Most PS5 headset changes are in Settings > Sound. Use Audio Output to choose the headset and decide what reaches it, Microphone (or the Control Center’s Mic panel) to select and level the microphone, and 3D Audio (Headphones) to create a personalized spatial-audio profile. You can also balance game and chat audio from the Control Center, and some compatible headsets add hardware controls for mute, mic monitoring, EQ, or chat/game balance.
The menu names below are for the current PS5 system software layout. Options can differ with the connected headset, USB adapter, controller, or microphone.

How do I route PS5 game and chat sound to my headset?
Choose the connected headset as the output device, set what is sent to headphones, and verify the selection in the Control Center. These settings affect where both game audio and voice-chat playback go.
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Open Output Device and select the connected headset. Depending on your setup, it may appear as a wireless headset, USB audio device, controller headset, or another available device.
- Set Output to Headphones to the audio you want in the headset. This is the control to check when game sound or chat is missing from the earcups.
- Turn on Switch Output Device Automatically if you want the PS5 to move audio to a device as soon as it is connected. Leave it off if you routinely switch between a headset, TV, and another audio device manually.
- For level changes, go to Settings > Sound > Volume and adjust Headphones or Controller Speakers. You can reach the same live controls by pressing the PS button, opening the Control Center, and choosing Sound.
- If the headset supports it, adjust Sidetone Volume. Sidetone feeds your own voice back into the headset so you do not have to speak too loudly; Sony notes that this control is not available on every headset.
If a headset is connected but you still hear the TV, open the Control Center, choose Sound, and confirm that the headset is the active output. Then return to Audio Output and check both Output Device and Output to Headphones.

How do I make my PS5 use my headset microphone?
Select the microphone explicitly, set its input level to Sony’s Good range, and check the mute state. The PS5 can use a headset microphone, the DualSense controller microphone, or a separate USB microphone, depending on what is connected.
- Press the PS button and select Mic in the Control Center.
- Open Input Device and choose the microphone you intend to use. If both a headset and the controller are available, do not assume the headset was selected automatically.
- Choose Adjust Microphone Level and speak normally. Move the level until the meter reaches Sony’s Good range rather than the low or excessive portions of the meter.
- In the same microphone settings, set Microphone Status When Logged In to On if you want voice input immediately after signing in, or Mute if you prefer to enable it manually.
- Set Microphone Status When Starting Voice Chat or Broadcast to Switch to Mute to avoid joining with a hot microphone. Choose Don’t Change when the PS5 should preserve the state you already set.
The controller’s physical MUTE button can mute the microphone and the controller speakers together. Press it again to restore the previous state. If other players cannot hear you, check that button, the headset’s own mute switch, and the Control Center mute icon before changing advanced settings.

Use the Control Center’s Sound panel for software volume controls. A headset with a dedicated chat/game mixer can provide a quicker relative balance while you play.
- Press the PS button, choose Sound, and adjust the available headset volume controls.
- On the PULSE 3D headset, press CHAT to make voice chat relatively louder or GAME to make game audio relatively louder.
- Press CHAT and GAME together on PULSE 3D to reset the balance to its default center position.
- If you hear your own voice, use the headset’s monitoring control or the PS5’s sidetone setting where supported. Monitoring is separate from the volume heard by other players.
A mixer changes the relationship between two sources; it does not repair an incorrectly selected output device. If one source is completely absent, return to Settings > Sound > Audio Output and verify the routing first.

How do I turn on or personalize 3D audio for PS5 headphones?
Open the dedicated 3D-audio menu, complete the listening test, and enable the resulting profile. You can instead use one of Sony’s five presets, or switch the feature off to return to stereo.
- Go to Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (Headphones).
- Select Create Personalized 3D Audio Profile.
- Listen to each test sound and answer where it appears to come from. The PS5 uses those responses to build a profile for your hearing and the selected headphones.
- After the test, turn on Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile.
- If you do not want to run the test, choose one of Sony’s five preset profiles instead.
- Keep Enable 3D Audio for Headphones on for spatial playback. Turn it off when you want a stereo comparison or prefer conventional two-channel sound.
Re-run the personalized test when the result sounds unnaturally distant, hollow, or poorly positioned. You can also turn off Apply Personalized 3D Audio Profile and compare a preset; that separates a profile problem from a general preference for stereo or another tuning.

Use Settings > Sound > 3D Audio (TV). The PS5 can measure room acoustics through the DualSense controller microphone and use that measurement for TV-speaker 3D audio. Re-measure after moving the television, changing your seating position, or substantially rearranging the room, because those changes alter the acoustic path the console measured.
How do I change PS5 headset EQ presets?
For supported Sony headsets, press PS, select Sound, and choose EQ Presets. The documented choices are Standard, Bass Boost, and Shooter, plus three custom modes.

