There is no single switch for AI-search privacy. Google Search, Microsoft Copilot and ChatGPT Search each keep their own controls, and each separates saved activity, personalization, web access, advertising and model-improvement choices. To reduce personalization, open the provider’s settings while signed in, disable the relevant data-use switch, and then use the separate deletion control for existing history or memories. The guide below gives the exact paths for Google AI Mode, Copilot and ChatGPT Search, explains what each switch changes, and shows how to check whether a setting is actually taking effect.
What do AI-search privacy settings actually control?
AI search is a collection of data practices rather than one feature. A provider may save your searches, remember facts you shared, use activity from other products, retrieve live web pages, tailor recommendations or use conversations to improve models. Disabling one category does not automatically disable the others.

Settings also vary by signed-in status, age, country, subscription, app version and whether an employer or school manages the account. A control can therefore be absent, renamed or unavailable even when another user sees it.
How do I turn off personalization in Google Search and AI Mode?
Google now separates Search Services History from Personalized Recommendations. Turn off both if you want to prevent new Search-service activity from being saved and stop tailored results or personalized AI responses.

Stop Google from saving Search-service interactions
- Open your Google Account and select Data & privacy.
- Open Personalization settings.
- Select Search Services History and switch it off.
- When prompted, choose whether to turn off saving only or to turn it off and delete the activity already associated with the setting.
- If your account shows Save Media, review that subsetting separately; it can be available only for some accounts.
Turning the history switch off is a prevention choice. It does not, by itself, remove every item that was previously saved unless you select the deletion option or use Google’s separate activity-management controls.
Stop tailored results and personalized AI responses
- Return to Data & privacy > Personalization settings.
- Turn off Personalized Recommendations in Search services.
Google also provides the direct settings page at google.com/search-personalization. This switch covers tailored Search results, feeds and personalized responses generated in Search services. It is independent of whether Search Services History is storing interactions.
What changes in Google AI Mode?
Google says AI Mode can reference previous searches and activity saved in Search Services History. Personalization is available for eligible users only when Search Services History and Personalized Recommendations are enabled. Turning either control off removes the conditions required for that personalized experience; AI Mode itself can still be available as a general search feature.
Google is rolling the newer controls out gradually. If you do not see Search Services History or Personalized Recommendations, your account may still show Web & App Activity or an older Search Personalization control. Do not assume that a missing new label means history is disabled: use the controls currently displayed in your account and check whether an explicit deletion option is offered.
How do I change privacy and personalization settings in Microsoft Copilot?
Copilot divides personalization and memory, Microsoft-product activity, live web search and advertising into separate settings. Work through each category you want to change.

Disable Copilot memory and personalization
- On copilot.com, Windows or macOS, select the profile icon, then select your profile name.
- Open Memory > Personalization and memory.
- Turn off the personalization and memory control.
In the mobile app, open the menu, select the profile icon and follow the same Memory > Personalization and memory path. In the Edge Sidebar, select the sidebar menu (…), then Settings > Memory > Personalization and memory.

- Open the profile menu and go to Memory.
- Select Microsoft usage data.
- Disable the control for using activity from products such as Bing, MSN, Edge and other Microsoft services to personalize Copilot.
This setting is separate from Copilot’s own memory. Disabling memory does not automatically prevent cross-product activity from being used, and disabling cross-product activity does not erase memories already saved.
Turn off live web grounding
- Open Settings > Personalization.
- If the page includes an Advanced section, expand it.
- Turn off Web search.
Microsoft says this toggle controls real-time web content and persists across supported Copilot clients and devices. With it off, Copilot is not instructed to retrieve live web pages for grounding. The assistant may still produce an answer from its existing model knowledge, so this is not the same as disabling Copilot.
Turn off personalized advertising
In Copilot’s Personalization settings, turn off Allow ads personalization. You can also change the corresponding advertising choice in the Microsoft privacy dashboard. Advertising personalization is independent of memory, usage-data sharing and web search.
Delete memories that already exist
- Open Memory and select Manage beside Saved memories.
- Delete individual entries, or choose Delete all memories.
Disabling memory prevents or limits future use according to the setting, while the Manage screen handles the records that are already listed.

