To change difficulty during a playthrough of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, find a Spirit Mirror and choose its difficulty-change option. You can switch between Story and Action in either direction without restarting. Carnage works differently: it unlocks after you complete the game, is chosen when you start a new game, and cannot be changed once that run begins.
The short version: use Story if you want a lower-pressure way to learn the combat or focus on the narrative, and Action if you want more challenging battles. If you want help interpreting enemy attacks, Action Prompts are a separate Gameplay setting and do not require switching to Story. Treat Carnage as a deliberate replay challenge, not a setting to test and then undo.

Capcom’s June 3, 2026 release material lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC among the game’s platforms. The mode descriptions and switching rules below apply to the game as described; exact menu wording may vary by platform or update.
There are two different decisions here. One is your current combat difficulty, which you can adjust between Story and Action at a Spirit Mirror. The other is whether to enable Action Prompts, which show icons for responses to enemy attacks in Gameplay settings. Prompts are an aid, not a difficulty setting. Carnage is the exception to the flexible Story/Action approach: it is available only after completing the game and is locked after you select it for a new run.

How do I change difficulty in Onimusha: Way of the Sword?
Use a Spirit Mirror in the game, not the general Settings menu. The Spirit Mirror is the main documented route for changing between Story and Action during an active run. If you are looking through ordinary settings menus for a difficulty slider, you are looking in the wrong place for this change.
- Return to gameplay. If a system or pause menu is open, close it so you can interact with the current game.
- Find a Spirit Mirror. Go to one you can access in the area you are playing.
- Interact with the mirror. Look for the option to change difficulty in its menu.
- Choose Story or Action. These are the two modes that can be switched during a run.
- Confirm and resume. Follow the on-screen confirmation, then continue playing.
You can switch from Action to Story or from Story to Action. If a difficult encounter is becoming a wall, changing to Story is an available alternative to abandoning that playthrough. You can return to Action later through the same Spirit Mirror route. That makes Story and Action practical options to adjust as your confidence with the combat changes, rather than permanent choices made only at the start.
The route is intentionally straightforward: reach a mirror, choose the difficulty-change option, select one of the two switchable modes, and confirm. The key restriction is that the mid-run change applies to Story and Action. Do not treat the same route as a way to undo Carnage after selecting it for a new game.
What if I cannot find the option?
Check that you are interacting with a Spirit Mirror rather than looking only in the general Settings menu. Guidance also describes a death-screen route that may offer Story after several consecutive failures, but it is a fallback, not the clearest or primary way to change difficulty. The Spirit Mirror remains the dependable instruction to look for.
If you are deciding whether to wait for that fallback, there is little reason to make it your plan: the mirror is the main route, and a death-screen offer is described only as something that may appear after several consecutive failures. Use the mirror when you want to make a deliberate switch instead of relying on a conditional option appearing after repeated defeats.
What is the difference between Story, Action and Carnage?
Story is the lower-pressure choice, Action is aimed at players who want challenging battles, and Carnage is a high-stakes mode for a replay. The important practical distinction is availability: Story and Action are available from the beginning and can be swapped mid-run, while Carnage is a post-completion choice that stays locked for that run.

| Mode | Availability and switching | Combat pressure | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Story | Available from the beginning; can be changed to or from Action at a Spirit Mirror | Lower pressure | Players learning the combat or prioritizing the narrative |
| Action | Available from the beginning; can be changed to or from Story at a Spirit Mirror | Challenging battles | Players who already understand the combat loop and want encounters to demand more attention |
| Carnage | Unlocks after completing the game; select it when starting a new game; cannot be changed once chosen | High stakes: a single hit can mean death | Players looking for a demanding replay challenge |
In practice, the modes differ not just in how much pressure you want but in how much flexibility you retain. Story and Action are both available from the beginning, and you can move between them at a Spirit Mirror. Carnage requires a completed game first; you select it when starting a new game, then cannot change that setting during the run. If you are unsure, the reversible options are the sensible place to experiment.
Capcom producer Akihito Kadowaki described the team’s aim as “trying to find that balance between satisfying gameplay and difficulty, rather than making a very difficult game,” and said it wanted to make an action game “that a wide range of people can enjoy.” In an Xbox Wire interview on June 12, 2026, he also said the team had worked on “a lot of different difficulty options rather than just a binary choice” to make the experience accessible and adjustable. That context is useful when choosing a mode: moving between Story and Action is part of the available flexibility, not a reason to restart.
Kadowaki’s comments also help explain why it is reasonable to choose by preference rather than by a supposed “correct” route. The modes are described for different kinds of play: lower-pressure narrative focus, challenging battles, and a high-stakes replay. The available descriptions do not establish that one mode is required for a particular story chapter, boss, or collectible, so difficulty is best approached as a choice about the pressure you want from combat.