Sony names PULSE Explore, PULSE 3D, and PULSE Elite among the products for which PS5 EQ and 3D-audio controls can be adjusted. The controls shown on your console depend on the connected device and its configuration, so a missing EQ menu does not indicate a PS5 fault by itself.
What do the headset’s own mute and monitoring controls do?
Hardware buttons work alongside the PS5 menus and can be useful when you need to react without opening the Control Center. The documented PULSE 3D controls behave as follows:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Control | Action | Indicator or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Mute button | Mutes or unmutes the headset microphones. | The indicator is orange while muted. |
| MONITOR switch | Turns mic monitoring on so you hear your own voice. | A high beep means on; a low beep means off. Monitoring is disabled while mute is active. |
| CHAT button | Makes chat relatively louder than game audio. | Works as a balance control, not as a replacement for output routing. |
| GAME button | Makes game audio relatively louder than chat. | Press CHAT and GAME together to reset the balance. |
These behaviors are documented for PULSE 3D. Other headsets can place the controls elsewhere, omit them, or provide a different mixer, so follow the labels on the device you are wearing.
Why can’t my friends hear me on PS5?
Most voice problems come from a muted microphone, the wrong input device, or an input level outside the useful range. Check the signal path in this order:

- Review Microphone Status When Starting Voice Chat or Broadcast. Switch to Mute deliberately starts sessions muted; change it to Don’t Change if that behavior is unwanted.
- Ask a party member to check whether the problem is only in one game or party. If the PS5 input meter responds but a particular game does not transmit your voice, the game’s own voice-chat setting may be controlling participation.
How do I stop friends from hearing an echo?
Go to Settings > Sound > Microphone > Adjust Microphone Level and move the microphone fader two to four notches to the left, following Sony’s troubleshooting guidance. Test again after each small change so you do not reduce your voice below an intelligible level.
Why is there no sound in my PS5 headset?
Start with routing rather than EQ or 3D audio. A headset can be powered on yet receive no signal if the console is still outputting to the TV or another device.

| Comparison point | What to verify | Why it matters on PS5 |
|---|---|---|
| Output compatibility | Whether the headset works through USB, a controller cable, or another PS5-supported connection. | Determines whether it appears as a selectable output device. |
| Wireless or wired connection | Connection method and whether an adapter is required. | Affects setup, possible USB interference, and how automatically the PS5 can switch output. |
| Microphone controls | Physical mute, input selection, and mic-monitoring or sidetone support. | Makes it easier to prevent a hot mic and hear your own speaking level. |
| Chat/game balance | Dedicated mixer buttons or only software controls. | Determines how quickly you can favor a teammate’s voice or game audio. |
| EQ support | Whether PS5 exposes presets and custom frequency sliders. | Lets you change tonal balance without relying on a separate device. |
| 3D-audio support | Personalized profile, presets, or stereo-only operation. | Shows which spatial-audio choices will appear in the PS5 menu. |
| Setting retention | Whether changes are retained on the headset itself. | Useful when moving the headset between compatible systems; Sony documents stored EQ and sidetone settings for PULSE Elite. |
How do Sony’s documented compatible devices differ?
| Device | Documented PS5-related features | Evidence limitation |
|---|---|---|
| PULSE 3D | Headset mute, mic monitoring, chat/game balance, PS5 audio routing, and use with PS5 3D-audio settings. | No numeric sound or microphone performance score is established. |
| PULSE Elite | EQ and 3D-audio customization, plus sidetone; Sony says EQ and sidetone settings are stored on the headset after configuration. | Available controls still depend on the connected configuration. |
| PULSE Explore | Named by Sony as a compatible device for PS5 EQ and 3D-audio adjustment. | The documentation does not provide a comparative ranking against other headsets. |
What is a reliable setup sequence before joining a party?
A short check prevents most embarrassing microphone and routing mistakes:
- Connect or power on the headset and wait for it to appear as an available device.
- Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and select it as Output Device.
- Set Output to Headphones and confirm a game or system sound is audible.
- Open the Control Center’s Mic panel, select the intended Input Device, and set its level to Good.
- Check the mute button and decide whether sign-in and voice-chat sessions should begin muted.
- Use the Control Center’s Sound panel to set a comfortable volume or chat/game balance.
- Enable your personalized 3D profile only after ordinary stereo output is working. This makes it easier to identify whether a later problem is routing or spatial-audio tuning.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the PS5 controller microphone while my headset handles sound?
Yes, when the controller microphone appears as an available option. Open the Control Center, choose Mic, and select the controller under Input Device while leaving the headset selected under Audio Output. The two choices are independent, so verify both before starting a party.
Why are EQ presets missing from my PS5 Sound menu?
EQ controls are device-dependent. Sony documents Standard, Bass Boost, Shooter, and custom slider modes for supported headsets; a headset or connection that does not expose those controls will not show the same menu, and changing 3D-audio settings cannot add EQ controls that the device does not support.
When should I repeat the PS5 TV 3D-audio measurement?
Repeat it after moving the television, changing your normal seat, or rearranging the room. The measurement uses the controller microphone to account for room acoustics, so the previous result may no longer represent the new speaker-to-listener path.
Does turning off headphone 3D audio disable the headset microphone?
No. The 3D-audio switch changes playback processing only; microphone selection, mute state, and input level remain in the Mic controls. You can therefore compare stereo and 3D playback without changing the device used for voice chat.
