How to Change PS5 Light Color [Complete Guide by Expert]

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The PS5 has more than one “light color” you might be talking about: the console’s front light bar and the DualSense controller’s light bar. They’re controlled by different settings, and depending on your system software version, the available color choices can vary.

This guide walks you through both areas with the exact menu paths you can check on your console, plus troubleshooting steps when you don’t see the option you expected.

What “PS5 Light Color” Can Mean (Console vs. Controller)

On a standard PS5 setup, there are two main lighting sources you can try to change:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Console front light bar: The light strip at the front of the PS5 (often associated with status/ambient behavior).
  • DualSense controller light bar: The light on the front/top edge of the controller that can be used for player identification and effects.

The console light is often more constrained. The controller light bar typically offers more direct control (brightness and, in some firmware versions, color/pattern behavior).

Prerequisites: Check Your PS5 Firmware and Hardware

Before you chase settings, confirm your PS5 and controller firmware are up to date. Missing color options are commonly just older software.

Check PS5 system software version

  1. Go to Settings on the PS5 home screen.
  2. Select System.
  3. Choose System Software.
  4. Select System Software Update and Settings.
  5. Pick Update System Software (or verify you’re already current).

Confirm you’re using a DualSense (not a different controller)

If you’re using a DualSense controller, you should see controller-light settings. If you’re using a non-DualSense controller, you may only get limited (or no) lighting customization.

Also make sure the controller is connected (via USB or Bluetooth) and fully functional.

Change the PS5 Console Light Bar Color

The PS5 console front light bar is usually tied to system behavior and may not offer a full “pick any color” control like a PC RGB setup. Still, you should check whether your firmware provides a light bar color setting.

Look for Console Light Bar settings

  1. Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
  2. Select Accessibility.
  3. Look for an option related to Display, Light, or Indicator (names can differ slightly by firmware).
  4. If you see Console Light Bar or similar, open it and check for color or behavior controls.

If you don’t find any console light bar option under Accessibility, also scan these locations:

  • Settings > System (sometimes lighting/status behaviors live here)
  • Settings > Accessories (less common for the console itself, more common for controllers)

If your firmware doesn’t expose a color picker for the console light bar, the console light is effectively “not user-selectable” and will follow system behavior.

Change the DualSense Controller Light Bar Color

The DualSense controller’s light is the part most people can actually customize. Where the option lives depends on system software, but the menu paths are usually under Accessories and Controllers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the controller light bar setting

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Select Accessories.
  3. Choose Controllers.
  4. Open Controller Settings or a similarly named page.
  5. Look for Light Bar or Light settings.

If you see color controls

If your screen shows a Light Bar Color (or a similar dropdown), pick the color you want. Common firmware layouts support choosing an explicit color and/or turning the light Off.

If you see only brightness (and no color), that still changes the visual output—even if it doesn’t let you pick multiple colors.

If you see only “light off” or brightness

Some system versions don’t allow changing the controller light bar color. In that case, your best controls are usually:

Set Brightness, Effects, and Light Behavior

Even when color selection is limited, you can still tune how the light behaves so it matches your room setup.

Adjust controller light brightness

  1. Open Settings > Accessories > Controllers.
  2. Find Light Bar settings.
  3. Change Brightness to your preference (for example, lower brightness for a darker room).
  4. Test in-game or on the home screen to confirm the change applies.

Turn the light off (if offered)

If your menu includes an Off option for the controller light bar, selecting it will reduce distraction. Some games also override lighting during specific effects, so you may notice it changes temporarily.

Using Accessibility and Power Settings That Affect Lighting

PS5 lighting settings can sometimes appear under Accessibility rather than Controller settings. Also, power-saving behaviors can affect how lights behave when the system idles.

Check Accessibility lighting-related options

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility.
  2. Look for options mentioning visual indicators, light, display, or notification.
  3. Disable any setting that forces an always-on indicator if you want a calmer appearance.

Review power settings that might change light behavior

  1. Open Settings > System.
  2. Go to Power Saving or similarly named power options.
  3. Check for settings that control indicators during standby or when the controller is idle.