Where are the privacy controls for ChatGPT Search?
ChatGPT’s Privacy Center explains the available choices, but opening it does not change anything. The actionable switches remain in Settings, and the exact options depend on your plan, region, account and workspace.
Open the Privacy Center
- On the web, open the account menu and select Help, then Privacy center.
- On iOS or Android, open Settings > Privacy Center.
Use the center as a map of the controls and their implications, then follow its links or close it and change the setting in the relevant Settings section. OpenAI states that your privacy controls remain in Settings.
Control use of chats for model improvement
- Open Settings > Data controls.
- Review the control governing whether your conversations can be used to improve OpenAI models.
- Switch it off if you do not want eligible conversations used for that purpose.
This choice concerns model improvement, not whether a conversation appears in your history or whether the assistant remembers a detail.
Disable saved memories and personalization
- Open Settings > Personalization.
- Review the memory and personalization controls.
- Disable memory if you do not want ChatGPT to retain details for use in later conversations, and use the available management option to remove stored memories.
Use Temporary Chat for a non-memory conversation
Temporary Chat stays out of history, does not create or update memories, and is not used to improve OpenAI models while it remains temporary. It is a session mode rather than a replacement for reviewing your permanent Data controls and Personalization settings.

Why ChatGPT options may not appear
Feature availability can differ by plan, region, account and workspace. The rollout described by OpenAI excludes Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare workspaces, so a managed account may not expose the same controls as a personal account.

What happens after I turn a setting off?
The result depends on the specific switch. Use the following as a decision guide rather than treating “privacy off” as one universal state.

Because deletion and prevention are different operations, check both the toggle state and the provider’s activity or memory-management page when your goal is to remove existing records.

- Confirm the account. Check the profile icon, email address and workspace before changing anything. A browser can be signed in to a different account than the mobile app.
- Check every relevant category. For example, disabling Copilot memory does not disable Microsoft usage data, and disabling Google recommendations does not disable Search Services History.
- Delete existing records when required. Look for “delete,” “manage” or “remove all” controls after switching prevention off.
- Test in a new session. Ask a neutral question that would normally depend on a saved preference. Do not use private information as a test prompt.
- Check across clients. Copilot’s web-search choice is designed to persist across supported clients and devices, but an app may need to refresh or be updated before its display catches up.
- Recheck after a rollout change. Google’s newer labels are being introduced gradually, so an account may move from an older Web & App Activity control to the newer Search Services History and Personalized Recommendations controls.

Choose the narrowest set of switches that matches your objective. Turning off every personalization feature can reduce continuity and tailored recommendations, while turning off web grounding can make answers less current.
Why is an AI-search privacy setting missing or ineffective?
The label is different
Providers change names during rollouts. Google accounts may still show Web & App Activity or older Search Personalization controls instead of the newer labels. Follow the function described by the account page rather than looking only for an exact phrase from another device.
The account is managed
School, employer and healthcare workspaces can restrict or omit controls. ChatGPT’s current rollout specifically excludes Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare workspaces, and other providers can apply their own administrator policies.
The switch changed but old data remains
A prevention switch does not necessarily erase history or memories. Use the provider’s explicit activity or memory-management feature and allow the page to finish processing the deletion.
The assistant still answers questions
Privacy settings generally change storage, personalization or retrieval behavior; they do not make the assistant stop generating responses. An answer that is not tailored to you can still be produced from the model, and turning off live web search can reduce freshness without disabling the assistant.

The setting differs between devices
Make sure each client uses the same signed-in account. Some controls are account-level, while a client can also hide a feature because of app version, region, eligibility or a managed-device policy.
Do I need special hardware to change AI-search privacy?
No. These controls are software settings in the provider’s account dashboard or app. A privacy screen, security key, VPN device or other physical accessory does not switch off search history, assistant memory, model-improvement eligibility or personalized advertising.

Can I turn off AI-search personalization everywhere at once?
No. Google, Copilot and ChatGPT keep separate accounts and policies, so a change in one service does not carry over to another. Review each provider’s history, personalization, memory, web-search and model-improvement controls individually.
Does deleting a search or memory also stop future collection?
Not necessarily. Deletion removes an existing record when the provider offers that operation, while a separate toggle controls what happens to future activity. Use both when you want prevention and removal.

Will turning off web search make an AI assistant more private?
It stops the assistant from retrieving live web content through that control, but it does not by itself disable memory, history, advertising or model-improvement settings. Those categories require their own choices.
Why do personalized answers continue after I disable a setting?
The answer may be based on general model knowledge rather than a saved profile, or another personalization source may still be enabled. Check related controls such as Google Search Services History, Copilot Microsoft usage data and ChatGPT memory, then test in a fresh session.
