. |
| SSL or certificate error | The RTMPS address may be incorrect or the encoder may need the port specified. | Verify the exact URL in Live Control Room and try port 443 if needed, following YouTube’s RTMPS guidance. |
| Dropped frames or overloaded encoder | The instance may not sustain the selected codec, resolution, frame rate or bitrate, or network headroom may be inadequate. | Check encoder and YouTube health indicators; test representative content, reduce output demands or select capacity appropriate to the workload. Leave about 20% bandwidth headroom as YouTube recommends. |
| Unexpected AWS charges continue | The instance or related storage/network resources may still exist. | Terminate an unneeded instance and review remaining volumes, addresses and other resources in the AWS console. |
