For darker horror games on PS5, use the game’s own brightness or gamma test, calibrate HDR on the console, and avoid forcing HDR on titles that do not support it. For headphone audio, select the headset under Settings > Sound > Audio Output, create a personalized 3D-audio profile, then use Audio Focus sparingly for quiet or high-pitched cues. These changes improve visibility and make details such as footsteps easier to locate, but there is no universal brightness number or audio mode that suits every TV, game, and listener.
What should I change first for a dark horror game on PS5?
Start with the free console settings, then finish in the game itself. The most reliable order is: select the correct headphone output, build a 3D-audio profile, test Audio Focus, calibrate HDR, leave resolution on Automatic, and finally use the game’s brightness pattern. This separates problems caused by the PS5, the display, and the individual title.

- Create or select a 3D Audio for Headphones profile.
- Use Audio Focus only if faint ambience, footsteps, or metallic sounds are difficult to hear.
- Run the PS5 HDR calibration screens on the display you actually use for games.
- Keep resolution and refresh-related options at their display-appropriate defaults while you establish a baseline.
- Open the horror game’s own display and audio menu and follow its brightness or gamma image rather than copying a number from another game.
Write down your original settings before experimenting. That makes it easier to undo a change when a scene becomes washed out, clipped, or uncomfortably loud.
How do I select the correct headphone output on PS5?
Use the Audio Output page to route game sound to the headset and set a safe listening level.

- Set Output to Headphones as required by your connection and check the headphone volume.
- Play a scene with both quiet ambience and a loud effect. Lower the volume if the loud cue is uncomfortable before continuing with 3D audio or Audio Focus.
The same settings family includes Mono Audio for Headphones and Audio Format (Priority). Mono can be useful if you need identical left and right content, while Audio Format (Priority) is a format preference rather than a brightness or positional-audio control. Change either only when you have a specific compatibility or accessibility reason.
Should I use personalized 3D audio or stereo?
Try personalized 3D audio first, then compare it directly with stereo in a familiar game. Sony describes 3D audio as immersive surround sound intended to make you feel inside the game, but the result depends on your hearing, headset, and preference.

Create a personalized profile
- Open Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones).
- Choose Create Personalized 3D Audio Profile.
- Follow the listening prompts at a comfortable volume and complete the profile.
- Turn on Enable 3D Audio for Headphones.
The profile is based on how you hear the test sounds, so perform it while wearing the headset in its normal position. Do not move the earcups between prompts, and do not run the test with one side partially off your ear.
Use a preset when you need a quick comparison
If you do not want to complete the listening process, the PS5 provides five 3D-audio presets. Select a preset, play a scene containing movement around your character, and compare it with stereo at the same volume. Keep the mode that gives you the clearest front, side, and rear cues without making voices or ambience harsh.
| Mode | When to try it | What to listen for |
|---|---|---|
| Personalized 3D audio | You want the profile matched to your hearing | Stable direction and distance as sounds move |
| One of the five presets | You want a fast setup or a second reference | Which preset makes location cues easiest to follow |
| Stereo | 3D processing sounds unnatural or tiring | Whether left-right separation is clearer and more comfortable |
There is no official universal winner. A mode that gives excellent positional information in one headset can sound less natural in another, so judge it with the game and headset you actually use.
How can Audio Focus make quiet horror-game sounds easier to hear?
Audio Focus is a headphone feature designed to make quiet sounds clearer. It can help when low-level ambience disappears beneath louder effects, or when footsteps and metallic noises are difficult to distinguish.