Power behavior can make it look like your color “didn’t apply,” when it actually only changes at certain system states (active vs. standby).

Methods That Do Not Work (and Why)

Some approaches people try don’t exist on PS5, or they won’t change the light at all.

  • No RGB software: PS5 doesn’t support installing controller RGB apps like you’d see on some PC setups.
  • No web-based “light color changer”: There’s no official website or browser tool that can set PS5 light colors.
  • No third-party “hack” recommendation: Using unofficial tools or exploits can lead to system instability or account/security risks.

If you see instructions telling you to run an untrusted program to change PS5 lighting, treat it as unsafe.

Troubleshooting: Color Options Missing or Not Changing

If you can’t find the setting, or it doesn’t change anything, follow this order. It fixes most “why isn’t my light changing?” problems.

1) Verify system software is up to date

  1. Go to Settings > System > System Software.
  2. Choose Update System Software.
  3. After the update, fully restart the PS5.
  4. Re-check Accessories > Controllers for Light Bar.

2) Reset the controller connection and settings scope

  1. Disconnect the DualSense (unpair/re-pair if you need to).
  2. Connect it again via USB, then test whether the controller light menu responds.
  3. Go back to the controller light settings and confirm your selection.

Some settings won’t apply until the controller fully reconnects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3) Confirm you changed the right device’s light

People often change controller brightness/color but expect the console’s front light to follow. Console and controller are managed separately.

  • Console light: may only follow system status, and may not expose a full color picker

4) Look for “light override” by games or apps

Some games use the DualSense light bar for player indicators, damage states, or effects. When that happens, your global setting might be temporarily overridden.

To test the base behavior, check the home screen (no specific gameplay) after changing the option.

5) Try a full restart (not just rest mode)

  1. Hold the PS button.
  2. Select Power.
  3. Choose Restart PS5.
  4. Re-test the light color setting.

6) Check if the option is simply unavailable on your firmware

If your menu only shows brightness or light off, or the controller light menu doesn’t appear at all, it may be a firmware feature difference. Updating usually helps, but there’s also a chance your specific software branch doesn’t expose color selection.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Confusing console lighting with controller lighting (two different settings areas).
  • Expecting full RGB style controls (PS5 lighting customization is generally limited to what Sony exposes in Settings).
  • Changing settings and not testing after reconnect (controller reconnect can be required).
  • Testing only in a game (use the home screen to verify baseline lighting behavior).

Quick Reference Table: Where the Setting Lives

Target light Most likely Settings path What you can usually control
DualSense light bar Settings > Accessories > Controllers Brightness, and sometimes color (depends on firmware)
PS5 console front light bar May appear under Settings > Accessibility or Settings > System Often limited to behavior/status; may not offer full color picker
Light behavior in standby/idle Settings > System > Power Saving How indicators behave during power states

FAQs

Can I set the PS5 console front light to any color?

Most PS5 consoles don’t provide a full “choose any color” control for the front light bar. If you don’t see a color selection option in Settings, the light is likely status-driven on your firmware version.

Why can I change the DualSense brightness but not the color?

Your system software version may only expose brightness and on/off controls for the DualSense light bar. Updating System Software is the first thing to try, then verify the menu labels under Accessories > Controllers.

Does changing the light color affect battery life?

Brighter controller light can use more power, so turning brightness down (or turning the light off, if available) can help battery life slightly. The effect is usually small compared to trigger/rumble usage, but it’s real.

Why does my light color change back while playing a game?

Games can override DualSense lighting for player identification and effects. Your global setting may still be there, but the game temporarily controls the light bar.

What if I don’t see a Light Bar option anywhere?

Update system software, reconnect the DualSense, and confirm you’re in the correct menu area (Settings > Accessories > Controllers). If the option still doesn’t appear, your firmware may not support color controls.

Bottom Line

To change PS5 light color, start by identifying which light you mean: the console front bar or the DualSense controller light bar. Then check Settings > Accessories > Controllers for controller lighting options and verify your System Software is up to date.

If you don’t see color options, that usually means your firmware limits lighting customization—brightness and on/off may still be available, and game lighting effects can override what you set.
