How to Chat With Your Entire Obsidian Vault Using a Truly Local LLM

Yes—you can question an entire Obsidian vault without uploading its notes, but the practical method is retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), not teaching the model your vault permanently. An embedding model indexes passages from your Markdown files; when you ask a question, a local chat model receives the most relevant passages and drafts an answer with links or citations back to those notes.

Privacy depends on every endpoint you enable. A local chat model can still be paired with cloud embeddings or web search, so check those settings before indexing confidential research. The workflows below show how to build a cited, local-first setup and how to tell whether your notes are actually being used.

What does it mean for a local LLM to “understand” an Obsidian vault?

In a normal vault-chat setup, the model does not absorb every note into its permanent weights. A retrieval system creates an index, finds passages relevant to your question, and inserts those passages into the chat prompt at query time.

RAG in four stages

  1. Read: The plugin or companion reads selected Markdown files and splits them into chunks.
  2. Embed: An embedding model converts each chunk into numerical vectors. Similar ideas end up near one another in the index even when they use different words.
  3. Retrieve: Your question is embedded and matched against the index. The system selects the most relevant chunks, usually from several notes.
  4. Generate: The chat model receives your question plus the retrieved text and writes an answer. Good integrations expose the source notes or fragments so you can audit the synthesis.

This is why changing a note normally requires re-indexing or synchronization rather than retraining a model. Optional fine-tuning is a separate capability: QVAC documents it alongside, rather than as a replacement for, local semantic search (QVAC Local AI documentation).

What do I need before indexing a vault?

Plan for a desktop Obsidian installation, a running local model endpoint or companion process, and two model roles: chat generation and embeddings for semantic search. Most plugins also need permission to read the folders you select and enough disk space for downloaded models and the index.

  • Obsidian desktop: Several integrations are designed around desktop plugins; Lantern is explicitly desktop-only (Lantern documentation).
  • A chat endpoint: Ollama, LM Studio, vLLM, or another compatible local server can supply the generative model, depending on the plugin.
  • An embedding endpoint: Semantic RAG requires a separate embedding model unless your chosen tool provides one internally.
  • A scope decision: Index the whole vault or only research folders. Excluding private journals, credentials, client material, and drafts reduces accidental retrieval.
  • A citation habit: Choose a tool that shows the passages it used. A fluent answer without inspectable sources is difficult to verify.

There are no reliable, publisher-owned benchmarks establishing a universal best model, vault-size limit, latency, or accuracy advantage among these tools. Treat compatibility and privacy statements as product documentation, not controlled performance measurements.

Which local Obsidian workflow fits your privacy and setup goals?

The main differences are where embeddings run, which model servers are supported, and how much setup happens outside Obsidian.

Workflow Model and search options Evidence and distinctive features Operational trade-off
AI-Vault Local API support for Ollama or LM Studio; semantic search can be enabled separately Chat over vault content, RAG, and links to source fragments (AI-Vault documentation) With semantic search disabled, its documentation says chat, vault search, and history can remain on the machine and work offline. Enabling semantic search sends indexed note text to OpenAI embeddings, even when chat is local.
QVAC Local AI Local companion process on localhost Local semantic search, cited answers, OCR, missing-link suggestions, and optional fine-tuning (QVAC documentation) The disclosure says vault content, queries, and telemetry are not sent to a server; the initial model download is the principal network event. A companion must be available when you use the features.
Local LLM Helper Ollama chat plus a local embedding model such as nomic-embed-text Concrete Ollama setup, indexed-note RAG, and cited-note chat (Local LLM Helper documentation) Simple if you already use Ollama; you configure the endpoints and trigger indexing yourself.
Local LLM Hub Ollama, LM Studio, vLLM, or AnythingLLM, with separate chat and embedding settings Create a RAG setting, choose folders or the whole vault, sync the index, and combine multiple indexed-folder settings (Local LLM Hub documentation) Broad server support and flexible folder scope add configuration choices.
Lantern Locally installed qmd for semantic search plus a local LLM Desktop plugin with a grounded, cited chat agent and command-line-oriented search (Lantern documentation) Best suited to readers comfortable maintaining a separate local search tool.