Which difficulty should I choose for a first playthrough?
Choose based on how much pressure you want while learning the combat. Story is a sensible starting point if you are new to demanding action games or want more room to learn defensive timing; Action is a reasonable start if you already know the combat patterns you enjoy and want battles to stay tense.
There is no need to frame this as a one-time test of your skill. Since Story and Action can be changed in either direction at a Spirit Mirror, you can start with the experience you want now and reassess later. If ordinary fights begin to feel manageable and you want more challenge, move from Story to Action. If a boss or run of encounters is taking more attempts than you want to spend, moving from Action to Story is also an option.
Choose Story to learn at a gentler pace
Story is described as the mode for focusing on the narrative and is recommended for action-game beginners. It can be a useful place to learn how guarding, deflecting and parrying work, and to practice recognizing the timing for Issen attacks, without making repeated boss attempts the price of every lesson.
Starting on Story does not commit you to staying there. Once ordinary fights feel manageable and you want more pressure, use a Spirit Mirror to move to Action. Equally, switching back to Story is an option if a boss is stopping your progress. For a first-time player, that flexibility can make it easier to experiment: learn what an enemy attack looks like, try a defensive response, and decide whether you want to keep the current pressure or adjust it.
Story may also suit someone who is more interested in following the narrative than in making every encounter a test. It is not necessary to justify that choice as a temporary concession or to wait until you have failed a certain number of times. The mode is described as the lower-pressure, story-focused option. Use it because it matches the experience you want, and change later if your preference changes.
Choose Action if you already want a challenge
Action is described as the choice for players who want challenging battles. Consider it if you already understand the defensive tools and want to pay closer attention to enemy encounters, while retaining the ability to move to Story if you hit a wall.
Action is a useful middle ground for someone who wants the fights to demand attention without choosing Carnage’s locked replay rules. It is available from the beginning and remains reversible with Story at a Spirit Mirror. If the mode feels right, stay with it; if the pressure becomes frustrating rather than enjoyable, you can change to Story and later return to Action.
Experienced action-game players may prefer to begin on Action so that ordinary encounters feel more demanding from the outset. That recommendation is about preference, not a promise that a particular skill level maps to a particular mode. The relevant distinction is simply that Action is for challenging battles, while Carnage is a separate, much higher-stakes option intended for a replay.
Save Carnage for a replay
Carnage is not a first-run difficulty to sample and then undo: it unlocks after completing the game and cannot be changed after you select it for a new game. Because a single hit can mean death, it is best treated as a deliberate replay challenge rather than the default next step for someone simply looking for a little more difficulty. Completing Carnage is associated with special rewards and the True Onimusha achievement in the game database.

Before selecting Carnage, make sure you are choosing a challenge whose restriction suits you: once chosen, it cannot be switched to Story or Action during that run. If what you want is simply a more demanding version of a current playthrough, Action is the flexible option. Carnage is for a player who has finished the game and wants to take on a high-stakes replay knowing that the setting will remain in place.
Its completion is associated with special rewards and the True Onimusha achievement, which may make it appealing to completionists. That association is a reason to consider Carnage after finishing the game, not a reason to assume it is required for every player or that its rewards justify entering a run before you are ready for the restriction.
Can I use Action Prompts without switching to Story?
Yes. Action Prompts are a separate Gameplay setting, not another difficulty mode, so they can be used as an aid while you play on Story or Action.
The menu path is System Menu > Settings > Gameplay. Action Prompts display icons indicating how to respond to enemy attacks. They are described as enabled by default; leaving them on while learning enemy tells can help you connect what an attack looks like with the response it calls for. When those reminders are no longer useful, you can turn them off in Gameplay without changing difficulty.

This distinction matters if your concern is reading attacks rather than reducing combat pressure. You do not have to leave Action or restart on Story to get the prompts, and you do not have to turn the prompts off to make a mode more challenging. You can, for example, remain on Action while using the icons as a learning aid, or play Story with the prompts turned off if that is the combination you prefer.
A practical approach is to keep the prompts enabled while you are learning to recognize attack cues and decide how to respond. Once the icons feel unnecessary, turn them off through Gameplay settings. Treat that as a separate adjustment from difficulty: changing prompts does not change Story into Action or Action into Story, and choosing Story is not required to access the prompt help.
Use the exact name Action Prompts when looking for this option. They are not a fourth difficulty tier and should not be confused with the Action mode. The similar names refer to different things: Action is a difficulty setting; Action Prompts are response icons that can support learning enemy attacks.
Are there official health or damage numbers for each difficulty?
Capcom’s official material does not establish exact health or damage multipliers for Story, Action and Carnage. Treat precise figures circulating elsewhere as estimates unless they are attributed to an official Capcom source.