- Multi-Device Connectivity
- Command and Control
- Always Be Ready for Great Play
- Connect the headphones, then open Settings > Sound > Volume > Audio Focus.
- Turn on Use Audio Focus.
- Choose the focus type that matches the problem: Boost Quiet Sounds for faint ambience, or Boost High Pitch for cues such as footsteps and metallic noises. The feature also offers voice and low-pitched emphasis for other listening needs.
- Start with Weak. If the cue is still masked, try Medium.
- Replay the same scene and lower the headphone volume if necessary.
Sony warns that Audio Focus can make headphone output loud. Treat the volume check as part of the setup, not as an optional final step. If Medium makes every sound aggressive or reduces your ability to judge distance, return to Weak or turn Audio Focus off.
| Audio Focus choice | Best starting use | Potential drawback |
|---|---|---|
| Off | You already hear the mix clearly | Very quiet cues may remain masked |
| Boost Quiet Sounds — Weak | Subtle ambience or low-level environmental detail | May be insufficient in a dense mix |
| Boost Quiet Sounds — Medium | Quiet sounds remain hard to hear after Weak | More noticeable loudness changes |
| Boost High Pitch — Weak | Footsteps, metallic noises, and other high-frequency cues | Can make sharp effects more prominent |
| Boost High Pitch — Medium | High-frequency cues are still being lost | May become fatiguing or overly bright |
How do I stop HDR from making dark scenes too dark?
Do not guess a numeric brightness value. Run the PS5’s HDR adjustment on the display used for gaming, then follow the game’s own pattern. HDR depends on the TV or monitor and the rest of the home-entertainment setup, so a value that works on one screen is not a reliable setting for another.
- Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Adjust HDR.
- Complete all three on-screen calibration screens. Use the display’s normal gaming picture mode while doing this.
- Return to the horror game and use its brightness or gamma pattern. Adjust until the game’s instructions are satisfied while shadow detail remains visible and black areas do not look gray.
- Check a dark interior, a night exterior, and a scene with a bright light. If one looks correct but another is badly clipped or crushed, revisit the game’s own control rather than changing several PS5 options at once.
Which HDR output option is better for a mixed library?
| HDR setting | What it does | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| On When Supported | Uses HDR for compatible games and leaves non-HDR games in SDR | You play both HDR and SDR titles and want SDR games to remain in their native range |
| Always On | Converts games and apps that are not HDR-compatible to HDR output | You have a specific reason to test converted output and accept that it is not native HDR |
On When Supported is the safer baseline for a mixed library because it avoids forcing conversion on SDR games. Always On does not guarantee brighter shadows or better contrast; it changes the output format, while the final appearance still depends on the display and the title.
Should PS5 resolution, VRR, and 120 Hz settings be changed for horror games?
Leave Resolution on Automatic initially. Sony says Automatic detects the TV’s capabilities and selects the highest supported resolution. This gives you a clean baseline before troubleshooting a particular display or game.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Keep VRR, 120 Hz Output, ALLM, RGB Range, and Video Transfer Rate at defaults appropriate for the connected display unless a specific combination causes a problem. These options can interact with the TV, cable, and game; changing all of them together makes it difficult to identify the cause of a dark or unstable image.
When should Performance Mode replace Resolution Mode?
Use the game’s own Performance Mode or Resolution Mode choice as a preference, not as a universal picture-quality rule. Performance Mode generally targets smoother play, while Resolution Mode targets the game’s higher-detail presentation, but the actual options differ by title. Test the same dark sequence in both modes and keep the one that preserves the motion and detail you value without introducing display problems.

How do I finish the setup inside each horror game?
Console settings cannot replace a game’s own calibration. Open the title’s display menu and use its brightness, gamma, or black-level image exactly as instructed.
Calibrate with the game’s pattern
Make small changes and check the result in ordinary gameplay. A menu logo or pause screen is not enough: dark hallways, outdoor night scenes, fog, and a bright flashlight reveal different problems. If the game offers separate brightness and HDR controls, change one at a time and return to the pattern after each adjustment.

Turn on subtitles when you need dialogue or environmental text that would otherwise be masked. If the game provides independent sliders, keep effects high enough for positional cues and reduce music before reducing effects. The exact labels and controls vary by game, so use the title’s menu rather than assuming every slider behaves the same way.
Use PS5 Game Presets carefully
PS5 Game Presets can preselect Performance Mode or Resolution Mode, camera view, subtitles and audio preferences, and language. Sony notes that some preset choices do not apply to every game. Verify the result in the title’s own menu the first time you launch it, especially after a game update.
What headset characteristics matter most for PS5 horror games?
Choose based on positional clarity, comfort, connection method, microphone requirements, and independent game/chat balance. A more expensive or louder headset is not automatically better for locating a sound; comfort and a consistent fit matter during long sessions and during the 3D-audio profile process.
| Decision point | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Positional clarity | Can you distinguish front, side, and rear sounds without raising volume? | Horror games often use subtle movement and environmental cues. |
| Comfort and fit | Does it stay sealed and stable without pressure or heat becoming distracting? | A changing fit can alter the sound and undermine a personalized profile. |
| Connection method | Is the wireless or wired connection compatible with your PS5 setup? | Connection reliability matters more than a specification that cannot be used in your room. |
| Microphone | Do you need clear party chat, or only game audio? | A microphone is useful for multiplayer sessions but unnecessary for a solo campaign. |
| Game/chat balance | Can you lower chat without losing the game’s quiet cues? | Independent balancing prevents conversation from masking ambience or footsteps. |
Is the PULSE 3D wireless headset a sensible PS5 option?
The PULSE 3D wireless headset is optional, not a requirement for these settings. Sony’s instruction manual documents simultaneous game and chat audio and dedicated CHAT/GAME balancing controls, which can be useful when party conversation competes with quiet horror-game sounds. If you already own a comfortable compatible headset, compare its positional clarity and controls before replacing it.