How do I build a cited vault chat with Ollama?

Local LLM Helper documents a short Ollama path. The commands below install a chat model and an embedding model; the plugin then uses them for generation and retrieval.

  1. Install and start Ollama. Open a terminal and run ollama serve. Leave that process running while you use the plugin.
  2. Download a chat model. The documented example is ollama pull gemma3. Substitute a model your computer can run if needed.
  3. Download an embedding model. Run ollama pull nomic-embed-text. This model creates vectors for your notes; it is not the chat model.
  4. Configure the plugin. In Obsidian’s settings for Local LLM Helper, select the Ollama chat endpoint and the embedding model. Keep both endpoints pointed at your local Ollama instance.
  5. Choose the vault scope. Start with a research folder if you are testing privacy or relevance. Expand to the whole vault only after checking the retrieved passages.
  6. Index the notes. Start the plugin’s indexing or sync action and wait for completion. Large vaults can take time because every selected chunk must be embedded.
  7. Ask a cited question. Use a question that names a project, date, or concept, then open each returned note link. Confirm that the quoted fragments actually support the answer.

The plugin documentation states that data goes only to the endpoints and features you configure. That makes the endpoint check in the next section essential: a local chat URL does not prove that your embedding or search traffic is local.

How do I keep embeddings and search genuinely local?

Audit the complete data path before indexing. Chat generation, embeddings, web search, telemetry, and model downloads may have different destinations and different privacy terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. List every destination. Record the chat URL, embedding URL, optional web-search provider, model registry, and any companion daemon address shown in plugin settings.
  2. Disable cloud embeddings when required. AI-Vault explicitly documents that semantic search can send every indexed note to OpenAI embeddings. If the vault contains confidential research, use a local embedding model or leave semantic search off.
  3. Exclude sensitive folders. Do not index passwords, private health notes, legal material, client data, or unpublished work unless you have verified the complete pipeline.
  4. Review before sharing. Even with local inference, an answer may quote a sensitive note into a transcript, export, or synced Obsidian file. Inspect attached fragments and chat-history settings.
  5. Separate downloads from use. QVAC says its initial model download is the main network event, while vault content, queries, and telemetry stay off its server according to its disclosure. Download models on a trusted connection, then verify the companion’s runtime behavior.

A URL containing localhost only describes the address your plugin calls. If that process forwards requests to a cloud gateway, the data is not fully local; read the provider’s endpoint and telemetry settings.

How should I configure a broader multi-provider setup?

Local LLM Hub is useful when you want to mix server types or maintain several indexed scopes. Its documented RAG flow is deliberately explicit.

  1. Open the plugin’s settings and create a RAG configuration.
  2. Choose the embedding model and verify its endpoint separately from the chat model.
  3. Select either the whole vault or specific folders. Use separate settings for different projects when access boundaries matter.
  4. Run the sync operation to build or update each index.
  5. Combine multiple indexed-folder settings only when you want one chat session to search across those scopes.
  6. Test with a question whose answer is unambiguous in one note, then inspect the cited result before asking broad synthesis questions.

This arrangement gives you control over indexing scope, but it also creates more places for a cloud endpoint to be enabled accidentally. Document each setting in your own privacy checklist.

What can QVAC, AI-Vault, and Lantern add beyond basic chat?

QVAC for an all-local companion

QVAC runs as a localhost companion rather than relying only on an in-Obsidian model call. Its documented features include OCR, cited answers, and suggestions for missing links, which can help when useful information is in scanned material or when your notes have weak cross-links. Optional fine-tuning is available, but it should not be confused with the normal retrieval workflow.

AI-Vault for an integrated plugin path

AI-Vault combines vault chat, local API support, and source-fragment links. Its privacy behavior changes with the semantic-search switch: local chat and ordinary vault search can remain offline with that feature disabled, while semantic indexing can use OpenAI embeddings. Decide which behavior you want before the first index is created.

Lantern for qmd-based search

Lantern delegates semantic search to locally installed qmd and adds a grounded, cited chat agent that uses a local LLM. It is a reasonable choice if command-line tooling and a separate search engine are comfortable parts of your desktop workflow, but it is not a mobile solution.

