To change ChatGPT’s privacy, training, search, location, cookie, or export settings, open your account menu, choose Settings, then Data controls. On iPhone and Android, open the sidebar, tap your profile icon, and select Data controls. Turn off Improve the model for everyone to stop new personal-workspace conversations from being used to improve OpenAI models; this does not delete existing chats. Search is under View all tools → Search, while location sharing, exports, and other controls are managed separately. Labels and availability vary by plan, region, app version, sign-in state, and workspace policy.
Where are ChatGPT’s data controls?
On the web, open the account or profile menu, select Settings, and open Data controls. In the iOS and Android apps, open the sidebar, tap your profile icon, and choose Data controls. The page you see can differ if you are signed out, using a managed Business, Enterprise, Edu, or Healthcare workspace, or running an app version with different labels.

- Sign in to ChatGPT at chatgpt.com, if you use a signed-in account.
- Open your account menu.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Data controls.
iPhone and Android path
- Open the ChatGPT app and expand the sidebar.
- Tap the profile icon.
- Open Data controls.
Signed-out web users can still have some choices saved in that browser. Those settings do not automatically follow you to another browser, device, or account.
How do I turn off ChatGPT training?
In Settings → Data controls, switch off Improve the model for everyone. OpenAI states: “When Improve the model for everyone is off, your new conversations won’t be used to train OpenAI models.” The setting applies to new conversations in a personal workspace; it does not erase chats already in your history or make them disappear from the sidebar.

What the switch changes
- New personal-workspace chats: excluded from model-improvement use while the setting is off.
- Existing chats: remain in your history unless you delete them separately.
- Workspace accounts: Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare defaults and administrator controls can differ from personal accounts.
- Feedback: a thumbs-up or thumbs-down submission after opting out can make the associated conversation eligible for training under OpenAI’s policy.
If you cannot see the switch, check whether you are in a managed workspace or signed out. An administrator may control the organization’s policy, and the consumer control may not be shown.
How do I use Temporary Chat?
Start a new conversation, select Temporary, and choose Personalized or Unpersonalized before sending your first message. OpenAI says: “A temporary chat stays out of your chat history and is not used to improve OpenAI models while it remains temporary.”

- Select Temporary near the chat controls.
- Choose Personalized or Unpersonalized.
- Send your message only after confirming the temporary mode is active.
Personalized versus unpersonalized temporary chats
Temporary chats do not create or update memories. A personalized temporary chat may nevertheless use memories that already exist, along with custom instructions and plugins. Choose the unpersonalized option when you do not want those existing personalization sources used for that conversation.
Temporary Chat limits
- It stays out of your normal chat history only while it remains temporary.
- OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes, according to its 2026 Help Center guidance.
- Saving a temporary chat converts it to a regular chat; normal history, personalization, and model-improvement settings then apply.
What is the difference between a regular chat and Temporary Chat?
The mode affects where the conversation appears, whether it can use personalization, and how model-improvement treatment works. Use the table to choose the boundary that matches your situation.

How do I search the web in ChatGPT?
Open a conversation, select View all tools, and choose Search. A slash shortcut can also open Search where that shortcut is supported. Search availability and the exact tool label can vary by account and app version.
Does Search require precise location?
No. ChatGPT may use an approximate location inferred from your IP address to improve local results, but precise device location is optional and off by default. Web search does not require precise location sharing.

How do I change ChatGPT location settings?
Go to Settings → Data controls → Location. There you can manage optional device-location sharing. If location access was previously denied, also review the permission for ChatGPT in your browser or in your phone’s operating-system settings.
Why location results may still look local
Turning off precise device location does not necessarily remove all geographic signals. ChatGPT can still use approximate IP-based location for local results, depending on your connection and the feature being used.

How do I change browsing permissions in ChatGPT Work’s cloud browser?
If your account includes ChatGPT Work’s cloud browser, open Settings → Cloud browser. Set website access to Always ask, Auto approve, or Always allow. A per-site choice overrides the default, so a website can have a different rule from the global setting.
What happens to cloud-browser cookies and sessions?
Cloud-browser cookies, sign-ins, sessions, and history are separate from those in your personal browser on the device. Clearing cookies in the cloud browser signs you out of that website there; it does not clear the cookies in Chrome, Safari, Edge, or another local browser.

How do I change ChatGPT cookies?
On chatgpt.com, scroll to the page footer and select Cookie Preferences when that option is offered in your region. Cookie controls for help.openai.com and openai.com are separate footer links, so changing one site’s choices does not automatically change the others. On platform.openai.com, signed-in users can open the profile menu and select Manage cookies.
If you do not see a cookie link, it may not be offered in your region or may be hidden until the page is fully loaded. Browser-level cookie blocking or clearing is a separate control from the site’s preference center.

How do I export my ChatGPT data?
For a web export, open your profile menu and go to Settings → Data controls. Under Export data, select Export and confirm the request.
- Open the account or profile menu.
- Select Settings.
- Open Data controls.
- Find Export data and choose Export.
- Confirm the request and follow the delivery instructions shown by ChatGPT.
Exporting from iOS or Android
Open the app’s sidebar, tap the profile icon, choose Data controls, and select Export data. Some app versions hand the request off to a web page for completion.

Consumer users can also request a download through the Privacy Portal. Managed Business, Enterprise, and Healthcare workspaces may not provide self-service export; in that case, ask the workspace owner or administrator for the organization’s process.
Why can’t I find a data-control setting?
Missing controls usually reflect account context rather than a broken installation. Check these cases before changing anything else.
- Wrong account or workspace: switch from a managed workspace to your personal workspace, if appropriate.
- Signed-out use: some settings are saved only in the current browser and are not attached to an account.
- App version: update the mobile app and reopen the sidebar; labels can move between releases.
- Region: cookie, location, advertising, cloud-browser, or export options may not be offered everywhere.
- Administrator policy: organization owners can set defaults or restrict controls for managed accounts.
What should I check after changing a setting?
Verify the result in the same account, workspace, and device where you made the change. Start a new conversation to test model-improvement or Temporary Chat behavior, because changing a setting does not retroactively alter an existing thread.
- After disabling Improve the model for everyone, confirm the switch remains off after reopening Data controls.
- For Temporary Chat, check the Temporary indicator before sending the first message.
- For location, check both ChatGPT’s Location setting and the browser or device permission.
- For cloud browsing, test the site-specific permission; it may override the global default.
- For exports, check the confirmation screen and the account email or portal instructions used for delivery.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change these settings without signing in?
Some choices can be made while signed out, but they are saved only in that browser. They will not automatically carry over to another browser, device, or account, and managed-workspace policies do not apply in the same way.
Does disabling precise location stop all local search results?
No. Precise device location is optional, but ChatGPT may still estimate a broad area from your IP address. Results can therefore remain region-aware without access to your phone’s exact coordinates.
Will clearing cloud-browser cookies log me out of my normal browser?
No. The cloud browser has an isolated cookie jar and session store. Clearing it signs you out of the affected website in the cloud environment while leaving local-browser cookies untouched.
Who can request an export for a managed workspace?
Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare accounts may have no self-service export button. Contact the workspace owner or administrator, who can explain the organization’s approved data-access process.