What should I do when the image or audio still seems wrong?
Change one layer at a time and use a repeatable test scene. The symptoms below point to the setting family most likely to help.
| Symptom | Check first | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| All headphones are silent | Output Device and Output to Headphones | Select the connected headset, verify its volume, and reconnect it before changing 3D audio. |
| Sound direction feels unnatural | 3D Audio profile and headset fit | Keep the headset in its normal position, compare the personalized profile with a preset and stereo, then retain the clearest mode. |
| Footsteps disappear under ambience | Audio Focus | Try Boost High Pitch at Weak, replay the scene, and recheck loudness before trying Medium. |
| Quiet rooms are still hard to hear | Audio Focus type | Try Boost Quiet Sounds at Weak; return to Off if the mix becomes tiring or unnatural. |
| HDR game looks crushed or washed out | Adjust HDR and the game’s pattern | Run all three PS5 HDR screens again, then use the title’s brightness or gamma control. |
| An SDR game looks oddly processed | HDR output mode | Use On When Supported instead of Always On so the SDR title is not automatically converted. |
| Resolution or refresh behavior is unexpected | Display compatibility | Return Resolution to Automatic and leave VRR, 120 Hz Output, ALLM, RGB Range, and Video Transfer Rate at display-appropriate defaults while testing. |
| A preset did not affect a game | Game support for presets | Set the option inside the game; not every title applies every PS5 Game Preset. |
What is the quickest repeatable setup before a horror session?
Use this short checklist after changing displays, headsets, or major game settings.
- Headset selected under Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Headphone volume comfortable with a loud effect.
- Personalized 3D Audio enabled, or a chosen preset/stereo mode tested against a familiar scene.
- Audio Focus off unless a specific quiet or high-pitched cue needs help; if enabled, start at Weak.
- HDR calibrated under Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Adjust HDR.
- On When Supported selected when your library includes SDR games you do not want converted.
- Resolution left on Automatic while you establish a baseline.
- VRR, 120 Hz Output, ALLM, RGB Range, and Video Transfer Rate left at display-appropriate defaults unless troubleshooting requires a deliberate change.
- The game’s own brightness or gamma pattern completed, with subtitles and audio sliders set for the way you play.
Once this baseline is stable, make only one change for a particular game. That preserves your ability to tell whether a visibility problem comes from HDR, the game’s gamma control, the headset mix, or a processing option.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use PS5 Audio Focus through TV speakers?
Sony describes Audio Focus as a feature for headphone output, and its setup path appears under the headphone volume controls. If you are playing through speakers, use the TV or receiver’s own audio controls instead of expecting Audio Focus to alter that output.
How often should I recreate my personalized 3D-audio profile?
Recreate it when you change headsets or the physical fit changes substantially. A different earcup position can change what you hear during the prompts, so keep the same headset position throughout a new profile.
Does HDR always make a horror game look brighter?
No. HDR changes the range and format of the signal; it does not guarantee lifted shadows. The display’s capabilities, the PS5 calibration screens, and the game’s own HDR implementation determine whether dark detail improves.
Can I hear party chat and game audio at the same time?
Yes, a compatible headset can mix both streams. The PULSE 3D wireless headset manual specifically documents simultaneous game and chat audio, with separate CHAT/GAME balancing controls.
Which setting should I change if only one game looks too dark?
Adjust that game’s brightness or gamma pattern first. A title-specific problem should not automatically lead you to change global HDR, RGB, or output settings that already look correct elsewhere.