How do I get answers that are accurate instead of merely fluent?

Retrieval quality often matters more than the model’s writing style. Use questions and notes that make the evidence boundary obvious.

  • Ask for sources: Request note names and quoted passages, not just a conclusion.
  • Start narrow: Ask “What did I decide about the 2025 field study?” before asking for a theory spanning your entire vault.
  • Use distinctive terms: Project names, dates, people, and exact labels improve retrieval when many notes share generic words.
  • Separate extraction from synthesis: First ask for the relevant passages; then ask the model to compare or summarize them.
  • Check omissions: A retrieved set can miss a note because of stale indexing, poor chunk boundaries, or a synonym the embedding model handles badly.
  • Keep notes structured: Clear headings, stable project names, and links give both retrieval and citation systems better anchors.

Do not treat a citation as proof by itself. Open the linked note, read the surrounding context, and check whether the answer distinguishes your documented fact from the model’s inference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What commonly goes wrong, and how can I fix it?

The answer ignores recent edits

Run the plugin’s sync or re-index action. Retrieval indexes are snapshots until the integration updates them; changing a Markdown file does not necessarily alter an existing vector immediately.

Results come from the wrong project

Reduce the indexed scope, create separate folder settings, or add project-specific terms to the question. Combining several indexes is convenient but increases the chance of similarly worded notes competing for retrieval.

The chat works but semantic search does not

Check that an embedding model is installed and that its endpoint is configured independently from the chat model. A generative model can answer general questions without having any searchable representation of your vault.

The system claims to be local but traffic appears online

Inspect embedding, web-search, telemetry, and download settings rather than checking only the chat URL. Disable cloud semantic search, remove sensitive folders from the index, and retest with network monitoring appropriate to your operating system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Citations are missing or unhelpful

Use a workflow that explicitly supports cited answers or source fragments, and ask for the note path in the prompt. If the retrieved chunk lacks enough context, open the source note and reformulate the question around its heading or project name.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Does the model permanently learn my vault?

Usually, no. Ordinary vault RAG stores an index and supplies selected text at question time; deleting or re-indexing notes changes what can be retrieved without changing the underlying model weights. Fine-tuning, where offered as an optional feature such as QVAC’s, is a separate process with different storage, privacy, and rollback implications.

That distinction also explains why a local model can appear to “understand” a vault one moment and miss it the next: the answer depends on index freshness, chunk selection, the embedding model, and the context window available to the chat model. Treat the vault as a searchable evidence base, not as a trained replacement for your notes.

What is the safest practical rollout?

  1. Create a test folder containing non-sensitive notes.
  2. Run a local chat model and a local embedding model, or choose a companion whose disclosure matches your privacy requirements.
  3. Index only that folder and ask questions with deliberately obvious answers.
  4. Open every citation and verify that the retrieved text supports the response.
  5. Check endpoint destinations and disable cloud embeddings or web search if they are not acceptable.
  6. Expand the scope gradually, re-sync after major edits, and keep sensitive folders excluded by default.

With that discipline, a local LLM can make a large Obsidian vault feel conversational while leaving the source material under your control. The model is useful because it retrieves the right evidence at the right time—not because it has secretly memorized every note.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a local vault-chat setup without an internet connection?

Yes, after model and software downloads, a fully local chat and embedding path can operate offline. AI-Vault documents offline use when semantic search is disabled, while QVAC identifies its initial model download as the main network event; verify the exact behavior of your selected endpoints.

Will indexing my whole vault duplicate or modify my Markdown files?

The documented workflows create a separate searchable index and retrieve passages from your notes; they do not describe rewriting the original Markdown files. Keep normal backups anyway, especially when a plugin offers editing or link-management features.

Can OCR make scanned PDFs searchable in every workflow?

No. OCR is specifically listed among QVAC’s features, while the other documented paths focus primarily on Markdown-note indexing. If scans are central to your research, confirm OCR support before choosing a tool.

Why does a local model still need an embedding model?

The chat model generates language, whereas the embedding model turns note chunks and questions into vectors for semantic matching. Some products bundle or hide this distinction, but semantic retrieval still requires that separate indexing function.