- Transfer Files in Seconds: Transfer files and from your laptop at speeds up to 10 Gbps with USB A 3.2 port. Extra 2 USB A 2.0 ports are perfectly for your keyboards and mouse.
The useful decision does not depend on a multiplier: Story is the lower-pressure mode, Action is for challenging battles, and Carnage is the locked, high-stakes replay option. Choose by the experience you want rather than treating an unofficial number as a guarantee of how every encounter will behave.
In particular, do not read the reported 1.7x health and 1.9x damage comparison as a game-wide formula. It refers to an enemy comparison at the final mission and comes from a community-maintained database. The figures can help illustrate why Carnage is treated as a substantial challenge, but Capcom has not published exact multipliers in the official material cited here. There is no verified basis for assigning a precise Story-to-Action multiplier or extending this reported comparison to every enemy.
If you are choosing a mode, descriptive labels are more useful than trying to calculate the experience from those figures. Story is lower pressure; Action offers challenging battles; Carnage is a one-hit-can-mean-death replay. The mode restrictions and your own tolerance for repeated attempts are the reliable practical points to weigh.
What is the safest way to decide?
For a first run, make the choice reversible where possible: start with the mode that suits your current comfort, then adjust at a Spirit Mirror if the experience is too demanding or not demanding enough.
- New to this style of combat: Start on Story and use the breathing room to learn defensive timing.
- Experienced with action combat: Start on Action if you want challenging encounters, knowing you can move to Story if you need to.
- Want visual help reading attacks: Keep Action Prompts enabled independently of your difficulty choice.
- Want the hardest replay challenge: Finish the game first, then select Carnage only when you are ready to keep that setting for the run.
The recommendations are practical guidance based on how the modes are described and which ones can be changed; they are not a prescribed order from Capcom. Most importantly, do not choose Carnage expecting the Spirit Mirror to let you switch back later.
A simple decision sequence can keep the options clear. First ask whether you want a lower-pressure experience or challenging battles. If you want lower pressure or are learning the defensive timing, choose Story. If you want a challenge and already feel comfortable with the combat, choose Action. Then decide separately whether Action Prompts would help you read attacks. Finally, consider Carnage only after finishing the game and only if you want a replay setting that cannot be changed once chosen.
This sequence avoids two common mix-ups: looking for the difficulty change in the general Settings menu, and assuming the Action Prompts toggle is another name for difficulty. The Spirit Mirror is the route for switching between Story and Action; System Menu > Settings > Gameplay is the route for Action Prompts. Carnage is selected when starting a new game after unlocking it, not switched into mid-run.

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if I die several times on Action?
A death-screen route may offer Story after several consecutive failures. Because it is described as a fallback, use a Spirit Mirror as the main way to change modes when you can reach one.
Can I switch from Action to Story without restarting?
Yes. Interact with a Spirit Mirror and choose the difficulty-change option. Story and Action can be switched in either direction during the same run.
Where is the difficulty setting in Onimusha?
The documented route is a Spirit Mirror in the game, not the general Settings menu. Interact with the mirror and choose the option to change difficulty.
How do I unlock Carnage?
Complete the game, then select Carnage when starting a new game. It is not available from the beginning and cannot be changed after you choose it for that run.
What is the best difficulty for a first playthrough?
Story is a sensible choice if you are new to demanding action combat or want a lower-pressure, narrative-focused run. Choose Action if you already understand the combat and want challenging battles. You can switch between them at a Spirit Mirror.
Can I turn on button prompts without lowering the difficulty?
Yes. Action Prompts are a separate Gameplay option, accessed through System Menu > Settings > Gameplay. They can be used on Story or Action.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Does changing difficulty affect story chapters, bosses or collectibles?
The mode descriptions do not establish that difficulty changes chapters, boss availability or collectibles. Do not assume those parts of the game change when you switch modes.
Are Carnage’s health and damage multipliers official?
No exact Capcom multiplier is established in the official material cited here. Onimusha.tools reports a community comparison of 1.7 times the health and 1.9 times the damage for an enemy on Carnage versus Action by the final mission; do not treat it as an official or universal figure.
Is Onimusha: Way of the Sword available on Nintendo Switch?
Capcom’s June 3, 2026 release material lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC among the platforms. That list does not establish availability on Nintendo Switch.
The Bottom Line
For an adjustable first run, choose Story or Action according to the pressure you want, then change between them at a Spirit Mirror if needed. Action Prompts are a separate Gameplay aid. Carnage unlocks only after completing the game and cannot be changed once selected for a new run, so save it for a replay you deliberately want to make high-stakes.
